NEW YORK, May 1, 2008 – Kevin Durant of the Seattle SuperSonics is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the 2007-08 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year, the NBA announced today.

Durant received 90 first-place votes (545 points) from a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Memphis’ Mike Conley finished second with 390 points and Chicago’s Joakim Noah finished third with 146 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

Drafted with the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Durant averaged a rookie- and team-high 21.2 points – 6.7 points higher than any other rookie – to go along with 7.5 assists and 3.0 assists in 82 games (all starts). Durant was the only rookie to lead his team in four statistical categories, including points, assists, blocks and steals. He is the first SuperSonic player to win the award.

Durant was named T-Mobile Western Conference Rookie of the Month for every month of the season (November-April). Durant represented the SuperSonics in the 2008 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam, finishing with 36 points.

The Eddie Gottlieb Trophy is named in honor of Eddie Gottlieb, one of the NBA’s founders who coached the Philadelphia Warriors to the NBA championship in 1946-47.

What an effort by Garnett during the last 2 games for the Celtics, averaging 44.5 points and 15 rebounds  . Without him they would be eliminated already. Your going to have tough time with the Detroit, but as the Pacers proved that they are vulnerable getting the series to 7 games and even then they lost by only 1 point.

Yeah, you guessed it correctly... Penny played great in Game 5 and hopefully he can make such contributions in the next round...

You're right.. KG put up huge numbers for the Celtics.. Detroit will be much tougher than the Bulls, hopefully I can beat them and advance to the next round...

NBA Playoffs 2008: Where Amazing Happens!
Conference Semifinals Previews

Image

NEW YORK (AP) -- The first round of eliminations are over. The Top two seeds in the West have been eliminated. The Phoenix Suns, who had home court advantage throughout the postseason have been eliminated in 6 games by Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers. The other upset was the Dallas-Sacramento series where the 2007-08 Most Improved Player Kevin Martin and the Kings, sent the Mavericks to another first round exit in just five games.

Meanwhile on the east coast, all top four teams have advanced to the next round. LeBron James led the Cavaliers to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Bulls while the No. 3 Bobcats finished off the Magic in 6 games. Ironically, the East's top two teams Detroit and Boston were pushed to the limit by their opponents as both of their respective series went to a decisive Game 7, which they eventually won.

Games will get even more exciting and intense from here on. Sixteen teams put their championship dreams on the line, eight have been eliminated and eight remain. It's win or go home in the NBA.

Here are the Conference Semifinals match-ups:

--------------------

EASTERN CONFERENCE

1 Image DET (51-31)
4 Image CLE (46-36)
(CLE won season series 3-1)

    Key Matchup:
    R. Hamilton - 24.0 PPG | 7.4 AST | 2.43 STL
    M. Redd - 21.4 PPG | 4.0 AST | 1.89 STL
Detroit was down 3-1 against the 8th seed Pacers and everyone thought that it would be an upset. But Rasheed Wallace and the Pistons regrouped and managed to win the final three games to win the series and advance to the East semis. They are set to face the LeBron James led Cleveland Cavaliers who had plenty of rest after finishing the Chicago Bulls in 5 games. If last year's conference finals series between these two teams is an indication, then this could be the makings of another classic.

--------------------

2 Image BOS (50-32)
3 Image CHA (47-35)
(Series tied at 2-2)

    Key Matchup:
    R. Allen - 23.7 PPG | 4.3 REB | 10.6 AST
    J. Richardson - 23.8 PPG | 6.2 REB | 6.7 AST
Like the Pistons, the Boston Celtics had to overcome adversity in the first round. The Wizards had a 3-2 lead in the series and facing elimination, Kevin Garnett put up incredible numbers in the final two games to get his Celtics over the hump. Meanwhile, the Charlotte Bobcats who reached the playoffs for the first time in franchise history showed everyone that they are for real as they beat the Orlando Magic in six games. Their young core has to take it to another level if they are to advance further in the playoffs.

--------------------

WESTERN CONFERENCE

4 Image DEN (48-34)
8 Image LAL (43-39)
(LAL won season series 2-1)

    Key Matchup:
    A. Iverson - 26.0 PPG | 3.5 REB | 7.8 AST
    K. Bryant - 33.3 PPG | 4.2 REB | 11.0 AST
The Denver Nuggets advanced to the Western conference semis by defeating their division rival Utah Jazz. And no one could be happier than Carmelo Anthony who has sacrificed individual stats for the greater good of his team. Meanwhile, the morale among the Lakers is at an all-time high after they scored an upset over the top seeded Phoenix Suns. Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol have been playing great basketball and they know the formula to beat the Denver Nuggets.

--------------------

3 Image SAS (49-33)
7 Image SAC (45-37)
(SAS won season series 3-1)

    Key Matchup:
    M. Ginobili - 23.3 PPG | 6.1 AST | 1.86 STL
    K. Martin - 27.4 PPG | 10.0 AST | 1.20 STL
The Spurs took another step towards defending their championship but it was a hard one as the LA Clippers took them to the limit. But eventually, Tim Duncan and company took care of business and will now face-off against the surprising Sacramento Kings. The Kings squashed the hearts of the Dallas Mavericks after eliminating them in a mere five games. The 2007-08 Most Improved Player Kevin Martin has even elevated his game to the next level and he will have to continue his great play for Sacramento to score another upset.

NEW YORK, May 6, 2008 – Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the 2007-08 NBA Most Valuable Player presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today.

The 11-year NBA veteran totaled 1,105 points, including 82 first place votes, from a panel of 126 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five for third, three for fourth and one for each fifth-place vote.

Rounding out the top five in voting for this season’s award were Boston’s Kevin Garnett (889 points), San Antonio’s Tim Duncan (670 points), Cleveland’s LeBron James (438 points) and Phoenix’s Steve Nash (60 points).

Bryant finished the season ranked second in the league in scoring at 28.1 ppg, having shot .469 from the field, .867 from the free-throw line and .346 from three-point range. In addition, Bryant added a career-high 10.6 assists (1st in the league), 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals per game and 1.8 blocks per game. The 6-6 guard willed the Lakers to the eight and final playoffs spot in the Western Conference (43-39, .524). The Lakers have just advanced to the next round after beating the Phoenix Suns (56-26, .683), who held the league's best regular season record.

Bryant is the youngest player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points and the 16th player in league history to tally 21,000 points and 4,000 assists. This season, Bryant moved past 12 players on the all-time scoring list, including Hall of Famers George Gervin, Bob Pettit, Walt Bellamy and Hal Greer, to 24th all-time. Bryant was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Month three times (Jan. 14, March 3, April 7).

The NBA MVP trophy is named in honor of the late Maurice Podoloff, the first commissioner of the NBA who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963.
