Some very intriguing matchups in the West, really bad for you that you will have to go the toughest way despite being 1st as the Lakers and Thunder kind of struggled during regular season, but are always tough to play.

Will be interesting to see how you can contain Paul, he's basically head and brain of the Hornets.

Houston Rockets 110-93 New Orleans Hornets

Image Image
Kevin Martin posterizes David West. | Trevor Ariza led New Orleans in scoring.

The Rockets got off to a fast start, outscoring New Orleans 32-22 in the first quarter. Kevin Martin had a slow start going only 2/7, but he would finish with 29 points on 10/19 shooting. For New Orleans, David West began by making four out of his first five shots, en route to 10 first quarter points.

The second and third quarters were pretty even; Houston's lead would only grow as big as 13, and New Orleans would approach to within six. A big hamper for New Orleans was their struggles at the free throw line. They shot 14/20 (70%) from the line, while Houston shot 28/30 (93%). Houston also did a good job patrolling the paint, as they accumulated eight blocks as a team. Houston's bench also scored 33 points.

In the fourth quarter, the Rockets were able to pull away and their bench was able to keep the Hornets at bay in garbage time. Houston shot 47% from the field while New Orleans shot 43%. The Rockets got good contributions from Yao Ming (17 points, eight rebounds) and Kyle Lowry (14 points, eight assists). Trevor Ariza led the Hornets' futile effort with 25 points, and West finished with 20 points. Chris Paul struggled, shooting only 6/20, but he notched a double-double of 15 points and 13 assists.

Key Performers:
Rockets:
Kevin Martin - 29 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 10/19 FG, 3/6 3P, 6/6 FT
Yao Ming - 17 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 7/10 FG, 3/4 FT
Kyle Lowry - 14 points, 8 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 5/8 FG, 1/2 3P, 3/3 FT
Patrick Patterson - 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3/5 FG, 4/4 FT
Courtney Lee - 10 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 3/5 FG, 1/1 3P, 3/3 FT
Shane Battier - 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2/6 FG, 1/3 3P, 4/4 FT

Hornets:
Trevor Ariza - 25 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 10/19 FG, 2/3 3P, 3/4 FT
David West - 20 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 8/13 FG, 4/5 FT
Tyler Honeycutt - 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 7/10 FG, 1/2 3P, 1/2 FT

Houston Rockets 114-83 New Orleans Hornets

Houston's bench has gotten much burn these first two games. | David West led New Orleans's hopeless charge.

Things could not have gone worse for the New Orleans Hornets in this one. It was a runaway game from the start as the Hornets shot less than 30% from the field in the first quarter. David West and Chris Paul were the only productive players for New Orleans, as they had 25 points, 12 rebounds and 16 points, eight assists respectively. However, Paul was plagued with foul trouble in the second half.

Once again, a hamper for New Orleans was their free throw struggles, as they shot just 9/17 in comparison with Houston's 18/19. The Rockets destroyed the Hornets on the boards 59-40 and had 29 assists compared to their 16. The Rockets shot 46% from the field, while the Hornets shot a mediocre 40%.

Kevin Martin top scored once again with 33 and grabbed four rebounds. Patrick Patterson led Houston's bench effort with 13. The Rockets had seven players score in double figures, as they are now hopeful that they can take care of business on the road in New Orleans.

Key Performers:
Rockets:
Kevin Martin - 33 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 10/19 FG, 2/4 3P, 11/11 FT

Yeah it will be a tough road ahead no matter who wins that series. As you can see from the first two games, taking Chris Paul out of the picture makes the Hornets crumple. Hopefully we'll be able to keep that up so we can sweep them. (Y)

Whoa, the Bobcats in the playoffs. Damn you Jordan for dismantling that playoff roster back then.

What would be the status of next year's draftees? Will you transfer us to the next story?

And Ariza continues to shoot bricks.

Stress Fracture, yeah the Bobcats here are actually much more fortunate than the ones from real life. As for Ariza, he's certainly living up to expectations.

I should hopefully be updating more frequently now that I have acquired my academic rhythm. Expect a couple of updates within the next few days, both from this story and my new one. :)

(63-19) Hive Destroyed [4-0]

Postby Axel The Great on Fri Sep 13, 2013 4:52 pm

Houston Rockets 111-98 New Orleans Hornets

Image Image
Kevin Martin went off for 36. | David West tried his luck at a leadership role.

The Houston Rockets blew the game open right from the get-go, hitting the ground running with an 18-6 run and exploding for 40 first quarter points. Kevin Martin had a 36-point outburst on 12/20 shooting, and Yao Ming had a double-double of 16 points and 12 boards. However, it wasn't necessarily a walk in the park all the way for the Rockets, as they racked up 18 turnovers which, at times, gave New Orleans a small sliver of hope at trimming the lead.

For New Orleans, David West top scored with 23 and grabbed 13 boards. Chris Paul scored 17 and dished an uncharacteristic four assists. Even though New Orleans feasted on Houston's constant turnovers, they were ultimately downed by Houston's 9/21 three-point shooting. With this loss, New Orleans is currently facing elimination, and a very demoralizing one at that.

Key Performers:
Rockets:
Kevin Martin - 36 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 12/20 FG, 3/8 3P, 9/9 FT
Yao Ming - 16 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 7/13 FG, 2/3 FT
Patrick Patterson - 13 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 5/9 FG, 3/3 FT
Goran Dragic - 10 points, 2 assists, 4/7 FG, 1/2 3P, 1/2 FT

Hornets:
David West - 23 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, 11/20 FG, 1/4 FT
Chris Paul - 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 8/13 FG, 1/1 FT
Trevor Ariza - 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 6/14 FG, 1/4 3P, 1/2 FT
Emeka Okafor - 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 4/8 FG, 3/4 FT
Jarrett Jack - 10 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 4 steals, 3/6 FG, 2/3 3P, 2/3 FT
Tyler Honeycutt - 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 4/16 FG, 2/2 FT

Houston Rockets 113-102 New Orleans Hornets

Courtney Lee provided a valuable contribution off the bench. | Kyle Lowry ignited for five triples.
Image Image
Chris Paul had 14 assists, but could New Orleans have benefited from more shots from him? | David West with another double-double

As New Orleans fans would have you believe, this game was for their Hornets to lose! It seemed as though the Hornets had all the hope in the world, but it was crushed by... no, not Kevin Martin. Kyle Lowry had a scoring outburst of 23 points, scoring five out of six three-pointers, and dished out 10 assists.

"Every time it seemed as though we were closing the gap, [Lowry] would score a backbreaking three to continue to slam the door on us," a disheartened Chris Paul told the press after the game. Paul had a double-double of 16 points and 14 assists, shooting 5/10 from the field. He's likely to draw criticism for not shooting enough.

New Orleans pulled within six at one point, but the Rockets were able to hold on. Martin scored a game high 28 points to aid Lowry's sudden outburst and closeout a sweep of the Hornets.

Houston's overall depth, and the fact that they had a leader in every game, was what dictated the complexion of this series. Houston shot 10/19 from downtown, which was a factor that also proved instrumental towards the sweep. On the other side, the Hornets' lack of leadership and free throw shooting (15/25 this game) hampered their ability to at least take one game. Houston moves on to the second round and will face the winner of the Los Angeles Lakers-Oklahoma City Thunder series.

Key Performers:
Rockets:
Kevin Martin - 28 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 11/22 FG, 1/4 3P, 5/5 FT
Kyle Lowry - 23 points, 10 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 9/11 FG, 5/6 3P
Courtney Lee - 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 5/9 FG, 2/2 3P
Luis Scola - 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 6/9 FG
Yao Ming - 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, 5/10 FG
Patrick Patterson - 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 4/7 FG, 2/3 FT

Hornets:
David West - 17 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, 7/16 FG, 3/3 FT
Trevor Ariza - 17 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 8/19 FG, 1/1 3P
Chris Paul - 16 points, 14 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 5/10 FG, 1/3 3P, 5/9 FT
Emeka Okafor - 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 5/8 FG, 4/5 FT
Jarrett Jack - 11 points, 4 assists, 2 steals, 5/8 FG, 1/2 FT

Packers:
Roy Hibbert - 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block, 9/13 FG, 2/2 FT
Danny Granger - 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 4/11 FG, 12/15 FT
Carl Landry - 19 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 4/7 FG, 11/12 FT

I didn't know Green Bay decided to join the NBA.

Anyway, it looks like this was a pretty easy series. Personally I'd like to see a Lakers/Rockets matchup. I'd love to see how many buckets are had between a Kobe "Black Mamba" Bryant and Kevin "Kobe in 2k" Martin matchup.

Its_asdf, great catch! That's what happens when you hastily type a post.

The series was easier than I was hoping for. Normally I have a tough time limiting Chris Paul's production, but he was rather mediocre in this series. I'm also hoping for the Lakers; they should be much easier to beat than the Thunder. (Y)
