Chapter 19 - Part One

The ball went up and Rocky Akonnor got to it first. He tipped it forward into the hands of Tyson who squared up to face the hoop and waited for his team mates to get into position. He then passed the ball across the court to their point guard Marcus Kemp and cut in, towards the basket. Kemp passed to the cutting Tyson but the ball was stolen by Chara. Chara handed it off to his big man Andy Kloss in front of him and sprinted down to begin the fast break. Kloss passed to Duke shooting guard Fitzy Mercer who dribbled towards half way and threw the ball in front of Chara. Chara picked the ball up on his way to the basket and dunked it for the game’s first points. It was game time!

Sit was on his feet cheering, waving his tie in the air. Flo and Mark looked at him and shook their heads as Sit had told them to act professional. Moses Chara had just scored on a mid range jump shot and Sit booed loudly, ripping off his jacket and jumping up and down.
“Hey Sit,” Flo shouted, “Calm down. You said we have to act professional tonight?”
“Did I?” Sit screamed back.
Mark yelled at him, “Sit down you fool!”
The two tried to grab him before Sit took a step back and walked into the chair in front of him. Sit tumbled backwards and landed in the next row down. He looked like he was out of it.
“Crazy Asian,” Andrew Watson laughed as Flo and Mark looked in horror.

The game was a fast paced affair with Duke quickly staying ahead of their opposition. The game clock showed that there was 15 minutes left in the first half and Duke was already leading 13-7. The Tar Heels called a time out and Roy Williams shouted at his players’ lack of defensive intensity. They were letting Moses Chara walk all over them.
“We must not let these guys get easy buckets,” Williams said, “Ty, I want you to take him. No more lazy defence!”
Tyson nodded and the players put their hands in the middle of the huddle, “Tar Heels!”
At the other bench, Coach K was happy with the start of the game, “Moses, make sure you dump it down low to our big men ok?”
Moses nodded, “Yes coach! Ok guys, we can win this!”
“Duke!”
The players returned to the coach as Roy Williams looked over at Coach K. Williams could see how calm and composed the other man was and wished he could be feeling the same way. If only he had trusted his big men more, he could tell the team to utilise Akonnor’s size more.
“Let’s go Tar Heels!” shouted Kemp who clapped and high fived with his team mates on the court.
The ref blew his whistle and the game started once more. Tyson passed to Kemp at half way who took the ball up to the perimeter. Mercer spotted Akonnor in the paint and passed into him. Akonnor was wide open but opted to pass out to Tyson who put up a jumper. His jumper bricked and the rebound was taken by Chara who immediately put the ball onto the floor and led the fast break. He was lightning quick and found himself in the open court with Fitzy Mercer quickly following him. Chara was just in front of the free throw line when he threw the ball off the backboard. Mercer came flying in and grabbed the ball in mid air and finished off with a windmill jam.
“That was huge!” shouted a Duke senior on the bench as everyone was celebrating the play.
Chara pointed at Mercer and Mercer pointed back before the two set up the full court press. Akonnor took the ball up and inbounded to Kemp who tried to do a flashy crossover to get past Duke’s Mercer. Mercer waited for Kemp to spin before stealing the ball from behind and pushing it ahead. He was at the three point line and threw it up. Chara was in the air and took the ball down for an alley-oop. The Duke bench began waving their towels again and shouting out in joy.
The same senior who had been cheering before was going crazy, “Man, I love it! We’re awesome!”
It wasn’t long before Tyson missed another shot on the other end and Duke came running back down and Chara got another easy lay up.
Chara back pedalled down the court, shrugging his shoulders and yelling to the Duke bench, “It’s too easy!”
With Duke up 19-7 and with 11 minutes left, the game was beginning to get away from North Carolina. Duke went on with their hot streak and after another five minutes, they were up 36-16. With a 20 point lead, the Duke team began to slow down and play their bench. Tyson shook his head during a timeout. His team struggling to keep up and he had done little more than score 3 points on 1 for 7 shooting.
“Ty, get your ass on the court and work it damn it!” Williams shouted at the freshman.
Tyson shook his head again, he felt like he was about to die right there and then. He didn’t want to be playing the game anymore.

There were only a handful of minutes left in the first half. Duke was up 42-25 as Sit returned to his seat with bandages on his head.
“First aid here sucks,” Sit complained, “I had to wait for them to take their time with some dude who stabbed himself with a pencil.”
“Nerds shouldn’t be allowed at games,” Flo said, shaking his head.
Sit looked at the scoreboard and then down at the court, “Damn, UNC’s getting hammered.”
Andrew Watson nodded, “Yes they are. And boss, Moses Chara’s stats are 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.”
Mark was impressed, “Wow, you are a good stat keeper. What about Tyson’s?”
Watson then read from his paper, “7 points, 2 rebounds and 4 turnovers.”
“Ouch,” Flo said, “I think we know who the better of the two is.”
Watson then stated, “I’ve also counted that Tyson has made around 7 mistakes that have led to 16 points.”
Sit nodded, “Good man, keep up the good work!”
“Do I get paid yet?” Watson asked.
Srbija then jabbed him in the back with his taser and Watson yelled in pain, “What was that for?”
Srbija shrugged, “Felt like it.”
Sit looked back at the game as everyone cheered. Tyson had just hit a deep three to beat the shot clock. Then a Duke player scored a three to answer him. The clock was winding down with Duke up 45-28.

“Halftime here at the NCAA final and Duke leads UNC 49-32,” the ESPN sports reporter said on TV, “Moses Chara has had a great night as he’s got 18 points, 6 rebounds while playing great team basketball. His rival Reshawn Tyson is struggling with just 10 points and has already turned the ball over 5 times.”
A lady reporter then began to speak, “And speaking of the pair. The two were involved in an altercation before the game and it has been reported that it was sparked by Tyson who has been aggressive all game.”
Roy Williams switched off the TV set in the locker room and pointed at everyone of his players.
“This is a disgrace! We are being blown out in this game. They’re literally running us off the court!” he shouted.
His players all looked at each other and quietly nodded in agreement.
“Tyson, you’re not playing well so don’t shoot the ball. I want everyone to pass it to Rocky.”
“Who? Me?” the big man asked pointing at himself in confusion.
“Yes, you,” Williams said, “You’re the biggest guy on the court so use that as an advantage.”
“Yes sir,” Akonnor said.
“Come on North Carolina, let’s try and get back into it!”
The Tar Heels trudged back out into the stadium for the second half.

The second half began with the two teams trading basket for basket. Moses Chara was back on the floor and was taunting Tyson.
“Trying to get past me huh?” he trash talked to him as Tyson tried to bring the ball up, “Can’t get past me boy.”
Chara tipped the ball out of Tyson’s hands and dribbled up the court. He was wide open but opted not to take the lay up and dribbled back out to the perimeter. He waited for his team mates to join him before finding an open Kloss for an easy bucket. As Chara went back down court, he bumped into Tyson. Tyson was sent sprawling onto the floor as the North Carolina bench jumped up in protest. The ref shook his head and called for play to continue. Tyson got up and ran at Chara but before he could take another swing at him, Akonnor grabbed a hold of Tyson’s arm. The ref saw Tyson and blew his whistle.
“That’s a technical foul…” he called to the score table.
Tyson shook his head and Roy Williams was fuming on the sideline. Akonnor whispered something into Tyson’s ear as the crowd was getting louder and louder. Chara hit the shot at the charity stripe to put Duke ahead by a little more. The score was 56-41 with 17 minutes left in the game.

“Man, what was that for!” Sit shouted, “These refs suck!”
This time Mark and Flo were the ones on their feet yelling in anger as the ref called the technical on Tyson. The North Carolina fans were in uproar also as they watched Tyson stroll around on the court before Chara’s team was given back possession after making the free throw.
“This is just a horrible game,” Sit said to his companions, “Think we should leave?”
Just as Sit asked everyone in the stadium went silent before the booing continued except this time the booing was louder. Sit looked down at the court and saw someone on the ground clutching his leg.
“What happened?” Sit asked Flo.
Watson answered for him, “Chara looks like he’s down injured.”
“Why the booing?” Sit asked.
“It looked like Rocky Akonnor hit him hard,” Mark replied.

Chara was holding onto his right ankle, clearly in pain. Rocky Akonnor was standing in front of him and then walked off, with his hands in the air. A team doctor ran to treat Chara and called for a stretcher.
“It’s not a sprain. I think something’s broken!” he shouted to the sideline.
Minutes later, a stretcher was brought onto the court and Chara was taken off on it to the applause of the crowd. Duke called a quick timeout before the players got back onto the court. Tyson used his hands to wipe the bottom of his shoes and jumped up and down to try and get back into it. He looked up at the scoreboard to see that there were 16 minutes left.
He thought to himself, It’s only 58-44, we’re still in it!

wow that technical foul part... so real.
i hate it when the refs see something that is definatly not a T, and make it a T, whereas something that should have been called is not.

- Yeh man, refs are always blind! But its good when they call things on you lol... like in my game last friday, i stepped out on my way for a reverse layup and i also took an extra step off my pivot foot before i pump faked and passed to a big man for a basket... both travels went unnoticed... however, ref was stupid to call me palming the ball andf i hadnt been called for that in ages lol in like 4 years lmao stupid refs

Rocky Akonnor didn't get ejected? Also how can Tyson play in the NCAA if he has an agent?

First of all, the refs didn't see it. I was implying how blind they are.

Secondly, Tyson must have hired his agent before the championship game :P That's why Thierry hasn't made an appearance until now. (Y)

Chapter 19 - Part 2

It seemed that Tyson was perfectly correct as the Tar Heels went out on a scoring run behind their big man Rocky Akonnor. The 7’3” monster dominated in the paint as Duke had no answer for him. Akonnor had many great looks in the paint as he dunked the ball three times in a row at one point.
Sit watched on in amazement, “Man, look at how Tyson is playing off the big man!”
Watson agreed, “I’ve counted that in the last 7 minutes, Tyson has registered 6 assists from passing into Akonnor.”
The Tar Heels had indeed caught up behind Rocky exploding for 14 points as they only trailed 61-58 with little more than 9 minutes left. It was back to a close game all over again.
Flo was still a bit shocked with Chara’s exit, “This is stupid.”
Tyson hounded Fitzy Mercer on defence and didn’t let Duke’s second top scorer from getting anywhere near the basket. His effort was paying off as Mercer forced a lot of shots that incidentally missed very badly. The Tar Heel crowd were booming every time their team scored while the Duke fans began to chant for their team to start playing harder.

Tyson held the ball low, his head was cocked watching the shot clock run out. Rocky Akonnor had gotten in position for a pass into the low post. Tyson looked up and thought about shooting. He dribbled to his left before crossing over and spinning to his right. Tyson finished his spin and looked into the paint. His defender was dazed and didn’t know what had happened. Mercer turned around to see Akonnor with the ball; he had fallen for Tyson’s move. Mercer turned back to see that Tyson was gone. Akonnor pump faked and whipped the pass cross court to Tyson who took the open three point shot and made the most of it perfectly. The crowd was even louder as the Tar Heels evened the score and Duke called timeout.

Play resumed with the Blue Devils’ Andy Kloss jamming the ball home and then swatting an Akonnor shot at the other end. Mercer then scored again on the other end and the Duke bench wouldn’t sit down as they took the momentum back in the game. Tyson shook his head as he dribbled back down the court. He passed to an open Kemp who passed it into Akonnor. Akonnor went up and missed an easy shot. Kloss rebounded and passed it down to Duke forward John Doe who layed it up. Tyson this time called a time out and the players retreated to the bench. Tyson threw his towel on the ground and looked like he was about to explode. Coach Williams shouted at his players for missing easy shots before he sent them back on.
Kloss walked passed Akonnor and said to him in a low voice, “Taking a cheap shot before man, you’re going to pay.”
Kloss walked away and Akonnor ignored him as play continued.

The two teams went on a scoring romp as the two teams upped the score to 86-82 in only less than 6 minutes. Duke still led and looked like they wouldn’t falter as they were intent on winning the game for their fallen leader. Tyson had scored 27 points so far in the game and didn’t look like he was going to stop as he scored on a long jumper over Mercer. His lockdown defence was just as impressive as he had kept Mercer to just 2 points in the whole second half. Duke though went on another run as they hit three shots in a row to push ahead to 92-84. There were only 2 minutes left in the game. Tyson and the Tar Heels needed something special. They had no time outs left and now, it was time to stay poised and try to find a way to get back into the game. The game was stopped so that a patch of the court could be swept.

Tyson had his hands on his hips and chewed on his gum which was getting a bit old. Akonnor nodded at his best friend, signalling an isolation play for him. The ref gave the ball to Kemp who passed into Tyson. Tyson went one on one against Mercer. Mercer tried to overplay his man and went too far right. Tyson dribbled in with his left and lifted off the ground for a dunk. He slammed it over a Duke big man and was fouled. He hit the free throw and ran back down the court as the UNC bench jumped onto their feet.
“Come on! We can do it boys!” Tyson shouted out.
Duke dribbled the ball back down the court. Their point guard Matty King passed the ball to Mercer who then passed into Kloss. Kloss pump faked and tried to shoot but was swatted by Akonnor. Tyson gathered up the ball and dribbled quickly. He dished it off to Kemp who went for the three. It was good as the Tar Heels got closer to their rivals. Kemp chest bumped Tyson as the two got ready to play defence. Kemp then forced King into an error and passed the ball to Tyson. Tyson dribbled and stopped at the perimeter. The Tar Heels set up their offence and slowed it down to run down the clock. Tyson then passed to Kemp and cut in. Kemp faked the pass and shot the trey. The crowd went wild as the shot rattled in and Tyson’s team was up by 1 with roughly 40 seconds left.
“Damn right baby!” screamed Tyson as Duke called their final time out.

The next possession was critical and Tyson knew he had to shut down Mercer and King; the Duke backcourt. Mercer had the ball and Tyson went right up to him. Mercer swung it round to King who passed it into Kloss. Kloss passed it back out to King who made a tough shot to put Duke back on top. The Blue Devils set up in a full court press with 18.4 seconds left. It was crunch time and they had to put pressure on the ball carrier. Duke had to hold out for this win. Tyson took the challenge and called for the ball. He got the rock and started going at the defenders. He dribbled with one eye checking the game clock at the same time. It had wound down to 13 seconds as he crossed half way with Mercer sticking on him like glue. He let it run out more as the clock reached the 7 second mark and Coach K was yelling out not to foul.
“You think you’re going to stop me hey?” Tyson taunted Mercer.
Mercer smiled, “You haven’t hit one all night boy.”
Tyson shook his head, “Well, I love to make the big shots count.”
With that, Tyson quickly jumped to take the shot. He was two steps behind the three point line and kept his arm in the air. The ball sailed through the air as the clock kept running. Tyson turned to walk back down the court as the whole stadium went silent. The buzzer sounded.

Then there was a swish. It was another fairy tale ending. Tyson smiled and nodded to the bench before turning to go and shake hands with the losing team.
He smiled after hugging Coach K at the Duke bench and thanking him for the game, “No one can stop me.”
Confetti started to sprinkle from the ceiling as the fans began to cheer loudly. The players and team staff from UNC all ran onto centre court. It was indeed sweet victory.
“Number one!” Akonnor yelled with his arms in the air.
The players ripped their shoes off and threw them into the crowd. Tyson threw one shoe up into the crowd but kept the other one on. Roy Williams was getting ready to go and cut the net off the basket; a tradition for all championship games. Everyone was dancing in the crowd and cheering as the Duke team left the floor. North Carolina stayed on as they did a victory lap of the court as NCAA back to back champions.

The noise was incredible as Sit was trying to hear what Flo and Mark had to say. There wasn’t any doubt that the absence of Moses Chara definitely hurt Duke a lot. The fact that his team lost and let a huge lead slip away without him on the floor made him even more valuable.
“You think Chara is definitely the best player in the draft now?” Sit asked Flo.
Flo shouted, “I think he is. I still say we should draft him! Tyson isn’t ready yet for the NBA. We need someone to fill in as our second star player.”
Mark agreed, “You should find Chara and talk to him. I seriously think we need him on our team.”
The three focused back on the court below as the North Carolina Tar Heels were being announced as NCAA champions for 2006.

* * *

Moses Chara was seated in front of media in the Duke training facility. He was ready to declare his intentions to jump to the NBA. The senior was upset over his team’s loss but took a bigger hit as doctors diagnosed him with a broken ankle.
“I would like to say that I will be going to the NBA and entering the next Draft. I am a bit sad that I couldn’t help Duke to the NCAA title but I do wish Coach K and the team better luck next year,” Chara announced in front of the media, “I would like to also add that I have suffered a broken ankle. Doctors say I should be out for around 4 to 6 weeks so I think will be unable to attend too many team workouts. However, I am still a hundred per cent committed to Team USA.”
People in the room clapped as Chara smiled to them and Coach K took to the mic.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Moses for his play at Duke over the past four years. It is a pleasure to see you move on into the NBA and I’m sure you will be a star for whichever team you land on.”
Everyone clapped again as someone announced it was question time.
“Moses, can you give us your reasons for that pre-game altercation with Reshawn Tyson?” someone asked.
Chara nodded and answered, “In the game, it’s always war. I’m a nice guy off the court but I’m a bad guy on it. If some people can’t take that how can they succeed? Even if we weren’t playing ball and it was in another field where there’s competition, everyone should know that while you’re at work, you need to set aside all friendships.”
“It’s like you guys in the media, maybe you have journalist friends but when it comes to work and you need to beat a certain deadline. I bet none of you would help each other help and it all basically becomes every man for themselves. It’s like that for me in basketball; I can be friends with you after or before the game. During it, it’s war and if he decides that I’m a bad sport for that, then he’s weak,” Chara finished.
Another reporter spoke up, “How do you feel about Rocky Akonnor purposely hitting you?”
“I forgive him. There’s no point in taking grudges or anything,” Chara said, “It’s his loss. Even though his team won, it was a cheap shot and a lot of people will remember that.”

Sit watched Chara speaking on Live TV and flipped stations. His phone rang and he picked up the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hello Mr Sit,” a deep French accent said.
“Thierry?” Sit asked.
“Yes.”
Sit was puzzled, “What is wrong?”
“I would like to discuss my client with you.”
“Yes, I was going to ask you about Ty…”
Thierry stopped him mid sentence, “No, I am representing Moses Chara.”
“What?” Sit asked now getting more confused.
“Put your station onto ESPN!” Thierry ordered.
Sit did it and looked on the screen and said, “Nothing’s interesting on.”
“Wait for it…” Theirry replied.

“We now interrupt you with this new story Live from North Carolina.”
Reshawn Tyson was sitting in front of media for a special press conference and began to speak, “After winning the NCAA tournament, I have decided that it was definitely a great and humbling experience. I know that a few days ago, I said I wanted to declare for the NBA Draft. However, after thinking about it more, I have decided that I will not declare for the NBA and stay at UNC.”

done.

Tyson didn't play well as long as Chara was on the court, he seemed to have a motivation problem, he was in a slump and he nearly didn't contribute at all

as a contrast, Chara was way more competitive, he dominated the game with ease and he seemed to be able to do what he wants

as soon as the incident happened, Tyson completely changed... now it was him who fulfilled Chara's role to some extent. And in the end they even got away with the win...
...BUT with Moses Chara out of the game!

In my opinion, Moses still fits better in our team concept, but my suggestion is that we should try to get both to have a workout session, we can still decide afterwards

but if Ty will stay at UNC our decision will be easy

(that's my input (Y) )
