Inside the NBA with Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson and Ernie Johnson
Welcome everyone to Inside the NBA All-Star Weekend Edition. I'm Ernie Johnson along side Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. In a few minutes we will be watching the GotMilk? Rookie Challenge. This game will features upcoming superstars of NBA. On one side, you have the 03-04 GotMilk Rookie of the year Lebron James. He will be joined by fellow sophomore Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. While the Rookie team will be led the this year Top 3 pick of the draft, Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon. So let’s talk about the game.
I like the players they’ve selected for these festivities. Everyone were deserving to play for this game. And I think this will be a very good game with lots of fastbreaks anf high-flying dunks.
The Sophomores looked very impressive. You have James and Anthony teaming up again. But this time, fans will also have an eye for players like Wade and Hinrich. And yes, they also have Bosh who started to show great improvement of his game and the Mavs duo of Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels. Kaman and Dupree completes the line-up
Yeah, I think they were the favorite in this game. The trio of James, Anthony and Wade were enough to contend on any team in the NBA. But I think the Rookie will give them a good fight.
Oh, let’s first talk about the Sophomore.
Whatever Kenny, Okey what do you want to talk about the Sophomore.
Well, lets talked how the teams were selected. Let’s begin with the Sophomores.
No doubt, Lebron, Melo and Wade were locked on this selections. They he top-tiers of last year draft class.
Okey, so I’m just gonna add. Players like Bosh and Hinrich, as I said are now showing their true caliber, With enough opportunities, they can showed their belong on the top among sophomores and be a superstar in the coming years.
Well oh, well, that leave me with the remaining players. Chris Kaman was also locked for this squad because of lacks of quality big man of last year draft. The duo of Howard and Daniels showed last year playoff they can play big time and now their team gave enough time inside the court. The only surprise I guess was the selection of Ronald Dupree. Why didn’t they picked Haslem, Hayes, Sweetney or Pietrus.
Common, Charles…
Dupree were playing good basketball since Prince sideline for 2 months. Those players you mentioned were more recognized players but don’t mean they deserved a spot in the team.
Those players played limited minutes, just like Haslem. During his rookie year, he got lots of minutes but with the addition of Shaq and veteran guys like Doleac and Laettner, he was lost in the rotation. Same goes to the other players.
Okey, I’m gonna stop arguing…But how about Darko Milicic, why not let him play just this game…
Now lets go the Rookie team. They not as impressive as the Sophomore but do you think they go toe-to-toe with the other team.
The Rookie team also looked impressive but less compared to the Sophs. A team like this with Emeka and Howard as your frontcourt and Gordon on backcourt will also give teams lots of problem.
Those three along with Andre Iguodala, the leading candidate for GotMilk? Rookie of the year, and Devin Harris will be a formidable starting line-up.
Also to think they also have players like Childress, Deng and Josh Smith from the bench, that team were awesome.. Oh by the way, Swift will start not Howard, just correcting you bro..
Do the selections fair?? Any other players you think have to be included in this team???
As I said they all deserved it. Players like Shaun Livingston, Jameer Nelson and Rafael Araujo also deserved a spot but those already on the team have better stats and playing well at this moments.
Yeah, Nelson plays behind Francis, Livingston behind Jaric and Magette and that’s why they do get enough PT to show their stuff. Even early favorite like Al Jefferson and Delonte West disappear in this season coz of lack of playing time.
I think all players deserved it, just looked at the starting line-up. All except Okafor, had won rookie of the month honors. And okafor lead all rookies in double-double this season.
Last question, who will win this game.
Sophomore no doubt.
I also go for the Sophs, And you Charles??
I'l go with the Rookie, just for fun but I think they can steal this one.
It will be Sophomore by 5!!!
Well, that's it for tonight folks. We will see you next time on Inside the NBA. I'm Ernie Johnson along with Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson. Goodnight.

Rookie All-Stars vs. Sophomore All-Stars

After announcing the players and just right after jumpball, the Pepsi arena erupted with applause when Carmelo scored the first two points, a 2-handed dunk. He then follow it with another dunk, this time using his left hand, to give the Sophs a 4-0 lead. Gordon then answered it with an easy jumper. Fans, especially Raptors have anxious moment when they saw Bosh go down hard while attempting a dunk. Swift accidentally bumped him and he was about to fall. He injured his arm in the process and had to go to the locker room for the physical therapist to check his injury.
Josh Howard, who replaced Bosh, teamed up with James for a 10-2 run for a 10 point Sophomores lead. Both team then traded baskets, mostly on high flying dunk, alley-oops and wide open mid-range jumpers. Howard led all scorers with 10 points in this quarter.

In the next quarter, Sophomores led by James and Wade tried to blow this game wide. They made an 8-1 run and led by 20 early in this quarter. Rookies showed their immaturity and unfamiliarity with each other as they committed turnovers one after another. With the game all in favor of the Sophs, they played relax and tried fancy stuff like no-look passes and difficult dunks. With this, Rooks found a way to make a comeback and the duo of Okafor and Howard brought hopes for their team and cut the deficit to only 10. A late run before the quarter end, this time by Iguodala and Swift helped then to make it a 4 point game heading to halftime break.
KEY PLAYER OF THE HALF

In the 2nd half, the game becoming interesting as the Rookies found their game and never let the Sophs go up by more than six points. The game shifted from a fast paced, free running game to a serious, methodical game. Bosh returned to the game to scored 6 of his 10 points in the quarter. Sophomores still led most of the way but the Rookies just right in their backs. Late in the quarter, with Sophs leading by 5 points, Okafor and Gordon made 3 consecutive baskets, 2 from Gordon, to put the Rookies ahead for the first time, 88-87. Wade made a quick jumper to put them back in the lead. Fans saw the first tie of the game at 90-all and were heading to the last period with the score of 92-all. But Kaman made a stupid foul against Swift with 0.6 seconds and gave the Rooks a chance to lead heading to the next quarter. Swift split the charity and 3rd quarter end at 93-92.

Anthony then made a jumper to recover a 1-point lead for the Sophs. But things get tough for the Sophs as they watched the Rooks made a 6-0 run and enjoyed their biggest lead of the game at 5. The game turned completely around as the Sophs now playing catch up ballgame in the last period. Hinrich, wade and Kaman conspired to make one last try to turn this game in their favor. They successfully do it, thanks to Kaman rebounds, defense and putbacks. Hinrich gave the team the needed outside sniping and Wade doing everything with his passing and driving to the baskets. Again, The Rooks showed immaturity and let them slipped an almost won ballgame. In the end, it was only Iguodala and Gordon has the will to give up a fight. Anthony and James then put the finishing touches for a 134-124 Sophomores win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
GAME RECAP

Chris Kaman surprisingly bagged the MVP plum thru his defense in a
game full of offensive exhibition.
DENVER, Feb. 18 (Ticker) -- In a spectacularly entertaining display, the Sophomores team headed by Lebron James, outlasted the Emeka Okafor’s Rookie team 134-124 on Saturday afternoon as NBA All-Star Saturday got off to a spirited start. The game features full of jaw-dropping alley-oops dunks, three-point bombs and full- and half-court bounce passes, no-look passes and fancy and acrobatics slams and dunk.
With all of the attention centered around Wade, James, and Anthony on one side and top rookies in Okafor, Howard and Gordon on the other, a surprise player win the MVP plum. Chris Kaman played silent but effective game, he finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks.
I was surprised to win this award," Kaman said. "A lot of guys want to high fly and dunk and some guy just shoot the lights out. It’s not my kind of game; I can do all the dirty work like defense and rebounding and helped my team win.”
Sophomores showed their offensive skills as four players scored 20 points or more. Lebron James, who will also play on Sunday All-Star game, led all Sophs with his 28 points. Local favorite, Carmelo Anthony, added 20 points while both Dwyane Wade and Kirk Hinrich tallied 21 points each.
James, and Anthony were again sensational teaming up for the 2nd straight got Rookie game, Both displayed several jaw-dropping plays and showed excellent passing to set-up one another.
"It was just fun tonight to be on the court with everyone especially here in Denver," Anthony said.
"Yeah, it's all about having fun and that's what we did. Though we also want to win this game," James added.
On the other side, the Rookies got a big game from Ben Gordon who scored 28 points to shared game-high honors. Dwight Howard, who helped his team came back in the 2nd quarter, tallied 19 points and 8 rebounds coming from the bench. Leading 04-05 GotMilk? Rookie of the Year candidate Andre Iguodala contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds. Okafor also added 18 points and 9 rebounds.
“Ben (Gordon) showed why he was a no.3 pick, he’s a very versatile player, he can go inside and can also burn you from outside,” Coach Bickerstaff said who coached the Rookies team.
