What's Next For The Seattle Supersonics?

10-30-2007 - Seattle, WA - With the talks of moving the team to Oklahoma City, the loss of Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen, and the fact that the team has made the playoffs just once in the past five seasons, has dealt quite a bit of damage to the Seattle Supersonics franchise. This past Summer, the team has completely revamped their team in favor of a full-blown rebuilding effort. The first moves made were the replacements of GM Lenny Wilkins and Coach Bob Hill, in favor of former San Antonio assistants, Sam Presti (GM) and P.J. Carlesimo (Coach, famous for being attacked by Latrell Sprewell as coach of the Golden State Warriors).

This was followed by the NBA draft, which saw the Sonics select 19 year old Texas forward Kevin Durant with the second pick in the draft. After that, franchise player Ray Allen was traded with 2nd round pick Glen Davis to the Boston Celtics for guards Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak as well as their fifth pick in the NBA Draft, which ended up being Jeff Green. Following this, their other superstar Rashard Lewis, left the team to play for the Orlando Magic. This left the team's roster looking awful. Even after acquiring expiring contract, and veteran Center Kurt Thomas and a pair of first round picks from the Phoenix Suns for basically nothing, the team looked to be bound for a 60 loss or more season.

ImageImageImageImage
Coach Carlesimo, and the team's three new starters.

Fast forward to now, the Seattle Sonics hope to surprise the league this season, by holding their own and possibly even making the playoffs. Coach P.J. Carlesimo said:
"We are a young team, but we are not a bad team. I am happy with our roster, and I feel that, in a couple years time, we will be serious contenders. All we need is time to develop and gel." All this is easier said than done, but Carlesimo has made a couple of surprising choices with the lineup. Over projected starters Wally Szczerbiak and Kurt Thomas, combo guard Delonte West, and rookie Jeff Green will start, in a small-ball lineup.

Though the team is young, and arguably quite weak, there is some true potential here. While they may not win more than 20 games this year, the young team has nowhere to go but up. Whether they will develop in Seattle, or in Oklahoma City, is the question. They open their season in Denver tomorrow.

Okay, no replies the first day up, which I can understand, since this is my sixth (!) try at a dynasty/association, and my last one was a major flop. However, I will update this anyway in hopes that it is noticed. Here is a long recap of the season opener, but after this updates will be in the form of monthly recaps.

Durant Scores Amazing 43 in Debut, as Sonics stun Nuggets in Season Opener

Denver, CO; October 31st, 2007 - Liam Washburn, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Improbable, unbelievable: are just a couple of words used to describe Seattle's surprise victory over the Denver Nuggets. The Sonics, regarded by many as the worst team in the league, were expected to get blown out by more than 20 in their first game of the year. Led by Kevin Durant's mindblowing game, those critics were silenced.

Durant was having a huge night already, going into halftime with his team holding their own against the superior Nuggets team, and having 19 points with 5 rebounds. The third quarter though, was when he, truly exploded however. Scoring 12 in his team's 16-3 run, he led the young Sonics team to an 8-point lead going into the fourth. That was when the Nuggets decided to strike back though, and though the Sonics continued to play well, that lead slowly evaporated, and the young team found themselves down 2 with 3:14 to go. That was when Delonte West hit a 3, Durant blocked a shot by Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, and then slammed it on the other side. This turned the game around with 2 minutes to go. The young Seattle team played mature basketball far ahead of their years and held on to the small lead to win the game 113-108. Kevin Durant had 43 Points, 8 Rebounds and 3 Blocks on 18-37 shooting in 39 minutes of play.

"It was Kevin's first game in the league, and he was already carrying the team. It is scary how good he is, and it is scary that he is just 19. This guy is going to be a superstar in this league for many years to come", says Nuggets Guard Allen Iverson, who finished with 32 points and 7 assists. Seattle's other rookie, Jeff Green had a modest game, finishing with 10 points and 4 rebounds in 26 minutes. Luke Ridnour had a Jason Kidd-esque game with 14 Points, 13 Assists and 6 Rebounds. New addition Delonte West was also solid with 15 Points, and 7 Assists. On the other side, Carmelo Anthony had 34 points, but aside of Allen Iverson, his teammates provided little help.

ImageRookie Kevin Durant was nothing short of amazing in his NBA debut, scoring 43 points.

The sold-out Denver Nuggets crowd was on their feet all night, and though their home team lost, they showed their support for the young underdog Sonics team. "It was great to have their fans support us. I was shocked when I didn't hear boos from the crowd", says Sonics Forward Chris Wilcox, who had 11 Points and 10 Rebounds. The Sonics will return to Key Arena to face the Phoenix Suns in their home opener, on November 2nd. The Suns, winners of 61 games, will likely give the Sonics a hard time trying to repeat their success in Denver.

Sonics 30 21 30 32 113
Nuggets 31 21 21 35 108

Player of the Game: Kevin Durant: (Seattle) 43 Points, 8 Rebounds, 3 Blocks, 18-37 FG
Leading Scorers: Durant (43) | Anthony (34)

i've been waiting for a solid Sonics dynasty so I can track Durant in his rise to stardom; they've got a cool, spunky 'underdog' team and so far i love the stellar start; this one could be it... GL man (Y)

Thanks for the support guys! Keep the comments (with feedback) coming!

I just finished playing the first month (a whopping 16 games) and because my school flooded, the huge recap should be coming relatively soon. Be sure to realize that, like The X's dynasties, recaps will take quite a while to make, but I hope they are worth the wait!

Okay, so I have decided that I will make and post these recaps over the next few days, as this will be the equivalent of summarizing 16 recaps.

The first part will be brief game recaps with 3 longer recaps for the month's best games, and how the team fared. Then, there will be team and player stats, as well as league leaders. 3rd part is League Standings and Power Rankings. The final section is going to be Race to MVP, Rookie Rankings, Transactions, Rumors, and other fun stuff.

Hope you enjoy. Oh, and to The X:, if you ever visit this, I hope you don't mind me ripping off your recapping style, among others.

November 2007 Recap - Part 1

How The Sonics Fared in November:

The Seattle Supersonics were expected to be utter garbage this season, due to the fact that over half their team was traded for a younger core. They looked bound to be by far the worst team in the league. Despite that, and talks of moving the team, the Sonics managed to finish the month of November with a semi-respectable record of 6-11. While 6-11 isn't exactly something to be proud of by typical standards, it is when you consider everything thats happened. Coach Carlesimo has gone a whole month with the team without being choked by one of his players.

Seattle started by winning 2 of their first 3 games (both road wins), and then after a loss in Memphis beat Golden State for a 3-2 record and their first home win. Talks of Seattle being a surprise team this year died down after a 40 point drubbing versus Detroit, followed by a 22 point loss in Orlando to start a long road trip. The losing continued when the team lost to Miami, but finally ended with a close win in Atlanta.

The Sonics finished the road trip 1-5 however as they lost to Charlotte, Memphis and New Orleans. Their losing streak grew to 6 after a loss to New Jersey, putting the team at 4-9. Then, the Sonics finally caught a break, as Tim Duncan, injured in a prior game, was absent when the Spurs visited the Sonics, so Seattle managed to end the streak with a close win against the defending champs.

This was followed by an exciting game against the Lakers, which after a 17 point comeback, came down to the wire, until Kobe hit a buzzer-beater 3 to win the game. They then followed this up by letting Rashard Lewis's Magic walk all over them in Lewis's first return to Seattle. Fortunately, the Sonics managed to end the month on a high note by defeating the visiting Indiana Pacers 111-105, to finish their first month 6-11. Surprisingly, only Jeff Green and Kevin Durant were consistent that whole month, as most of the minor role players would have a few off nights, then have one really great game before slipping into mediocrity. Right now, only 3 Sonics (find out who in Part 2! A reward to whoever guesses all 3) are averaging double figures.

Top 3 Games

3. Seattle SuperSonics @ Atlanta Hawks

Sonics 25 36 20 30 111
Hawks 31 21 32 23 107

The Seattle Sonics were suffering their first (of what looks to be many) losing streak of the year, and hoped to end it against the weak Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks, however, proved to be a difficult opponent. Atlanta took a 6 point lead after the first quarter, but were completely defenseless in the second, as [b]Chris Wilcox
and the Sonics took control of the 2nd quarter to have a nine point halftime lead. Atlanta fought back in the third, and were up by 2 going into the 4th. However, despite Joe Johnson exploding for 17 of his eventual forty points in the fourth, the Sonics simply wanted to win more, and narrowly edged the Hawks 111-107.

Chris Wilcox has his best game of the season with 25 points, 14 Rebounds and 4 Assists. Also, Hawks forward Marvin Williams did well in the loss with 21 Points and 8 Assists. Unfortunately, his and Johnson's play were not enough for the win, as the rest of the team failed. "Man, I need help out here. I have had *censored* to work with since day 1 here in Atlanta, and I'm sick of it," said Johnson after the game. He was then fined $50,000 and suspended a game by the league for his remarks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Indiana Pacers @ Seattle SuperSonics

Pacers 22 30 24 29 105
Sonics 29 21 31 30 111

The Seattle Sonics managed to end the month with an exciting home win against the Pacers. Starting with a somewhat even first half, the game was close all the way through. It really got exciting in the third. The Pacers pulled out to a 10 point early in the period due to Jermaine O'Neal's dominance over the much smaller Green. Kurt Thomas and Wally Szczerbiak were swapped into the game for Durant (who had 20 points and 7 Rebounds by then) and Wilcox, and surprisingly, it helped. Led by Wally Szczerbiak's hot shooting, the Sonics managed to go on an amazing 27-10 run to finish out the quarter, giving Seattle a 7 point lead. Perfectly fitting the game's turnaround was a block, followed by poster dunk by Jeff Green on Jermaine O'Neal.

The fourth quarter was very closely contested. Whenever Seattle would try to pull away for the win, the Pacers would hit a couple shots to make it close again. Fortunately, the Sonics managed to stop Indiana from coming within less than 5 points, and Kevin Durant's free throws sealed the win. Wally Szczerbiak was the X-factor, scoring 19 points in just 19 minutes of play. (The final nineteen) Despite a strong effort by Indiana's starting five, the Sonics won it, 111-105.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Seattle Sonics @ Los Angeles Lakers

Sonics 20 19 24 25 88
Lakers 22 28 22 17 89

Coming off a lucky win against the shorthanded Spurs to end a losing streak, the Sonics had a new swagger of confidence coming into Staples Center. A fifteen point third quarter deficit should have spoiled it. But it didn't.

Led by the Rookie super-duo of Jeff Green and Kevin Durant The Sonics pulled together a strong run spanning the third and fourth quarters. Halfway through the fourth, the Sonics had managed to cut the lead to 3! A pair of threes by Durant put them up by a point. After some intense basket-trading, the Sonics were up 2 with just 5 seconds remaining. The Sonics knew to double-team Kobe in a clutch situation such as this. The ball came to Bryant, and despite being tightly guarded by Wally and Green, he took a difficult 3 at the buzzer anyway...

And it went in. The crowd was ecstatic. Kobe did his patented fist-pump and walked towards the locker room with a huge smile on his face. PJ Carlesimo looked on the verge of tears. "You know, losing a game like that, even when doing everything right... hurts. But, you gotta respect Kobe, man. That was sick," said Sonics star rookie Kevin Durant, who had 22 points of his own. The Lakers finally had something to cheer about, as before that game they were 4-9.

Solid Update, much better recaps this time. I just wish you could have some pictures, maybe even ones from the internet or something. Otherwise nice work (Y)

Oh my guesses are Durant, Green, and Wilcox.

Good to finally get a reply, and I am also really happy that you actually read (or at least skimmed) the article. And you are incorrect.

As for pictures... well, what can you do? The internet pics really don't look that good, and taking in-game pictures is borderline impossible. Are they really necessary?

Really I'm wrong? If not Wilcox then... West maybe? I don't know this is tough, haha.

I know that you really want people to at least skim the recaps before they see the score, but I really think this works against you. Putting the score first, would give the reader some context of what is going on. I always scrolled down to see the score before I read the recap. And its harder to find than if it was before the recap. A new reader might not try that hard.

Also I think you should separate each game recap with like ------------ or something. This annoyed me to with your Jazz Dynasty. Since you put the score last, and we're all pretty used to seeing it first, it can be easy to get lost with what you're reading. Anyways, I'm just giving you tips and its only my opinion.

Hmmm, Well, for the ---------- thing, do you just refer to the top 3 games, same with the scores? Because the scores are at the top on the brief recaps.

Thats a good idea for the top 3 games though. Clarify it for me, and I'll do it. ;) (Y)

huh? What do you need me to clarify, I'll make a guess though below, haha.

The ---- is for the top 3 games, because thats where you can get lost. And I mean the scores before the long recaps.

Okay, thanks for clarifying, and the advice. I actually had scores at the top in my 2K7 Associations. I guess it was best that way...

How does it look now?

Yup, much easier to follow now. I'd suggest putting team logos in before the long recaps too, but maybe not the yahoo ones again if you wanna mix it up again. actually it doesn't really matter you can use those logos again.

Looking back in your beloved Warriors Association, putting the stats for the top 5 players was great since you didn't have a boxscore. Use the head shots if you want. Keep it up!

Glad you are willing to listen to advice, unlike some users who just say no thats stupid. haha

Team Logos: Can't find any others than the Yahoo logos sadly, and I tried it out and it just looks redundant IMO. I wish NBA.com's logos worked, but they don't for some reason. If anyone has some decent, small logos (were did you get those little ones in your dynasty, and do they come in any bigger sizes?), I would be very grateful.

Top 5 Players: Not totally necessary for this, since the sim engine (which, while vastly improved, is still just so-so) only has a couple players put up decent numbers, even when I intervene. As for head shots, where would I put them? Certainly not in the brief recaps, as that would mess up the flow, and take a long time.

And yeah, you gotta be willing to take advice or else you will just fail. (N)

Man you should learn to infer: Player Headshots with player of the game. And look on espn.com, they have different logos..... Haha, good luck.
and then do top 3, because without a boxscore or at least barebone stats, its harder to follow. (Stats in recaps aren't enough)

Those little ones, eh I'm not sure I got them from someone else, just go to my dynasty hit quote (one of my updates) and and then look at the url, you only have to do it one time, and just changed the ending aka, tor=toronto. you'll see what I mean when you see the url. And no they don't come in bigger sizes. How do they look redundant? lol, they're completly different things.

Honestly, I only post the most interesting lines. Adding the face shots to the small recaps make it awful. (Trust me, I did post preview, and it sucked) And I doubt that many people will stop to read the stats. With the team's record after each game tacked on, it should be very easy to follow.

I will use your logos for the League Leaders and Power Rankings, and hopefully I'll find some others for the Top 3 recaps.

Anyway, is anyone else reading? Please? Throw me a bone guys...
