WEST vs. EAST Staples Center - Los Angeles, CA Feb. 20, 2011 - 6:30 PM (PST) Matchups Chris Paul G Deron Williams Kobe Bryant G Dwyane Wade Kevin Durant F Carmelo Anthony Blake Griffin F LeBron James Pau Gasol C Dwight Howard THUNDER STORM IN LA
THE FACTS: In true All-Star fashion the game started with a flurry of flashy passes, 3 point shooting, slam dunks, and alley-oops. The players were having fun early on, but the game still stayed closed and competitive. The West did finish the 1Q with a slight edge with Kevin Durant making 2 of his first 3 3PT attempts. The 2Q was a different story however as the other Thunder, Russell Westbrook went crazy recording a double-double (11 points-10 assists) in the quarter which lead to the West blowing out the East 47 to 28. For the East it was Derrick Rose who was able to salvage something out of that quarter since Deron Williams was ice cold form the field. East coach Erick Spolestra noticed this and decided to go with Rose early in the 3Q. A blow out game instantly turned to a close game, as close as 1 point, thanks to a charge by LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Derrick Rose. The East would eventually take the lead, but with out the West hot 3PT shooting and clutch shots by Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant the East might have been able to lead going into the 4Q. Just like any All-Star game, the fight was on in the 4Q as Dwayne Wade scored the most of his team high 28 points in that quarter to once again give the East a small lead. West coach Monty Williams instantly called a timeout and put the starters back in. Within the next few plays, Kevin Durant hit 2 more 3PTs setting a new record in makes and attempts. Chris Paul followed it up with an alley-oop fest, 3-in-row. One to Pau Gasol, one to Kobe Bryant, and one to Blake Griffin. The game was sealed by then and the West was on their way to victory. Paul did not record a single FG until only seconds were left to go in the game, but he did have 21 assists, which passes his career high and was only 1 assist short of tying Magic Johnson's All-Star Game assists record.
THE STAT: The average age of both teams was 26.25 yrs old and no one on the East was over 29 yrs old. But they had only 1 player younger than 25 (Derrick Rose 22). The West on the other hand had 5 players 22 yrs old or younger (Westbrook, Durant, Gordon, Beasley, Griffin). Manu Ginobili was the oldest All-Star at 33 yrs old
QUOTABLE: Chris Paul on scoring only 2 points, "It's all about having fun. I was having fun making the plays throwing lobs. I didn't need to score. I knew Kevin was hot from 3, I knew Blake didn't miss, I knew Kobe...well I know Kobe is easy to get assist from. haha."
HOT: Blake Griffin did not miss a single shot in the game going 9 for 9, which also included 1 from 3-point land
NOT: Deron Williams dished out a team high 12 assists but was very poor from the field going 2-10, Derrick Rose (23 points 9 assists) was used more down the stretch to lead the East back into the game
GOOD MOVE: Kobe Bryant got LeBron James in the air on a pump fake, then drove to the basket to posterize Andrea Bargnani
BAD MOVE: Raymond Felton had a clear shot at a layup but came up short and was blocked by the rimFinal Score:

NEARING THE TRADE DEADLINE, SPURS ROLL THE DYESS
The Spurs and the Bucks deal again as owner Thierry Tirieux has approved another deal to bring in a Buck. The team felt that McDyess was on the wrong side of 30 and that they had enough veteran experience on the team, which is why they went an acquired forward Drew Gooden, who has had a stint in San Antonio before an put in a good season under Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.
The Spurs also acquired a 2nd round draft pick from the Bucks, which can not be taken lightly given the Spurs successful track record in drafting late.
Guard Garrett Temple was also included in the deal for contractual reasons, but was cut immediately after and signed with the D-League.

THE FACTS: The Clippers finally end their dreaded 9 game road trip which they finished at 4-5 with a win in this game. For two very offensively minded teams, the offense was not very sharp early on as the Suns did not score until 4 minutes into the 1Q and on the Clippers side, DeAndre Jordan was the team leader with 11 points. The Suns could not stop the pick-and-roll, until Marcin Gortat checked into the game and completely changed the tempo of the game. Eventually Vince Carter took control of the Suns on offense to help them take the lead going into half time. In the 3Q the Suns seemed to be in complete control as the Clippers were struggling to find an offense. Once again it was Eric Gordon helping to cut the lead to within 10 going into the 4Q. Then the Suns went on an 8-0 to start the quarter. A VDN timeout sparked Blake Griffin to turn it on and help the Clippers go on a 20-4 run to cut the lead to 2. After that the Suns started to fall apart. A Vince Carter 3 would cut a 4 point lead to 1, but an Eric Gordon 3 on the other end put the Clippers back up by 4. Steve Nash answered with his only 3pointer of the game and a missed shot by Baron Davis lead to the Suns with a chance to take the lead. Vince Carter took a 3 to try to take the lead but missed. Baron Davis got the rebound and was fouled. He made 1 of 2 from the Free Throw line. Without a Suns timeout, Vince Carter rebounded the ball and threw it beyond half court in a last chance attempt to win the game. The ball fell short and the Clippers won.
THE STAT: Vince Carter scored a game high 24 points in the 1st half, but only 9 points in the 2nd Half, missing a corner 3 that would have been a game winner
QUOTABLE: Antoine Walker, "They clearly just wanted it more..."
HOT: Blake Griffin only had 6 points in the first half (2 points in the 1Q and 4 points in the 2Q), but in the second half he lead a comeback with 17 points, Griffin also had a career high 17 rebounds
NOT: Ben Wallace isn't expected to score, but is expected to play defense, Wallace failed to record any stat expect for 1 rebound
GOOD MOVE: Part of the Clippers 4Q run, Baron Davis stole the ball and lobbed it to Blake Griffin off the back board to cut the lead to only 2
MOVE: Blake Griffin went up for a dunk and was blocked by Marcin Gortat, but the ball somehow still flew into the basket as Blake was hanging on the rim
BAD MOVE: Blake Griffin was open for an alley-oop, but threw it a little hard and missed the dunk

THE FACTS: The Clippers must have been thrilled to finally play in front of their fans again as they completely dominated the Timberwolves in the first half. Baron Davis set a new Clippers Franchise record with 17 assists in a half during that time. The Timberwolves just had not answer for Baron Davis, who was picking apart their defense and finding his teammates with easy basket after easy basket on each play. With the Clippers having a lead as high as 29-points, they must have started to lost interest in the 2nd Half. All-Star Michael Beasley did his best to keep the Timberwolves in the game and even lead a comback to cut the lead to as close as 12. The deficit was just too unbearable and the Clippers were just to good and in the end the Timberwolves would fall by 17 points.
THE STAT: All-Star comparison: All-Stars Michael Beasley and Blake Griffin both scored 35 points each, All-Star Eric Gordon scored 22 points to go along with Blake's
QUOTABLE: Michael Beasley, "When you see them doing that (dunking) all on you, on every play...it really messes with you..."
HOT: 2-man game with Blake Griffin and Baron Davis. Baron Davis had 16 points-20 assists helping Blake Griffin with a 35 point-20 rebound game
NOT: The Clippers lost focus in the 2nd Half as they allowed a 29-point lead fall to as low as 12 points
GOOD MOVE: Despite all of Blake Griffin's alley-oops, his best move was a pump fake on Kevin Love that lead to a reverse pump slam, a la the Human Highlight Film
