MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 20 (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns couldn’t get their 50th win of the season due to the strong play of the Memphis Grizzlies in the 3rd quarter of the game. Jim Jackson scored a team-high 24 points, including 4-7 from three point range in, but it just wasn’t enough to lift the Suns past Memphis as the Grizzlies won 116-103 in the FedEx Forum. The Suns entered the game in first place in the Western Conference but the Spurs didn‘t trail them by far. Although fifth in the West, the Grizzlies hadn‘t won a game yet against the Suns this season.
Grizzlies defensive swingman, James Posey was hot in the 3rd quarter, scoring 14 of his 25 points in that quarter and helping the Grizzlies outscore the high-powered Suns 38-22 in the quarter. Posey also grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out six assists and had five steals in the game in 45 minutes. “He did it all for us tonight,” Coach Mike Fratello said. “He was playing on the defensive end, knocking down outside shots and crashing the boards and there wasn’t too much more you could ask from him.” Posey was guarding Jim Jackson, who scored 24 points, but only shot 8-19 from the field. "Jimmy was huge for us tonight," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "He plays 43 minutes and guards their most affective swingman. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well for us tonight as we fell apart in the 3rd quarter.”
"There's no one team we want to play in the playoffs," Jackson said. "If this team is in our path when the playoffs come around, then we just have to handle it and take care of business." Nash added 22 points and 10 assists for the Suns, who couldn’t continue their great performances on the road this season. The Suns’ starters combined for 96 points, while their bench only had 7 points and the Grizzlies bench outscored the Suns bench 17-7. "They are a very tough team to beat especially when everyone has the green light," Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol said. "They all have the green light to shoot for three every time, and they make them. When you're hitting twos and they're hitting threes, eventually they're going to pull off so that‘s why we had to match their shooting percentage from the outside. We hit some big threes in the 3rd quarter to win it."
"We had some looks down the stretch, and we executed," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said. Give Phoenix credit, they keep coming at you and put pressure on you." Phoenix, just shot 41 percent (34-of-82) in the game compared to the Grizzlies 50% shooting. Quentin Richardson scored just 9 points, but grabbed 10 rebounds, Amare Stoudemire added 21 and Shawn Marion 20 and 8 rebounds for Phoenix.
