ah. well, i just remembered when i played him, he had stats of 2 points, 6 points, and then i shut him out in the last one, and total he grabbed 12 rebounds, 3 assists, while he along gave up 12 turnovers, so... i thought him to be worthless. 8-)

Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:09 am

then keep him ;)
but his contract is too high anyway

Mon Feb 21, 2005 8:32 am

Are you going to sign any other free agents later? Because I can't sign anybody (no salary cap) and I'm only -9.17M.

Mon Feb 21, 2005 11:16 am

i was discuss before about retiring Divac number if he will retire and i said no. Lakers just retire players that really an impact to the team. And i think his level can't be compare to guys like magic, Worthy and Kareem

Well...i would like to see kobe retire to see this jersey retirement..lol..j/k but just imagine if Shaq and kobe did stay... if shaq retires as a laker..hard to believe Lakers wont retire that 34... if that was to happen...somebody go up to Jerry Buss...and slap his ass...

Future, I think it's random with regards to what team picks you....I think it's better that way, more realism....

Micchy_boy wrote:honestly i love how george in this game, and its too hard giving up on player with a rating of 73.

 Here's what I'd do....re-sign the over-paid bench warmer for as cheap as you can get him....then when trading period comes along, trade him in a deal for a PG

Tue Feb 22, 2005 10:08 am

probably sign him and trade him for..bobby jackson or so...or try for carlos arroyo or another 6th man point guard such as..mar jackson if he didnt retire..but hes gonna reitre anyway so that's just wasting money..uh..Darrell Armstrong?

Wed Feb 23, 2005 2:19 am

sorry man i missed the rest of your playoffs, anyway just finished reading them. too bad you didn't made the finals. damn, the mighty spurs particularly tim duncan dominated your team. oh well there's always next year.

i would like to congratulate you for a job well done in your dynasty. it's been very entertaining, keep up the good work and may you capture the crown next year. big ups for you (Y)

i play him as a back-up SG. he create mismatch and there are times he had a streak of making a 3-point shot in a game.

I will...

yeah, they better retire Shaq's 34 or i'l join you in slapping Buss ass!!!

also there's also a discussion about retiring Horry's number. he helped Lakers in Lakers' championship round but again ,i think its not appropriate to level Horry to the Lakers' great ones.

Teams Look for New Coach

WOLVES NEED A NEW VOICE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin McHale shook up the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, firing longtime friend Flip Saunders and taking over the coaching duties for the next of the season.

McHale, the team's vice president of basketball operations, called Saunders on Saturday morning to break the news.

"We talked this morning, and it was very, very hard," McHale said. "We've known each other for a long time, but another early first round exit was really frustrating.

"Maybe a new voice will help. I'm going to do my best to get these guys competing at a higher level."

Saunders, who had the second-longest tenure among NBA coaches, will be reassigned within the organization, the team said.

In more than nine seasons, Saunders was 411-326. He was hired on Dec. 18, 1995, taking over for Bill Blair and helped turn one of the NBA's most lackluster franchises into a legitimate contender. Last season, Saunders became the eighth person in NBA history to have coached his first 700 games with the same organization.

He led the Timberwolves to nine straight postseason appearances, but that included eight first-round exits including last year.

McHale will be the head coach of the Wolves this season but open the possibility to hire a new coach before the season start.

A native of Hibbing, McHale has been with Minnesota since 1993, serving as a special assistant to the coaching staff, broadcast analyst, and assistant general manager before becoming vice president of basketball operations in May 1995.

McHale, the hard-nosed power forward from the Celtics' championship teams of the 1980s, has a no-nonsense attitude and has not hidden his contempt for the lack of effort.

Although he has a strong reputation for working with post players on their offense and taking young players under his wing, including a skinny 19-year-old in 1995 named Kevin Garnett, McHale has long said that being a coach wasn't one of his goals.

"I don't want to be a long-term coach," McHale said. "You have to stop the bleeding somehow and start looking forward to playing better basketball."

HUBIE OUT, MIKE IN

MEMPHIS -- Hubie Brown retired as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday because of health reasons.

"Unexpected health-related issues will not allow me to continue coaching the Memphis Grizzlies," he 71-year-old Brown said in a statement. "This situation was unforeseen and absolutely nonexistent at the beginning of the season."

His health is the problem. He is 71 years old. He is slowing down physically. The rough and tumble world of NBA coaching has worn him down considerably the last few years. While he remains as sharp as ever mentally, his body is tired.

This recent development came 2 weeks after the Grizzlies were eliminated by the Sacramento Kings in 1st round of the playoff.

Grizzlies’ organization already knew this day will come so they already get an immediate replacement.

They will name Mike Fratello as they new head coach in the following days. Fratello and West are discussing only few minor details with the contract.

"FURIOUS" KARL - NEW NUGGETS COACH

DENVER -- The Denver Nuggets fired Coach Jeff Bzdelik and named George Karl head coach, team General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe announced today.

"We felt we needed a change. I want to thank Jeff for all the hard work. He's a big part in turning this around," Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe told the Denver Post. "But we want to build to the next level, and the team wasn't going in the right direction. Sometimes, you can use a change or a new voice."

Bzdelik was a longtime assistant and scout under Pat Riley in Miami and New York before getting his first shot at a head coaching job with the Nuggets in 2002. Though Denver struggled to a 17-65 record in his first season, worst in the league, Bzdelik was credited with turning the Nuggets into a hard-working, defensive-minded team. Last season, he again led the team to the playoff as the no.5 seed only to loss in Game 7 against Dallas Mavericks.

“We are very excited to be adding a coach of George’s stature to our organization,” said Vandeweghe. “He has won everywhere he has been and his track record speaks for itself.

“We also want to commend Jeff for the job he did under difficult circumstances.”

Karl, the 13th winningest coach in NBA history, has compiled a career record of 708-499 (.587) in 16 years as an NBA head coach. He began his NBA head coaching career with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1984-86. He also coached in Golden State (1986-88), Seattle (1991-98) and Milwaukee (1998-03).

FLIP THE KNICKS

NEW YORK -- The 67-year-old Hall of Famer resigned as coach of the salary-cap challenged New York Knicks on Saturday, likely ending a record-setting career that began in 1969 when he was still an All-Star guard with the Seattle SuperSonics.

"This is a difficult decision for me to make at this time because I really wanted to help the New York team get back to being an elite team," Wilkens said in a prepared statement. "But after a lot of consideration, I feel it's the right time for me, the right move and best for all involved."

Wilkens is both the winningest and losingest coach in NBA history, going
1,332-1,155 in 32 seasons with Seattle, Portland, Cleveland, Atlanta, Toronto
and New York. He won his lone NBA title with the Sonics in 1979 and coached the
United States to a gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Knicks president Isiah Thomas, also announced that they trying to get the service of Flip Saunders who was fired by the Wolves early this week. other candidates are Phil Jackson, Nuggets ex-coch Jeff Bzdelikand Isiah Thoams himself.

COACH RUDY STEP DOWN

EL SEGUNDO, Calif -- Before the playoff began, Coach Rudy T already announced that he will resigns after Lakers 2004-05 campaign. He informed that the reasons he’s stepping down was health concerns and the pressures that accompany his position.

Tomjanovich, hired as Laker coach in July, is suffering from symptoms of exhaustion and fatigue, and he has missed the last two games because of a stomach virus, according to Lakers spokesman John Black.

Tomjanovich, 56, is in the first year of a five-year, $30-million contract. The deal includes a clause that allows the Lakers to terminate it at the end of a season if Tomjanovich's performance is affected by health issues. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in March 2003, a condition from which he has recovered fully.

Lakers made a short list of coaches they like to be the next Lakers coach. This list includes name of Phil Jackson, Jerry West, Pat Riley and Isiah Thomas. Few more names were also mention like Jeff Bzdelik, Michael Cooper and Rick Pitino.

LOOK WHO'S BACK

Image
Phil Jackson back as Lakers Head Coach

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers named Phil Jackson their new head coach replacing Rudy T, who resigns due to health reasons Sources said Phil and Lakers agreed in a five-year deal worth $60 million dollars.

This will be a bizarre twist in Lakers drama as we all know the history of Zen Master and Lakers franchise player Kobe Bryant.
Jackson portrayed Bryant as an uncoachable enigma in his tell-all diary that hit bookstores in October. At the same time, Jackson said he wished the best for Bryant and sympathized with the constant scrutiny the young star had faced.

To add to that, Jackson and the Lakers abruptly parted ways in June, with Buss suggesting that Jackson's "triangle" offense had run its course. Jackson guided the Lakers to three championships in five seasons. He won six championships in the 1990s as coach of the Chicago Bulls.
Phil will inherit a team with no dominate big man but have a very young, fast and more talented team.

“I didn’t sign because of the money, I’m here coz I love the challenge,” Coach Phil said.

“I think we can work our difference, I see a lot of changes in Kobe, 1 year of being the leader of this team made him more mature and saw he can lead this team.” Phil added.

In phone interview with Bryant he said he’s very excited to see Phil back in Lakers bench.

“A coach with that kind of caliber are few, I know we have some difference in the past and I admit I made few mistake in the past. I hope we can work things out and I have a very high respect on this guy. I’m looking forward in the pre-season,” Bryant said.

  Wow !! Phil's back !!! It's interesting... it's getting more interesting. I'm ready to know what you'll do during off-season... :D

Wed Feb 23, 2005 6:25 am

Oh no... Phil's back...

Oh well, all you other teams, better start fighting about who comes 2nd in the NBA next season...

He looks q little thinner in that pic, mich. What happened, Luc Longley was feeding him crocodiles down in Australia?

Wed Feb 23, 2005 7:08 am

ooooooooh, this looks really interesting! old phil is back!
nice.

Wed Feb 23, 2005 7:25 am

6 Rookies Show Their Stuff in LA

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 20 -- With NBA Draft just 2 weeks from now, Lakers continues their rookie scouting. They scouted most of the rookies throughout the season and now they will trim that list to 6 players they will bring in their rookie camp.

Lakers hold the three draft picks, 1 on 1st round and 2 on 2nd round. They have 20th draft pick in the 1st round, 31st pick which they got from Charlotte (Rush trade) and the 50th pick in the 2nd round.

For their 20th draft pick, they brought in 3 players, a point guard, a power forward and a center. They think these 3 players will still be available when it’s their turn to pick.

DAY 1 – JOSHUA CARR (aka Donatello/Joshua), 5'10", 220lbs, PG (Projected Top 15 pick)

Image
Carr goe for a lay-up against Atkins.

In the list of point guards in the draft, Guys like Paul, Ritarita and Klitsie will definitely picked in the top 10. Next in line will be Moore, Carr and Yan but decided to bring because they think this guy maybe the most impressive of the 3 and hoping he can help the Lakers in their PG rotation.

Going up against Chucky Atkins, Carr dominated the game and won this 12-9 via a last 2-point shot. The win was impressive but how this guy played the game really bring smile to Lakers management. He out-rebounded Atkins, 19-12 with 6 of them coming from offensive rebounds. He also showed he’s more quick, agile and strong against Lakers starting point guard. Maybe if Lakers can get him, we might even see him starting at the point. The only problem is he is a point guard version of Dennis Rodman, his looks and his personality.

DAY 2 – RUSSEL SANTOS (aka Micchy_boy), 6'10", 225lbs, PF/SG (Projected Top 20 pick)

Image
Santos showed he has a great touch from
downtown.

They brought this guy since its one of the guys they were unable to scout. Remember Scout A.C Green saw this when he was about to go to the airport. Green came back to the Philippines but got no luck in seeing this guy again until he applied in this year draft.

Before the game against Brian Cook, they’ve learned this guy is a long-time Lakers fan. Lakers management were happy to hear that since its better to have guys who like to play for your team than have (big) guy wanting more money for your team.

Santos started the game with a 2-point shot which surprised everyone esp. hi opponent, Cook. In the next possession, Cook buried a 2-point shot, 1 of 3 2-pointer Cook made. Cook won this game 11-9 in a very close and hard-fought game. In this game, Santos showed his 3-point range, quickness for his 6’10 height and good defense. Dribbling and blocking maybe his weakness. Lakers final assessment was: he plays like Brian Cook with more defense. Picking Santos will be a redundant since they already have Cook.

DAY 3 – LEO REYES (aka Seraph), 6'11", 225lbs, C/PF (Projected Top 20 pick)

Image
Reyes made his move downlow against
Grant.

Lakers got a closer look on Leo Reyes, a center/power forward projected to be pick midway in the 1st round. To see what this guy can give to the team Lakers asked Brian Grant to go up against this rookie.

Against Grant, he showed he can be an offensive force down the post. He made 11 out of 14 shots to win this 11-9. Wow that’s 78.6 % from the field. Trailing most of the game, Reyes got most of his point down the stretch, when Grant also catching his breath. This show this guy has good stamina to play long minutes in a game. The only problems are, he’s slow and can’t play facing the basket, and he’s more of a post-to-the-basket player. He can’t make shot 10 feet beyond the basket and also got limited move going to the hoops.

DAY 4 – HAKIM WARRICK, 6'8", 220lbs, SF/PF (Projected Late 1st Round Pick)

Image
Warrick is deeadly mid-range shooter.

Lakers brought this guy to see if Warrick deserve their 31st pick of this draft. Though Lakers already have a logjam in small forward position, they can just let player like Warrick slip through their hand without looking on his potential.

Going up against Jumaine Jones, Warrick somehow struggled early in the game. But as the game goes along, he showed some flashes of brilliance. He also showed he’s deadly in outside shooting and quickness going to the basket. But still that was not enough to overcome Jones great showing and loss the game, 11=7. Also in this game, they saw that he has limited moves going to the basket and sometimes forces things which results in bad shots or turnover. He also committed some silly fouls esp. offensive fouls. But still Lakers management were impressed with what they see in Warrick. He maybe raw but they see this guy will improve esp. with Phil Jackson teaching this guy. Also they might pick this guy and trade it for a veteran player, you just never know.

DAY 5 - ANDREW WATSON (aka The X), 6'2", 225lbs, SG (Projected Late 1st Round)

Image
Watson shook off vujacic with his speed
and dribbling skill.

After Warrick, Lakers invited Andrew Watson to showcase his skills in front of Lakers coaching staff. Watson again was one of players Lakers were unable to scout more since he was a late rookie to announce his draft eligibility. But still he was projected to be drafted in late in the 1st round.

A match-up against 2nd year Sasha Vujacic, Watson showed a lot of promise. He has able to escape Vujacic defense coz of his speed and dribbling skill which resulted some easy lay-ups and dunk. But he showed immaturity down the stretch, committing offensive fouls and forcing some shot, Vujacic took advantage of it for an 11-9 win. Though he lost the game, this guy has the most impressive workout for the Lakers. What really impressed the Lakers staff was he grabbed 17 rebounds.

Sources said that they are set to draft this guy if he will be available in 2nd round. With him on the Lakers roster, he will be a great back-up Bryant.

DAY 6 – SEBASTIAN YORONG, 6'6", 205lbs, PG (Undrafted)

Image
Yorong maybe the biggest steal in this draft.

For their 50th pick, Lakers will like to bring guys like Francisco Garcia, Jarrett Jack and Nate Robinson but find an intriguing player in Sebastian Yorong, projected undrafted but shows excellent potential.

Yorong was fitted against Keyon Dooling. Right from the start, Yorong showed he got the skill to be in the NBA. First he’s a big point guard standing 6’6”. He has a great dribbling skill, a good speed, and high jumping ability which will definitely create mismatches with him playing the point. The only problem was in this game, he showed lots of immaturity, his mid-range shooting is awful and can’t play long minutes. In the end, he lost the game 12-10.

Lakers already committed with this player and will select him at the 50th pick. They also ask Yorong not to accept anymore workout invitation.
