Danny Ainge was sitting in his office, looking through the cap space of rival teams. With Pierce and Allen still free agents, he had to be wary of any potential trades in case he was force to rebuild. Just then, he heard his phone ring and quickly answered.

"Hello?"
"Yo Danny, its me, Pierce. I just got done talking with Ray Allen and I have some great news! I convinced him to resign with the Celtics with me!"
"Really?! That's fantastic news!" exclaimed Danny, who was noticeably ecstatic about the news. "What made you and Ray decide to resign so quickly?"
"Me and Ray were talking about the Finals loss and we both decided that we wanted revenge. Besides, I've been with this team all my career and I plan to keep it that way."
"Great! Just stop by my office tomorrow with your agent and we'll work something out. Make sure you bring Ray too."
"Make sure you tell Doc too.", Pierce added. "He'll resign for sure when he hears about us coming back."
"Actually, I'll give him a call right now. Thanks for reminding me."
"Alright, talk to you later!" Pierce said right before hanging up.

Danny went ahead and dialed Doc River's phone number. After almost a minute of ringing, somebody finally picked up.
"Hello?" asked Doc.
"Doc? It's me, Danny. I've got some great news for you! Pierce and Allen just called and they agreed to resign with the Celtics!"
Doc Rivers went silent for about ten seconds. Danny sensed something was bothering him.
"You there?" asked Danny.
"Yea, I'm still here. That's great news." Doc stated in a sad tone.
"Is something bothering you, Doc? You don't sound very excited."
Doc once again went strangely silent, though not quite as long as last time.
"Listen, Danny. Do you remember my son, Austin?"
"Of course, he's a great kid. Excellent player too. Why do you ask? Is he sick?"
"Oh no, nothing like that!" Doc yelled. ""Actually, the problem is that he's been doing well."
Puzzled, Danny asked, "What does that mean?"
"Well, even though Austin has been tearing it up in college, I've been too busy coaching to see any of his games.", Doc said remorsefully. "It's starting to make me feel guilty."

"Well, I could always give you some extra time off if that would help." Danny offered.
"Actually, I was thinking about retiring from coaching entirely..." said Doc, bracing for Danny's response.
Ainge was shocked. His players including Ray and Paul made it very vocal how much they wanted Doc Rivers to coach their team this year. What was he going to tell them tomorrow during contract negotiations?
"Well, if that's the way you feel then its fine with me." Ainge said almost unemotionally. He knew this was as hard for Doc to tell him as it was for him to hear it so he tried to make it as easy as possible.
"I know I'm letting the team down but its been something I've been thinking about since last year." said Doc in a guilty tone.
"Don't worry about it! You just want to spend time with your family. There's nothing wrong with that! We can always ask Thibodeau to take over. He deserves a coaching opportunity anyway." said Danny, trying desperately to make Doc feel better about his decision.
"Actually, that might not be possible either. Tom called me earlier. He's just been offered the job of Bull's head coach..."

Pierce, Allen re-signs; Team still has holes to fill

Image

Sept. 20, 2010, Boston(AP) - Celtic General Manager announced today that he has resigned both Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to new contracts. Paul Pierce will receive a 4 year, 61 Million dollar contract and Ray Allen will receive a 2 year, 20 million dollar contract.

"I've played my whole career with the Celtics." said Celtic captain Paul Pierce in an interview with the press earlier. "This will most likely be my last NBA contract and I wanted it to be with this team for another chance at a title." Ray Allen also had some statements for the press. "I may have been able to get more money with another team, but I would have been sacrificing the chance for a title. Both me and Paul want another ring and we both feel our best chances are here."

However, despite resigning two very important star players, there are still many holes left to fill. Just this morning, Celtic coach Doc Rivers and assistant coach Tom Thibodeau have confirmed plans to leave the team. In another separate press conference, Doc Rivers said that "I'm doing this for my family. I'm doing it for my son. I haven't been able to see my son play ever since he's made it to college and I don't want to miss out on him." Thibodeau was not at either press conference, but it has been confirmed by anonymous sources that he has indeed accepted the role of Chicago Bulls head coach.

Sux to lose Doc :( and weird Thibodeau wasn't considered for the promo, but maybe Chitown offered more money idk... nice job securing Pierce/Allen (even though Pierce's contract is a year or two too long for my taste)

oh and btw, it's technically "re-sign", there's a difference ;) (only being a stickler because i like how your Assoc. is going so far)

"I'm sorry sir, but your just not qualified for this job. I need somebody that my player's will respect and frankly, your a Blazer's janitor. My players won't respect a janitor." Danny Ainge said to the man on the other side of his office desk.
"But what about my suit? And my knowledge of defensive win shares?" The man said in shock.
"You really should give Mr.Knight his suit back. I'm sure you don't want to get sued." Danny answered.
The man let out a loud sigh and said "Well, I better be going. I have another job opportunity in Portland to attend to."
"Uh, alright...good luck!" Danny said holding back his laughter until the man left his office. Why would any franchise hire a janitor for a coaching or general manager job?
He picked up his clipboard and put an X in red ink next to a box labeled "Washburn" and quickly skimmed through the rest of the names. He looked at his watched and saw that the time was 5:00 PM. He realized that it was already late and he still had 20 more people to see for the job. He sighed and sat down forcefully into his chair. It was then that his phone began to ring.
"Danny, there's a Mr. Dunbar here to see you."
Ainge looked at his clipboard and saw the name on the list.
"Go ahead and send him in." Danny ordered.
Danny Ainge heard his door opening and quickly turned around. When he saw the man, he was shocked by how young he was. He shook his head, thinking it would take a miracle for the person in front of him to get hired.

"Mr. Dunbar, I presume?" Danny said in a loud voice. "I'm guessing you're applying for the head coaching job?"
"Yes, sir! Here's my resume!" Brandon handed his resume to Danny. He was noticeably nervous about the situation he was in.
Danny took a moment to read through the resume. Danny seemed to be genuinely impressed by what he was reading and after what seemed like ages, he handed it back to him.
"Well, Mr. Dunbar. I have to say I'm impressed by your credentials. I also like that you've been a loyal Celtic fan for years. You gotta have passion for the game and your team to make it in this job!."
"T-Thank you, sir! I've been a Celtic fan for as long as I can remember!" Brandon said with enthusiasm.
"Well, that's good to hear!" Danny said with a smile. Brandon couldn't believe what was happening. He thought for sure that he wouldn't get hired before he came in.
"I'll be honest Dunbar, you do have impressive credentials but I'm a little concerned about your age. This is a veteran team and we need a coach that our players can respect. Tell me, how old are you?" Danny asked.
"I'm 20, sir." replied Brandon. He started getting nervous again. He had a feeling he wasn't going to get the job after all.
"You see where I'm getting at? I'm not so sure a 20 year old should be the one telling our 30 year old players what to do."
"Does that mean I'm not getting the job?"
The room went silent for a few seconds as Danny sat in his chair. Brandon was on the edge of his seat, waiting for his reply.
"Look, I'll make a deal with you." Danny stated, finally breaking the silence that was filling the room. "I have about 20 more people to see today. If none of them have the credentials you do, then your hired.
"And what are the chances that you don't find someone?"
"The Celtic organization is the league's oldest and proudest franchises. " Danny answered proudly. "There's no doubt in my mind that someone with amazing coaching abilities will come through that door."
Brandon shook Danny's hand and proceeded to leave the office. He had a long drive ahead of him.

When Brandon finally got home, he hopped onto his couch and turned on the TV. Strangely, the TV was on ESPN and when he noticed it was another debate on LeBron's basketball abilities, he quickly turned it back off. For a few minutes, he sat their in silence thinking about the job interview. He kept thinking about how someone better than him was bound to take his job. Who wouldn't want to coach a title contender?
Just then he heard his phone ringing. He got up off the couch and picked up the phone. On the other side of the phone was a strangely familiar voice.

"Mr.Dunbar? It's me, Danny. Congratulations! You are now the head coach of the Boston Celtics!"

Celtics sign Dunbar and Frank to Coaching Positions

Image

Oct. 1, 2010 Boston(AP) - After a week of searching, Celtic GM Danny Ainge has finally found the replacement for Celtic head coach Doc Rivers and assistant coach Tom Thibodaeu. Earlier today, coaching newcomer Brandon Dunbar and ex-Nets coach Lawrence Frank were officially hired as head coach and assistant coach respectively. "They were the best talent available to us at the time" said Danny Ainge during an interview. "With a team filled with as many talented players as we have, we need an equally talented coaching staff to take control.

Not even a day after being hired, doubt is already being cast on Dunbar. "We knew that age was going to be factor before we hired him." said Danny Ainge. "Respect could be a problem, but I feel that as far as coaching potential goes, the sky's the limit for him."

"You wanted to speak with me, Danny?" Brandon asked. He had just got to the Celtic's gym when he got a message saying that Danny Ainge wanted to speak with him.
"Yes I did. Please take a seat." Brandon took a seat in the chair adjacent to his desk. The chair was surprisingly comfortable despite it looking like it had seen better days.
"So, what did you want to speak to me about?" Brandon asked.
"As you know, this will be the first time the team has ever seen you. I wanted to warn you that today is the day you need to make a strong impression with the players." Danny said sternly.
"Why would this be the first time the team has seen me? Haven't they seen a picture of me in an article or something?"
"Actually, I purposely made sure that they didn't until you showed up here today." None of this made any sense to Brandon. Wouldn't it be easier to make an impression if the team has already seen you before?
"So what do they know about me?"
"Other than your name, nothing."
Brandon got out of his chair to shake Danny's hand and walked towards the door. As he was heading out the door, he could hear Danny yell "Good luck!". After he left the office, he had a new feeling of nervousness that he didn't have prior to the meeting. He had a feeling that this was going to be an awkward first impression.

Brandon entered the gym and saw two teams playing a 5-on-5 scrimmage against each other. The first team was made up of the Celtics starters while the other team was made up of the bench players. Brandon took a seat on one of bleachers and decided to watch the game. He was surprised that no one notice him enter the gym, so he tried to remain inconspicuous. Because there was no scoreboard, he had to rely on the chatter of the players on both sides to keep up with the score. After about 20 minutes of gameplay, it was the final possession of the game. From what he had heard from both teams it was 88-89. The bench was winning only by one point and the first team to reach 90 would be considered the winner. The starters gave the ball to Pierce as he attempted a few crossovers on Marquis Daniels. Just when it looked like Pierce was going to take the game winning jumpshot, he passed it to an open Kevin Garnett under the basket. Garnett caught the ball with ease and fiercely dunked the ball. The dunk was so loud that it echoed through the empty gym. Brandon carefully stepped out of the bleachers onto the floor and began to clap. The players all turned around, surprised that they were being watched the whole time. They all walked towards him and silently stared at him. Garnett decided to finally break the silence and blurted out:

"Who the fuck are you?"
Brandon wasn't expecting him to say that and went silent for a few seconds. He finally regained his composure, extended his hand, and answered.
"I'm your new head coach. Glad to meet you!"
The players looked at each other in disbelief. They began to whisper to each other things like "He's the coach!?" and "Look how young he is?" After another awkward silence, Kevin Garnett turned back around to face him, this time with a smile on his face.
"Alright, Mr. Head Coach. Can you do me a favor?"
Brandon wasn't sure where Garnett was going with this but he answered anyway. "Of course, what can I help you with?"
"Go tell Danny that his practical jokes get worse every year." Brandon didn't know what to say. The players thought he was some elaborate joke. He opened his moth to reply, but was interrupted by a voice coming from the other side of the court.

"This isn't a joke, Kevin." Everyone including Brandon turned around to see Danny Ainge standing by the door. Danny ran to the other side of the court where Brandon and the players were.
"Do you mind if I talk to these players really quick, Brandon?" Danny Ainge asked. Brandon gave him a nod of approval and watched as the players circled around Danny. He could hear him whispering to them something, but he wasn't close enough to hear it. After about five minutes of whispering, Paul Pierce emerged out of the huddle and approached Brandon with his hand out.

"Hello, Mr. Dunbar. Welcome to the team."
