PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- All the butterflies and cold bumps were gone once the players met on the floor for tip-off. "We were a little nervous during warm-ups, but once we got on the floor for the jumpball, we knew it was time for business," Shawn Marion said. The crowd was standing and cheering as the Suns recieved the first tip of the 2005 NBA Finals. The Suns started the game off by making their first shot by Joe Johnson off a pick from Marion. The entire game didn't go that way unfortunately, as the Heat, who had experience on their team ended up making a huge run in the 3rd quarter that put them up 78-68 heading into the 4th quarter. "We had Shaq in foul trouble, but he was still able to play wtih 5 fouls and played very smart," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said.
The Heat were finally able to score after having a 6 missed field goal drought late in the 3rd quarter. Eddie Jones' putback with 11:31 to go put Miami up 80-68 in the 4th quarter. Joe Johnson helped spark a mini 7-0 Phoenix run after makign a 3-point basket to move Phoenix within' 5 points at the 9:43 mark. Amare Stoudemire started to forget about his 2/12 start during the game after scoring 6 straight points for Phoenix that kept them within' 85-81 and gave him 8 points for the quarter. He then was able to tie the game up at 87-87 after draining two free throws with just over 6 minutes to play. Eddie JOnes converted on a 3-point play after Nash delivered his 5th foul and Jones was able to put Miami up 95-91 and Coach D'Antoni inserted Barbosa back in to save Nash for the whining minutes.
Nearing the 4-minute mark with the Heat up 95-93, Alonzo Mourning tried to tip-in a missed shot by Damon Jones and after missing the first tip, he went up again and failed on that attempt. He then grabbed the rebound and went up to dunk the ball, but Stoudemire met him at the top and swatted the ball out of bounds that electrified the crowd with his blocked shot. Stoudemire then came back down the other end and finished what he started by recieving the ball under the goal and dunked on Mourning to tie the game back up at 95-95. Christian Leattner knocked down a pair of free throws to put Miami up 101-97 at the 2:09 mark. They gained this lead with Shaq on the bench with 5 fouls.
Marion drove inside and went up strong, but was fouled by Laettner and was sent to the line for free throws. He made both shots, but Phoenix still trailed 103-101 with 1:01 left to play. Joe Johnson ran a pick and roll with Hunter who was wide open under the goal. He recieved the ball, but ended up blowing the layup and the Heat grabbed the rebound with 30.2 seconds left. The Suns didn't foul and the Heat ran as much clock as possible. Eddie Jones went inside to Mourning who was quickly doubled by Marion, but Marion collapsed on defense and left Jones open on the wing. Alonzo passed it back out to Jones and he nailed the three to put the Heat up 106-101 with 7.6 secs left and the Suns used their final timeout of the game. Phoenix for the quick 3-pointer with Johnson running a off a screen from Stoudemire and taking the shot from the top of the key, but it rimmed off the frontend and Miami grabbed the board to run the clcok out.
SUNS HEAD COACH MIKE D’ANTONI
"We had a great chance of winning the game, but couldn't connect on key plays down the stretch. We had quite a few players "off" tonight and they weren't putting up their regular numbers that we usually get from them. Another thing that hurt us was our shooting from the outside. We shot just 4/16 from downtown and those aren't our everyday numbers."
SUNS GUARD STEVE NASH (16 PTS, 11 ASSTS):
"This game was just a learning experience for us. I knew that they we were going to be a little nervous no matter how much coach talked to us before the game and even though some of us didn't want to admit it, you could see it in us. We played good overall though despite being nervous and we got Shaq in foul trouble early on. There were a couple of mistakes we had late in the game that really cost us, but we have a chance to bounce back in Game 2 and get our homecourt advantage back."
SUNS FORWARD/CENTER AMARÉ STOUDEMIRE (26 PTS, 9 REBS):
"I'm pretty disappointed that we lost this game because I think it's key for us to win the first game. I wasn't able to come through early on, shooting bad from the field, but my 4th quarter production wasn't enough to help us win the game. I think what made it tough for us was the fact that we were so use to playing the Rockets and forgot who we were playing. That 7-game series really messed with our minds mentally because we were so use to having a certain game plan. We should win Game 2 because I know coach will make some adjustments."
HEAT HEAD COACH STAN VAN GUNDY
"This was a big victory for us tonight and we had alot of unsung heroes out there with Shaq in foul trouble. I was deciding on letting him come back in late in the game, or keeping him on the bench and after I saw how well Mourning was playing, I had no reason to take him out. Having Mourning out there gave Shaq more rest for Game 2 and we will really need that with the Suns fast pace running game."
HEAT GUARD DWYANE WADE (22 PTS, 7 REBS, 9 ASTS):
"With Shaq in foul trouble, the team as a whole stepped up down the stretch and if we can continue that kind of production from the team, we can definitely win this series. Damon, Eddie, Haslem and Mourning really showed what they had in them tonight and without those players playing the way they did, we probably would be as happy as we are right now about winning the first game. We have a long way to go so it's not time to celebrate."
