Topnotch entry/recap (Y).

Southwest division was sick, and Cavs tied for best record in the league  .

I guess 6th isn't that bad considering Rockets have homecourt advantage and Nash is out. (butterflies in my stomach)

Regular season was great and good luck in the playoffs!

Good luck in the first round. but this is Live 06, do you have homecourt because you have the better record, or do the Suns get it because they're the #3 seed? (I know in RL you'd get, but this is an outdated live)..

GAME RECAP

T-Mac Tops Suns In Game 1

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Houston Rockets took their first step to toppling the reigning two-time defending champion Phoenix Suns with a convincing 99-90 road victory in Game 1 of the 2007-08 Western Conference Quarter Finals.

Like two heavyweights sizing each other up, the teams battled evenly through the first half, neither able to claim more than a 5-point advantage. Amare Stoudemire would carry the offensive load early on for Phoenix while an injury-hampered Shawn Marion struggled to contain Houston's Marvin Williams, who got off to a good start.

The slower, half-court pace of the game favored Phil Jackson's Rockets as the Suns' normally up-tempo style was obviously lacking without All-Star playmaker, Steve Nash. Nonetheless, Marcus Banks, would get the start for Phoenix, doing a decent job protecting the ball and playing tough defense finishing the night with a respectable 11 points, 2 assists, 3 steals and only 1 turnover.

After halftime, the Rockets would exploit their one glaring mismatch - All-Star Tracy McGrady vs Amir Johnson, a 2005 second-round draft pick acquired by Phoenix from the Detroit Pistons. McGrady would launch an impressive salvo of offense, dropping 12-points in the third quarter including two treys and an authoritative dunk over his 2nd-year defender.

Yao Ming would also help the Houston run with stifling defense in the paint and controlling the defensive boards. In total Ming would tally 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks on the night.

"Stoudemire's a tough match-up so I mainly focused on my defense," Yao said post-game. "and when Tracy's feeling it, like he was tonight, you just want to get him the ball and get out of the way."

The Rockets would carry a 75-69 advantage leading into the 4th quarter but despite Ming and McGrady's collective efforts, the reigning champs would keep things close and mount a final charge led by Shawn Marion. Marion seemed to grimace in pain any time he raised his arms above his head, obviously affected by the sore ribs he suffered in Phoenix's last regular season game, but would still finish with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Marvin William's would play the wounded Marion to practically a standstill with 15 points, 8 rebounds and a steal.

Though the Suns run would close the gap to as few as 4-points, it would not be enough to overcome the momentum of Tracy McGrady. With Phoenix threatening in the closing minutes, McGrady would drain back-to-back treys effectively taking the wind out of the Suns' sails with each hit. Houston's made free-throws would polish off the champs and have them headed to the locker room to mull over strategies for game 2.

"This was a nice win for us tonight," said McGrady following the match. "When they were making a push at the end, our guys stayed focused and played well; just a really nice win."

McGrady finished with a team-high 39 points, including 5-of-9 from downtown, and added 5 rebounds and a steal for good measure.

Stoudemire led Phoenix with 23 points, 13 rebounds, an assist and a block.

Game 2 will be played Tuesday night in Phoenix.

Notes:

Houston's, Marvin Williams, left the game just before the half after an awkward landing after being sandwiched mid-air between Phoenix's Amir Johnson and Amare Stoudemire; he would return to finish out the second half

Amazing recap man! Loving the use of the .GIF's. Also, nice win on your part.
Just lock in game 2, and you'll be alright. Home court advantage is a must-have in the playoffs.

Nice win in game 1! Can't believe you finally got to this point. T-Mac was on fire. Without Boris Diaw, they had to play AMir johnson, but damn if Live was smart, they'd put Raja Bell on T-mac. Anyways this format is really nice, but my alltime favorite was the layout you used here: http://www.nbaliveforums.com/viewtopic. ... 060#841060

Anyways keep it up!

skillz, homi, oskar, orlmagic, cat, JMS - thx for the comments gang; appreciate the support :)

lamrock - used to think you were just some over-opinionated prick; but after a while i realized you're the straightest shooter on this forum, telling it like it is with no candy-coating and i respect that; thx for following man

chase - thx man; "IF live were smart" is the operative phrase ;) but you're right; how hard could it be for the cpu to compare ratings, primary/secondary positions vs experience/years played then re-adjust starting lineups for injuries accordingly; ah well... i'm no programmer so maybe it's tough, who knows

not sure which format you're referring to as they all kinda jumble up when i click that link; i'm sure i know which one though but i think this current format allows me more freedoms to display info

anyway, thx again all for following; game 2 recap coming soon

GAME RECAP

Defending Champs On The Ropes

PHOENIX (AP) -- Despite a herculean effort by superstar, Amare Stoudemire, the Houston Rockets have seized control of the series in a 114-107 overtime road victory vs the two-time defending champions.

Tracy McGrady and the Rockets picked up where they left off in game 1, hammering the Suns with a balanced inside-out attack which gave Houston an 8-point lead to start the second quarter; but then Amare decided he'd had enough.

Stoudemire dominated the 2nd quarter single-handedly like a one-man wrecking crew, exploding for 18 points including several rim-rocking facials, even ending the quarter with a rare, buzzer-beating trey. Defensively, Amare's menacing shot-blocking crippled the Rockets attack completely, turning the Suns' 8-point deficit into a 10-point advantage by hafltime.

"Raw power man," said McGrady of Stoudemire's inspired performance. "He's a beast; it's impossible to contain a beast once he gets outta the cage."

The Rockets would quickly find themselves facing a daunting 17-point deficit midway through the 3rd quarter under the relentless assault of the Suns quick and powerful front court, finally forcing a displeased Phil Jackson to burn a timeout.

"The crowd was into it. They were into it. We were playing intimidated," said coach Jackson. "I told our guys to stay aggressive; we didn't come this far just to be intimidated."

After the timeout the Rockets seemed to regroup with fire in their eyes, matching the Suns aggressive intensity with a 13-2 run of their own in the most physical and punishing stretch of the series thus far. By the start of the 4th, the Suns lead was narrowed to single-digits, with Houston carrying momentum.

However, only minutes into the 4th quarter, just as the Rockets would finally wrestle the lead away to take an 81-79 advantage, Yao Ming would take a hard foul on a dunk attempt from Phoenix's backup Center, Azizi Badu. Ming seemed to grab for his back at first, then later covered his face.

It's unclear what injury was incurred but Ming left the game for the locker room and did not return. Yao finished a solid night with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks. Badu was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and ejected, ending with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists but will face fines and/or possible suspension.

"Completely uncalled for," said coach Jackson after the game. "I hope the Commissioner reviews the tapes and takes appropriate action. Yao was obviously targeted to be taken out using whatever means necessary."

When told of Jackson's comments Suns coach Mike D'Antoni responded, "Yes, well, that's hogwash. This is the playoffs - where 'hard fouls' happen."

Both teams battled evenly into the closing seconds of the 4th quarter. With Phoenix leading 97-95, the Suns would miss a golden opportunity to close the Rockets out in regulation when Sean May snatched an offensive rebound and converted for the tie at the 19.2 second mark. Stoudemire would be unable to convert a final attempt for the Suns on the opposite end, forcing the extra period.

In overtime, the Rockets would relying on their tough defense, forcing Phoenix to miss their first 4 shot attempts while the Houston continued to score and slowly pulled ahead. Deron Williams would increase their lead with a clutch three-pointer at the 2:43 mark, giving Houston a 104-99 advantage.

Phoenix's offense would continue to sputter and Joey Graham would break things open with a second trey a few possessions later, giving Houston a double-digit advantage with 58.2 seconds and sending a stream of raucous fans heading for the parking lot.

"Of course it's disappointing. We had a huge lead and let it slip away," said a visibly frustrated Stoudemire after the game. "When you leave it all out on the court like that and still fall short, you can't help but feel disappointed. Now, we regroup and head out there, try to do what they did to us on our court; try and turn this series around."

Stoudemire would finish his epic night with 28 points, 14 rebounds, 2 assists and 6 blocks while Tracy McGrady captured "Player of the Game" honors for the second time in as many games with 29 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

With the defending champs back on their heels trailing in the series 2-0, they'll need to muster every ounce of championship mettle and resolve to figure out a way to chip back into the series.

chaser7 - thx for the vote of confidence man ;) as far as the boxscores? i've noticed there simply are none during the playoffs! game-by-game stats that is, like during hte reg season; at least not that i've found; if you or anyone knows a way to get the game stats as you would in the reg season, please let me know (as this current way i'm doing it is tedious and makes me not want to include them at all!);

souk - thx for commenting man and PHO is a really good team; if it weren't for that 'Cheapshot' Bob Horry and some questionable suspensions vs the Spurs, they had the momentum to be world champs; just think if Joe Johnson had stayed with them and not signed with ATL... wow :shock: but i think there was just no way to swing it financially;

homi - yah man; luckily it's a minor one and Yao's still playable; made me cringe when it happened though hahah;

JMS - about time! j/k i guess your studies come first so it's alright ;) i've been super busy so just no time for the recaps lately; but will try to be more diligent and aim for at least one every Sunday; sound good?

Game 3 results coming up...

GAME RECAP

Setting Suns On The Brink

HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Rockets hammered the two-time defending Champion Phoenix Suns to the brink of elimination with a decisive 95-83 home victory and now possess a commanding 3-0 stranglehold on the series.

The Toyota Center crowd roared wildly all night as their Rockets blasted out of the gate and never looked back. Houston built an early 13-2 lead in what looked to be a potential blowout before a revitalized, injury-free Shawn Marion stepped up to lead the Suns resistance; still, Marion could not stop Houston from building a 28-17 1st-quarter lead, though they would lose starting Shooting Guard, Joey Graham, to injury at the 5:48 mark.

Graham would return to play limited minutes in the second half but seemed to wince in pain at times and finished the night after playing only 24 minutes, collecting 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the process. The extent of his injuries are undetermined as is his status for game 4. Despite the Rockets' good start, Leandro Barbosa energized Phoenix coming off the bench and helped narrow the gap to 52-50 by the half and managed to quiet the crowd.

But Houston clamped down on Barbosa defensively entering the third quarter and pulled away once again with a solid and balanced offensive attack. Houston quickly rebuilt the lead by as many as 14 at one stage as the Suns tried desperately to slow the Rockets down while trying to find any hint of rhythm to their sputtering offense.

Deron Williams played a major role in keeping the Suns offensively out of sync as he flustered the Phoenix guards forcing starters, Raja Bell and Marcus Banks, into a combined 8 turnovers. Under Williams' relentless pressure, Banks shot a horrendous 1-of-11 from the field finishing with 4 points, 2 assists while D-Will ended with 12 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

The defending champs looked bewildered and demoralized as they started the 4th quarter facing a 71-58 deficit which simply could not be overcome. Outstanding play by Rockets' Power Forward, Marvin Williams, helped offset Marion's big night and solidified the final outcome.

Williams ended the night with 14 points, 3 steals and a team-high 13 rebounds to capture "Player of the Game" honors while Marion led Phoenix with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks.

In Rasheed Wallace-like fashion, a confident Marvin Williams provided the boldest quote of the night.

"They're not the same team," said Williams after the match. "Without Nash, they're just not the same team. We will take them out in four."

When told of his young teammate's bold prediction and asked if he too felt a sweep was inevitable, Tracy McGrady, notorious for making similar brash yet unfulfilled, foot-in-mouth statements in Playoffs past, chuckled and shook his head.

"Man, I'm not even gonna go there," he said with a smile. "This is the Playoffs; anything can and does happen in the Playoffs and you can't count anybody out. All I know is I've been disappointed far too many times in the past by not getting out of the first round so as far as I'm concerned? I'm playing game 4 as if we were the ones down 0-3. For me, it's a must win."

McGrady will have his first of four opportunities to end the Phoenix Suns' two-year Championship reign and finally exorcise his past demons, silence his critics and advance to the second round if he can lead the Rockets to victory in game 4, Friday night.
