WOLVES NEED A NEW VOICE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin McHale shook up the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday, firing longtime friend Flip Saunders and taking over the coaching duties for the next of the season.
McHale, the team's vice president of basketball operations, called Saunders on Saturday morning to break the news.
"We talked this morning, and it was very, very hard," McHale said. "We've known each other for a long time, but another early first round exit was really frustrating.
"Maybe a new voice will help. I'm going to do my best to get these guys competing at a higher level."
Saunders, who had the second-longest tenure among NBA coaches, will be reassigned within the organization, the team said.
In more than nine seasons, Saunders was 411-326. He was hired on Dec. 18, 1995, taking over for Bill Blair and helped turn one of the NBA's most lackluster franchises into a legitimate contender. Last season, Saunders became the eighth person in NBA history to have coached his first 700 games with the same organization.
He led the Timberwolves to nine straight postseason appearances, but that included eight first-round exits including last year.
McHale will be the head coach of the Wolves this season but open the possibility to hire a new coach before the season start.
A native of Hibbing, McHale has been with Minnesota since 1993, serving as a special assistant to the coaching staff, broadcast analyst, and assistant general manager before becoming vice president of basketball operations in May 1995.
McHale, the hard-nosed power forward from the Celtics' championship teams of the 1980s, has a no-nonsense attitude and has not hidden his contempt for the lack of effort.
Although he has a strong reputation for working with post players on their offense and taking young players under his wing, including a skinny 19-year-old in 1995 named Kevin Garnett, McHale has long said that being a coach wasn't one of his goals.
"I don't want to be a long-term coach," McHale said. "You have to stop the bleeding somehow and start looking forward to playing better basketball."
HUBIE OUT, MIKE IN
MEMPHIS -- Hubie Brown retired as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday because of health reasons.
"Unexpected health-related issues will not allow me to continue coaching the Memphis Grizzlies," he 71-year-old Brown said in a statement. "This situation was unforeseen and absolutely nonexistent at the beginning of the season."
His health is the problem. He is 71 years old. He is slowing down physically. The rough and tumble world of NBA coaching has worn him down considerably the last few years. While he remains as sharp as ever mentally, his body is tired.
This recent development came 2 weeks after the Grizzlies were eliminated by the Sacramento Kings in 1st round of the playoff.
Grizzlies’ organization already knew this day will come so they already get an immediate replacement.
They will name Mike Fratello as they new head coach in the following days. Fratello and West are discussing only few minor details with the contract.
"FURIOUS" KARL - NEW NUGGETS COACH
DENVER -- The Denver Nuggets fired Coach Jeff Bzdelik and named George Karl head coach, team General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe announced today.
"We felt we needed a change. I want to thank Jeff for all the hard work. He's a big part in turning this around," Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe told the Denver Post. "But we want to build to the next level, and the team wasn't going in the right direction. Sometimes, you can use a change or a new voice."
Bzdelik was a longtime assistant and scout under Pat Riley in Miami and New York before getting his first shot at a head coaching job with the Nuggets in 2002. Though Denver struggled to a 17-65 record in his first season, worst in the league, Bzdelik was credited with turning the Nuggets into a hard-working, defensive-minded team. Last season, he again led the team to the playoff as the no.5 seed only to loss in Game 7 against Dallas Mavericks.
“We are very excited to be adding a coach of George’s stature to our organization,” said Vandeweghe. “He has won everywhere he has been and his track record speaks for itself.
“We also want to commend Jeff for the job he did under difficult circumstances.”
Karl, the 13th winningest coach in NBA history, has compiled a career record of 708-499 (.587) in 16 years as an NBA head coach. He began his NBA head coaching career with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1984-86. He also coached in Golden State (1986-88), Seattle (1991-98) and Milwaukee (1998-03).
FLIP THE KNICKS
NEW YORK -- The 67-year-old Hall of Famer resigned as coach of the salary-cap challenged New York Knicks on Saturday, likely ending a record-setting career that began in 1969 when he was still an All-Star guard with the Seattle SuperSonics.
"This is a difficult decision for me to make at this time because I really wanted to help the New York team get back to being an elite team," Wilkens said in a prepared statement. "But after a lot of consideration, I feel it's the right time for me, the right move and best for all involved."
Wilkens is both the winningest and losingest coach in NBA history, going
1,332-1,155 in 32 seasons with Seattle, Portland, Cleveland, Atlanta, Toronto
and New York. He won his lone NBA title with the Sonics in 1979 and coached the
United States to a gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Knicks president Isiah Thomas, also announced that they trying to get the service of Flip Saunders who was fired by the Wolves early this week. other candidates are Phil Jackson, Nuggets ex-coch Jeff Bzdelikand Isiah Thoams himself.
