Lakers looking for revenge

LOS ANGELES. -- The Lakers might have been just two wins away from capturing the championship against the Celtics last June, but the real margin that decided the series was Boston outrebounding L.A. by 30 over the course of the six games. The purple and gold’s starting frontline of Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol have the height necessary to compete in glass-cleaning scrums above the rim, but as it turns out, rebounding is like runway modeling -- height is only part of the equation. Of course, the battle of the boards wasn’t the only facet of the game that did L.A.’s title hopes in. The other pesky deficiency for the Lake Show was defense – both adjusting to the D being thrown Kobe Bryant’s way by the Boston Stranglers and the defense being implemented by Phil Jackson’s contingent in trying to stop the Big Three and the C’s three-point shooting as a team.

Bryant acknowledged the two problem areas immediately after Game 6. “I think if we’re going to learn anything from this series is that we can’t expect to win a championship by focusing on the offensive end,” Bryant said. “We have to be able to hold people down as well. We’re pretty good at it, but I think that we can be much better.” When asked if getting a healthy Bynum back would be the key to turning those weaknesses into strengths, Kobe conceded that Bynum gives his team “rebounding and a shot-blocker in the middle – he solves a couple of those problems.” The 7-foot, 285-pound Bynum enters training camp at 100 percent after spending the offseason rehabbing from the dislocated kneecap he suffered in January. Just 20-years old, Bynum is improving not just by the day, but by the minute, the step, the breath, the blink. He averaged 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds in the 35 games he played in 2007-08, but was just hitting his stride before going down with the injury as he put up 17.3 points and 12.2 boards in the six games he played after the New Year.

If Bynum does return to form, L.A. trots out 20 feet and 10 inches of men at the starting Three, Four and Five positions with a backcourt that features the reigning league MVP in Kobe and Derek Fisher, a great leader by example, at the point. L.A. is the favorite to repeat as the top team in the West, although don’t expect Bynum’s return to translate to many more wins than the 57 the Lakers racked up last season. In the deep-as-Chicago-pizza West, reaching 60 wins would be like a team hitting the hallowed 70 mark any other year. One thing is for sure, if the Lakers are going to defend their place as the Western Conference representative in The Finals, it’s going to come down to defense.

Frank calls Lopez 'scary athletic' as team ends first week of games

NEW JERSEY. -- Even though Nets coach Lawrence Frank isn't ready to determine his rotation, he liked what he saw from Brook Lopez during New Jersey's first week of action. "I'm really surprised with him and how good he is," D'Antoni said of the 7-0 center, after the team lost 127-100 at Indiana on Saturday. "He can play a lot of systems, but I do think that the way we want to play an open court, that will benefit him as much or more than anybody. He's just -- he is athletic as can be. He's scary athletic, and fast." New Jersey opened its season on the road against Washington. It was Lopez's debut and he racked up 17 points and 14 rebounds but the Wizards won 123-109. Three days later the Nets were playing the first of three home games and defeated Golden State, 118-109, with 20 points and 9 rebounds from Lopez. Then the center chilled out a little, with 10 and 8 against Phoenix (loss 127-98) and against Detroit (loss 106-92).

D'Antoni was also impressed by Ryan Anderson, forward: "I really didn't think of him, because we had so many guys, but he played really well," the coach said. ORLANDO. -- The Orlando Magic today announced that they have signed free-agent forward Austin Croshere. The 6-10, 235-pound Croshere joins the Magic after being waived by the San Antonio Spurs. Now in his 12th NBA season, he has also played for the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks. Croshere was originally drafted 12th overall by Indiana in the 1997 NBA Draft. Last season, Croshere appeared in 11 games with the Bucks, averaging 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 7.0 minutes per game, and in 3 with the Spurs, averaging 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in 7.7 minutes. Love making good early impression with Wolves

MINNESOTA. -- Aside from being tall, Kevin Love doesn't necessarily look like a basketball player. The 6-foot-9 forward has a frame that is a little on the lumpy side. When he gets moving down the court, he doesn't glide so much as he lumbers, elbows out to his sides and head bobbing. Outward appearances alone, including his skin color, may lump Love in with players like Adam Keefe, Nick Collison or even teammate Mark Madsen, but the Minnesota Timberwolves' rookie is showing early in his first week of NBA action that he could be so much more. "Kevin's really underrated right now," Wolves guard Rashad McCants said. "I think they think of him as being undersized and one of those white boys that just has to go in there and bang, but Kevin has a very good finesse game where he can step out and handle the ball and shoot the 3. I'm very impressed." Love is averaging 10.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and .433% from the field in Minnesota's 6 games.

Love may have just turned 20 years old, but he has been fighting the stereotype of the big, slow, white guy for his whole basketball career. He averaged 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds a game in his lone season at UCLA and was acquired by the Wolves in a seven-player, draft-night trade with Memphis that sent USC guard O.J. Mayo to the Grizzlies for Love and Mike Miller. Local reaction to the trade was resoundingly negative, with Timberwolves fans livid that Kevin McHale would let go of the silky smooth Mayo in the deal, but the Timberwolves see Love as a player more comparable to Wes Unseld -- an undersized power forward and one of the best rebounders in league history -- than Brian Scalabrine. "My middle name's Wesley after Wesley Unseld," Love said. "It's just been ingrained in my blood." Love's father, Stan, played in the NBA for parts of four years in the 1970s after being the No. 9 pick in the 1971 NBA draft.

Timberwolves coach Randy Wittman has already started to see that pedigree, pointing to Kevin's basketball instincts that distinguish him from most 20-year-olds. "What he brings on to the floor, it's hard to teach," Wittman said. "Being at the right spot at the right time, those types of things. He has a knack for those things." After one All-America season in Westwood, Love was picked fifth overall on draft night, but the Grizzlies really coveted Mayo. When they offered up Miller in the deal, and also agreed to take the contracts of Marko Jaric and Antoine Walker off Minnesota's hands, it was "a no brainer," GM Jim Stack said. Stack compared him to Atlanta Hawks forward Al Horford, and Love is already showing his quick feet down low that allow him to get great position for rebounds. He can shoot the ball from the perimeter, get out and run the floor and prides himself on pinpoint outlet passes that start fast breaks. There are plenty of questions still to be answered. Love acknowledges that he has weaknesses on the defensive end, and how he will jell with Jefferson as part of a smallish frontcourt is still a point of intrigue. "If there's doubters, I'm going to try my best to prove them wrong," Love said with a shrug. "If there's high expectations, I'm going to try to prove them right and then some. We'll just have to wait and see."

Sixers sign Ruben Patterson

PHILADELPHIA. -- The Philadelphia 76ers today signed guard/forward Ruben Patterson to a contract, according to President and General Manager Ed Stefanski. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed, but a source says that Patterson has signed a 968K deal for 1 year. “We are pleased to add a veteran player with Ruben’s talents and experience to our squad,” said Stefanski. “He is a quality defender who gives us a physical and athletic presence, whether it’s serving as a starter or coming off the bench. Washington shakes up roster

WASHINGTON. -- The Washington Wizards have acquired guards Mike Miller from Minnesota and T.J. Ford from Indiana, with forward Antawn Jamison joining the Timberwolves and center Etan Thomas joining the Pacers, general manager Ernie Grunfeld announced tonight.

Miller, the fifth overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft, holds averages of 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game over his eight NBA seasons with a career mark of 40.3 percent from behind the arc. During the 2007-08 NBA season, Miller increased those averages to 16.4 points and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 43.2 percent from three, his fourth consecutive season with a three-point percentage over 40. Miller was the NBA's Rookie of the Year in 2001 and the Sixth Man of the Year in 2006. The Florida alum was also a member of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Team at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, helping the U.S. clinch a spot at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Ford is a 6-foot guard going into his fifth year in the NBA. He has career averages of 11.6 points per game and 6.9 assists per game. Two of his four seasons were limited by injuries (55 and 51 games). “I think my health is fine,” said Ford, the eighth overall pick in the 2003 draft. “It’s always going to be a question mark every year and every time I step on the court. I understand that. I’m just going to continue to work on my body and do the things to make sure I’m good enough to perform at the highest level every night. I’m excited about this trade to Washington and excited to be going to a team that really wanted me.”

Jamison was drafted in the 1st round (4th overall) by the Toronto Raptors in the 1998 NBA Draft. He was traded to Golden State where he played with current Wizards guards Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes. Jamison played his collegiate basketball at the University of North Carolina where he teamed up with Washington center Brendan Haywood. The Wizards acquired him from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for forwards Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner and the draft rights to Devin Harris, and has career averages of 19.2 ppg. and 7.8 rpg.

Thomas was originally acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks on February 22, 2001 in a trade that included Laettner, Courtney Alexander, Loy Vaught and Hubert Davis in exchange for Juwan Howard, Calvin Booth and Obinna Ekezie. “Etan is a developing big man who has proven he can rebound, block shots and defend in this league,” said Pacers coach Jim O'Brien. “The energy and enthusiasm he brings to the floor every night is contagious, and we’re excited to have him on our roster.”

Bulls sign Malik Hairston

CHICAGO. -- The Chicago Bulls announced today that they have signed free agent guard Malik Hairston. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed but ESPN says that the rookie signed a 1 year, 2.72M deal. Hairston, a 6'6", 220lbs guard out of Oregon played in six preseason games for the San Antonio Spurs and averaged 5.3 points and 4.5 rebounds before being waived by the Texas team. The Spurs originally acquired the draft rights to Hairston from the Phoenix Suns, along with Golden State's 2009 second-round pick and cash considerations in exchange for the draft rights to guard Goran Dragic[/color]. Hairston last played for the Austin Toros, the Spurs affiliate in the NBA Development League.
