SOPHOMORES vs. ROOKIES Staples Center - Los Angeles, CA Feb. 18, 2011 - 6:00 PM (PST) Matchups Stephen Curry G John Wall Jrue Holiday G Evan Turner Chase Budinger F Paul George DeJuan Blair F Blake Griffin Hashem Thabeet C DeMarcus Cousins THE CHIEF HAS ARRIVED *This games was played with two 20-Minute halves and fouls were recorded, but players cannot foul out.
THE FACTS: Blake Griffin, John Wall DeMarcus Cousins, and Evan Turner were some of the most celebrated college players turning rookies in the NBA that were featured in the first major even of the NBA All-Star Weekend, but it was the rookie out of Wake Forest, Al-Farouq Aminu that stole the show. Aminu took home the Rookie Challenge MVP after scoring a game high 32 points and setting a rookie record 6 blocked shots. The Rookies started strong, dominating the point as the Sophomore team was composed mainly of guards. But the smart play of the Sophomores allowed them to stay in the game. In the end, the Sophomores had no answer for Al-Farouq Aminu. Aminu was too fast for any of the bigs to matchup with and too tall for any of the guards to defend. Aminu had his way against the Sophomores and that was the story of the night.
THE STAT: The Rookie had a team composed of bigs while the Sophomores had mainly guards, the Rookies dominated points in the paint 86 to 48
QUOTABLE: John Wall, "Wow, after seeing up close what Al-Farouq (Aminu) and Blake (Griffin) can do...I have to say I might be a little jealous of my ol' Kentucky running mate (Eric Bledsoe). Haha!"
HOT: Al-Farouq Aminu scored a game high 32 points, his career high is only 22 points. He also set a new record for 6 blocks during the Rookie vs Sophomore game
NOT: Brandon Jennings could not buy a basket shooting 1 for 8, but still finished with 10 points thanks to the free throw line
GOOD MOVE: Blake Griffin tipped the ball away from DeJuan Blair and went coast-to-coast for a windmill jam
BAD MOVE: 6'0" former UCLA point guard Darren Collison blocked a potential Blake Griffin slam dunk in the open court
Injuries: Sophomores' Serge Ibaka (Out-Torn Hand Ligament) was replaced by Warriors' Reggie Williams *Chase Budinger was inserted into the starting lineup

NBA ALL-STAR SATURDAY NIGHT
STEVE KERR WINS IT FOR TEAM CHICAGO
Typically one of the least anticipated events of the weekend, former Bulls sharpshooter helped TEAM CHICAGO bring home the hardware in dramatic fashion. Round one started with a less than specular shooting by TEAM LOS ANGELES. It was the Sparks Noelle Quinn who pulled the load while former Lakers current Assistant Coach Brian Shaw and Clippers Nick Young struggled to make their baskets. TEAM LOS ANGELES was eliminated in the first round. TEAM CHICAGO had a solid first round as the reacquired and re-energized Ben Gordon lead his teammates and sunk the half court shot just before the 1 minute mark. TEAM NEW YORK completely fell short as they exceeded the time limit before even being able to attempt the half court shot. TEAM TEXAS was able to advance to the final round to face TEAM CHICAGO.
Going first, TEAM TEXAS clearly wanted to put the pressure on as they all hit their first shots and former Dallas Maverick/San Antonio Spur Michael Finley hit the half court shot on only his second attempt to finish with a remarkable 58.5 seconds. TEAM CHICAGO needed to shot perfect to prevent TEAM TEXAS from winning this contest 2 years in a row. Ben Gordon thought he made it, but surprisingly missed a corner shot and had to quickly run back to shoot again. The rest of the shots flowed in rhythm following that and it was Steve Kerr sprinting to the half court rack with the clock still reading 56 seconds. Kerr grabbed the ball and flunk it to the rim....SWISH! The clock was stopped at 58.2 seconds. They reviewed the tape and the time stood! TEAM CHICAGO wins the Haier Shooting Stars by 0.3 seconds, thanks to shooting legend Steve Kerr.

RONDO BLURS BY COMPETITION TO WIN SKILLS CHALLENGE
The newest competition added to All-Star Weekend, but it had he highest All-Star power as all of the contestants will also be participating in the big game this Sunday. Last years champion breezed by the course but did not appear as motivated as the year he won it missing a few easy passes and a couple free throws. Paul posted a decent time, but it was not enough for him to advance to the final round, eliminating his chances to repeat. Derrick Rose, the leading fan vote getter to compete in this event, also seemed to run the course without a sense of urgency. Russell Westbrook on the other hand was a blur in the first round as he was showing off for his family, friends, and any other UCLA fan in Los Angeles as he posted the best first round time. Rajon Rondo struggled at the beginning of the course but his veteran poise allowed him to sneak into the final round to face Westbrook.
The final round was another story as both competitors really pushed hard to win it all. Rajon Rondo, just fresh from running the course was up first and clearly took advantage. He must have been used to the course the second time around as he blurred by the pylons and layed it up to finish with 1 Min 2 Seconds. Russell Westbrook was fluid through the course as well, but it was clear that he was about just half a step behind Rondo. With Westbrook on the home stretch, he had a chance to possibly beat Rondo, but he decided to do the spectacular and tried to finish with an under the legs dunk. Westbrook threw it just a little too hard and the ball bounced off the rim. He quickly ran back and made the basket, but by then the time was too late as Rajon Rondo has won the Taco Bells Skills Challenge.

RAY ALLEN WINS A LACKLUSTER SHOOTOUT
Daniel Gibson started the show, but was extremely flat. He made a few shots but never went on any sort of a streak finishing the first round with only 6 points. Dorell Wright went up next and completely killed it as he was deadeye to finish with the highest in the round with 15. Ray Allen was solid, but seemed to struggle with his shot. He did hit the ones that mattered, the last money ball to give him 13 that would let him sneak into the final round. Jason Terry started off hot in the beginning, but after the 3rd rack he started missing his shots and finished with 11 to just barely miss the final round. Wilson Chandler, the league leader in 3 point percentage was next and had a solid round to finish just behind Wright with 14 points. Last year's champion Paul Pierce was next and hit most of his money balls, but he fell of the mark on all of his other shots. Pierce was eliminated from the first round and lost all hopes to being a repeat championship.
Ray Allen started the final round even worse than the last. But once again he hit his money balls including the last one on the final rack, finishing with 12 points. Wilson Chandler came up next, but seemed to struggle as well, which is odd since he is actually playing on his home floor. Chandler had a chance to pass Allen, but his money ball rimmed out as he finished with 11. The hottest shooter of the night was clearly Dorell Wright, but just as the others he could not find his shot. After missing the entire first 2 racks before making his first one mid way through the 3rd rack, Wright caught on fire. But it was too late. Wright had a chance to make the final money ball and force a tie and a sudden death battle with Allen, but the ball sailed long. Ray Allen just narrowly outlast his competition to win the Foot Locker 3-Point Shootout.

SPRITE SLAM DUNK CONTEST
(Click Black Bar to Reveal)
GRIFFIN WOWS THE CROWD TO WIN THE SLAM DUNK CONTEST
The time has finally come. The most anticipated event the NBA has to offer in the month of February. It is...the SPRITE SLAM DUNK CONTEST featuring Los Angeles Clippers own, Blake Griffin.
Breaking News: Just moments after Ray Allen was crowned the winner of the Foot Locker 3-point contest, an announcement was made that James Harden is going to replace Serge Ibaka in the slam dunk contest. Ibaka had recently torn a ligament in his hand and just recently had surgery on it. Ibaka had been practicing and testing out his hand to see if was still going to be able to compete during All-Star weekend. It had came down to Thunder upper management to pull Ibaka out of the contest and allow his hand to heal completely as they will need him down the stretch for their playoff push later in the post season.
Here is a complete video recap of the night's dunks.
First Round - Dunk 1:
Hakim Warrick - Score: 39Wrap Around the Back to a Reverse Windmill.
James Harden* - Score: 42Over the Shoulder Self-Alley-Oop to a 360 Slam.
Andre Iguodala - Score: 50Around the Back to a 360 Honey Dip Dunk
Blake Griffin - Score: 50Taking off from the Free Throw Line and Jumping over 3 Barrels to a 2-Handed Windmill
The first set of dunks started out slow, but by the end the fans were going crazy. Hakim Warrick started off, but got a low score. One judge said that his dunk was not really that hard since he put the ball behind his back while he was still on the floor. James Harden filled in for the injured Serge Ibaka and was not expected much because of the last minute notice, but the LA native pulled off a spectacular self-alley-oop 360. This only set the stage for Andre Iguodala, as he went for the Vince Carter Honey Dip-Elbow in the Rim Dunk...but added a 360! The judges put 10's across the board. The crowd was buzzing and Blake Griffin has yet to go. Blake Griffin brought out some barrels and positioned them in the middle of the lane. As the judges were trying to figure out what was about to happen...Blake Griffin jumped from the free throw line over the barrels and capped it off with a Windmill! Instant standing ovation an a 50 from the judges. This is only the first set of dunks and the bar is already set so high.
First Round - Dunk 2:
Hakim Warrick - Score: 40Bounce off the floor Self-Alley-Oop to a Fake Behind the Back under the rim slam.
James Harden* - Score: 35Self-Alley-Oop around the arm to a 2-Handed Windmill
Andre Iguodala - Score: 49Spinning Bounce off the floor Self-Alley-Oop to a Windmill
Blake Griffin - Score: 50Over the Shoulder Self-Alley-Oop to a 360 Between the Legs Dunk
Blake Griffin's dunk was so amazing, it made people wonder what else he had in store. Unfortunately for Hakim Warrick, he had to follow that act. Warrick had a very nice dunk as he tucked the ball behind his back and ended up pulling it back out the same way before slamming down the dunk on the baseline. Harden did another self-alley-oop and finished it with a windmill, but it was no where near the level of his first dunk. Andre Iguodala is almost a lock in the finals now with Blake Griffin, which is possibly why his second dunk was a bit safer. The move was spectacular, but only drew a 49 from the judges, Iggy complained and the crowed booed as they were expecting another 50. The crowd got another 50 though, but from Blake Griffin. The crowd went into a roar as Griffin threw the ball to himself behind his shoulder with enough hangtime left over to spin 360 degrees AND put the ball between his legs.
Second Round - Dunk 1:
Andre Iguodala - Score: 49Bounce off the Floor Under the Leg Self-Alley-Oop to a Between the Legs Dunk
Blake Griffin - Score: 50Cartwheel to a Between the Legs Dunk
The first set of the final round had Iggy going first. His first attempt was very tricky going under his legs both before and during being in the air, but once again the judges felt he was just slightly below their expectations and got a 49. Blake did a trick of his own as he preformed a cartwheel before flat jumping into another smooth between the legs dunk for another 50.
Second Round - Dunk 2:
Andre Iguodala - Score: 47Bounce off the Floor Self-Alley-Oop to a 1-Handed Front Windmill
Blake Griffin - Score: 50Beyond Free Throw Line Dunk over the roof of a car REPLAY: Look where he took off from!
The last dunks of the night. The last event of the night. The last crowd electrifying act of the 2011 All-Star weekend was finally here. Blake Griffin has shown a clear advantage with the fans and the judges, but Andre Iguodala has shown to be a very solid opponent. Iggy may of just ran out of moves as his final dunk seemed a bit too simple compared to his previous attempts. All Blake had to do now was score at least a 47, which was what Iggy just got, but everyone in the building knew Blake was not going to just let the championship barely come to him. He was going to put on a show! Baron Davis came out in a green Sprite sponsored car! The crowd was standing, the judges were standing as Blake positions himself at halfcourt while Baron parked the car in the middle of the lane....
Then, Blake took off sprinting! He jumped over the ROOF of the car! clearing it completely before jamming in a thunderous 1-Handed slam! The judges were going crazy, jumping over the scorers table to congratulate Blake before running back to put up a 10 toward Blake perfect night of all 50's. But the fun did not stop there. Blake told the guys to put the replay up on the jumbotron. The replay came on, zoomed it, and paused just before Blake took off. His feet were clearly BEHIND the free throw line! The crowd went nuts! Cheering "BLAKE!" "BLAKE!" "BLAKE!" "BLAKE!"
Blake was just smiling as he walked over to Baron, who was still stunned himself at the replay.
