Monthly Recaps: December 08
Part Five: Race to the MVP
Image

1. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat

Stats: PPG -- 32.9; RPG -- 6.5; APG -- 6.5; SPG -- 2.1; BPG -- 1.8; FG% -- .511; 3P% -- .350; FT% -- .751
Comment: Ready or not, the Flash is now back in full force in the NBA. D-Wade has been leading the Miami Heat to a surprising 18-10 record going into 2009, with the help of...no one, Which of course is the most impressive part, and due to that and the fact that he dominates the league with his scoring and also all-dimensional play in his 6'4" frame, Wade proudly sits at number one in the first R2MVP Rankings of the 08/09 Season.

2. Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets

Stats: PPG -- 23.6; RPG -- 6.5; APG -- 8.8; SPG -- 2.4; BPG -- 0.0; FG% -- .493; 3P% -- .337; FT% -- .897
Comment: After a breakout season, Paul picked up where he left off last season and is leading the Hornets, with the help of fellow All-Star teammate David West, to a respectable 19-9 record. Paul's averages of 23.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 8.8 apg, and the league leading 2.4 spg is enough to land him back up here at one of the top spots in the R2MVP Rankings.

3. Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs

Stats: PPG -- 20.0; RPG -- 10.0; APG -- 3.5; SPG -- 0.6; BPG -- 2.9; FG% -- .510; 3P% -- DNQ; FT% -- .640
Comment: Surprised? You shouldn't be, after all, fundamentals never get too old to be used effectively. Duncan has been using his basketball fundamentals to post up these numbers, and more importantly, helped his team reach a 21-9 record going into 2009; His 2.9 blocks per game is tied with Yao and Dwight for second place in the league leaders category in block shots per game.

4. Lamar Odom, Chicago Bulls

Stats: PPG -- 24.7; RPG -- 7.2; APG -- 9.1; SPG -- 1.3; BPG -- 1.2; FG% -- .633; 3P% -- DNQ; FT% -- .672
Comment: The man who has had a break out season so far, Lamar Odom of the Chicago Bulls. Odom has flourished once he arrived in the Windy City, doing everything on the court (yes i mean literally everything), getting triple doubles or near triple doubles every game as a result, playing terrific defense, and he has led the Bulls to a very, very respectable and unbelievable 22-8 record thus far. Leading the league in Assists per game as well as having the best Efficiency Rating AND Pure point rating, i am sure Phil Jackson is missing Odom right now.

5. Lebron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

Stats: PPG -- 28.7; RPG -- 7.7; APG -- 5.2; SPG -- 1.7; BPG -- 1.4; FG% -- .486; 3P% -- .387; FT% -- .763
Comment: How could you have a R2MVP Rankings without King James? here he is, just a bit further back then he usually is, due to his team's not-so-impressive record of 15-14, the fact that they are ranked 23 in offense right now, and the fact that Lebron isn't at the pinnacle of all major statistical categories like he used to be has sunk him to number 5 in this month's R2MVP Rankings; for now, Lebron should focus on teaching his teammates how to score, because he is doing twice what the second scoring leader on the team is doing right now.

6. Zack Randolph, Los Angeles Clippers

Stats: PPG -- 22.9; RPG -- 10.2; APG -- 1.4; SPG -- 1.2; BPG -- 0.0; FG% -- .501; 3P% -- .371; FT% -- .755
Comment: Randolph is leading the Clippers to a fairytale season so far, mind you, ZACK RANDOLPH, not the guy whom they had paid top dollar to steal from the Warriors only to lose Elton Brand to the Sixers as a result, but anyhow, Randolph has been great and truly deserves his place here at 6th.

7. Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic

Stats: PPG -- 21.3; RPG -- 9.2; APG -- 1.9; SPG -- 1.0; BPG -- 2.9; FG% -- .540; 3P% -- DNQ; FT% -- .525
Comment: Too Bad Dwight ended the month on a slump, however, he is still the premier big man in the NBA as of now, the Magic are now 17-13 under Superman's reins, but can he regain his usual form?

8. Dirk Nowiziki, Dallas Mavericks

Stats: PPG -- 27.3; RPG -- 8.6; APG -- 3.9; SPG -- 0.8; BPG -- 1.2; FG% -- .510; 3P% -- .377; FT% -- .841
Comment: Dirk has been shooting and scoring even more then usual, averaging 27 ppg and 8.6 rpg with a 51% field goal percentage, if his team could step it up he could make a pretty convincing MVP argument for sure, but can they? the Mavs are currently 17-2 but looks to be in deep trouble with their defense, which has sunk back to the Don Nelson-era level, totally unacceptable.

9. Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix Suns

Stats: PPG -- 23.8; RPG -- 7.9; APG -- 2.7; SPG -- 1.5; BPG -- 1.7; FG% -- .510; 3P% -- DNQ; FT% -- .820
Comment: Amare has finally found out he can play some D too, and his 1.7 BPG, 1.5 SPG prooved that much, but the Suns need much mroe then just Amare with defense, they need to be HEALTHY.

10. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers

Stats: PPG -- 24.4; RPG -- 5.8; APG -- 4.9; SPG -- 1.7; BPG -- 0.3; FG% -- .462; 3P% -- .275; FT% -- ..852
Comment: His numbers have really gone down in comparison to other years, but since everyone else on the Lakers are struggling he stands as the only reason why the Lake-show are 18-11 right now.

OLI (Outside Looking In, hurt because of reasons such as team record): Al Jefferson, Chris Bosh, Brandon Roy, Carmelo Anthony, Joe Johnson, Vince Carter, Andre Iguoldala, Allen Iverson

Thanks guys, this one took me about the same amount of time as last month's recap despite the added rookie rankings and R2MVP rankings due to the template already set for the Power Rankings (that one takes the longest 0.0) so it's all good :) i have a lot of free time right now cause i am in the holidays still (Chinese New Year XD)

all votes valid, Cleveland seems to be a lock atm, one more day until voting finishes

Bryant, Lakers agree on contract extension
December 31st 2008
Image
The Los Angeles Lakers have just announced that they have successfully signed the reigning MVP Kobe Bryant to a 1+1 year contract extension.Per Team Policy, terms of the deal was not revealed,
Sources close to the Lakers have reported that the contract is a 1 year contract with the 2nd year being a player option, and the total worth of the contract extension is around about 48 million dollars (including the player option), that makes his current contract with the Lakers total worth to be around about 69 million dollars for 3 years.

This move quickly dampened other team's hopes of signing this 3 time NBA Champion at the end of the season.

Chicago Shakes Roster with two 3 team deals involving 19 players
January 1st 2009

The Chicago Bulls has had a surprising but terrific season thus far, but Owner/GM Dennis Rodman has decided to enter 2009 with a major shake up, he has recently announced that the team has completed TWO 3 team trades that involves a total of 19 players in the 5 teams involved.

First Trade: Bulls, Lakers, Cavaliers
Bulls send: Joe Alexander (Lakers), Kirk Hinrich (Lakers), Lindsey Hunter (Cavaliers)
Lakers send: Steve Francis (Bulls), Andris Nocioni (Cavaliers), Larry Hughes (Cavaliers), Chris Mihm (Bulls)
Cavaliers send: Eric Snow (Bulls), Wally Szczerbiak (Lakers), Tarence Kinsey (Bulls), David Jackson (Bulls)

Second Trade: Bulls, Nuggets, Grizzlies
Bulls send: Joakim Noah (Grizzlies), Aaron Gray (Nuggets)
Nuggets send: Anthony Carter (Bulls), Johan Petro (Grizzlies), Renaldo Balkman (Grizzlies)
Grizzlies send: Quinton Ross (Nuggets), Darius Miles (Nuggets)

Image
Image

There is one thing in common for all the players going to the Chicago Bulls - they all have expiring contracts; Most likely, Dennis Rodman is going all out for the FA class of '09 or '10 in order to build that championship Bulls team that he wants.

For the Lakers: they gain a prospect in Joe Alexander and gain an upgrade over Derek Fisher at the PG spot, gets rid of Larry Hughes and gains a 13 million expiring in Szczerbiak.
For the Cavaliers: they get Larry Hughes back, but then they get an excellent player in Andres Nocioni who can play the 4 for the Cavs, he can stretch the defense and make way for Lebron down low.
For the Nuggets: Darius Miles would be the best guy they got in the deal, they traded away a bunch of role players and got this guy, who, if fully recovered from his near-career ending injury, would become a good player for the Nuggets, who are struggling right now due to Billups' Season Ending Injury (i feel sorry for the Nuggets trainer, first he needs to work with Billups then now there is Miles...), they also get a decent backup center in Aaron Gray who has not been getting minutes with the Bulls.
For the Grizzlies: Joakim Noah could perhaps save this team from being at the bottom of the league while they wait for Marc Gasol to develop, they could also play them together, with Noah at the 4 and Gasol at the 5, but really, they got a nice player in Joakim, however it's not going to change their fate of being terrible...

Cheers Sit

Yes i did :)
was looking to deal Noah and Kirk for obvious reasons (former is lack of size and lack of moves...latter is cause of his 4 year contract..) i cant wait for Joe Alexander to develop, and Lindsey Hunter/Aaron Gray has just been struggling and complaining so much it's pissed me off lol

I am getting Stevie Franchise, who wont be half as good as he was, but you know, he might be able to pull a couple of highlight dunks once in a while still...Chris Mihm for the lack of size in my backups (i know Ha is 7'3" but he's got no game), i've always liked Eric Snow (Real Life Snow, when he played with Allen Iverson in the Sixers) he can be a mentor to my guys :) , Kinsey is just there to fill the team up, as for Carter, i expect him to back up Derrick Rose mostly, with a pg rotation of Rose/Carter/Francis.

Now that i have nearly 30 mill to work with next season...i can either sign a couple of max contracts (damn Lakers extended Kobe...) or sign some 1 year contracts to fill out the team while i wait for the holy '10 FA class

Wow, huge trades. Nice monthly recap by the way. I love it.

Although I dont think the Lakers would shake up their team as much as they did now these trades are still all fair. So you dont get anything really, but some nice cap space. Looking forward to your offseason man ;) Very good dynasty :)

Ah and btw: Cavs and Suns ;)

The Reigning Western Conference Champions are struggling like the Mavs of real life...if they didnt do anything i bet Kobe wouldn't have agreed to that 1+1 extension
my offseason would be much nicer if the Lakers didn't sign Kobe to that damn extension....still got the likes of sheed, AI, Kidd, Artest...etc etc to look forward to though, so i'm ok

Bulls show interest in UCLA Center Prospect
January 3rd, 2009

The Chicago Bulls, who has had a great season thus far at 22-10, looked like they are operating in a rebuilding mode despite being one of the best teams in the NBA, they have recently cleared cap space for next year, and the year after's free agent class via trades, and now sources show that the Bulls have been heavily scouting UCLA's 7'3" center prospect Andrew Gilmore.

Andrew Gilmore, son of former NBA great, and former Chicago Bull Artis Gilmore, is a 7'3", 294 lbs Center with an outstanding inside game and a decent rebounding ability, he has declared for the draft earlier this season and is having a great season starting for the UCLA Bruins, averaging over a double double and leading the league in field goal percentage.

However, the setback with the Bulls looking to draft Gilmore is that he is projected by various mock drafts and scouts to be a lock for the lottery, while the Bulls pick is likely to be in the late 20s with their current record, this could mean a possible move for the Bulls to deal away one of their starters or a package of players, picks, etc to a lottery bound team that is willing to be parted with their pick. The most likely team in this situation would be the Memphis Grizzlies, who has both the cap space to take on someone big, and also the crappiest record in the NBA, however, the Grizzlies would either have to release someone or trade a player to the Bulls to make any trade possible due to their roster being at 15, and the Bulls, who are clearing cap space, most likely would not accept a long term, bad player in return.

The next few weeks could prove to be interesting for the Bulls

Give Memphis some good players if you're going to do a deal with them. :)

Williams gets first 20/20, sets new career highs in Bulls win over Thunder
January 10th 2009

Image
In a blow out victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder at home in Chicago today, the Bulls' 2nd year forward/center Sean Williams broke several of his own career highs and came away with his first career 20/20 game.

Williams had already gotten a double double (12 pts 10 reb) by half time, and he grabbed rebounds and had put-backs on various possessions, he dominated the Thunder's small lineup inside, and came away in the end with a career high 28 points, career high 20 rebounds, and had 4 assists and a block to go along with his 20/20 performance.

In the same game, Williams' teammate Lamar Odom also had a big game, and was 3 rebounds shy of a triple double (he has 5 this season) with 30 points, 12 assists, and 7 rebounds, as well as 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Memphis fires Marc Iavaroni, Hires Cliff Norris
January 10th 2009

Image
After a dreadful start to the season, the Memphis Grizzlies have finally fired Marc Iavaroni, replacing him was the relatively unknown Cliff Norris.

The Grizzlies are currently 8-29 and it does not look like that this coaching change would do this team any good, the team management might need to revamp the roster to make winning a viable option for this young team.

Nice game for Williams. :) Good work!

And is Cliff Norris related to Chuck by any chance?

Nice work on this dynasty mate, the player movement is very interesting. Im looking forward to see what happens regarding trading for a higher pick.
