All-Star Saturday Recap
Tracy McGrady 'Hometown' Hero

Image

Feb 19, Houston TX AP - Houston's Tracy McGgrady edged out Seattle's Ray Allen in the NBA Three Point Shootout.

The shooting contest lasted three rounds with the first round seemingly tedious and lacklustre as Charlotte's Kareem Rush, Warriors' Derek Fisher and Lakers' Kobe Bryant couldn't even reach 15 points, scoring just 9, 11 and 11 respectively.

Sonics' duo Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis got through to the second round relatively easily with Bulls' Kirk Hinrich and Rockets' forward McGrady both narrowly edging out Clippers' Cuttino Mobley.

The second round saw Hinrich and Lewis both bomb out with very low scores of 12 and 10 respectively. Allen scored 17 and McGrady scored 18 before Allen posted a disapointing 14 points in the final round. McGrady clinched the title with 20 points.

"I'm happy with my win tonight," McGrady stated after the contest, "Hopefully, I will come up big in tomorrow's (All-Star) game and help the West win."

However it was not all well in Houston as the contest led David Stern to reconsider whether All-Star Staurday sould be held in the future. "Tonight, the players didn't look very motivated. I think that the NBA will need to think about whether this was worth it."

The Slam Dunk contest was held afterwards and resulted with another dull contest with Orlando's Steve Francis finishing as the winner.

Ming Dynasty Has Just Begun...
Epic Double Overtime All-Star Game - Basketball is Back at it's Best?

Image

WEST: 37 - 28 - 23 - 41 - 36 - 165
SOPH: 31 - 36 - 32 - 30 - 34 - 163

20 Feb, Houston TX AP- West and East put on a great show but it was the giant from the China, Yao Ming, who put on the greatest show of the night. The 7'6" big man dominated as he racked up a quadruple-double to help lead the Western All-Stars. It was Ray Allen though who pushed the West to victory in the end though.

Ming exploded for 26 points, 21 rebounds, 14 assists and 11 blocks when the team needed him most- on the brink of an early collapse. The gentle giant kept the team in the game as his teammates seemed to be cold and played unselfishly in the fourth quarter to help force overtime. Ray Allen was even better as he had two clutch shots to force two overtime periods en route to scoring 16 in overtime.

Yao's feat was the first in NBA All-star history as his performance drew memories of another Houston legend; Hakeem Olajuwan. "Yao played with style tonight and made the game look all too easy," West coach Van Gundy said, "I have to admit that it made me think of Olajuwan when he did it." Only four other players have ever had a quadruple-double in an NBA game and they are; Alvin Robertson, Nate Thurmond, Olajuwan and David Robinson.

"Those players that have done what I did are great players," A modest Yao said, "But I don't think I am at their level and this game doesn't count because it was a fun game."

The West came out gunning behind double digit efforts from Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Wolves' Kevin Garnett. The East hit right back at them in the second quarter as the West seemed to be playing without much enthusiasm. Yao stepped up as he scored 11 straight points in the second quarter to keep his team in the game. The East came out of the halftime break even more motivated as they edged ahead before the final intermission.

It was then in the fourth quarter when the West started to play defence. Their perimeter men shut down everyone but Chauncey Billups who scored 12 points. It didn't affect them as Garnett and Kobe put in 15 and 10 respectively for the final regulation quarter. In a tense finish, the West caught up with just half a minute left before Billups hit a long two to put the East ahead. The West fumbled a chance to tie the game with 6.3 seconds left when Bryant fumbled the ball and let it go out.

Sonics' Ray Allen was immediately called up to take Bryant off and it payed dividends as he quickly stole the ball off of LeBron James and forced overtime with just 2 seconds left with a lay up.

Allen was just beginning to get hot as he scored 16 points in 10 minutes of extra time. He shot 7 for 8 from the field including 2 for 3 from three point range. Paul Pierce tried to match Allen with 15 for the East. It was Allen who had the last laugh as his long three point shot with 7.3 seconds left forced a second overtime period and Pierce missed a game winning shot.

The second overtime saw the two guards battle it out but it dwindled down to Tim Duncan hitting two free throws to put the West ahead and Yao Ming blocking Rasheed Wallace as time expired to preserve a hard-fought Western All-Star win.

The Chicago Bulls had a scare though as Kirk Hinrich got injured during the game but he came back on later on to play.

KG To LaLa Land?

Houston – Kobe Bryant lost Shaquille O'Neal and is turning in his best individual season ever this year with LA on top of the Pacific Division right now. However, Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown won't do and Kobe needs a more consistent teammate. I smell Kevin Garnett fitting into the equation!

The two superstars fed off eachother with Kobe scoring 32 and Garnett notching 23 in the All-Star Game. But it was Yao Ming and Ray Allen who stole the headlines from the two stars. That's why I am writing this story.

Bryant and Garnett looked brilliant playing together. No one would have thought Kobe could share the rock with any big man since Shaq. There were parts of the game in the first and fourth quarters where Kobe and KG were playing so well, that noone could stop the two of them. Imagine the two of them in LA!

Many may think it was a show put on by Kobe though as he tries to repair his image but to me, Kobe's message last night wasn't, 'I'm not a hog if I don't want to be, I can prove you all wrong.' Instead, Kobe's message was, 'Hey Lakers, get me KG so we can win a ring.'

That's because if KG did come into LA, the Lakers would contend for that title right away.

And it's the perfect time to trade for the big man as the Wolves are headed for the lottery and Garnett is getting even more disgruntled with the situation.

Don't think too much about Garnett saying, "I want to stay with the Wolves." He's actually pleading, "Help me God, get me out of here. Maybe you could blow up the Target Center or send Al-Qaeda!"
