The Spurs really suffer from not having a bench. A couple of fouls on CP3 or Dwight and they become a really poor team.

Chicago will be up there again this season. Rose can be unstoppable at times and Parker is fast becoming a star.

He really could. Especially when you think that Kyrie Irving was the top scorer last season with only 24.8 ppg.

I wouldn't rule out Bradley Beal either. The points just add up quickly once he gets hot from downtown. :D

Wizards release Brewer and Williams, but Pau Gasol rejoins

Image

After only three games of the 2015-16 season Wizards general manger Steve Kerr has decided to release veterans Ronnie Brewer and Marvin Williams. The pair hadn't featured in the games against Cleveland or Boston during the past week. Williams was part of the title-winning team that beat Oklahoma City in six games back in June. Brewer on the other hand had only recently signed with the Wizards. Both of them were seen as role players and clearly Kerr felt that his team already had enough depth, with the likes of Shannon Brown and Alonzo Gee settling in nicely to their new surroundings.

The biggest news of the day was the return to Washington of former Lakers and Grizzlies big man Pau Gasol. The 35 year old Spaniard surprisingly decided to leave the Grizzlies over the Summer to test his value in free agency. Teams were apparently put off by the salary he was asking for and by the time the new season had started he was still without a team. It was at this point that Steve Kerr contacted his representatives to gauge his interest in signing for a smaller salary, but with the chance to win another ring. After a few days of deliberating Pau finally accepted the offer.

Gasol's first stint with the Wizards ended in bad spirits after he requested to be traded at the trade deadline in 2014. He had arrived in Washington in December 2013 as part of the deal that saw Rudy Gay head to Toronto. The Raptors received Gay, Patrick Patterson, Tony Allen and Jason Maxiell in exchange for Gasol, DeMar DeRozan and two first round picks. In hindsight it was pretty poor deal for the Raptors as the 2014 first round pick they sent to the Wizards ended up being the first overall pick and allowed them to draft Toronto native Andrew Wiggins. The other draft pick that the Wizards received in the deal was used as part of the package sent to Sacramento to land DeMarcus Cousins. And on top of that Patterson left after only a few months to sign a big money deal with the Lakers.

Being stuck behind Cousins and rookie Nerlens Noel in the rotation led Gasol to seek a trade after barely two months with the Wizards. He got his wish though as Memphis gave up the expiring contracts of Kris Humphries and Wayne Ellington to acquire the player who they had themselves traded to the Lakers in 2008. Pau got to be a starter again and was able to play alongside his little brother Marc. It's uncertain as to why he eventually left the Grizzlies, but the Wizards will be glad that he did. His scoring ability and veteran experience will give their bench added bite. He signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.

With Gasol on the team, Kerr also decided to send rookie big men Lucas Madsen and Alonzo Johnson to the Iowa Energy in the D-League to gain some experience. Both prospects are viewed as long term and will have time to develop into NBA players.

Blockbuster four-team trade boosts playoff hopes in Sacramento

Image

After nearly a decade of missing out on the playoffs, the Sacramento Kings have finally given their fans hope that they could be in for some post-season games this season after a series of roster-strengthening moves. Firstly, they sent two draft picks to the Bucks on draft night in order to acquire wing scorer OJ Mayo. Soon after that they re-signed guard Marcus Thornton on a three year extension to be their sixth man. Now they have arguably made a bigger move by landing big man Brook Lopez from the Nets.

The complicated four-team deal sees Sacramento receive center Brook Lopez, Lavoy Allen, Kevin Parrom and the Lakers' 2016 first round pick. Brooklyn acquire veteran big men Andrew Bynum and David Lee. Philadelphia receive Patrick Patterson, JJ Hickson, John Dawson, Gerald Wallace and the Nets' 2016 first round pick. Whilst the Lakers acquire highly rated guard Andrew Harrison and Jan Vesely. Each team will feel that they came away with what they wanted after this trade.

-----

Brooklyn's billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov apparently lost patience with his team after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Pacers last season and poor early season form this season. The Nets have only won four of their first fourteen games this season and currently find themselves dead last in the eastern conference standings. Clearly all-star point guard Deron Williams is central to the team's plans as he signed a four year $80 million extension last month. With both Lopez and Wallace on expiring contracts, this trade secures the future of the Nets for a further season and gives them a stronger frontcourt to combat the likes of Washington, Detroit and Chicago.

Bynum and Lee both have two years left on their contracts and have developed good chemistry together playing with the 76ers over the past couple of years and should do well alongside Deron. Bynum has championship winning experience from his time with the Lakers and has shown that he can be one of the most dominant big men in the league when on form. If this move doesn't change their fortunes before the trade deadline arrives, expect the Nets to use the enormous expiring contract of Joe Johnson as a trade piece to bolster their roster further.

The Lakers are in the middle of a transitional period at the moment with legend Kobe Bryant likely playing in his final NBA season. Star big man Kevin Love signed a five-year $100 million extension last season and is very much ready to take over as team leader as soon as Kobe departs. Apart from those two though there isn't a whole lot of quality on their roster. Bringing in a highly talented prospect like Andrew Harrison is a great move for them and will hopefully go some way to filling the inevitable hole left by Kobe. The decision to get Harrison whilst Kobe is still playing is a smart one as the veteran can help mentor the Kentucky graduate and groom him as his heir.

In the short term this deal also makes sense because the Lakers will no longer have to rely on aging Spaniard Jose Calderon to run their offense. Harrison will inject some youthful spirit into their team and could be an all-star in the future. The Lakers will definitely be looking to build a new team around Love and Harrison and by traded Patterson they have opened up a bit more cap room to spend at the end of the season. Kobe's contract will come off their books if he does retire and the Lakers could be a huge player in the free agent market. One name which clearly stands out as a target for them is Kevin Durant. He is yet to commit to a new deal with the Thunder and could test the free agent market. You would assume that the Wizards would be monitoring that situation as well though.

Philadelphia management seem to have finally bitten the bullet and decided to make a significant roster change after three successive years of absolute failure in the playoffs. They have won over 160 games in the three seasons and each time they have failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs. Now they have freed up some cap room by getting rid of Bynum and Lee. This deal lands them established big men in Patterson and Hickson, who are on decent salaries. Hickson has a team option for next season. Gerald Wallace makes this deal good for the 76ers because he replaces David Lee and has a year less on his contract. He is getting older now and may retire at the end of the season, but for now he is still a solid role player.

The best pieces that Philadelphia get in this deal are easily rookie John Dawson and that 2016 pick. If the draft were held today that pick would be a top two pick. The 76ers will be hoping that the Nets' form doesn't improve before the end of the season. John Dawson has been labelled as the next Klay Thompson. He was selected by the Kings with the 9th overall pick this year and Philadelphia will be hoping he lives up to the hype. He is deadly from the perimeter and could be a perfect sixth man for the 76ers in his rookie season. After a 5-11 start though he will have to help them improve to reach the playoffs once again.

The Kings are all in for a championship this season after potentially acquiring a key piece of the puzzle in Brook Lopez. The productive center is averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds this season and should be key for the Kings. A partnership with Derrick Favors is a very exciting prospect for their fans and will help combat the likes of Oklahoma City. Those two will combine with two other recent additions who are looking to finally find their place in the league, OJ Mayo and Derrick Williams, to form an intriguing starting five combination that also includes guard Isaiah Thomas.

Obviously Oklahoma City and Portland are still the two favourites to make the conference finals, but Sacramento have the talent to reach those heights if they can gel together quickly. They have started the season well with an 8-6 record and should now be even stronger. They have veteran Marcus Thornton as a solid sixth man to give them bench scoring.

I think the Lakers are the big winners in the long run with Harrison and who knows, maybe even Vesely can live up to his draft position.

Especially if they use their cap space to sign Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond next season.

A couple of big name free agents added to a core of Kevin Love and Andrew Harrison would make them contenders again pretty quickly.

I'm happy with how the Kings made out on the deal. Harrison's the only huge loss I think. Getting some real size and offense in Lopez instead of Hickson next to Favors helps, and extra 1st rounders are always a plus.

Nice to see Cousins with some higher scoring games, even though you probably don't need him to score with Beal and Wiggins around. Wall's still doing it all too.
