Greg Oden signs with Detroit Pistons
16 August 2012

Greg Oden, the first overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft, decided to sign with the Detroit Pistons overnight in what he has described as 'the start of a comeback plan'. The former Ohio State Buckeye and Portland Trailblazer has experienced an injury plagued introduction to the league and has played in just 82 games over the past five NBA seasons. He missed 2007-08 because of injury, played as a rookie in 2008-09, and played his last NBA game in 2009-10.
Oden's frail physical condition has been the main reason that most NBA teams have been reluctant to enter into contract talks with him. That did not stop the Pistons from courting him with the team seeing Oden as an intriguing reclamation project. Standing at 7 feet tall, Oden is an imposing presence in the paint and particularly on the defensive end. During the 2009-10 season, Oden averaged 11.1 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.3 bpg before succumbing to injury. Oden has since been through numerous attempts at rehabilitation.
Oden never played another game for the Blazers but earlier this year has since seen the same German surgeon as seen by the LA Lakers Kobe Bryant and NBA free agent Gilbert Arenas. The Pistons hope that they can bring Oden back slowly and will have a big body to come off the bench in the worst case scenario. However, the organization is optimistic that in the best case scenario, they will have one of the best defensive players in the league. The team has set a goal for Oden to start training with the team as soon as possible and have him playing in the new year.
"We are very excited about signing Greg," GM Joe Dumars said yesterday, "His skills fit in with what Detroit Piston basketball is about. I want to put this franchise back on the right path by building the best defensive team in the league but also an exciting team on the offensive end. We are wary about his health and we are going to make sure that he makes a full recovery before resuming basketball."
Oden revealed that he was thinking about holding off his comeback plans for a little while but was tempted by the Pistons' offer. He thought that the organisation sounded like they cared about his health outlook as much as for his career outlook. He also noted that the team only offered a one year deal at the league minimum so that he could reevaluate how he felt at the end of the 2012-13 season.
