The New York Knicks and the Memphis Grizzlies gave a press conference today in which they announced a trade which sends Eddie Jones and Bobby Jackson to the Grizzlies in exchange for Malik Rose and Steve Francis of the Knicks.
Both teams seemed to be pretty satisfied with this blockbuster trade.
The Knicks receive two well-experienced guards.
Eddie Jones, a 12-year veteran, who played a good role off the bench for the Grizzlies last season (7.2 PPG) is known for his good shot and is a very composed type of player.
Bobby Jackson, 10 years in the NBA, can control the tempo on offense and is known for his solid game without a real weakness. He didn´t play a big role last year (4.7 PPG).
These two players give the Knicks experience they need.
The Grizzlies receive two players, who were very ambitious when they arrived in New York, but could never show their A-game.
Steve Francis, well known Highflyer and scoring threat, also with good court vision. A ridiculous leaper with great athleticism, something the Grizzlies were missing in their backcourt. He played a solid, but for his skill weak season last year (14.2 PPG / 3.2 APG).
Malik Rose is a solid Power Forward, able to grab boards block shots and post up. A paint player. With Larry Brown and C. Hov trying to give young players minutes he didn´t have a great season.
Salary-wise the trade was clearly better for the Knicks. Eddie Jones huge contract (15M) will run out after the season and Bobby Jackson´s is not too big (4M).
Malik Rose´s way too big contract (9M) will expire after this year, but Steve Francis will have a contract over the next 3 years letting him earn 17M+ in the last season.

I think we did the right trade, we give up some good players, but we had to make a change after the last season. We had too many athletes, Francis did not fit into our system. Malik did not get the minutes he deserved.", General Manager Chris Hov claimed.

The Memphis Grizzlies are glad to welcome one of the best guards of the last years. "Steve Francis is exactly the player we needed, an explosive athlete. I am sure he can lead us into the playoffs and further.".

In another Trade of the day, the New Orleans Hornets sent David West and PJ Brown to the Sacramento Kings for Jason Hart and Corliss Williamson. A trade including their power forwards was predictable after the signing of Drew Gooden and the draft of Pops Mensah-Bonsu.
The Kings needed some big man to boost their frontcourt after they were able to resign their shooting guard Bonzi Wells.

Good trade (Y) (Y)

But I would traded Marbury, not Francis...

Sun Jun 25, 2006 3:00 am

Me too , i prefeer Francis ( maybe for his crazy dunks ) , but you get a great shooter and a good PG .

Keep it on !!!

Sun Jun 25, 2006 4:05 am

Yea trade is pretty good, finally u get some players that actually want to play :P
Wallace goes to Charlotte in everyones dynasty, except mine :(

Sun Jun 25, 2006 11:32 am

I guess the trade is alright.

Sacramento got the best out of the trade with the Hornets.

Eddie Jones may be old, but he gives you cap relief and is still a very solid offensive player/defender. Bobby Jackson is always one of the underrated scoring guards that can come off the bench and give you a nifty scoring punch.

Love the deal. (Y)

What he said. =)

Thanks for your comments guys, I did not like Francis at all.
I am not using the Freestyle Superstar button too often due unrealism and I think Francis has not much to offer if you dont posterize defenders all the time.

Gary Payton retires from NBA basketball !
The Miami Heat and the player approved in a press conference that the Eastern Conference Finals 2006 vs the Pistons were the last games of the 37-year old point guard.
The nine-time All-Star and one-time Defensive Player Of The Year said that his body is not longer the fittest and he does not want to risk any injuries at the end of his career as a professional basketballer.
"I think it is time to end, I want to thank everybody supporting me through my career, and I want to wish the Heat good luck for the next season, especially Zo", Payton said according to Alonzo Mourning signing another one-year contract in his hunt after a championship ring.
Payton is not the only player retiring from the NBA this year, take a look at the others in the list below.
We will for sure miss players like "E.T.", "Big Shot Rob" and "The Glove".

Earvin Johnson???

I guess it was a typo.

Its amazing how one Earvin Johnson can do so well and the other one be such a scrub.

After a long offseason for NBA fans the season begins in just a few weeks.
Let´s take a look at the NBA teams, their chances and their new players.

*R=Rookie; *FA=Free Agent

ImageAtlanta Hawks

New: Eddie Gill (FA), Jerome Moiso (FA), Ndudi Ebi (FA), Chris Taft (FA), Saer Sene (R), Steven Smith (R)

Leaver: Donta Smith, Salim Stoudamire, Royal Ivey, Esteban Batista

The Hawks did not sign the best players, but have a team with huge amount of talent. Their starting lineup (except the PG) is a very young, gifted crew, which could cause problems to every opponent.
The point guard spot with the resigning of Tyronne Lue and the signing of Eddie Gill is still not very good. The resigning of Al Harrington was maybe the best move of the Hawks management next to the draft of Saer Sene.

ImageBoston Celtics

New: JJ Redick (R), Matt Haryasz (R)

Leaver: Dan Dickau, Ryan Gomes, Michael Olowokandi

The Boston Celtics had a quiet offseason, for sure the wrong decision after a weak year. JJ Redick could turn into a more than solid player, but he is too similar to Wally Szczerbiak.
Wally´s contract is so huge that there was no space left to sign any Free Agent. It seems like this will be another Paul Pierce year, but also a year without postseason.

ImageCharlotte Bobcats

New: Ben Wallace (FA), Salim Stoudamire (FA), Raul Lopez (FA), Tyrus Thomas (R), PJ Tucker (R)

Leaver: Bernard Robinson, Lonny Baxter, Kevin Burleson, Jake Voshkul, Kareem Rush

The Bobcats made a huge step in this offseason. Signing Ben Wallace was the best decision in their young franchise history.
Wallace is in his prime and should be able to give them the inside presence they needed. Their lineup is one of the best defensively.
Wallace-Okafor-Wallace-......-Knight are nice defenders and tough to beat.
But the "..." is the major problem. There is not shooting guard in Charlotte. Matt Carroll is not a starter, Ray Felton and Salim Stoudamire no real two-guards.
The Bobcats may manage the playoffs for the first time in history, but it will be a one-round and out postseason experience.

ImageChicago Bulls

New: Frank Williams (FA), Amir Johnson (FA), Predrag Drobnjak (FA), Shannon Brown (R), Paul Millsap (R)

Leaver: Othella Harrington, Eddie Basden, Malik Allen, Eric Piatkowski (retired)

The Chicago Bulls were pretty succesfull in the last two years.
So there was no real reason for shaking up the team.
And they didn´t. No important player left the team, the new players are just fillers for injury problems. The rookies have big potential. And the starting five has just grown last year. Another trip to the playoffs, maybe round two.

ImageCleveland Cavaliers

New: Dejuan Wagner (FA), David Noel (R), Ronnie Brewer (R)

Leavers: Martynas Andriusceviki, Alan Henderson (retired), Drew Gooden

The Cavaliers kept their best players, Gooden did not have a good year and Donyell Marshall showed that he is able to start.
"The King" will be better than last year, that alone is a reason that the Cavs should make the playoffs. If Zydrunas Ilgauskas can repeat his great performances of the last year the Cavs are even a Conference Finals contender, although they do not have a real backup center. Ronnie Brewer is one of the better rookies of the draft and could backup for Lebron and Larry Hughes.

others will follow day-by-day, maybe more often :)
so long hov

Tue Jun 27, 2006 3:53 am

Oh so it's Ervin not Earvin

Tue Jun 27, 2006 3:56 am

Interesting seeing Wagner back with the Cavs.

A Ben Wallace, Okafor and Gerald Wallace frontcourt is just scary if you think about it defensively....

Tue Jun 27, 2006 5:10 am

Yea, Earvin Johnson = Magic Johnson, for those who don't know. :|

Nice presentation, keep it up. (Y)

Great updates hova, I like the offseason coverage a lot :D
I like the trade. It gave you some experienced players. Also knowing that you don't like Francis, this will turn good for you.
I didn't understand the trade between Kings and Hornets. I think that hornets were robbed really.
Goodbye Gary Payton..
Also very nice NBA breakdown section, looking forward for more

D-H

*R=Rookie; *FA=Free Agent

ImageDallas Mavericks

New: Alexander Johnson (R), Hassan Adams (R)

Leaver: Darrel Armstrong, Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, Adrian Griffin

The Mavericks did not change too much, and they did not need to. The Conference Semi-Finals vs the Nuggets were a sad end of a very good season. Nowitzki should improve again. Jason Terry and DeSagana Diop were resigned. The Mavs are again a championship contender, since the young players made a huge step (Devin Harris, Josh Howard).

ImageDenver Nuggets

New: Rajon Rondo (R), Denham Brown (R)

Leaver: Francisco Elson, Reggie Evans

Nothing new in Denver. Two average rookies are the new player of the team. Two average frontcourt players left the the Nuggets.
The main pressure will be on Carmelo Anthony. If he can again improve his game, there will be a big chance for the MVP honors + another trip to the finals. The Nuggets do still have a shooting guard problem which has not been solved in offseason, but at least they were able to resign Andre Miller.

ImageDetroit Pistons

New: Donell Taylor (FA), Linton Johnson (FA), Loren Woods(FA), Josh Boone (R), Vladimir Vermeenko (R)

Leaver: Ben Wallace, Alex Acker, Amir Johnson, Tony Delk, Dale Davis (retired)

What did the Detroit Pistons officials just think about in this offseason ?
They were not able to resign their best player of the last season, Ben Wallace. They resigned Kelvin Cato, Tayshaun Prince, but not Ben Wallace ?
That sounds pretty weird an it is. Their draft was okay. Josh Boone can develope into a solid C-F and Vladimir Vereemenko has big potential.
But the not resigning of Ben Wallace took away their chances to be a champ. They signed unknown players, who did not see any minutes last season. No championship for the Pistons this year.

ImageGolden State Warriors

New: Justin Reed (FA), Bobby Brown (R), Jordan Farmer (R)

Leaver: Chris Taft, Monta Ellis, Calbert Cheaney, Mike Dunleavy

One of the big loosers of offseason. Not signing anybody who is at least able to contribute and drafting badly, the Warriors will have a hard season. Baron Davis and especially Jason Richardson have to step up and carry this team, role players are barely available.
Sry, but another trip to the draft lottery.

ImageHouston Rockets

New: Antonio Burks (FA), Paul Davis (R), Patrick O`Bryant (R)

Leavers: Chuck Hayes, David Wesley (retired), Dikembe Mutombo (retired), Jon Barry (retired)

The Rockets were the best team in regular season and had a quiet but good offseason. For retired Dikembe Mutombo they drafted two solid big man to backup for Yao. They signed Antonio Burks to boost their good backcourt in order to get more quantity. T-Mac is still here, so is Yao. This is the most important fact for Houston and will give them another huge year. Luther Head should be able to start now and hit the shots. Rafer Alston is one of the better playmakers, and the bench is quite good with Juwan Howard, Bob Sura and Keith Bogans.

thx for your comments guys, sry for the Earvin typo ;)
I just want to play, but I think it is cooler if you know everything about the teams and stuff.
Maybe I will update today again, but soccer will start soon and it is pretty good weather here (sweatin my ass up)

Wed Jun 28, 2006 1:28 am

Houston retired 3 players!
But they got some nice too...

Wed Jun 28, 2006 3:43 am

Why didnt the Nuggets draft a SG in the 1st round? Meh I really dont like the way CPU handles all the draft for other teams and stuff! Keep up the good work (y)

Wed Jun 28, 2006 3:54 am

Good read man.
Not significant changes in these teams, cept Wallace leaving Pistons

Wed Jun 28, 2006 6:15 am

Glad to see Denham Brown make it to a team....
