2010-11 Season In Review: Part 2

June 21, 2011 - I wasn't terribly fond of how the next leg of the season went. The Miami Cheat, with the exception of a surprising challenge from the Atlanta Hawks, cruised to a championship. Furthermore, after having the 3rd best odds, our Clips fell to 5th! Can't really complain about lottery luck, considering that we got Blake, but it still sucks.

The first round was fairly predictable. Other than the New York Knicks forcing a seven game series, things mostly went according to most predictions. The obligatory boil-over was the Atlanta Hawks recovering from a 3-1 hole to eliminated Derrick Rose and the Bulls. The conference semifinals were far more epic, with all but one series going the full seven games. This saw the Spurs outlast the Rockets in a Texas showdown, the Lakers oust the Nuggets in what may have been Melo's final game as a Nugget and the Heat pull off a "7 game sweep" of the Hawks, much like Atlanta in 2008 against the Celtics. The only "upset" of the round was the Magic avenging their 2010 playoff defeat, taking out the Celtics in six games.

The conference finals saw the two teams who were clearly the best in their respective conferences oust the 2009 finalists in 6 games apiece. Looks like the Spurs weren't done after all! The season ended anti-climatically, with the Cheat taking a commanding 3-0 lead, before conceding a pair of games in San Antonio, then taking their second title in franchise history with a convincing 99-85 game 6 win. LeBron James won Finals MVP. scoring 35 points in the decisive game, which was historic for having an attendance of just 5,764 fans.

We got owned in the lottery. We fell two slots, from third to fifth. Our hopes of getting Perry Jones or Kyrie Irving were dashed, as the Nets are sure to take Jones. With Ricky Rubio likely not coming over, perhaps Kahn should be called Nostra-Kahn-mus for wisely trading away all of their decent point guards. The draft is in two days. Word is, somebody leaked the draft workout results! Keep your eyes peeled!

EXCLUSIVE: Clippers' Workout Reports

June 22, 2011 - Today, via an anonymous source, we here are The Blake Show have acquired the Clippers' reports from some of the workouts. Not all of them were made available however. Among the players brought in were Terrence Jones, Enes Kanter and Andrew Watson.

This game was expected to be won by the more talented Black Team. However, the White team, who called themselves "the NLSC", won this game. Selfish play plagued the Black team, and late first round projected forward Andrew Watson led his squad to victory, going 3-5 from distance in the 12-8 win. Harrison Barnes and Jan Vesely looked awful, while Brandon Knight scored off his quickness and Terrence Jones led his side with 4 points. This game earned Watson another workout with the Clips.

Enes Kanter vs. Ike Diogu

Big man prospect Enes Kanter came in to take on hustling former #8 pick Ike Diogu. This proved not to be a game. Diogu could not stop Kanter, who drilled mid-range J after mid-range J. On the other hand, Kanter "shut down" Diogu, whose lacking offensive repertoire made Kanter look good defensively. Kanter took an 8-1 lead early, but his still raw offensive game began to stagnate, letting Diogu back in. However, he would ultimately outlast the bench warmer for an 11-5 win.

Kanter looked solid, but putting him up against Diogu was regrettable. He should become a solid big man in this league, and his shooting ability could make him a good fit next to Blake Griffin (in a different way than DeAndre Jordan is). However, he is a bit slow, and may be a poor man's version of the recently dealt Chris Kaman...

Terrence Jones vs. Al-Farouq Aminu

Top 3 projected forward Terrence Jones graced us with his presence to take on our lottery pick SF from last year, Aminu Acids. Jones looked great at the start, showing off his ball handling skills that were uncommon for a 245 lb forward and taking an early 4-0 lead. Then, Aminu started to take control of the game. He forced Jones to take mid-range jumpers, which clearly seemed to not be his forte. Jones also had difficulty defending the three-point shot, which Aminu used to get back and eventually take an 8-7 lead. Jones wisely started to post up at the end, but with the game tied at 9, Aminu sank his fourth long range bomb, winning the game.

Terrence Jones was fairly impressive. However, it remains to be seen whether he is a better prospect than Aminu. Either way, he'll likely be gone long before we have a chance to pick him.

Leo Lai vs. Willie Warren

Though he was projected to go in the mid-late lottery, we were intrigued by Hong Kong's Leo Lai's upside and marketing potential (okay, mostly the latter). However, after his workout, we will not be reaching to pick him up. We put him against late second round pick Willie Warren, who may or may not be on the team next season. Surprisingly, Warren destroyed Lai, scoring on 8 of his 12 possessions (3-6 from long range). Lai was decent offensively, but failed to connect on any of his 6 attempts from behind the arc. Lai was exposed today. His reputation as a "defensive stopper" stems from destroying turrible Chinese talent, while his only resemblance to Kobe is this.


All downhill from here...

Andrew Watson vs. Adam Morrison
Watson 11, Morrison 5

Adam Morrison was in the neighborhood, so we asked him to stop by, and play against fellow unathletic, white college star Andrew "The X" Watson. Not being one to decline an opportunity, AMMO jumped (not literally) on it. The X destroyed him. In what was essentially a long range shooting contest, Watson drilled shot after shot from outside with little resistance. On the other side, Morrison made a couple shots. The difference in the game was that Watson played D, while Morrison merely didn't. The X won the game handily, While he didn't show us anything we didn't already know, he would certainly be worth taking in the second round, and may be worth acquiring a late first for.


Adam Morrison will NOT be playing for the Clippers this season.

From the workouts, I'd rank the players coming in:

1. Terrence Jones - Would be hard to pass up, though he likely will not be available. Questionable whether he is a better SF prospect than Aminu but he would be the BPA and has a different skillset. Upside is dubious though.
2. Brandon Knight - very explosive point guard reminds me of Jennings and could be our PG of the future. However, he has potential, but is not NBA-ready, and is not a playmaker.
3. Enes Kanter - A bit too Kaman-esque for my tastes, but he sure is better than Ike Diogu for what it's worth.
4. Andrew Watson - A big surprise. Obviously a reach in the lottery, but worth pursuing. Money from distance, and just seems to "get it"
5. Harrison Barnes - A bit of an enigma. His college career was awful, and his workouts weren't great, but he has the skillset of a potential star.
6. William Sit - Not what this team needs at the point. Brings intensity and energy but is a walking turnover, and is incredibly inefficient offensively.
7. Leo Lai - More like Leo Lie. The guy is all hype.
8. Donatas Motiejunas - Andrea Bargnani with far less range. Do not want.
