Korver Amazing In Win Over Alston

Image

[HOUSTON, Feb. 25] – With several big names coming into the contest, it figured to be a big event. Kyle Korver and Ray Allen were the favorites this year. Korver made it to the finals last year, but lost to Quentin Richardson 19-18. These two are the only ones back from last year, newcomers are the Jazz’s Andrei Kirilenko, Heat’s Jason Williams, the Raptors’ Rafer Alston, Knick’s Jamal Crawford, Philadelphia’s Gordon Giricek, and Golden State’s Mike Dunleavy.

Image Image Image Image

Round 1

Andrei Kirilenko: Being the first to shoot, he probably wasn’t comfortable. On the first rack he missed his 3rd shot to receive a score of 5, but all hopes of continuing that were dashed as he only made one shot on the 2nd frame and 3, 4, 4, on the following frames for a total of 17. With shooters like Allen, Korver, and Giricek, that most likely would not have been enough.
Final Score: 17

Jason Williams: He is a surprise in the shootout because he’s more known for his flashy passing and less for his jumper, but did he prove the critics wrong. Williams was absolutely on fire for the first 2 racks hitting every ball. As for the other 3, he missed all the money balls and therefore lost 6 points for a total of 24.
Final Score: 24

Kyle Korver: Korver had an interesting outing. It looked as though was struggling, after hitting his first 3 shots, he missed the 4th as well as the money ball. He was perfect on the 2nd rack, but missed the middle ball on the straight up shots. He was perfect on the 4th rack and again missed the middle ball in the corner on the last rack, which put him one in front of Williams.
Final Score: 25

Jamal Crawford: The slasher, like Williams, is an oddity in the contest, but he managed to do fairly well. After struggling on the first 2 frames, he went on fire for the rest of the racks, though he did miss the last 2 money balls, which really cost him as he only managed 20 points. Overall he made only 2 money balls, on the 2nd and 3rd racks.
Final Score: 20

Mike Dunleavy: The sharpshooter from Golden State came in looking to do some damage and prove to the NBA that he isn’t just another soft white kid from Duke who can only shoot straight up jumpers… however he didn’t even managed to be able to do that today. The Good: Dunleavy made all of his money balls. The Bad: he missed every other shot, and thus only scored 10 points and will definitely be eliminated.
Final Score: 10

Ray Allen: One of the favorites, and Allen did not disappoint. He looked like he was going for the perfect 30 as he cruised through the first 2 racks, but on the last 3 racks he missed all the money balls and took a tie for 2nd with Williams behind Korver.
Final Score: 24

Rafer Alston: Just like another Williams, people didn’t expect Alston to do well, but were they wrong. Alston made every normal shot, and added an money ball for insurance into the next round.
Final Score: 22

Gordon Giricek: A disappointment because he was expected to shoot the lights out after what he did at Utah, but he really struggled. His scores were literally mirrored. Critics guessed that perhaps facing his old team and old teammates rattled, and also going against the man he was traded for might have gotten him off his game. Anyways, he did not shoot well, and being the last shooter, he knows he wont advance.
Final Score: 18

Image

Round 2

Jamal Crawford: Being with the lowest score, Crawford shot first and only managed a 16, with 2, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for his respective score. This probably will not be enough, perhaps the pressure got to him or something.
Final Score: 16

Rafer Alston: Only one word can describing Alston performance during this round: outstanding. He waved off all speculation that he is not a shooter and drained 23 shots for 27 points, missing only his first shot and the money ball at the end of the first rack. It was a performance of brilliant shooting.
Final Score: 27

Ray Allen: Just like the first round Allen, Allen was brilliant for the 1-point balls, but he was horrendous when it came to the money balls, making only one on the 2nd rack. This is not good for Allen because he had Jason Williams and Kyle Korver still to shoot.
Final Score: 22

Jason Williams: Perhaps his first round was a fluke as he only made 13 points. He made only one money ball on the 2nd rack. He was looking pretty decent through the first 3 racks with 13 points, but he missed every shot in the last 2 racks, and completely fell apart.
Final Score: 13

Kyle Korver: The only thing that stood between him and the final showdown with Alston, needing to beat 22. Korver shot well and had tied Allen going into the last rack, he took the last rack slow, and made sure he sank the first shot to put himself into the finals again. He ended up scoring his jersey number.
Final Score: 26

Image

Round 3

Kyle Korver: Because he scored one less than Alston, Korver has the unfortunate position of shooting first. He looked good out of the first 2 racks, hitting every shot, but the missed a shot on each of the next 2 racks, and middle the 2nd and 3rd shots on the last rack for total score of 26. Though this was a great school, it still leaves a little bit of room for Alston to pull in front of him.
Final Score: 26
Image

Rafer Alston: Again money balls seemed to be the killer in this contest tonight. Alston was perfect for the 1-point balls, but only hit one money ball, and that really cost him as he lost to Korver 26-22.
Final Score: 22

Wow, there was a bunch of crappy ass shooters in your 3pt contest.

Kirilenko? What the fuck? Whats his 3 pt rating?

Jamal Crawford, Jason Williams and Rafer Alston are only have decent because they attempt 3568439809248 threes a game and Gordon Giricek and Mike Dunleavy are three point threats, but not deadly ones.

Ray Allen and Kyle Korver are probably the only ones that are deserving to be on that list. /endrant

Anyways, good stuff that you won the three point shootout, hopefully we'll see the same quality coverage in the slam dunk contest.

Upset In Slam Dunk Contest

Image

[HOUSTON, Feb. 25] – This year’s contest figured to be something special as it consisted of proven high flyers like the Net’s Richard Jefferson and the Hornets’ J.R. Smith, but it also had 2 guys who are not really known for their dunking, the Jazz’s Andrei Kirilenko and Magic’s Keyon Dooling. Jefferson is the favorite coming in as he has proven himself before while Smith is 2nd and finished 2nd to last in 2005.

Image Image Image Image
Image

Round 1: Dunk 1

Image Image Image Image

The first dunk of the night came from the Utah Jazz’s Andrei Kirilenko, who earlier in the night finished 2nd to last in the 3-point shootout and will be looking to do much better this time around. His first dunk to open the contest was not something that left the crowd’s jaw open, but certainly it was pretty beautiful as he took off from the dotted line with his back to the basket, spun in the air in the form of the Statue of Liberty, and put it down with great force. The judges seemed pleased and awarded Kirilenko a 42, it could easily have been in the 30’s, but Kirilenko had great hang time and that got him some extra points.
Image

Last year’s competitor J.R. Smith came in looking confident and opened big. He faced the other competitors and threw a huge lob over him head, then turned around and took the bounce off the floor with his back again to the basket, then performed a counter-clockwise no-look windmill and finished hard. Everyone jumped out of their seats, and all the judges but Clyde Drexler gave Smith a 10.
Image

Kevin Dooling’s first attempt could be called anything but spectacular. The only thing was good was the takeoff, which was far from the side of the lane, but otherwise it was just an average one handed dunk, no matter how hard Dooling put that one down, he wouldn’t get much. He was probably lucky to even get a 36 on such a plain dunk.
Image

The favorite to win this contest came in and didn’t disappoint. He took the ball to the half court line and ran towards the basket. Jefferson then lifted off with about another foot left before the free throw line and flew in for the huge dunk. It was an exact replica of Michael Jordan’s dunk in ’88 and drew a standing ovation. The judges could give nothing but a 10.
Image

Round 1: Dunk 2

Image Image Image Image

Needing a great series here to have a chance to go to the next round Andrei Kirilenko did just that. Coming from the left side of the basket Kirilenko cupped the ball in his left arm and too off from outside the paint, went under the hoop and put the ball down from the other side of the rim. This dunk nabbed Kirilenko a 48 and a total score of 90.
Image

J.R. Smith needed a only a 41 to advance, yet he sputtered and came out with a dunk that only hurt himself. Smith took off right outside the lane, and went almost horizontal for a windmill dunk. Other than this however there wasn’t any other flare and the judges felt it was too plain and not worthy of advancing.
Image

There was no hope for Dooling already and he pulled off one of the best non-ally hoop tricks in the contest. Running straight at the basket, he took off at the free throw line with his back to the hoop and went for a huge 360 dunk and finished with authority. If only Dooling had pulled this dunk as his first, he could be the one advancing right now. He received a perfect score on this dunk.
Image

Jefferson needed a 41 to advance and took a note from J.R. Smith and made sure his dunk was good enough to secure himself to the next round. On his first dunk, he threw the ball off the huge display screen, but did not manage to catch the ball, therefore it did not count as an attempt. On his second try Jefferson threw the ball between his legs, off the ground and off the backboard. He caught the ball blind and went into a sitting position, cradling the ball before slamming down the huge reverse. This would normally be worth a perfect score, but perhaps because of the first dunk Jefferson only received a 46.
Image

Image

Round 2: Dunk 1

Image Image

Kirilenko opened the 2nd round and he continued from where he left off in the first round with an amazing dunk. Kirilenko first elbowed the ball all the ball to the huge screen, then he caught the ball reversed, then did a 180 degree rotation in mid air before finally slamming it down with him right arm. Certainly this was the most amazing dunk in the whole contest, beating out both Jefferson and Dooling’s free throw dunks.
Image

Jefferson perhaps saw what Kirilenko did and got rattled, but he was not confident and did not come up with the most creative and difficult dunks like he did earlier in the night. He came from the left side and did a funky reverse dunk on the basket, but the judges didn’t think that was his best and made him pay for it. This dunk put Jefferson in a huge hole.
Image

Round 2: Dunk 2

Image Image

Kirilenko needed only a 37 to ensure a win and got just enough. His final dunk came from under the basket, and a little scoop under the basket, ending with a finish on the other side of the hoop. It was not amazing, but it was just good enough to grant him a score of 40 and put the trophy in his hands.
Image
Image

Seeing the title slip away from him Jefferson decided to treat the fans to something special, but at this time it seemed he couldn’t even do anything right. After 2 missed ally hoop attempts Jefferson finally settled for a 2 foot takeoff from the dotted lines inside the paint for a 2-handed dunk to end the contest. After the dunk his expression said it all as he held his head is dismay.

Kirilenko grinning happily as he holds up the Slam Dunk Trophy

So with that there is a new king in the Slam Dunk Contest, and one of the most unlikely ones: Andrei Kirilenko. This win also marks the first time teammates have swept the Saturday night events. So far the Jazz have gathered all the awards in All-Star Weekend. Tomorrow Kirilenko and rookie center Andrew Bogut, co-MVP of the Rookie-Sophomore game, will play for the west in the All-Star Game, with Kirilenko starting at small forward.

NOTE: I didn't play the contest, i let the CPU take control of all the players. As for the layout of the post... its pretty long and spread out..i would have loved to make the film horizontal, but the width limit on nlsc is only 600 px, and i didnt want the images to be resized, therefore i made it vertical. its not the best.. but it serves it purpose. :D enjoy everyone.
