good to hear that your season is starting....

as for it being a spam thread, I don't buy into that....first & foremost, it's my dynasty....last year I found out most dynasty threads, the poster got pissed off if it went slightly off-topic, but I don't mind or care if it goes a little off-topic at times and ppl have a laugh....I know I can't give consistent updates due to time constraints IRL....I think the reason it got called a spam thread was because of guys like Sit and Weaver just having a laugh....and Jugs, you're one of the biggest culprits on NLSC, so I don't think you can talk

but as I said, first & foremost, it's a dynasty....if it goes away from that, I'll stop posting it....

cheers

BLAZERS MONTHLY RECAP - MARCH 2006

The month of March 2006 started poorly as the Blazers dropped 3 straight to continue their skid to 7 consecutive games. It took a 2 gutsy wins on the road in Houston & Toronto to turn the tide of the month around. Followed by a 34pt drubbing in Minnesota, the team fell to a 2-4 month & on the verge of being eliminated from the playoff race.

Performance-wise, the month saw newcomer Morris Peterson fit in quickly as he averaged approximately 18ppg, 4rpg, 3apg & 1.5spg and come up big-time in the club's 2 wins. Sebastian Telfair also had a strong month, but it was rookie guard Jarrett Jack who stepped up in March. Playing a lot at the 2-guard spot, Jack averaged approximately 9ppg for the month off the bench. The month of March also saw the re-activation of rookie guard Martell Webster, who responded immediately with a 10pt game against the Mavericks.

With the playoffs an almost mathematical impossibility, April will probably be a month where the youngsters will get more burn as management will like to see how they figure to fit in the team's future plans, heading into what figures to be an important off-season for the Blazers.

GAME OF THE MONTH (MARCH '06)

Each month I will do a quick recap of what I considered to be the best game of the month. This month sees the Portland Trailblazers (5-16) go on the road to face the Toronto Raptors (8-11).

Mar 17, 2006 - Portland 130 at Toronto 125 (2OT) [4th Qtr INTERVENTION GAME]

Toronto took charge in the 1st period as they finished the quarter leading by 4pts, 27-31. In the 2nd, the Blazers came back and took a 2pt lead into the half, 55-53. In the 3rd quarter, as the teams went basket-for-basket, the Blazers held onto a slim 1pt lead, 79-78, going into the final quarter.

Much like the rest of the game, the 4th quarter was tightly contested as both teams still had an eye on the playoffs, as unlikely as it seemed for both teams. Strong play down the stretch by guards Sebastian Telfair and Morris Peterson helped the Blazers push the Raptors, but Chris Bosh and Joey Graham countered that effort as the teams finished the game at a deadlock, tied at 100-100, after a Jack miss on the buzzer. The game was headed into overtime to decide a winner.

Image
Jarrett Jack's superb combo guard play has helped to ease the loss of Juan Dixon, who could do nothing on this play to stop Jack's acrobatic basket

Overtime started poorly for the Raptors as Chris Bosh came down badly with what appearred to be a leg injury (he returned later in the game). The Raptors would regroup behind Joey Graham who seemed to single-handedly put the team on his rookie back, to bring the game back to a 113-113 tie with a couple of ticks left. However, the Blazers once again couldn't close the game as this time Sebastian Telfair missed a midrange jumper on the buzzer. This meant that the game was going into a 2nd overtime.

Image
Rookies Jose Calderon & Joey Graham looked like they had been doing this for years on this fantastic alleyoop play

Determined not to let the game get away from them, the Blazers fed the hot hand of Darius Miles, as he overmatched the athleticism of his defenders (Eric Williams & Matt Bonner), to close the epic double-overtime game 130-125.

ImageImage
Morris Peterson (above left) came up with clutch play after clutch play throughout; but it was forward Darius Miles who was the go-to-guy in the final minutes, as he sealed the deal

Portland (6-16) seemed to want the game slightly more and were not going to relent the game to the pestering Toronto Raptors (8-12). This was a very tough game, but the heart the team showed after Zach Randolph fouled off was tremendous, most notably Darius Miles' ticker. It would be confirmed later that night that Chris Bosh had bone spurs in his left foot and would miss up to 2 weeks of action, which is an even bigger blow for the Raptors' chances of making the playoffs.

The Player of the Game was ex-Raptor Morris Peterson who had a good game against his former teammates as he had 30pts, 5rebs, 5asts, 5stls, 2blks & some key baskets down the stretch.

LINE OF THE MONTH

Each month I'll post a statistical line that really jumped out at me during the month. It might be an outstanding performance or a very poor performance by a player. Hope you enjoy.

Mar 14, 2006 - Portland 108 at Houston 103

Image

Rookie guard Jarrett Jack seems to be one of the major benefactors in last month's trade for swingman Morris Peterson. The loss of Juan Dixon has opened up a role that Jack played at in college, the combo guard position. Jack seems to have thrived in this role as his ballhandling & QB-ing skills still need some polish before he can lead a NBA team full-time.

On this one night in Houston, one could be forgiven for thinking that Jarrett Jack was back playing for Georgia Tech and playing against University of Houston, not T-Mac & the Houston Rockets. Jack came out and sparked the team with an 11pt, 3reb 1st half effort, but it was his 4th quarter heroics that stood out. Jack wanted the ball down the stretch and Blazers' coach Nate McMillan went with the hot hand, as Jack delivered again and again. By the end of the night, not only had Jack led his team to a big win over the Rockets, but he had contributed a career high 27pts.

This outburst shouldn't be a surprise to fans of the college game, as Jack has always been able to step up and dominate offensively at times. If Jack can prove he can play the PG spot full-time next season, the Portland Trailblazers have a very strong PG combination (Telfair & Jack) for years to come.

ImageImage
Jack was wondering who this big Asian guy was, Yao who?

ImageImage
Jack was hitting the midrange J well on this night, but his ability to use his body strength around the hoop could be an asset for years to come

PLAYER CARD OF THE MONTH (MAR '06)

Jarrett Jack stamped his mark on the league in March. The coming years will determine whether he can become more than just another cog in the system

PLAY OF THE MONTH (MAR '06)

Image
Outlaw steals the ball, leads the break and throws a precise, pin-perfect alley-oop pass for the streaking Darius Miles who knows how to finish in these situations

That's it for March guys. Probably will only show Play of Month if there is a spectacular one like the above. Apart from that, hope you enjoyed.

Cheers

Hm, season over almost, it seems. Too bad, maybe you'll strike gold in the lottery.

The Atlanta Hawks are in 5th place in the East at 18-9.

Mon Feb 06, 2006 2:33 am

Good job on the dynasty X.

Mon Feb 06, 2006 6:05 am

Wow Jack really stepped up. (Y) He had amazing games, let's see if you can take 7th or 8th seed, X.

Mon Feb 06, 2006 10:23 am

How is Joey Grahm averaging 21 ppg?

I think I'm boycotting your dynasty because of those offensive pictures. I must not have read the captions. That actually doesn't like like a posterization.

Mon Feb 06, 2006 12:12 pm

Impressive game by Jack...

I hope the off-season brings you more luck X!

I dunno, headshapes are never easy....it's up to you to find one as I could waste hours finding a good match....maybe Yuta Tabuse?!?

Cyril Takayama wrote:word jack, i cheered for them when he was at GT, good to see him play pretty well.

yep, I like Jack & hope he can stick around in Portland for a while :P

wankster wrote:Good job on the dynasty X.

Thierry. wrote:Wow Jack really stepped up. (Y) He had amazing games, let's see if you can take 7th or 8th seed, X.

yep, it was a breakout game for Jack....it really surprised me....since then he has come back down to Earth but now figures into the rotation as Telfair's primary backup, ahead of Steve Blake....as for the 7th or 8th seed, not likely as it will only take either one win by one of teams in 7th or 8th or one loss by me to finish my season off....so mathematically, it's near impossible :( ahh well, makes me happy, wouldn't feel right being in playoffs in 1st season....I'll follow Jugs' advice & make a run in '07 :P

wankster wrote:How is Joey Grahm averaging 21 ppg?

that was for the month of March, not overall....maybe the Raptors only played a few games, as remember he scored about 32pts against me in that double OT game....so he might have only averaged about 15ppg over the rest of the month

it wasn't a posterization, it was a schooling in the worst sort of way :P I guess I failed to post that Yao was playing a pretty good game (20-10 at least with a handful of blocks)....

Emiliano wrote:Impressive game by Jack...

cheers Emiliano....Jack was jacked up, that's for sure....as for the off-season, main priority is to re-sign Przy-bizz to a long-term deal....next agenda will be NBA Draft where I will likely hold a mid-lottery pick (6-10)....I could use a PF & the best available might be someone like Shelden Williams who could be a pretty darn good backup PF....who knows, anything can happen in the draft....maybe I'll end up with Splitter again  or that kid called Watson  maybe I'll look at making a deal as well, depending on how the roster looks, but it will likely be very similar to this season's, but with a new face or three....I think the '07 &/or '08 off-season will be the big ones....
