Jazz match Portland offer sheet, keep Millsap
TrailBlazers.com | October 15th, 2009
PORTLAND - Thwarted in his first two attempts this summer to land a free agent, Trail Blazers general manager Nate McMillan vowed he is not done fighting. “This doesn't mean we won't stay aggressive,” he said moments after Utah general manager Kevin O'Connor phoned him to notify the Jazz would match the Blazers' four-year, $32 million offer to Paul Millsap, exercising its first right of refusal and retaining him. “We want to make the team better. But we are going to be selective,” McMillan added. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced. Utah had seven days to match an offer sheet made to Millsap by Portland. “Keeping Paul on our roster was one of our main goals this offseason,” said O’Connor. “We look forward to watching him play a key role on this team for many years to come.”
A three-year NBA veteran, Millsap (6-8, 250, Louisiana Tech) appeared in 76 games (38 starts) in 2008-09 averaging 13.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 30.1 minutes per game. As a starter Millsap increased his numbers in each statistical category, averaging 16.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists including a streak of 19-straight double-doubles, the longest streak in the NBA since 2006. Millsap finished the season with 29 double-doubles overall. The native of Monroe, La., also set career-highs in points (32 at Boston 12/15) and rebounds (17 at L.A. Lakers 1/2) while finishing fourth in voting for the league’s Most Improved Player award. “We are excited to keep Paul with the Jazz,” said Jazz president Randy Rigby. “Since he arrived in 2006 he has been an integral part of our team, establishing himself as one of the up-and-coming power forwards in the NBA.”
The Trail Blazers' offer sheet included a $10.3 million upfront payment to Millsap, between a signing bonus and a portion of his first-year salary. The Jazz faced a Friday deadline to decide about matching but made their intentions known Thursday. With the Jazz having matched the offer sheet, Millsap cannot be traded for a year without his consent and cannot be traded to Portland during that time regardless. The Blazers' options are not limited to free agents, however. With $7.7 million in cap space, the Blazers are one of two teams with significant room under the salary cap (Oklahoma City has about $10 million), putting them in position to make a financially uneven trade. Such a trade allows a team over the cap to unload a player without having to take back a matching contract. In today's financially challenging times, with several teams looking to cut payroll, the Blazers are hoping this will make them an attractive trade partner. McMillan said it is still possible the Blazers won't make a deal this summer, allowing them to enter the season with its $7.7 million cap space to use before the February trading deadline.
The Blazers have dabbled with at least two of the remaining high-profile free agents. They showed some interest in New York's David Lee, a high-energy power forward, when the free agent market opened July 1, then again after Hedo Turkoglu spurned them on July 3. But they shifted gears when they felt Lee was asking for too much money. The Blazers also touched base with point guard Andre Miller's representatives in the first week of free agency, but nothing ever materialized. Meanwhile, reports have forward Lamar Odom being pursued by the Miami Heat, where he played during the 2003-2004 season and where he still owns a home. Earlier this week, the Lakers, for whom he's played the past five years, withdrew a three-year, $27 million deal after Odom failed to respond. One source close to Odom said that the Blazers joined the bidding with a potential five-year, $40 million offer. Only time will tell.
