Supersonic Soul :: Season Preview

Postby kibaxx7 on Sat Dec 26, 2009 11:53 am

Season Preview: Young and talented, Supersonics could surprise

He's seen it all. At least it feels that way. He's got the weight of the franchise on his shoulders, yet he's willing to share the load with his teammates. There appears to be little ego and tons of confidence. He's the unquestioned leader and he knows it. And he just turned 21... “My teammates always give me confidence and lean on me in tough times,” Kevin Durant says, “so I've got to be strong.” Durant surveys the level landscape of prairie around Seattle with matching perspective. He's The Man and still acts like a kid. After a recent workout, he spent the rest of the day playing X-Box 360 with two equally young-at-heart teammates, Russell Westbrook and James Harden. Still, he's feeling like the Sonics' grizzled vet after just two years. “A little bit. I actually do,” said Durant, the league's sixth-leading scorer last season. “I've been through a lot, as far as being in every type of situation as a player in these first two years. I feel like I've learned a lot, but I still have a long ways to go.” The organization does, too. Just not as far as a year ago. Sonics players and coaches are ahead of the game this time around. Instead of relocating halfway across the country, like a huge rumor that was all over the news said, it's not about moving into a new arena and new homes, changing the team name and colors: it's just basketball.

Head coach Thierry Tirieux, from France, former coach of 3 Euroleague semi-finalists, is in charge from this day: day one. The challenge of developing a better basketball team, with Durant as the hub, is the single most important mission for him, general manager Sam Presti and the front office. “I'm looking forward to our team taking another step,” said Tirieux. “We feel that we've had a great summer, guys are getting better and guys will continue to get better. Our focus will be continue to improve every day. Every day in practice, every shootaround, every game, every film session is to get better. That's been my mentality since I've taken over and that will always be our mentality as a team. I believe in this guys.” As much publicity as Durant gets on the team that gets very little, he's hardly the only piece to build around. Jeff Green and Westbrook came into their own last season, joining forces with Durant as Seattle's three-headed (and juvenile) monster. “We still have a young team,” Green said. “We're still trying to get better. Last year wasn't too good, but we have a lot of room to improve. This is just the start of things.”

Nick Collison, going into his sixth year with the franchise, is the team's most-tenured performer. Thabo Sefolosha, Nenad Krstic and Shaun Livingston, each acquired during last season, and D.J White are going through preseason together for the first time. Joining the fold are rookie Harden (fourth overall pick), Byron Mullens and Serge Ibaka, and veterans Kevin Ollie and Etan Thomas. “We really are going to focus on getting team chemistry. We have a lot of competitive players on our team and a lot of opportunities where you can mix guys up,” Tirieux added. “There's no question we have to improve defensively; we will have a system in place and we will work on it. We will continue to challenge our guys to work on the good habits that it takes to be a great defensive team. It's not going to be overnight. We're not going to be the best defensive team in basketball, but we're going to strive to become better everyday.”

As offensively gifted as Durant is, plus the strides made at that end by Green and Westbrook, the Sonics' improvement has to come at stopping some people. Seattle finished 23rd in points allowed (103.1) and 20th in defensive efficiency last season. GM Presti has added a pair of assistants -- Ron Adams and Maurice Cheeks -- with a defensive disposition to his staff. “Offensively, we just have to continue to use our talents. We have a group of high-character guys who like playing alongside each other. Unselfish basketball is the only way to play on the offensive end.” Tirieux and Presti know the team, having won just 23 games last season, is still in the early stages of building a contender in the stacked Western Conference, but they have not steered clear of playoff conversation. And the players throwed it out there as a goal. A goal for this season. “That's every team's goal,” Westbrook said. “That's one goal we have in mind, but we've got to tell each other to take it a day at a time and get better. That's what we're looking forward to. That's what Thierry's been preaching to us these last couple of months is to always take it a day at a time, each practice and never take steps back.”

Image

:: Three Keys To Playoffs ::
1 :: TROOPS MAKE JUMP
Durant-Westbrook-Green trio is on the rise. Need more consistency and production from the supporting cast.
2 :: ADD ANOTHER PIECE
GM Presti isn't afraid to pull the trigger on the right move. Landing another big-time talent would help.
3 :: GET LUCKY
Probably a year or more from the postseason, but a few career years and a few teams faltering could make things interesting.

I just sim Nellieball, because its established, and I don't have a long-standing record of quitting dynasties in the first month of the season. Don't mean to be harsh, I just don't see the point of this.

That's what I want to do with this one... simulation. :) Boredom's killing me and I still have two months left of not doing anything.

Btw, I actually think a legit Sonics' dynasty where team never left for Oklahoma where you're using Sonics' courts, jerseys etc (2k9 PC patches) is a very strong idea. Sit's dynasty is all about the Stealth, not the Sonics. Completely different thing.

Btw, I'm a fan. I actually think Sonics are a better dynasty choice than the always popular Blazers. Can't recall a legit Seattle Supersonics dynasty, well ever :P

Before Sit cries, his is a OKC/Stealth dynasty, not a Supersonics' one. Completely different.

Because Durant's still there? :lol: I already made some trade scenarios but his $4M salary is giving me headaches.

[0-0] Preview vs. MIL

Postby kibaxx7 on Sun Dec 27, 2009 4:42 am

Image

Image Milwaukee (0-1) to visit Image Seattle (0-0)

SEATTLE (Ticker) Oct. 29 -- The Seattle Supersonics and Milwaukee Bucks combined for 57 wins last season, but there's reason for optimism for both teams as they continue their rebuilding projects. Milwaukee finished 34-48 after failing to win 30 games in each of the previous two seasons. Injuries to stars Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut played a big part in the Milwaukee Bucks missing the playoffs for a third straight season in 2008-09. They certainly can't afford the same setbacks again this season. Redd averaged 21.2 points in 33 games before tearing two ligaments in his left knee on Jan. 24. Milwaukee went 17-16 with their leading scorer in the lineup, but never found a consistent scorer to replace him. Making makers worse, was Bogut (11.7 ppg, 10.3 rpg) playing just 36 games and none after Jan. 31 due to a back injury. Even without them and the club allowing 100.4 points per game, Milwaukee managed to stay in the Eastern Conference playoff mix thanks to Richard Jefferson, Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions, who helped the Bucks average 99.3 points per contest.

Those three are gone, however, leaving the Bucks lacking some true offensive depth. They added Carlos Delfino, who averaged 9.0 points a game for Toronto in 2007-08 and played in Russia last season, Hakim Warrick (11.6 ppg with Memphis last season) and drafted raw point guard Brandon Jennings 10th overall. The good news for Milwaukee is that Redd and Bogut looked healthy while logging solid minutes during the preseason. “Those are good signs, both of those guys being healthy, for sure,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. The key, however, could be Jennings, a highly acclaimed prep star at Virginia's Oak Hill Academy who opted to pass on college and play professionally in Europe last season. After a disappointing effort for Lottomatica Roma of the Italian Lega A, he declared for the NBA Draft. A good start would certainly help Milwaukee's confidence, as the Bucks have lost their last three season openers (counting yesterday's loss against the Bulls; results below), but, on the other hand, the Bucks have won three straight over the Sonics franchise, holding Durant to 15.5 points in a pair of victories last season.

Behind emerging star Kevin Durant, the Sonics especially have high hopes for the season that will begin with the Bucks' visit to Seattle on Wednesday night. The Sonics got off to a horrific 3-29 start in 2008-09, but the team won 20 of its final 50 games and saw progress from a young core that includes Durant, forward Jeff Green and guard Russell Westbrook. That trio combined to average 57.1 points, 18.1 rebounds and 10.1 assists, and Durant's 25.3 points-per-game average ranked sixth in the league. The former Texas star and 2007-08 rookie of the year could shoulder an even bigger load this season. “You're going to have highs and lows, especially with us growing as a team, us being young. But we've got to make up for that with working hard and playing hard in games,” Durant said. “I think that'll limit that. It starts with me being a leader.”

The Sonics, who finished 23-59 last season, will also hope for contributions from guards Shaun Livingston, who joined the team late last season after recovering from a major knee injury, and James Harden, the third overall draft pick in June out of Arizona State. “The talent is there. There's no question about it,” Livingston said. “These guys are young, they know how to play, the guys have got a big heart on this team. It's just we have to pull it together. This team isn't about one player. It's about guys coming together and forming chemistry.” The team will also likely have to improve its defense under French coach Thierry Tirieux, who will begin his NBA coaching career here. Sonics opponents shot 47.5 percent from the field last season, the 27th-worst mark in the league. Among Western Conference teams, only Sacramento was worse, ranking last overall at 48.3 percent.
