KOBE BRYANT AND LEBRON JAMES PUT ON SHOW

Cleveland Cavaliers 99 @ Los Angeles Lakers 104

Jan 3, Los Angeles – Kobe Bryant came up big down the stretch as he led his Lakers to their second win in two days and their first win at home for 2005. Bryant scored 33 points and dished out 14 assists as he outplayed Sophomore Sensation Lebron James in the first and fourth quarters. Bryant made the key free throws in the dying seconds to ice the victory.

Lebron James scored 31 points for his team and Jeff McInnis poured in 23. Although being limited to 3-12 shooting in the first quarter, James was able to come back out and play fearlessly against Kobe Bryant’s defensive pressure for the rest of the game. It showed as he scored 10 straight points at the start of the second quarter to lead the Cavs back into the game.

Kobe Bryant was supported by Chris Mihm’s 17 points and 8 rebounds, Kwame Brown’s 11 and 13 and Kareem Rush’s 8 fourth quarter points. The Lakers who have had trouble closing out games during the season had it no different way last night as they let another double digit lead slip way. With an 11 point lead at third quarter time, Los Angeles came out behind Bryant to score the first 8 points of the quarter but then they suffered another late meltdown.

“We were winning and then we let Bron and his boys take over the flow of the game,” Kobe said, “We need to learn how to control games like these but I guess we’re young and that’s why we are learning now rather than later on in the season.” The Cavs were able to keep the game close until the final minute of the game. Kobe and Kareem Rush then decided to take over.

LA was up 96-95 with 1:03 left, when Bryant stole the ball off an inbounds pass to launch it into Rush’s hands for a wide open three. Jeff McInnis scored a fade away jump shot over the outstretched arms of Juan Dixon but Rush hit right back in his face with a second long range bomb on the other end. When Lebron James had an open path to the hoop he scored to bring his team closer to the Lakers at 102-99 with 27.2 left on the clock. Rush was fouled and sent to the line where he missed and the race was on for the Cavs to score and try to tie the game. McInnis rushed a desperate attempt with 14.3 seconds remaining; Drew Gooden grabbed the board to pass out to James who missed another attempt. Bryant then retrieved the rebound and fouled instantaneously as he dropped the game winning free throws with 2.9 second left in the game.

“We were so close,” Lebron commented after the game, “The Lakers are a very good team and Kobe is one of the best in our league. We’re not worried about the loss because we kept it close but it’s hard because we were too close to winning.”

The game was filled with boos from the entire STAPLES crowd although every fan inside the arena would have to agree that the final minute of the third quarter was the most entertaining as hometown hero Kobe Bryant individually engineered a Lakers’ 11-2 run. Bryant came off the bench to steal the ball 4 times and on all four steals; he set up all of his on court team mates to score once each and finished the run with a three point play by himself.

The win moved Los Angeles up from twelfth to tenth place in the Western Conference as the team hunts for a playoff spot, the first year without Shaquille O’neal in the paint.

NOTES

F Karl Malone was spotted on the Lakers bench arguing with Rudy Tomjanovic about playing time, Tomjanovic refused to answer questions after the game… The game was played with vintage jerseys. Los Angeles played in their traditional blue uniforms from the 60’s and the Cavs played with jerseys from the 80’s… The Laker’s have not won more than two games in a row all season and will attempt to in two days time against the Pistons…

FINALS REMATCH CLOSER THAN FINALS

Los Angeles Lakers 118 @ Detroit Pistons 115

Jan 5, Detroit – Mo Town must have been blue after last nights thrilling rematch between the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers in their only rematch of the year. Both teams lost key inside players but the respective team’s stars stepped up to help keep the game entertaining yet close until the very end.

Chris Mihm suffered a back injury early in the game but later returned to the court as his team needed him for inside help. Mihm scored 13 points and had 3 blocked shots but it was clearly visible he struggled on court to move around easily and left in the third quarter and didn’t return to the action. Mihm has been sidelined for the next 8 days, joining Lamar Odom on the injury list. Luckily for the Lakers, two time defensive player of the year, all-star and Detroit’s most valuable player Ben Wallace went down in a separate collision in the paint and left the game also. The Lakers took advantage of the Piston’s loss of Wallace as Brian Grant had his best game of the season scoring 24 points on 11-15 shooting and grabbing 17 rebounds.

Grant’s efforts were credited to the win as was Kwame Brown’s 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks but it was all Kobe Bryant as he engineered an amazing triple double performance with 43 points (17-22 FG, 9-12 FT), 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Bryant completed the achievement with 1:46 remaining with a pass to Brian Grant for another open lay up.

“Kobe was our best player tonight and he raised the bar when the defending champs played tonight,” Brian Grant said of his team mate, “Without Chris (Mihm) and Lamar (Odom) we will need to rely on him more for the next few games. They are very important.” Caron Butler also said, “Kobe hit all of us with great passes and we had so many open looks. Kudos to the Pistons for their intensity but I believe we did well to score so many against the undisputedly best defensive team in our league.”

Los Angeles was able to counter a huge night from Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups and Rasheed Wallace. Rip had 32 points on 15-25 shooting as he weaved past defenders and sunk shots in Kobe Bryant’s face. Billups had 18 points and 6 assists while Sheed scored 23 points on a dominant 11-15.

The night was a frustrating one for Kobe Bryant. It started off with the Lakers pulling out to a 10 point lead but Mihm’s departure left the downhearted Lakers to allow Detroit to go on a 12-0 run to finish the quarter. The second quarter saw an upset Kobe Bryant shouting at team mate Caron Butler for two errant passes which prompted Chucky Atkins to play a bulk of minutes at shooting guard. Kobe Bryant’s anger boiled over when two calls were against him. One a three second violation and the following was that he had his foot out of bounds. Bryant threw the ball in the stands and argued with referee Violet Palmer before being slapped with a technical foul as the Lakers called a timeout to cool his anger.
The Lakers battled from 14 points down to level the game with 54.3 seconds remaining. Kobe Bryant came up big in the clutch again. The game locked at 113-113, the Lakers ran down the clock and Bryant scored with a dunk over Rasheed Wallace. Billups then drove in on the other end of the court only to be sent sprawling backwards by Kwame Brown’s block which was clearly a foul but the officials didn’t call it. Bryant was then intentionally fouled and missed his first free throw to allow the Pistons a chance to catch up.

Rip Hamilton then scored a jumper over Bryant with 18.9 second remaining to bring the Pistons up to 1 point down. They were forced to foul Bryant who surprisingly missed both free throws and the Pistons had a chance to win it. As the Pistons rushed the ball down court, Juan Dixon intercepted a pass intended for Lindsey Hunter and the Lakers called timeout. Kobe then received the ball to be fouled and finally sank both of his free throws. Detroit squandered their chance to tie it up when Derrick Coleman missed a 9 foot jump shot and Bryant grabbed the rebound with 3.2 second left to run the clock down.

“This was fantastic,” Bryant who was overjoyed said, “Last year we struggled against the Pistons and today we were able to win with two men down! They’re the defending champs and they’re sort of a measuring stick right now for us. We know we can ball with the best of them!”

Last year, the Pistons defeated the Lakers easily in the Finals 4-1 which led to Los Angeles rebuilding. In a huge upset which saw the team of Kobe, Karl Malone, Shaq O’neal and Gary Payton lose to what beat writers call a ‘champion team,’ Detroit was the first Eastern Conference champions since the Chicago Bulls of 98.

NOTES

Karl Malone who has not played any minutes for the last three games will be automatically inserted into the starting five… The next game is against the Maimi Heat- tipped to raise the roof… Chris Mihm was diagnosed with the same injury as Lamar odom… The Lakers are now 8-8 and have risen from tenth to ninth place in the Western Conference and from third to second in their division…

HEAT CAUSE HEARTBREAKER FOR LAKERS

Maimi Heat 112 @ Los Angeles Lakers 110

Jan 7, Los Angeles - Superman and Flash were just too much for Kobe Bryant to handle. Despite Bryant's own superhero performance of 46 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals couldn't oust the Miami Heat from winning in Shaquille O'neal's return home. The super duo of O'nael and Wade took over down the stretch as Miami handed Los Angeles it's first loss in four matches.

The Heat were 5 points down with 3:42 left in the game but clawed their way back into the match despite being down by double digits early in the final period. With exceptional defence and composure, the Heat used a 10-2 run to close the gap and then steal the lead. The score was 105-104, advantage Miami when things started to heat up.

With 39.6 seconds left, Lakers center Kwame Brown who had 18 points and 13 rebounds was sent to the line. He failed to capitalise on the opportunity as he missed both of his free shots. Eddie Jones then rushed the ball downcourt and sunk a three pointer to widen the margin to 5 points. Bryant got the ball off an inbounds play on the right hand side of the court and drove in towards the hoop.

A hard collision had Bryant on the ground as teammates rushed to his side. The lakers called another timeout as Bryant recooperated and returned to sink both free throws. However, Eddie Jones caused the STAPLES crowd to boo as he sunk yet another jumper at the right time for his team and sending the dagger cutting the Laker's heart even deeper as Miami took a 110-106 lead with 28.9 seconds remaining.

Kwame Brown's shot attempt was blocked by O'neal but Bryant scooped the ball up and scored a fadeaway over Wade. The lakers fou O'neal straight away who scored one of two free throws. "At that point, we sort of felt we didn't have the strength to pull off a win," Chucky Atkins said, "But Kobe perservered and got us back into it." With 15 seconds remaining, Bryant caught the ball; wide open, running towards the hoop and converted a spectacular baseline dunk. Kobe then intercepted the ball off Eddie Jones at halfway but Dwyane Wade's outstretched arms prompted Bryant to pass to an open Juan Dixon. But Dixon's running lay up rolled in and then out as the STAPLES crowd all simultaneously went, 'oooh.'

The Lakers were forced to foul O'neal who made only his second free throw and the Lake Show called timeout. But the fairytale ending didn't fully materialise. With 4.9 seconds left, the Lakers threw the ball in the Kobe who scored a running three pointer at the buzzer. The officials however, caused a riot as they ruled it not included in play and reasoned that it left Bryant's hand too late.

One of the referres unnamed for security reasons said, "It was hard because of the momentum of the game but the ball clearly left the player's (Kobe) hand too late. It was clear to myself and the other (two officials) that it was not included in the game." The NBA said it would undertake an inquiry into the situation on whether the ruling was correct.

The STAPLES center was in hysterics as Bryant threw himself to the floor in vain cursing at the officials. Tomjanovic and the Lakers other players picked up their bench and hurled it onto the court as GM Will Sit jumped out of his courtside seat and flipped the scorers table and equipment upside down. The fans joined in the fray throwing debris at the Heat as they were rushed out of the arena. Both teams declined comment as Sit talked about what he was going to do next. "Don't worry, I will be in charge of the bills to fix everything. I'm rich."

The NBA released a statement today saying they wanted to charge the Lakers orginisation for 'disruptive and unacceptable' behaviour on national television. Jack Nicholson was happy with what happened syaing, "That was what I call great sport. Did you see the passion in the eyes of eveerybody, picking up chairs going after O'neal at the end!"

Shaq indeed recieved the loudest cheer of the night at the start of the game in player introductions. He was honoured saying before the game, "It's great to be back." O'neal posted 30 points on 14-18 FG and 10 rebounds as he was flanked by Wade's 31 points on 14-25 FG and y7 assists. The pair were further supported by third string offensive option Eddie Jones who scored 18 points.

Bryant had help from Brown, Caron Butler; who had 11 and 6 assists and Brian Grant who came off the bench to pull down 14 boards. But Karl Malone's scoreless debut in 10 minutes contributed to the Laker's downfall.

The Heat raced to a 33-21 lead at first quarter time, engineering a 10-2 run at the end of the first period. But Los Angeles striked back and finally took over in the third quarter.

NOTES

G Eddie jones sank a three pointer at halfway at the halftime buzzer... Bryant's averages improved to 35, 8, 8 and 4... F Lamar Odom is reportedly not recovering at the pace once thought he would be recovering at and it seems it is possible his injury is more serious than once thought...

LAKERS LOSE SECOND THRILLER IN THREE DAYS

Phoenix Suns 117 @ Los Angeles Lakers 116

Jan 9, Los Angeles - Hollywood right now is starting to regret sending away it's former co-star of the Lake Show. The Lakers lost their second single digit game in three days, dropping another at home to Pacific Division team Phoenix.

The Lakers vieweed this to be an important game because if they had won, they'd hold a tiebreaker over the Suns if both teams reach identical records by season's end. Something which would aid the struggling team. The Lakers dropped to third in the Pacific as the Suns rose to second. Los Angeles meets division leader Sacramento in three weeks.

"It was hard losing another game. And we didn't even get a shot up at the end," Kobe Bryant said. Bryant led Los Angeles with 35 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds but had his first 'off-night' in ages. "Kobe's been playing so well- you forget he's capable of playing bad," teammate Caron Butler said, "But we really needed him to play well and he didn't deliver."

Bryant played horrible for two and a half quarters and was subsequently benched. He came out at the end to lead a fast paced comeback, tallying 16 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists to bring the Lakers into contention. But it wasn't enough as Steve Nash had the last laugh burying a three pointer to put the Suns ahead by 1 with 10.3 left. The lakers failed to put a shot up despite taking two timeouts to set up two seperate plays which both failed.

However, it wasn't all too bad for Los Angeles as they witnessed the re-emergence of Kwame Brown. After playing decent games so far, Brown had his best with 35 points and 15 rebounds, showing the STAPLES crowd Shaq's replacement mayt have arrived for good. "I figured it would be (some) time until I got good enough to rock this crowd," Brown explained. Brown was exceptional down the stretch supporting Bryant with 6 points in the alst two minutes to keep the Lakers in it. Even powering into the paint with 34.5 second remaining to put LA ahead at 116-114.

Steve nash led Phoenix with 35 ponits and 9 assists, Quentin Richardson added 23 points and 9 rebounds and Amare Stoudamire is quickly building up his reputation as the first Sun's big man since Charles Barkley to be able to rock the post night in and night out. He posted 20 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks in just 24 minutes, all on a crook stomach.

"It (stomach) wasn't feeling too good. But I didn't want to give up," Amare said.

NOTES

C Chris Mihm and F Lamar Odom have both been advised to sit out another 3 days due to sore backs... Malone's second game saw him score his debut basket for 2004-05 with 4:23 left in the second quarter, he had 6 points and 3 rebounds in 10 minutes...

GENERAL MANAGER FRUSTRATED AS LAKERS LOSE ANOTHER

Los Angeles Lakers 87 @ New Jersey Nets 89

Jan 20, New Jersey – GM Will Sit is growing more frustrated with his team’s inconsistency by the minute as his team was again narrowly defeated by the lowly New Jersey Nets and are now on the verge of collapsing. The team is in low morale and will face their biggest test as they race towards trying to steal a playoff berth and face Division leaders Sacramento next Sunday.

“We (Lakers) need to beat the kings. It could turn this season around. We’ve lost three in a row and we can’t keep going like this,” Sit said, “I have guessed that we have to win at least seven of our last ten games to get that eighth playoff spot in the West. And that relies on other teams’ fortunes.”

Along the road, the Lakers will meet a few good teams which include the 12-4 Kings, 10-5 Wizards and 15-4 Timberwolves. Along the way they will also meet team who do pose a threat who are the 7-7 Nuggets, 8-7 Knicks and 11-10 Magic. “This is crucial because we failed to do well in that five, six game stretch early this month. We need to redeem ourselves,” Rudy Tomajanovic said.

The Lakers need as much help as they can get from its team. If last night’s game is any indication, LA is in some trouble as Lamar Odom returned from injury to miss all 12 of his shot attempts. Bryant had a horrible first half to only score 6 at halftime while Chris Mihm and bench players didn’t step up in times of need.

The game started slow with both teams shooting horribly from the field as the Nets took advantage of the Lakers’ lack of form on court. The Nets stole the lead and held onto it through the third period. As the game was drawing to a close, the Nets seemed to be heading towards a blow out win with a 16 point margin with 5:43 left in the game. After a timeout where Rudy T shouted at his players, Bryant and Brown stepped up as Kobe had a great individual performance. Bryant scored 21 fourth quarter points, including an individual 16 point run and the Lakers chased the Nets as they closed the gap to 87-89 with 34.5 seconds left on a Kwame Brown dunk. But once again, the Lakers couldn’t win the game as Brian Grant’s lay up rolled in then out.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 40 points and Kwame Brown fuelled hype from beat writers with 24 points and 10 rebounds. “It was a huge game from both of them and it was bad to lose,” Brian Grant said who had 8 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in 24 minutes off the bench.

Jason Kidd who has single-handedly turned around his team’s season and has them at 7-10 scored 22 points with shots that kept LA at bay. Alonzo Mourning was the team’s anchor with 15 and 8 while Richard Jefferson had 17, 6 and 5. “Kidd is the true League MVP,” Mourning stated about his team-mate, “He makes our whole team better.”

LOS ANGELES LAKER REPORT: ROAD TO PLAYOFFS 2005

Jan 22

The Lakers are half a season deep without Shaquille O’neal. So far they are doing ok, after all- the fortunes of the team were very unpredictable as they mainly got two similar previews. A) The would struggle without Shaq Daddy and B) They would just slip into the playoffs. Both scenarios sort of co-exist as the Lakers are 8-11 with 10 games left but have endured inconsistency expecially of recent timing where they won three straight then lost three in a row.

The Lakers loss of O’neal meant a huge gap formed in the paint but the arrival of Kwame Brown has softened the loss. Kobe Bryant is playing a fine statistical season but his team mates aren’t stepping up and now the Lakers face a daunting task of winning at least 7 of their last 10 games to reach the post season.

With the whole squad healthy and ready to go, will the Lakers triumph or will they crumble to the pressure. Here is a look at all the games they will play and how they can win them.

@ 12-4 Sacramento Kings (Jan 23)

Synopsis: The Lakers meet Pacific Division rivals in a crucial game as the Lakers are 0-2 in the Pacific Division. In a rivalry that Chris Webber has pronounced ‘dead,’ the Lakers have more than reaching the playoffs to prove to the Kings. The only way for the Lakers to win is to play their own game- outscoring the opposition because right now, their defence is not working at all.

Key Matchup: G Kobe Bryant and PG Mike Bibby – There is no doubt that leading MVP candidate Kobe Bryant will be matched up against Mike Bibby. The 6’1” guard is averaging a team high 20.8 ppg and dishing out 6.8 dimes a game plus 2.25 spg- good for 6th in the NBA. Bibby is dangerous form all over the floor, shooting a 47% from the field, 42% from downtown and 80% from the charity stripe.

7-7 Denver Nuggets (Jan 29)

Synopsis: The Nuggets visit the STAPLES centre and are deadly enough to cause the Lakers to need to play cautiously. A young team who have another well-rounded starting five, the Nuggets boast MVP candidate Kenyon Martin (19.4 ppg, 12.4 rpg, 1.93 spg, 1.64 bpg) and second year player Carmelo Anthony (21.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.6 apg, 2.29 spg, 1.43 bpg). The Lakers need to disrupt the Nugget’s running game and force to to play half court sets and when the Lakers can do that, they may be able to easily outplay them.

Key Matchup: PF Karl Malone and PF Kenyon Martin – Despite ill health and his recent return, Malone is going to be relied on to use his experience and ‘tackle’ the problem of Kenyon Martin. Martin can score and dominate the glass with ease and it all depends on whther the Mailman has any tricks up his sleeve to stop him.

10-5 Washington Wizards (Feb 3)

Synopsis: Devean Geroge will return home to play against the team he won three rings with. The Augsburg product has started all 8 of his Wizards games after being traded due to an ankle injury and is averaging 16 ppg and 6 rpg for his new team. Both the Lakers and Wizards have had average records since the trade, the Lake Show going 5-5 and Wizards going 4-4. The Lakers need to put as much pressure on Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison as possible to be bale to win this one.

Key Matchup: F Lamar Odom and F Antawn Jamison – All-star Antawn Jamison has been the catalyst for this young team (Not disrespecting Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes) and he is averaging a healthy 21.7 ppg and 10.5 rpg. Even though Jamison plays most of his minutes at PF and Lamar at SF, expect Rudy T to move Lamar into PF foor this game.

5-11 New Orleans Hornets (Feb 10)

Synopsis: The Hornets visit Baron Davis’ hometown in the Lakers’ final ball game before All-star weekend. New Orleans’ debut season in the West isn’t proving to be enjoyable and Kobe and his Lakers will hope they can dampen Baron’s dreams while brightening their own in what could ultimately be a Lakers blowout victory. The key to victory is taking the early lead and keeping the Hornets at bay.

Key Matchup: G Kobe Bryant and G Baron Davis – Davis, a Los Angeles boy will take it up against fellow All-star Kobe Bryant. 20.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 6.5 apg and 2.13 spg are good enough averages to keep Baron in the guard’s elite for this season even if his team comes third or fourth last this year.

6-12 Golden State Warriors (Feb 21)

Synopsis: The night after the All-star game- the Lakers are lucky they’re playing the Warriors at home. Let’s all cross our fingers that Kobe won’t be too emotional about a most definitely non-encouraging Denver crowd who will boo and taunt him all night in Colorado, where he was on trial for rape last Summer. The Warrior’s young duo in J Rich (21 ppg and 6 rpg) and Mike Dunleavy (20 ppg and 9 rpg) will be the only thing that worries Los Angeles. The good news is that both players combine to shoot 40% from the field.

Key Matchup: G Caron Butler and G Jason Richardson – Caron Butler will play against Jason Richardson and even though Butler isn’t having a great season in itself, his ability to stop Richardson should affect the outcome of the game.

6-8 Atlanta Hawks (Feb 26)

Synopsis: It’s surprising that such a bad team is still hanging in there. Thanks to no other player than Antoine Walker. Walker and fellow frontcourt mate Al Harrington will be running all night and it is up to LA to keep up with them. Both player’s versatility has them all over the floor during the entire game and they’re versatility also means no slacking off on defence for Los Angeles. The key to winning this game is for the Lakers’ big men to follow Walker’s and Harrington’s every move.

Key Matchup: F Lamar Odom and F Antoine Walker – Walker and Harrington create matchup problems but one thing that is for sure is that Lamar will be thew guy with the task of guarding the equally versatile Walker. Both players are great all-around talents; whoever wins this matchup will lead their team to victory.

@ 5-7 Charlotte Bobcats (Mar 23)

Synopsis: The Lakers play their first away game after five straight home games after a one month rest. The expansion team Bobcats signed Keon Clark who has recently given them another option on offence. The frontcourt combination of Clark (11 ppg, 8.5 rpg), Emeka Okafor (15 ppg, 12.5 rpg) and Gerald Wallace (13 ppg, 10 rpg, 1.8 spg) are good for their age but won’t be good enough to just yet to beat Los Angeles. But no one’s ruling out an upset.

Key Matchup: G Kobe Bryant and G Steve Smith – Even though the Bobcats Vet is old, none is saying he still can’t ball. Leading his team with 17 ppg doesn’t hit you in the side of the face when you read it. But wait till you see how efficiently he does it. 50% form the field, 45% from three point land and 99% from the line. Y’all heard.

8-7 New York Knicks (Mar 29)

Synopsis: Gotham City needs a hero. Could it be Allan Houston? The Knicks can score, there is no doubt about it. But when they need a game winner, noone ever stands out. Allan Houston has been out all season and the Knicks are hoping he will ‘wake up’ soon to lead them back into an already disappointing season. Think about it, why couldn’t they win these games? 92-89 against Phoenix, 96-93 against Portland and 95-92 against New Jersey. What’s more? All of them were at home! The Lakers need to stop the backcourt duo of Jamal Crawford (19 ppg and 5 apg) and Stephon Marbury (20 ppg, 7.5 apg, 5 rpg, 2 spg).

Key Matchup: F Lamar Odom and F Tim Thomas – Tim Thomas is having a better season than last boosting his averages up to 18 and 8 a game. He can score form all over the court and Odom will need to stop him. Odom is up for the challenge which might not even occur because Tomas is only shooting a shocking 38% form the field.

@ 11-10 Orlando Magic (Apr 6)

Synopsis: Grant Hill is having a fairy tale return as he is fast becoming the feel good story of this season. Hill’s return to the game after four seasons on a shattered ankle has him leading all Eastern Conference Forwards in All-star voting and is an MVP candidate for reasons other than his average looking stats. His work ethic and leadership have really kept his game in shape while the Magic are improving game by game. In order for Los Angeles to win, they will need to battle Orlando’s always evident spirit.

Key Matchup: G Kobe Bryant and G Steve Francis – Former All-star backcourt partners, both players went their separate ways as both parted their big men for this season. When Kobe left Shaq (Or as we should put it, Shaq left Kobe) everyone was sort of happy but when Francis left Yao everyone was slightly disappointed. In a new environment, Franchise is struggling with 15.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 5.8 apg and 1.86 apg on 36% shooting from the field. He’s lucky that Cat and Hill have his back.

@ 15-4 Minnesota Timberwolves (Apr 18)

Synopsis: Depending on how the last nine games went down, this last game of the season could mean elimination or acceptance into the playoffs. If that were the case, the Lakers sure hope the Timberwolves forfeit on the night of the game. The NBA’s best team boasts an energetic backcourt of Sam ‘I Am’ Cassell (17 ppg, 8 apg), Latrell Sprewell (21.4 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) and Wally Szczerbiak (23 ppg, 6 rpg). They also have KG.

Key Matchup: G Kobe Bryant and F Kevin Garnett – Sure, they don’t play the same position but they are the two best NBA players right now. Garnett’s 20.8 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.68 spg and 1.79 bpg may not be as high as Bryant’s own crazy numbers but he dominates and thrives in big games like this one might certainly be.

Agreed, it was eerily similar. Personally, I enjoyed the addition of the riot; I've seen that pop up in a couple of Dynasty threads now. :)

Good luck in the final stretch Sit, I'm sure you'll be able to finish strong. How far are you behind the eighth seed in the West?

LAKERS STORM PAST KINGS

Los Angeles Lakers 117 @ Sacramento Kings 102

Jan 24, Sacramento – Arco Arena is home to many of the Lakers and Kings most memorable playoffs moments. When Shaq left Los Angeles, Chris Webber said the rivalry between the two teams was dead and when the Lakers played Sacramento at home, the Kings seemed to be the ones who had died.

Webber scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 34 foul plagued minutes as he watched his teammates pick up the slack with All-stars Brad Miller getting 28 and 10 and Peja Stojakavic scoring 29. But the efforts of the three wasn’t enough to overcome Los Angeles’ balanced attack and surely couldn’t topple Kareem Rush’s 10 straight points in the fourth quarter.

Kareem Rush scored 17 points from off the bench. The third year player who is mostly known for his heroics against Minnestota in last year’s playoffs scored a three pointer with 4:56 left in the game. On the following possession, Rush scored another three pointer and then stole the ball off an inbounds and was fouled on his turn around three which swished in and completed a four point play. This concluded his personal 10 straight points which was part of a Lakers 15-0 run against Sacramento as they pulled away quickly thanks to Rush.

“Rush tonight was pure brilliance,” Rudy Tomajanovic said, “I’ve never seen many runs like that and it sure is comparable to Reggie Miller’s moments but obviously he hasn’t gotten to that level just yet. He needs a few more years in him.”

Karl Malone who had come off his first three games of the season shooting a combined 20% from the field had his breakout moment with 20 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists on 10-15 shooting. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 21 points despite shooting 9-21 from the field but backed up his outing with 12 assists and 4 steals. The two led six Lakers scoring in double figures as the lake Show had their best outing in weeks.

“The last time we played like a team like we did tonight was very long ago. Maybe since opening night against Philly,” Lamar Odom said, “It’s a shame for me though that I didn’t play so well but my team mates backed me up on that note.” Odom only scored 5 points on 2-7 shooting.

The Lakers received 16 points and 11 rebounds from Brian Grant, 13 points from Juan Dixon and 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists from Kwame Brown. The team had a total of 36 assists compared to the Kings’ 13.

“The Lakers played a better team game and let their offence flow. Compared to us who tried to dribble the ball too many times,” Chris Webber said, “We should have beaten them without Shaq on their side but Karl Malone really filled in, not necessarily as Shaq would play his position but in many ways enough to beat us,”

Vlade Divac who made his home return to Sacramento, his team of many years before leaving the Kings for the team that drafted him many years ago. “It shows how old I am. I left when Kobe Bryant joined the Lakers. Now I’m back and he’s been with them for 8 years.”

NOTES

Karl Malone’s game was his best for a long time and the first time he has played a meaningful role for the Lakers since the Playoffs in 2004… C Brad Miller is leading the Western Conference centres in All-star voting; surprisingly he is beating Chinese and Rockets Centre Yao Ming… The Lakers record is currently 9-11 as they broke Sacramento’s 7 game winning streak…

KWAME, KOBE, KARL LEAD LAKERS TO THOMPING

Denver Nuggets 88 @ Los Angeles Lakers 107

Jan 30, Los Angeles – When the Lakers needed an inside presence most, the Mailman is there to deliver. But what are you going to do when Karl Malone starts to slow down and falter? Kwame Brown stepped up the ante to pull the Lakers in front even more when Malone started to struggle. The STAPLES centre watched Brown turn into a monster.

Karl Malone was a huge reason why the Lakers held a 35-19 score line at the end of the first quarter. Malone scored 10 of his 13 points in the first quarter but remained scoreless for the whole second half. However, his clever play on defence and rebounding helped limit Kenyon Martin to 33 minutes because of foul trouble. Malone’s contribution inside on defence also forced Marcus Camby to give up the ball most of the time and backup big man Nene not to attempt a shot.

Kwame Brown scored 22 points on 11-17 shooting and grabbed 20 boards to lead the Lakers’ assault on the glass. Malone grabbed 9 rebounds while Brian Grant had notched up 11 of his own. Kobe Bryant was magnificent once again, playing a perfect game scoring 29 points on 11-19 shooting and handed out 10 assists. Juan Dixon was the surprise package and spark plug for the Lakers scoring 19 points on 8-11 shooting and adding 5 steals in 24 minutes of action.

“Nights like these are when we play (our) best. When we’re motivated to beat the other team, that’s when we decimate the opponent,” Coach Rudy Tomjanovic said. Bryant who started at point guard for the second game in a row abused 5’5” opponent Earl Boykins into a horrible night as Tomjanovic laughed at the memory of viewing a match up between Muggsy Bogues and Michael Jordan. “The image is just uncanny, it just popped up in my head when I saw them playing.”

The Lakers had no answer for Andre Miller as the guard powered his way to 24 points on a spectacular shooting display. Boykins and Martin scored 15 points apiece and Carmelo Anthony scored 11 points on a despicable 5-20 shooting. No one else made any significant contribution as the three players mentioned above struggled with fouls and poor shooting.

“We all got shut down tonight by a team who are scrambling to make the playoffs. The Lakers this season remind us of ourselves from last, maybe they will make it like we did,” Carmelo Anthony said; who reminisced of his team’s effort of beating out the Utah Jazz and Portland Trailblazers for the eighth seed in the playoffs late last season.

The Lakers stormed to victory late at the end of the game as they controlled the tempo to score all of the last 10 points of the game. Bryant had 6 of them. But Bryant had a string of plays in the first quarter which really had the house standing and cheering.

Bryant got a piece of Boykin’s missed three pointer and sped down court to convert a reverse dunk. He then rebounded the ball on the defensive end and passed it up court to Caron Butler. He then came off a screen from Malone caught the ball and scored the mid range jumper. The following play saw Anthony miss from the baseline and Bryant receiving the ball on the run. He dribbled inside and then dished to an open Mailman for the easy bucket. As if it wasn’t enough, Bryant finished his personal highlight session with an alley-oop. Juan Dixon connected Bryant with the perfect pass as Bryant caught it and slammed it home.

“That was sick,” Snoop Dogg said who was sitting courtside, “A great play and finish.”

The Lakers’ win moved them up to 8th place in the Western Conference with 8 games left in the season. “This is where we want to be headed. It is perfect- the team needs to keep their play up and not before long we might be headed to the postseason!” GM Will Sit said.

NOTES

F Devean George returns home in the next game with his Wizards who are 11-6… F Lamar Odom’s struggle to return to good form isn’t affecting his team but is affecting him mentally, the 6’10” player has been reportedly visiting psychiatrists recently… A group who have named themselves, ‘The Haters’ have commenced on a ‘mission’ to make the Lakers lose. Recently the group claimed responsibility for using voodoo dolls in an attempt to hurt the players…

NBA Roundup - January

Feb 1
NBA.com

All-Star Weekend Report

- The NBA has announced that Rap/Hip Hop group ‘OutKast’ has been invited to join in the All-star festivities in Colorado. The duo which goes by their alter egos of ‘Andre 3000’ and ‘Big Boi’ will perform during half time for the All-Star game on the Sunday. R ‘&’ B sensations Usher and Alicia Keys will perform at the Friday event of the Rookie vs. Sophomore game. The League is currently looking for someone to sing the national anthem before the All-star game. It is reported that William Hung is at the top of that list.

- The Denver Nuggets have reported to the League that it has taken all precautionary measures and is heavily equipped with staff and equipment to be able to combat any threat of terrorism. A Nuggets’ spokesperson said, “We (Denver Nuggets) have and will be able to protect all patrons from any threat of an attack, brawl and also are able to protect Kobe Bryant from any abuse which may occur.”

- It is reported that the Rising Stars Slam Dunk competition has been changed this year so that it will include players who have competed in it before.

- The NBA has announced that 40% of earnings during All-star weekend from all NBA merchandise sold will be donated to the Tsunami cause in Asia. David Stern yesterday announced, “As a league which captivates a lot of global attention, we can’t stand and watch such a large number of nations rebuilding with limited aid. We’ve come to the decision that we want to support them in any way possible.”

ALL-STAR GAME

As the All-star voting is about to close in two weeks, the race to grab a starting spot in the premiere February game is therefore finishing.

Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett is currently leading all NBA players and forwards in voting with 1, 534, 424 votes. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is leading all guards in the NBA with 1, 479, 472 and Miami centre Shaquille O’neal leads all centres with 1, 368, 931 votes.

Kevin Garnett is joined by Mike Dunleavy Jr. (1, 238, 756) of the Golden Sate Warriors being atop the Western Conference voting list for their position. The forwards with the next most amounts of votes are Clippers forward Elton Brand (1, 143, 722) and Spurs forward Tim Duncan (1, 022, 894). The Eastern Conference forwards receiving the most votes are Magic Forward Grant Hill (1, 321, 665) and Hawks Forward Antoine Walker (1, 252, 148), followed by Pacers team mates Ron Artest (1, 111, 825) and Jermaine O’neal (1, 108, 771).

Kobe Bryant looks like he will be joined by Sonics Guard Ray Allen (1, 001, 678) but it looks like a tight race as Potland’s Damon Stoudamire (1, 000, 993) has had a sudden influx of votes and Hornet Baron Davis (994, 824) also has a very slight chance to take over the starting position. Steve Francis (1, 398, 772) of the Orlando Magic may have switched conferences but his fan pulling power is immense as he leads all Eastern guards. Allen Iverson (1, 178, 992) is coming second while Lebron James (1,143, 682) and surprisingly Cuttino Mobley (1, 136, 992) are close behind.

As Shaq is the unanimous choice in the East, Ben Wallace (702, 002) is the next closest player to him. In the West, Yao Ming and Brad Miller are in a tight battle as the 7’7” Rockets center has 1,006, 724 while Miller sits on 1, 005, 294.

January Players of the Month

Image

Jason Kidd led his Nets to a 6-4 record over the month of January including a 4 game winning streak. The veteran has surprised most NBA watchers with his much improved jump shot in his return from surgery. The Nets have returned in the running for a Playoff berth thanks to Kidd. He averaged 24.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 7.7 apg and 1.8 spg for January.

His award winning month included unbelievable clutch performances in many games. Including a game clinching steal in an 89-85 win over the Houston Rockets, scored important jump shots to keep the Lakers at bay in an 89-87 win, scored a clutch three pointer with 2.1 seconds against Sacramento in a 110-105 win over the Kings and had the game winning assist against the Seattle Supersonics in n 79-78 triumph. Alonzo Mourning was quoted as saying, “Kidd is the true League MVP. He makes our whole team better.”

Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers repeated his December performance with another amazing month as the Lakers are in the race for a playoff spot. With injuries to important role players Chris Mihm and Lamar Odom, Bryant was left to lead his team with less help. His scoring dipped from December (38.4 to 35.9) but he has played a more unselfish style of basketball which shows in his assists count going up (8.4 to 9.0). Bryant’s Lakers re-entered the playoff hunt with his contributions in the form of 35.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 9.0 apg and 3.5 spg over January. Bryant had huge performances in many games including a triple double of 43 points (17-22 FG, 9-12 FT), 13 rebounds and 10 assists against the Detroit Pistons earlier in the month.

“Kobe has elevated this team so much higher with his game. Kudos to him for involving everyone on the team,” Coach Rudy Tomjanovic congratulated him.

Other Candidates: Elton Brand, LAC Andrei Kirilenko, UTH Kevin Garnett, MIN Antoine Walker, ATL Grant Hill, ORL Cuttino Mobley, ORL Kwame Brown, LAL Damon Stoudamire, POR Mike Bibby, SAC Tim Duncan, SA Ray Allen, SEA Kirk Hinrich, CHI LeBron James, CLE Ron Artest, IND Michael Redd, MIL

GotMilk? Rookies of the Month

Bobcats’ big man Emeka Okafor finally won the award beat writers tipped him to win every month. After a month which saw him average less points and rebounds than his season averages thanks to the arrival of Keon Clark, the 6’11” UConn product still had what it took to be consistent enough to keep his head up despite an ongoing 6 game losing streak. When I first got here, I knew we were going to (lose)… I’ve learnt how to deal with it because the franchise owners will get it right in two or three years.” Devin Harris won the rookie of the month award for the third month in a row. Even though the rookie had an out of form month with 9.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg and 2.2 apg, the Dallas Starter was able to notch up the honurs again. “I think Devin keeps on winning through his maturity for the game. He deserves the minutes he’s getting,” Dallas assistant Avery Johnson said.

LAKERS RISE TO SEVENTH PLACE

Washington Wizards 83 @ Los Angeles Lakers 97

Feb 4, Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Lakers rose against an injury and comeback to be able to hold the Wizards down from beating them at home and improved to 11-11. Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, 8 rebounds, 11 assists and added 4 steals to lead the Lakers to victory.

Antawn Jamison scored 14 points on 7-8 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds. Brendan Haywood added 17 boards as they watched their entire backcourt struggle. Larry Hughes scored 17 and Gilbert Arenas scored 14 but the two added up to shoot 13-44 from the field. Small Forward Devean George failed to pick up the slack against his former team as he shot 6-21 en route to 16 points.

Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said, "Our guys just had a bad night. And Kwame (Brown) beat us at the start while Lamar Odom beat us down the stretch.

Lamar Odom added 16 points, Karl Malone had 10 and 10 while former Wizard Kwame Brown showed what his team was missing with a short lived 16 points and 11 rebounds. Brown left the game with 7:04 left in the third quarter after a dominating display in the first half. He was diagnosed with a bruised shoulder after the game.

"I really wanted to show my team how well I can play when given a bit more leeway," Brown said. Kobe Bryant added, "Kwame Brown has just gotten better and better. As he gets more touches of the ball, he learns a lot more about basketball."

The Lakers came out cold as they went down 11-0 early. Within the first 3 minutes of the game, the Wizards were unstoppable, killing the Lakers zone defence with three straight long range bombs. Los Angeles fought back late, behind a Kwame Brown surge which saw Brown score 12 of the team's 20 first quarter points in the the last 4 minutes of the first period. Bryant was the only other scorer for the Lakers as he scored 8 first quarter points.

The Lakers then used a 10-2 run at the start of the second quarter to build a wide margin. Bryant was the catalyst once again but received contributions from Brown's rebounding and Karl Malone's presecnce down low. The Wizards had no answer for the Lakers as Antawn Jamison took an early seat after picking up his fourth personal with 8:46 left in the first half.

The Lakers came out of the halftime break and extended their lead to 16. Kwame Brown was injured in a collsion with Haywood and the Lakers' fortune started to turn. As Wizards players; former teammates of Brown went to his aid, the Lakers knew that something was wrong. Brown was helped offcourt as he clutched his right arm and recieved a standing ovation and rousing applause from the STAPLES crowd.

The Wizards took advantage of the absence of Kwame to make an attempt of lowering the margin. They manages to get it back down before the break thanks to Jumaine Jones, the other Laker involved in the Kwame Brown trade. Jones sank conscutive three pointers which saw the Laker's once sizeable margin collapse but Los Angeles held on to keep it in double figures.

Bryant who was clearly fatigued was allowed to sit out the first 8 minutes of the fourth quarter. The Wizards then used a 12-4 run to bring the score close. The lakers tried all sorts of solutions to counter the Wizrads aggresive attack but had to hold on and cling onto to the lead. Lamar Odom who only had scored 6 points during the match came out with 5:45 left in the game to try to help his team out but it was ultimately Kobe Bryant who would help rebuild the Lakers' lead as he orchestrated the Lakers offence.

With 2:03 left, the Lakers were up 84-83. Kobe Bryant went clutch as he scored both of his only fourth quarter buckets. With 1:02 left, the Wizards were left to foul Juan Dixon who made both free throws. The Wizards were forced into tough shots as the Lakers closed out the game with Lamar Odom scoring 7 of his 10 fourth quarter points in one personal run. Odom was able to dunk over Jamison and convert the three poiint play with 24.5 seconds left. Bryant then stole the ball and Odom scored a jumper with 6.8 seconds remaining. Then Odom had an unlikely steal at halfcourt and raced downcourt to score a buzzer beating dunk. "I knew I had it in me," Odom said when reffering to himself racing downcourt to beat the clock.

NOTES

The Lakers have won 3 games in a row... The LA Lakers have now risen to the seventh placing in the Western Conference. The are 6.5 games from the top, half a game behind Denver. Phoenix and Memphis are both half a game behind the Lakers in 8th spot and Seattle is 1.0 game behind the Lakers in 9th... Kwame Brown bruised his shoulder but is expected to train with the team in 5 days...

LAKERS TOO HOT - HORNETS CAN’T HANDLE!

New Orleans Hornets 88 @ Los Angeles Lakers 111

Feb 11, Los Angeles – Shaquille O’Neal’s size 22 feet have been replaced by KB. Not Kobe Bryant but by Kwame Brown. Brown had an outrageous outburst of 20 points and 9 rebounds in the second quarter before he finished the night on a tally of 41 points (20-29 FG) and 21 rebounds as the Lakers decimated the Hornets.

“What a night for Kwame,” Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovic said, “His best game in his career so far!” Team captain Kobe Bryant was all praises for Kwame, “The kid (Kwame) has really grown into something. He has always been this good; it was just a matter of confidence.”

Kobe Bryant scored 24 points (8-16 FG, 3-7 3PT, 5-6 FT) and dished out 13 assists and Karl Malone contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists as the Lakers steamrolled past the Hornets in the second half. The Lakers had an NBA season high of 38 team assists and let their passing and free flowing offence do the talking. The team continued their winning streak as their record improved to 11-10; the first time they have been over 50% for the season.

The Hornets came into the game to be able to keep level with the Lakers but struggled as Kwame Brown’s power game in the post slowed them down long enough for Kobe to out gun them in the third quarter. Baron Davis top scored for the Hornets with 31 points but shot 13-29 from the field. David Wesley added 17 and Jamal Magloire had 21 and 8.

The Lakers’ big man tandem of Brian Grant and Kwame Brown both were slapped with early fouls to sit out significant minutes in the first quarter. Both teams kept it close finishing the first quarter tied at 23. Kwame Brown then stepped back on court to lead the team and was instrumental in keeping Los Angeles in the game. Ultimately though, it was Bryant who won the game for the Lakers.

After taking a slight edge over the Hornets, the Lakers fell back a bit as the game’s pace slowed down. Bryant then came out of a timeout to pull his team ahead with pinpoint shooting and an alley-oop to end the decisive scoring run. With 7:03 remaining in the third, Bryant scored a wide open three from two steps outside of the three point arc. As the Hornets failed to score on the follow up play, Bryant was hit with a pass and drove straight into the lane for a lay up. He scored back to back threes on the following two plays and then dunked home an alley-oop with 4:32 left in the third quarter as he finished the 13-0 individual scoring run. The Lakers then took a double digit lead for the second time of the night and remained in front.

“Kobe was hot tonight. It’s the first time he’s scored three three pointers in one game and it’s an achievement because he’s been shooting so badly from behind that arc,” Caron Butler said. Bryant is currently shooting 20% from behind the three point line for the season.
The Lakers’ win changes their record and makes them look better but they dropped to eighth place in the Western Conference because of other team’s results. However, the road to the playoffs look a bit clearer than before as the Lakers have two more games at home and have gone 3 straight in their last three games at home.

Baron Davis was vocal about his team’s performance as the struggling Hornets have failed to find any rhythm all season long. “This is horrible. We came into the season with a goal and at 5-12, this is hardly the way we wanted to go.” PJ Brown who had 8 points and 13 rebounds added, “We need to be more composed. The dream isn’t over yet but we have already lost hope, we can’t do that.”

Kwame Brown’s career night saw one courtside fan doing something strange. Long time Lakers fan Jack Nicholson sat next to Joe Blogg for all of the game. Blogg who had come in a Kobe jersey sat courtside and retreated at half time, returning with a Brown jersey on. He explained his actions, “I knew he would be good one day, and I’ve always had his jersey with me just in case!” Nicholson was disgusted at his courtside neighbour’s actions saying, “Now that’s what I call major band wagoning!”

NOTES

SG Kobe Bryant had his first game of the season without a rebound on his stat sheet… The Lakers enter the All-star break with the announcement that Kobe Bryant has been selected for the Slam Dunk contest… With 6 games left in the season, it seems unlikely the Lakers will drop 3 of them but GM Sit is taking caution, “We know we can beat the Cats, Warriors, Hawks. Minny and Orlando will give us trouble but we’re not too sure about New York.”… The Lakers are considering axing rookie Sasha Vujavic and bringing in a veteran to help in their playoff journey…

NBA announces All-Star Weekend Arrangements

Feb 12, New York – The League announced the starting line ups for the NBA All-star game scheduled for February 19. After counting up the votes, the fans final verdict was arrived at.

Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett, the League’s top vote getter will lead the Western Conference team into the competition flanked by Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant. Garnett is accompanied by forward Mike Dunleavy Jr. of the Golden State Warriors while Damon Stoudamire of the Portland Trail Blazers will start as the other guard for the West. Sacramento's Brad Miller outsed Yao Ming for the centre position with just two votes. Houston has argued that it was too close to call but the League has decided they will let Miller start and yao is guaranteed a bench position.

Magic point guard Steve Francis led all players in the Eastern conference in voting as he earned his starting spot. It was equally amazing as both of his backcourt partners; Cuttino Mobley and forward Grant Hill all were rewarded with starting spots for the Eastern team. Shaquille O’neal will line up as the starting centre while Antoine Walker of the Hawks will start as the other forward.

David Stern released the following statement, “The votes we have received have been counted and this is your outcome. We hope Denver’s all-star weekend will be successful and hope your time there is equally enjoyable.”

The NBA’s panel of coaches and scouts also selected the Rookie and Sophomore squads who will compete on February 17. LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony will lead the Sophomore team against Ben Gordon, Devin Harris and Dwight Howard of the Rookie team.

The starters for the rookies are Rafael Araujo (TOR), Dwight Howard (ORL), Andre Iguodala (PHI), Ben Gordon (CHI) and Devin Harris (DAL). Emeka Okafor (CHA), Luol Deng (CHI), Jameer Nelson (ORL) and Andres Nocino (CHI) will ocme off the bench.

Chris Kaman (LAC), Chris Bosh (TOR), Carmelo Anthony (DEN), LeBron James (CLE) and Kirk Hinrich (CHI) will lead the Sophomores with Luke Ridnour (SEA), Dwyane Wade (MIA), Josh Howard (DAL) and Marquis Daniels (DAL) backing them up from off the pine.

The NBA Dunk Contestants have also been announced. It will see 1997 winner Kobe Bryant square off against Jerry Stackhouse, LeBron James and Michael Pietrus for the crown. Bryant was surprised at his inclusion, “I can see why Pietrus and James are there but not me and Stack.”

The League has also been able to invite William Hung to perform pregame.
