TV, radio: TNT , ESPN Radio

DENVER, Feb. 18 (Ticker) -- Denver will host the 11th annual got milk? Rookie Challenge tonight to start off the 2004-05 All-Star Weekend. There will be nine of the brightest young rookies featured in tonight's game, along with nine sophmore players who have extended their game this season to earn a spot on the roster. There will be four players from the Rookie-Sophmore game that will also partcipate in the 2005 NBA All-Star Game. Cavaliers guard/forward Lebron James, Heat guard Dwyane Wade and Bobcats forward Emeka Okafor will represent the East, while Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony will represent the West.

The Chicago Bulls are the only team to have three players playing in tonight's Rookie Challenge. Luol Deng, Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich. Each one of them have made solid contributions to the team as Hinrich leads the team in scoring (19.5) and assists (6.8). Gordon is leading all rookies in scoring, averaging 18ppg in 49 games and Deng is averaging 14.4ppg and 7.6rpg for Chicago.

The two top draft picks from this season's draft have made big impacts in the league and for their team. The number one pick, Dwight Howard averages just over 16ppg and 9rpg for the Orlando Magic who just stand 1.5 games out of the playoffs. Emeka Okafor leads the expansion Charlotte Bobcats in scoring and rebounding. He averages 17.7ppg and averages 12.8rpg which is 2nd in the league behind Ben Wallace.

Lebron James is leading in MVP votes for the first half of the season. He is amazingly averaging 25.5ppg, 9.3rpg, 6.6apg and 2.33spg for the Cavaliers who stand in the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. "He has truly shown that he can mature as a player and his numbers have sky-rocket from last season," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. Lebron's long-time friend, Carmelo Anthony has had a great year as well averaging 20.7ppg, 9.0rpg and 5.4apg for the 30-23 Denver Nuggets. Anthony will have the home crowd on his side tonight in Denver.

Sophomores Stop Rookies in the
got milk? Rookie Challenge

Carmelo Carries Sophomores

Carmelo Anthony won MVP Honors leading the Sophmore squad with 35 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals

DENVER, Feb. 18 (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony gave the home fans plenty of reasons to cheer. Anthony, the Denver Nuggets' star forward who has always seem to be 2nd to his friend Lebron James, scored 19 of his 35 points in the second half to lead the Sophomores to a 163-156 comeback victory in the got milk? Rookie Challenge. "It's a wonderful feeling," said Anthony, who was named the game's MVP. "You know, this is another positive thing I can put on my resume. It's a great feeling coming out here on my home court and getting MVP of the rookie-sophomore game." Anthony said that this could be the beginning of something good as he also made the All-Star Game for the first time in his two-year career.

Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers added 28 points, the Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade chipped in 27 and the Los Angeles Clippers' center Chris Kaman had 20 and 14 rebounds for the Sophomores, who trailed by as many as 14 points despite leading 69-64 at the end of the first half. The second-year players, who played very relaxed in the third quarter, came out into the 4th quarter with a sense of purpose and took the lead for good, after Lebron was fouled late in the 4th quarter to make both free throws. "We didn't play well in the 3rd quarter," Korver said. "We weren't really utilizing our abilities really well. We came out in the 4th quarter and Anthony said, 'We got to win this one.' We came out and started playing a lot harder on defense and ended up winning the game in overtime."

"I think the second half, we picked it up a little bit, especially just coming out right in the second half," Chicago Bulls rookie Luol Deng said. "I think the Sophomores must have spoke about it in the huddle before the start of the 4th quarter because they came out pretty intense, and we could see that." Anthony made 15-of-21 shots for the Sophomores, who shot just 28% in the 3rd quarter, but shot a combined 51% in the 4th and extra period. "It's a very talented bunch," Sophomores coach Bob McAdoo said of the young stars. "LeBron, especially, because he's so big and physical and he sees the court so well. And now he's developed a 3-point shot. He's just going to be impossible to stop the rest of the year and in the future."

"We came back, and our goal was to beat them by 20, and even though we didn't do that, we did what we needed to do to get the game in overtime," Anthony said. "Things have not went as good as it should have this season, but he's starting to get his mind straight and not worry about the off-the-court things," James said of Anthony. "I'm so happy for him, he got the MVP tonight. It's supposed to work out that way. It's going to work out the best for him." Ben Gordon led the Rookies with 25 points and 76ers' guard Andre Iguodala scored 21 points to pace the Rookies, who shot 47 percent for the game.

Official Rules and Flow of Play
Rules
Four players - Competing in a two-round timed “obstacle course” event consisting of dribbling, passing and shooting stations.

 Two rounds of competition. The two players with the fastest times from the first round advance to the Finals.
 Players will be timed on a clock starting at 00:00.0. The clock stops when the final shot is made. (Start and Stop is on ref's whistle.)
 Players must observe basic NBA ballhandling rules while completing the course.
 The three passing and the "top of the key" shooting challenges are considered completed (player can move on) when he either (1) successfully hits the target/makes the shot OR (2) exhausts the corresponding rack of balls at the target/basket.
 For the opening layup and the final shot, the player must rebound his own ball until the basket is made.
 In the case of a tie in either round (times will be to the tenth of a second), the tied players will repeat the course.
 Players are subject to disqualification (at the final discretion and judgment of the NBA referee) for failure to attempt all of the challenges as they are designed and intended to be completed.
 Order of competition in the Finals is determined by inverse order of first round times.
 There are no "time penalty" assessments.

Flow of Play
1) Start - On referee’s whistle, the clock starts and the player picks up the first ball off of a pedestal. He proceeds to dribble along baseline towards the basket where he must make a:

2) Layup/dunk - (Note: player must rebound the same ball if he misses and once the shot is made he will leave that ball behind), he then proceeds to the far side of court to:

3) New ball - Picks up 2nd ball off pedestal and proceeds up court to:

4) Crossover dribble - starting around the 1st pylon to the left, then around the 2nd pylon to the right, around the 3rd pylon to the left, and finally around the 4th pylon to the right, he then approaches:

5) Chest pass – Using the ball in his hand from the crossover dribble section, he attempts to complete the chest pass. If the first attempt is made, he moves on. If not, he must use the four additional balls on the corresponding ball rack until either (a) the pass is made or (b) all the balls are exhausted (one ball at a time/towards the target) – at which point he moves to:

6) Bounce pass – Five balls on rack. Player may move on when the pass is made or when all five balls are exhausted (one ball at a time/towards the target) – at which point he moves to:

7) Jump shot – Five balls on rack. Player may move on when the shot is made or when all five balls are exhausted (one ball at a time/towards the basket) – at which point he moves to:

8) Outlet pass – Five balls on rack. One final time, the player may move on when the pass is made or when all five balls are exhausted (one ball at a time/towards the target) – at which point he moves to:

9) New ball – Picks up new ball on pedestal and proceeds back downcourt to:

10) Speed dribble - starting around the 1st pylon to the left, around the 2nd pylon to the right and then around the 3rd pylon to the left, he then finishes up with:

11) Final basket – The clock will stop on the referee’s whistle, when the ball goes through the rim. Any type of shot may be taken as long as the final pylon in the speed dribble section has been cleared (at the referee’s discretion). Once again, the player must rebound the same ball if he misses and continue until he makes the basket to stop the clock.

Note: Players will be subject to disqualification (at the final discretion and judgment of the referee) for failure to attempt all of the challenges as they are designed and intended to be completed.

Steve Nash Wins PlayStation Skills Challenge
Nash Shows Off Skills

Nash broke the Skills Challenge record finishing the final round in 28.7 seconds

DENVER, Feb. 19 -- Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash set an all-time course record as he won the 2005 PlayStation Skills Challenge during All-Star Saturday Night presented by America Online. Nash completed the course in 28.7 seconds during the final round, eclipsing the previous record held by Baron Davis of the New Orleans Hornets, who completed the course in 28.7 in the first round of the competition last year. The event consisted of four of the NBA's best guards -- Nash along with Seattle's Luke Ridnour, Washington's Gilbert Arenas and Earl Boykins-- racing against the clock through a dribbling, passing and shooting skills obstacle course.

Nash wins one of the many activites that Phoenix players will be featured in for the rest of the night and tomorrow in the All-Star Game. "It's great for the organization," said Nash after his win. "This year has been really exciting for all of the fans, coming out and really getting behind us. I think that was a really important thing for the organization this year." Nash was on-target throughout the compeition, completing the course in 31.4 seconds in the opening round to advance to the finals along with Boykins (32.6 opening round).

Boykins struggled with the shot from the key during the finals, taking four attempts to hit the jumper and finishing in 37.6 seconds to come in second. It was surprisingly the shooting, and not the passes, that proved to be the biggest challenges in the course. Before the event, Arenas said, "Shooting and dribbling I can do, but passing into a little hole, I am not sure I can do that yet. But I will do my best and most likely I will come out with the win."

But during the event itself, it was the shooting that proved to be the challenge for Arenas, who missed all five attempts from the top of the key, finishing the course in 51.7 seconds. Nash, however, was up for the challenge, despite minimal practice time. "This morning, you know, we did a bit [of practice]," Nash explained. "But I've been struggling a little bit lately, so I didn't want to really run around and do something. So just kind of figured out that bounce pass and then let it go."
