NBA Draft Lottery

Bulls Win Draft Lottery But Sonics Made A Giant Leap

Image
NBA Deputy Commissioner Russ Granik announced
that Chicago Bulls received the 1st overall draft
selection in this year NBA draft.

SECAUCUS, N.J., July 1 -- The Chicago Bulls, having the 2nd worst record last season snatched the top draft pick from the Charlotte Bobcats. This will be the 2nd time in post-Jordan era that the Bulls will pick first. In 1999, they used their pick on Elton Brand.

Image
Bulls GM John Paxson was happy to
hear they got the no.1 draft pick.

Meanwhile, the Bobcat with a chance of 25 % to get the top pick, lottery balls seem eluded the Bobcats and settled for the 2nd pick. Bobcats will pick second overall for the 2nd straight year. Last year, after getting the 2nd pick in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, they used their 1st ever franchise draft picks in choosing Emeka Okafor. Okafor, in return, led the Bobcats in almost every Bobcats franchise statistical categories and win Rookie of the Year honor.

Image
Sonics GM Rick Sund can't beleive how
lucky they are in this draft lottery.

But the biggest story in this draft lottery was the Seattle Supersonics. Projected to pick at no. 9 and just 1.8% to win the lottery, Sonics made a big lead to no. 3. By getting the 3rd pick, it opens lot of opportunity for the Sonics. They can get the 3rd best of this very talented rookie draft class, or trade it for a veteran player and/or lower draft picks.

With Sonics picking third, it like a domino effect for the remaining teams. Golden State Warriors, 3rd worst team will pick at no. 4 and bumped Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors, Atlanta Hawks, New Jersey Nets and Utah Jazz 1 place down.

This will mark the 5th consecutive years the Golden State Warriors participate in draft lottery while Los Angeles Clippers will be on his 8th straight years.

Toronto Raptors will try to start a new era and picking at no.6 will give them a good player to build around. Atlanta Hawks, picking 7th overall will try to use it to upgrade their frontcourt line-up.

After trading K-Mart last season, New Jersey Nets knew they were a lottery-bound team. Their last lottery pick was in year 2001, drafting Eddie Griffin and trading it for the rights for Richard Jefferson.

Utah Jazz were participating in this lottery in 2nd straight year after 18 successful years with Stockton and Malone.

Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Hornets, Washington Wizards, Portland Trailblazers and Phoenix Suns complete the list of lottery team this year.

Check the pic below for the complete order of how each team will pick on NBA Draft, which will be held in New York City at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, July 24, 2005.

Sun Feb 20, 2005 11:15 am

wow seattle really lucked out. i'm really looking foward to who you are resigned and who gets drafted. and about that trade you were talking about yesterday, sorry that i had to leave so abrupted, but make it if you have not already done so.

Sun Feb 20, 2005 12:38 pm

wow, seattle moved up to #3 in your dynasty as well....that happened to me too....

great draft lottery coverage, I'm getting a bad feeling about how great your off-season will be :o

I see you used that blank space at bottom right of lottery results to add a lottery type board, nice....

oh yeah, sorry 4 any drunken spam last night....although I do believe that you need an upgrade at PG, although maybe some better than Randy Livingston

too bad for the suns, they almost have the same record with memphis, the no.8 seed in the draft. missing the playoff by a glitch.

 you really drank that time.
i try to upgrade both my PG and C position. but in doing that you have to give some players.

Vlade Divac Hangs Up Jersey

Image
Vlade Divac started and ended his career
wearing the purple and gold jersey.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 4 -- Los Angeles Lakers center Vlade Divac, a 16-year NBA veteran, announced his retirement here Saturday.

The decision was not a surprise for Lakers management since Divac was contemplating retirement midway to the season due to various injury. He made the decison after talking to his family.

"I love playing basketball, my heart says to continue playing but my body said the other way. It clearly shows as I become more injury-prone last season," Divac said.

"I'll like to thank the Lakers management for giving me the oppurtunity when they picked me in the draft and for embracing me back last season. Lakers will always have a big part in my life," said Divac with teary eyes.

Divac, a 15-year NBA veteran, began his career with the Lakers when Los Angeles selected him in the first round (26th overall) of the 1989 NBA Draft. In his first seven NBA seasons with the Lakers, Divac averaged 12.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 520 games. In 51 postseason games with Los Angeles, he increased his scoring average to 12.8 points while pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game.

Named to the 1989-90 NBA All-Rookie First Team, Divac helped the Lakers reach the 1991 NBA Finals in his second season and increased his scoring average in each of his first six seasons, recording a career-best 16.0 points per game during the 1994-95 campaign.

Named to the 2001 Western Conference All-Star team as a member of the Sacramento Kings, Divac has led all NBA centers in assists per game in six of the last nine seasons, including a career-best 5.3 assists per game during the 2003-04 season (20th in the NBA).

In addition, Divac is one of only three players in NBA history (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon) to amass 13,000 points (13,364), 9,000 rebounds (9,294), 3,000 assists (3,522) and 1,500 blocked shots (1,630).

A member of the 1988 and 1996 Olympic silver medal-winning Yugoslavian National Teams, the 7'1" center out of Serbia has averaged 11.9 points, 8.3 rebounds 3.1 assists and 1.46 blocks in 1,119 career games

Though Lakers announced they have no plan in retiring Divac jersey, they showed they warm-hearted appreciation in everything Vlade done to the team, offering him a position on Lakers front office or on coaching staff.

Divac, will led some of the finest NBA veteran retiring this season. Karl Malone, another former Lakers payer, also retires as the 2nd player with most points in NBA. Another Future Hall of Famer, Reggie Miller finished his career as one of the best clutch shooter in NBA history.

Below are the list of players retiring this summer:

3 Lakers Try to Get a New Contract

With rookie scouting period about to begin, Lakers will try to evaluate 3 Lakers players with expiring contract. Devean George, Shandon Anderson and Tony Bobbitt all are free agents.

Image

Among the three, Devean George will likely to get a new contract from the Lakers management. George wants a 2-year, 11.94M contract. He started the 2004-05 seasons on injury list but slowly got his game midway in the season. He was a vital part of Lakers bench as a back-up for both Butler and Bryant. If Lakers re-sign him, he will fight for the starting small forward position.

Image

Shandon Anderson, part of the Walton-Dooling trade, showed he can still be a good complimentary player and will like to stay in Lakers uniform. He wants a 1-year, 3.72M contract. But with Lakers having too many small forwards, it will unlikely for him to get a new contract. Contact negotiation between Lakers front office and George will dictate what will happen to Anderson. If George got a new contract, we might see Anderson wearing a new jersey.

Image
Tony Bobbitt was a late addition for the Lakers. Throughout the season, he showed he can be a vital part of the Lakers’ future. But he wants a long but cheap contract, a 7-year, 6.94M contract. Lakers, an organization known for not giving long contract unless your name was “Kobe Bryant”, will try to negotiate a shorter contract. If Lakers successfully signs him, he will help Lakers with his 3-point shooting.

Sun Feb 20, 2005 8:58 pm

Whoa, 6m per year? who does George think he is?

Lots of money for a backup, IMHO....

How are you cap-wise,anyway?

I think you should do a sign-and-trade with George to get a decent PG.

Sun Feb 20, 2005 9:44 pm

yep, I would give Shandon the flick and try to get Bobbit on a 2 year deal or something....

as for George, he is asking a lot for a backup....almost twice as much as my starter

i'm a little gutted....I was hoping to see Vlade Divac's number retired....but then again, Lakers have so many numbers retired that you can't retire everyone's number....

Sun Feb 20, 2005 10:52 pm

i would let george go and persue something else

i also think his too expensive to be a back-up. but lakers already have a 14M back-up in George.
i have 61.13M team salary. way over the cap!!!

i was discuss before about retiring Divac number if he will retire and i said no. Lakers just retire players that really an impact to the team. And i think his level can't be compare to guys like magic, Worthy and Kareem

jxuusa wrote:i would let george go and persue something else

honestly i love how george in this game, and its too hard giving up on player with a rating of 73.
