Let's reflect back on the regular season for a moment...

...from the annals of the 2005 Birdie Project: (info)
Micchy Boy's LA Laker 2004-05 end of season Birdie Breakdown:

Image

It appeared to be Bryant coming strong at season's end! Although, Odom took the first two MVP honors, Bryant edged him out after a long 82 game season with a weighted Birdie score of 24.39. With that, breaks into the Top ten All-Time MVPs at LiveDynasty.com.

'reversible Live Card preview':

Even though this was considered a 'transition' year for the Lakes..:
This Dynasty instance is currently ranked #4 on the 2005 Birdie Board.

Micchy: Congrats on your competative run during the playoffs! Please when it's all said and done(hopefully not for awhile, obviously) PLEASE, send me your Team stat "tstat file"(not pstat but tstat) of your playoff run. I'm putting a different spin for playoff birdies! Let's go Lakers!

Inside the NBA with Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson and Ernie Johnson

Image
Welcome everyone to Inside the NBA Playoffs Semifinal Preview Special. I'm Ernie Johnson along side Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. In a few minutes we will be discussing all the Conference Semifinals match-ups on this year playoffs. So let’s first talk about the Eastern Conference. First match-up features the East No.1 seed and defending champion Detroit Piston vs. No.5 New York Knicks.

Image
The Pistons have a long break after they swept their 1st round opponent Sixers. While the Knicks I think just got lucky battling the shorthanded-Pacers. I don’t think they will get lucky again against the champs. I will say Pistons in 5 games.

Image
I think even if the Pistons encounter some minor injury; they have so many arsenals to win this series. Their team defense gave them the trophy last year and that formula will also put them back to the finals. I also think Pistons will win this series in 5 games.

Image
Yes, maybe the Knicks played the Pacers with Jermaine playing hurt. But if you just look how the Knicks are playing in these playoffs, I think they can compete well against the Pistons. I think it will go down to Game 7 with Pistons winning it. But still giving the Knicks a small chance of winning it.

Image
Charles, you really think Knicks will lucky again and win it? I think they can compete but the Pistons will advance in the Conference finals after 6 games.
Now, lets talk about the other semifinal match in the East, No. 2 Boston Celtics versus 3rd seed Miami Heat.

Image
I think Celtics played well against the Cavs, they match-up pretty well with them but I think they will have a hard time stopping Shaq in this series. So I will give it to the Heat, they gonna win this 4-2.

Image
But the Heat somehow struggled against the Magic. The Celtics, on the hand, have an easy time dispatching the Cavs. If the Heat continues playing like that, I think the Celtics might win this. So for now, I will say Celtics winning it in 7 games.

Image
The Heat will win this series. O’Neal starting to assert himself in this playoffs and I think he will have an easier time against the Celtics. They will win it in 6 games.

Image
I will also go with the Heat in 5 games.
Now lets talk the match-ups in the Western Conference, lets start with top seed Sacramento Kings against no.4 Dallas Mavericks.

Image
this will be an offensive battle right from the start until the end. The kings are coming from a 6-game series against the Memphis. In that series different guys step up for every game for the Kings. The Mavs, on the other hand, were pushed to the limit by the Nuggets. I think this series will be decided in Game 7. The team that will play defense in this series will win this and that will be the Kings.

Image
Yes, the Kings offensive weapon will be too much for the Mavs. But the Kings also played good defense if you compare them to the Mavs. I will also go for the Kings in 6 games.

Image
The Mavs maybe tired coming from 7 grueling games but they have the momentum, winning the last 2 games and coming from an impressive blowout win in Game 7. The Mavs, I think will play great in this series. The Mavs will take this one again in 7 games.

Image
Well, I will go with the team with the best record; Kings will win this in 6 games.
Now last but not the least, the No.2 and tournament favorite San Antonio Spurs battling 7th seed Los angles Lakers.

Image
This will be another great series. I’m not surprised about Lakers upsetting the Wolves. But this will be a tall order for these new Lakers. I will go with the Spurs winning it in 6 games. But again, in my heart I will be rooting for the Lakers.

Image
Yes, Spurs will win this series. I don’t think the Lakers can compete against this mighty Spurs. Lakers will go down in 5 games.

Image
Again, you don’t give respect to this franchise, they already showed they can beat any team, in regular season and in playoffs. They win against the wolves without home-court advantage and I think they can do it again. I will just say Lakers will win it in 6 but if it goes to Game 7, Spurs will get it.

Image
So Charles you said, Lakers in 6 or Spurs in 7, interesting. I think Spurs will in this in 6 games.
Well, that's it for tonight folks. We will see you next time on Inside the NBA. I’m Ernie Johnson along with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. Goodnight.

Dallas
Spurs
Pistons
Heat

The Spurs are a real tough team IMO and better than the Twolves. Good comeback in the 1st round, I hope to see you get to the next round and upset the Spurs. Not because I like the Lakers, but because I want to see more recaps and pics

Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:06 am

ill go with Dallas,lakers,pistons,Celtics 8-)

Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:42 am

Hey Micchy, maybe you should have Sir Charles have a fit during the interview and start yelling and punching people... That would make your dynasty far mor realistic, you know...

Thu Feb 10, 2005 10:41 am

I will stick with Miami beating the Lakers in the finals (Y)

Thu Feb 10, 2005 10:53 am

wow man, i had a feeling you had to do something good in the 1st round. good luck in your next matchup 8-)

Thu Feb 10, 2005 2:18 pm

Yeh I'm with Seraph on this one... Miami in 7

well both Wolves and Spurs somehow played the same offense with both TD and KG not their no.1 option. SG and PG always do the shooting... but i think Spurs plays better defense than Wloves.
thanks, i already played 2 games but wasn't able to do recaps, maybe tomorrow...

well goodluck in your prediction and thanks

If i reach the Finals and my opponent will be Heat, i have millions and millions motivation to win the championship... i rather lose to the bobcats and the Miami :D :D

jxuusa wrote:wow man, i had a feeling you had to do something good in the 1st round. good luck in your next matchup 8-)

yes, the Wolves never give up until the end...
and yeah i will be needed lots of luck to win against the Spurs..

HonorGlow wrote:Yeh I'm with Seraph on this one... Miami in 7

hm...
i wouldn't have picked the pacers anyway, coz i don't like 'em too much... but i like the knicks :)

at least i'm in the top 3 :D

i think they're gonna make it:

Detroit
Miami
Dallas
Los Angeles

btw: i'm now back from a 4-day winter holiday-trip (snowboarding in austria, the small country next to germany ;)), that's why i didn't post anything to the series, on these days

Fri Feb 11, 2005 9:59 am

dunno, stay with what i have so far i guess

Fri Feb 11, 2005 10:57 pm

yep, I'll stay with my original picks to keep my lowly bracket going....

but if I had to just pick for 2nd Rd I'd have to go with:
Dallas over Kings in 7
San Antonio over Lakers in 6 (I thought about picking you but didn't want to jinx you)
Detroit over Knicks in 6
Miami over Celtics in 5

Game 1 Recap: Los Angeles Lakers @ San Antonio Spurs

Image

Perfect Game

Image
Tim Duncan took over in the 4th period
to help the Spurs draw first blood in this
series.

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) –- Tim Duncan played almost a perfect game. He made all his shots from anywhere in the floor, finished with a double-double performance and played good hustle and defense for a win by Spurs.

The 1st quarter was shooting battle between Manu Ginobili and Kobe Bryant. Bryant scored 11 points while Ginobili already had 13 points in the game. But Manu got some help from Bowen and Parker to put the Spurs ahead by 6 after the 1st period.

Lakers started strong and grabbed the lead just 3 minutes gone by in this quarter. The Spurs tied the game at 35-all but a 7-0 run gave the Lakers 7 point lead. Another run this time by the Spurs put them back with 2 points as the 1st half end. Bryant still led his team in scoring while Ginobili was the high man for the Spurs. Odom struggled in the 1st half tallying just 2 points. Lakers led 42-40 at halftime.

Lakers hold to the lead in the 3rd quarter as both teams just traded baskets. This quarter features lots of deadlocks and lead changes. In the end, the game was tied with 1 quarter left to play. Lakers got a great 3rd quarter performance from Odom and Mihm but Bryant was held scoreless in this quarter. Parker paced the Spurs scoring 7 points. the score was 61-61.

Spurs made an 8-0 run to start the 4th quarter. After that, it was all defense for the Spurs. After Lakers cut the deficit to half, the Spurs showed their championship experience, answering every run the Lakers try and they successfully protected their lead throughout the quarter. The game ended, 83-75. Duncan came big in this period scoring 8 of his 17 points in this quarter, mostly in offensive putbacks and follow-up. He made all 8 shots. Bryant also finished with 17 points but held scoreless the entire 2nd half.

With that win, Spurs now lead the series 1-0. Both teams will meet again here at SBC Center for Game 2 of this Western Semifinals series.

looks like you're in for another tough series....although, I think you have to edit your recap as I was like :? until I realised that one of the Wolves recaps was in the middle of the Spurs one

Wolves were able to tie the game at 82-82 and they took the lead from that moment. Lakers now facing a big collapse in what could be the biggest game yet by this young Lakers. With 3 minutes left in the game and wolves still holding a 5 point lead. Lakers were able to make a run and tied the game. both team missed they last shots and this game was going for overtime. Score was 95-95.

Sat Feb 12, 2005 1:04 am

thanks for the correction, i edit it already and also added the other game results...

Sat Feb 12, 2005 4:22 am

I think Manu was the actual problem, not TD. When you score 26 out of 83 , you must have been a key factor...
Anyway, there's still a long way to go in the series...

Game 2 Recap: Los Angeles Lakers @ San Antonio Spurs

Unlikely Heroes

Image
Kobe Bryant, again led his team but
needed some help from his teammates
to even the series.

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) –- Trailing the series, Bryant and Odom try their best to even the series. But they found 2 unlikely heroes, Chucky Atkins and Brian Grant played their best playoffs game so far.

The Spurs looked like they going for the kill right from the start. They made their first 7 shots and raced to an early 6 point lead. But every things changed when Tony Parker and Tim Duncan was called for their 2 fouls. Without Spurs 2 main guys, Lakers slowly cut the Spurs’ lead. They were able to tie the game after the 1st period. Grant dominated his match-up against Duncan and Horry as he already scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Parker had a great 1st quarter, scoring 9 points before he headed to the bench due to foul trouble.

Spurs played great defense in the 2nd quarter. They held the Lakers with only 2 points in 5 minutes of play. That defense resulted to a 17-2 blast for the Spurs. But again, Lakers made a late quarter surge using their opponent strategy, playing good defense. From 46-30 score, Lakers made an 11-0 run to end the quarter. After trailing by 19 points in this quarter, Lakers now only trailed by 5 at halftime.

Lakers continued crawling back in to the game. Back-to-back threes by Atkins and Bryant put the Lakers within 1 point. They even got the chance to take the lead but missed on that chance. After that possession, Spurs again pull away and once again lead by 9 points. At the end of the 3rd period, Spurs led by 8 points. 74-66.

At the start of the final canto, another back-to-back three, this time by Atkins and Odom, put the Lakers within 2 points again. But Spurs held their composure and easily survived that Lakers run. But Lakers showed resiliency as they again try another comeback. This time they were able to tie the game at 79-all. Both teams traded baskets but with momentum now on their side, Lakers took the lead and pull away with 3 minutes left in the game. With Lakers leading by 9 points, Spurs never panicked and slowly cut the Lakers lead. with 150 seconds left and Lakers lead by 2, Odom missed both his free-throws but Grant grabbed the rebound and sealed the Lakers victory.

All Lakers starters scored in double figures with Bryant leading the way with his 24 points production. But Atkins 3-point shooting that helped the Lakers made a comeback and Grant rebounding helped them sealed the win. Grant finished with 17 points and 17 big rebounds to named Player of the Game.

Lakers now even the series at 1 game a piece, and steal the home-court advantage. Game 3 and 4 will be held in Staples Center, in front of their fans.

Game 3 Recap: San Antonio Spurs @ Los Angeles Lakers

Manu To the Rescue

Image
Manu Ginobili made a 3-point play in the
dying seconds of Game 3 to put the Spurs
2-1 in this series.

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) –- Manu Ginobili made a crucial 3-point play to stop the Lakers run in the final minute of the game. Lakers, after trailing by 10 with 2 ½ minutes left, cut the deficit to only 1 point. After a key stop by the Spurs, Ginobili drove to the basket. He made the shot and was foul by Odom for a 3-point play.

Lakers started the game with one thing in mind, to even the series. They took an early lead, 17-11. They also forced the Spurs on 29.6 % shooting in this quarter to score just 17 points. Both Bryant and Grant scored 6 points while Mihm was a force inside gabbing 8 rebounds. Nesterovic paced the Spurs with 6 points. After the 1st quarter, Lakers lead 25-17.

After shooting just 29.6 % in the 1st period, Spurs made 13 of 18 shots for a 72.2 %. With that great shooting and some defense, they managed to cut the Lakers lead down to 2 points at halftime. Barry gave a big lift coming from the bench, scoring 10 points in this quarter. Bryant continued to lead the Lakers while Odom struggles due to foul trouble. Lakers now only led 50-48 at halftime break.

Spurs tied the game at 60-all, just 3 minutes gone by in the 3rd period. Then an 8-2 run by the Spurs put them on top. They hold on to that lead by playing good defense in the remaining of the quarter. Lakers just shot 30 percent compared to 57 % shooting of the Spurs. After 3 quarters, the Spurs now led 74-68.

Spurs extended their lead to 12 points in this final canto. Lakers tried to make a comeback but the closest they can get was 8 points. Then trailing by 9 points with 4 minutes left, Lakers broke the 8-point barrier after Atkins made a 3 point shot. The Spurs got it back to 10 points but the Lakers already have the momentum. They slowly cut the deficit until they just down by 4 points. a 3 point shot by Bryant put them within 1 point. The Spurs missed their next shot and the Lakers have the chance to regain the lead. But Bowen blocked Atkins jumper. With 34 seconds left, Lakers decided to play defense and not to foul. Then Ginobili drove to the basket, fouled by Odom and made the basket for a 3-point play. He made the bonus free-throws to make it a 4 point lead, 99-95. Lakers missed their last shot and the Spurs just dribbled the ball until the buzzer sounds.

Manu Ginobili led the Spurs with his 22 points and was named Player of the Game. Duncan finished with a double-double. Bryant finished with 32 points while Odom, who struggle all game due to foul trouble, scored with 18 points before fouling out.

The Spurs now lead the series 2-1. Lakers will try to even the series when they face each other again here in Staples Center for Game 4.
