Despite late Rally, Show lose by 3 in Portland
Las Vegas 90 - Portland 93
This game started out like the Orlando game. The Show went on a huge 16-4 run again and it looked like they were going to run the Blazers right off their own floor.
Too bad the Blazers started deciding to play D.
The Las Vegas team outscored Portalnd 29-23 in the first quarter. But for the next 3 quarters, the Blazers went into a high pressure defense, cutting off passing lanes and contesting all shots (resulting in 14 blocks on the game. Eventually, late in the fourth they caught up and even pulled ahead.
"We went cold and didnt hit anything for a long while" said the team's leading scorer Al Jefferson. "You just can't do that against a playoff team in the NBA. They will catch you, even if it takes the whole game." Despite starting out strong, Jefferson only shot 13-24: a far cry from his usual percentage that had him as the most efficient player in the NBA currently.
Like a true leader though, captain Deron Williams took the team on his back late. He blew by Brandon Roy (commenting after that game that he broke his knees rather than his ankles) for easy layups, he kept making contested 3s (making 4 in the last 2 minutes, singlehandedly keeping the Show in the game). With 3.9 seconds and no timeouts left, the Show were down and everyone knew whose hands the ball was going to end up. With Brandon Roy and Andre Miller, double teaming, Williams couldnt get a last shot off as time ticked away and the Blazers held on for the win.
"It sucks to lose like that. I dont take full responsibility. Those guys were fouling the crap out of me. The refs were just making sure homecourt advantage held true. If i had gotten it off, it would've gone in. I know it, the refs know it, and Brandon and Andre know it. I'll shake their hands. Im not Lebron. But it doesn't mean I'm happy about it." said Williams in his post game interview
"We just have to learn to keep a steady pace. Its much like having a drug fueled week rather than a weekend. If you do all your drugs at the beginning of the week, when you sober up, you're done. You have to space it out to keep the high alive. Theres nothing like a drug frenzy." Coach Raoul Duke commented slyly. "Now, who's holding?"
