2011 All-NBA Teams

Posted by Daryl Morey May 22, 2011 at 12:32 PM
At last, all of the NBA regular season awards are out. The six single player awards and now the All-NBA Teams. Unfortunately, the media didn't think anyone on the Houston Rockets deserved a spot in any of the All-NBA, Defensive, or Rookie teams, and I am therefore writing this in bitterness at this fact.

Let's start with the All-NBA First Team. Derrick Rose and Chris Paul were the two guards named to the team. Rose made a run in the regular season which leave many arguing that he is now the best point guard in the league. Paul had that crown before the season began, and to many Rose still has ways to go before he can surpass him; Paul's all-around game and defense is still superior, not to mention he outstrips him in shooting numbers. Still, both players are true leaders of their respective teams, and are valuable assets when looking to build teams around them. Well-deserved spots for both.

LeBron James and Kevin Durant join them at the forward positions. James, now a three-time MVP, had to make an appearance here; his great all-around numbers make him an excellent asset for the Miami Heat, and of course, he is the reigning MVP. Durant on the other hand was the runner-up MVP, and his second consecutive scoring title makes good reason to be in the All-NBA First Team. For the fourth year in a row, we also find Dwight Howard named the best center in the league. His numbers were superior to that of any other center in the league; the gap between him and the second-best center is just too great. His shot-blocking has turned him into a wanted asset around the league.

And this is where I'm bitter. For the All-NBA Second Team, the guards were Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. Sure, they both have better all-around numbers than our very own Kevin Martin, but Martin outdueled them by a significant margin in their regular season faceoffs. Not to mention Martin's shooting numbers makes Bryant and Wade look like Trevor Ariza. Either way, I see the media's point in putting both above Martin; they are the two best shooting guards in the league right now, and definitely have been valuable assets the past few years. Danny Granger and Josh Smith join those two question marks as they both had breakout seasons, Smith winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award. And next in line, is Al Jefferson, whom was excellent for the Jazz after some injury-riddled seasons in Minnesota.

Martin wasn't going to make the second team? Fine. Why not third team? No. Rajon Rondo and Deron Williams beat him there as well. While they as well have better all-around numbers than Martin, Martin had a huge impact on the Rockets, single-handedly leading them to first place in the Western Conference. That alone should make him worthy of overtaking either Rondo or Williams. But yes, they both put up astronomical assist numbers all season, and that's what the media is after after all, right? Joining them, is Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Brook Lopez. The All-NBA Third team award went to the Atlantic Division this season.

Here are the All-NBA Teams, with their stats:

Moving on to the Defensive teams. No surprise to find top three candidates for the DPOY award on the All-NBA Defensive First Team. Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, and of course, the award winner Josh Smith headline the first team. Joining them is Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. Wade beat his teammate LeBron James to the first team this year, after being outraced there by Kobe Bryant year-after-year. It seems as if the media has finally snapped out of their fetish for Kobe's defense which doesn't appear to exist. It was a long time coming.

In the All-NBA Defensive Second Team, we find James. James' defensive numbers dropped in comparison to prior years; his block numbers were below 1.0, but his steals numbers are a career high. He was still outdone by Garnett and Smith on that end of the floor. Tim Duncan and Marcus Camby also made their appearance, continuing to be well-known for their shot-blocking and protecting the paint. Rajon Rondo and Andre Iguodala were the guards selected, no surprise there really.

So here are the Defense All-NBA teams, the best defensive assets in the league:

And finally, we'll end with the All-Rookie Teams. John Wall and Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin headline the All-Rookie first team. Two athletically explosive players, valuable assets for their respective teams moving forward. Wesley Johnson, Sixth Man of the Year, joins them, while Evan Turner and Ed Davis' appearances raise some eyebrows. Turner and Davis missed a considerable amount of games during the season, but the impact they could have on a team was there.

Finally, Landry Fields headlined the All-Rookie second team, putting up excellent numbers for the New York Knicks, especially in the rebounding category. Al-Farouq Aminu, Ekpe Udoh, Damion James, and Derrick Favors join him. Their numbers are really not anything special (except for the rebounding), but we are yet to see some of these players reach their full potential, and they are likely to become excellent supporting assets for their teams in a few years.

So, here are the All-Rookie teams, as I end this long rant about the some of the most valuable assets in the NBA.

Where the hell is Axel? I'd have preferred for him to write this article rather than Morey. I don't know how many times the word 'asset' was mentioned throughout the entire article. :miserable:

I skimmed through the article and saw a mention of my name. How dare you, Morey, talk about my bricks like that. Especially after you gave me that multiple-year contract a couple of years ago. :shake:

Nobody else is helping out Ray, which is why they're down 3-1. Game Five is a must win for us, though.

Games 5 & 6 will be up this weekend hopefully. :)

Chapter 19 - Sharp Escape

Chapter 19 - Sharp Escape

"If I'm ever gone from work for an extended period of time without asking for vacation, and without calling in, then something is up. Make sure you just keep my "We Bleed Red" blog up to date, alright?" Daryl Morey was remembering the time when his assistant, Axel told him that in the first few days he began to work for Rockets headquarters.

Morey got up from his office and went to go ask the secretary about Axel's absence, "Say, have you heard anything about Axel lately? You are in frequent contact with him, right, so you probably know? I have not seen him since he decided to fly to Dallas to see Games Three and Four. Probably still in Dallas doing god knows what right now."

"I've texted him, called him, but no answer. Maybe he has his phone turned off," the secretary replied, looking concerned. "Ah well, he'll turn up eventually, when he remembers that he has a job," Morey replied, and walked cheerily back to his office to continue his online chatting with Spurs GM, RC Buford, whom he was ridiculing for the Rockets' second round victory over the Spurs.

However, Axel was far, far away from Dallas. In fact, he wasn't even in Texas, much less even in the southern region of the States. Axel was in New York, tied up and knocked out in some warehouse that he'd been to before. His partners, Jerome and Luigi, were tied up alongside him. Each of them were tied up vertically, against a slanted piece of wood.

Axel woke up after being unconscious for a while. He tried moving his arms and feet, but they were each tied to the wood, and what he saw on the floor right below him was a terrifying sight. Two feet below him, was a spinning saw blade, a foot in diameter, with an abundance of sharp, fang-like blades. There were three of them, two others right under the tied up and unconscious bodies of Luigi and Jerome. The blades were turned off, but at any moment, a mafia henchman was capable of turning them on and sawing their bodies in half.

"Oh good, you're awake. The boss wants you to witness the downfall of your puny little Houston Rockets live on television," said someone out of the blue. This made Axel jump, and he looked up and saw a short man (about five feet, two inches tall) in a black tuxedo and black sunglasses looking up at him grinning cruelly. "The fuck do you want?" Axel asked him in anger.

Then, he saw a wide figure come out from a door on his right; it was David Stern. He was smiling, then pulled out a TV remote, and flicked on a TV sitting a few feet away from them. The next hour was agony for Axel, as he watched his Rockets turn the ball over more than a dozen times in game five against the Dallas Mavericks. He watched in disgust at how Jason Terry was being given all of the free throw attempts he desired, and how much Kevin Martin was forcing his way to the paint, taking in a beating from Brendan Haywood and Tyson Chandler, and no whistle.

"You people fucking sicken me. All this just to get payback. And how the hell did you get out of jail, Stern?" Axel broke the long silence as the fourth quarter was about to begin.

Stern laughed. "Simple. When you have tons of money, you can buy pretty much anything to go your way. Our very own Donaghy here bailed me out, and here we are. As for the payback, there's much more to it than that. You see, we've put down three million dollars on this series for the Mavericks to win. We've done everything in our power to make that happen. Joey Crawford is over there doing his job right, and we've slipped a little something into your Rockets' drinks to make sure they don't see the floor well," Stern explained. Donaghy joined them as he was explaining this.

It all made sense. Joey Crawford was calling the game in Dallas' favor, and that substance in his Rockets' drinks explains their turnovers.

"I thought you didn't want anything to do with this idiot after the betting scandal he had a few years ago," Axel said, looking at Donaghy.

"It was a part of the master plan. Sure our plan failed to get the Lakers the championship this season while getting our hands on heaps of cash, but there's still the Heat. We find the Rockets the biggest threat to our plans, and so we're taking them out," Donaghy answered.

As the game was coming to an end, Axel had to watch as Caron Butler put on a scoring clinic; Dallas seemed to have pulled away for good. As the minutes were lessening in the fourth quarter, the wood they were tied up against began to lower, and lower, until they almost touched the saw blades.

With a minute left to go, the saw blades turned on, spinning rapidly and furiously, as if in hunger of cutting something with their sharp teeth. The first body part that would be hit by the blades were... "No! Not the family jewels!" exclaimed Jerome; he had woken up finally after being unconscious too. He looked over at Axel, and muttered, "I told you they were this cruel."

"And so you'll meet a nasty end here, Mr. Axel. These other fine gentlemen who served us for a while will go with you, for betraying us and not fulfilling their orders of killing you in the first place," Stern said, grinning so much that his eyes were almost closed.

Suddenly, Axel felt his left arm have more independence than his right. He looked up, and saw that his left arm had been freed of the rope; apparently the one who tied him up was too lazy to tie him up tightly. Shocked at the luck he had, he took out a handblade from his left pocket, and began to free himself, cutting at the ropes on his right wrist, and his feet. Just as the saw blades were beginning to cut into the wood, he was free, and he jumped past the blades and landed on two feet. The others (now a bunch of henchmen had joined), busy celebrating the fact that Dallas had already won, did not see Axel also use his blade to free Jerome and Luigi. When they turned around, they saw guns being pointed at them, as they were frozen in shock at the turn of events. The wood was cut clean by the blades, and the pieces dropped dully on the floor.

They put their hands in the air as if surrendering, and Stern forced a laugh, which sounded frightened. "It's fifteen of us against three. Who do you think wins?" he asked as they too, pulled out their weapons. What came next was a bunch of confusion; Axel pulled out a smoke bomb, threw it on the ground, and as smoke began to pile up in the air, bullets were fired. Axel heard them ricochet off the walls, some missing him by centimeters. He began to fire at the dark figures trapped in the smoke. He heard a yelp and a dark figure go down right after he had aimed at it, but he didn't bother seeing who it was. He had to escape.

There was a window to their left side, and he pulled Jerome and Luigi with him, as they jumped through it, breaking the glass, falling two stories and landed with a hard thud on the back of a black pickup truck.

"Ah! This is where they've stashed my old Toyota Tundra! Quick, get inside and let's drive away!" exclaimed Jerome, as they scrambled in. Jerome took the driver's seat (he was adept at hot-wiring), Axel took the passenger's seat, and Luigi took the backseat, opening up the back window ready to fire at anyone who followed them. They drove away from the warehouse, wheels screeching as they started.

"You never feel more alive than when you're almost dead," Jerome smiled, clearly relieved to not have been sawed in half. "You're right, man. Close that was. Luckily their most inept henchman was given the job of tying us up," Axel laughed.

Luigi pulled a paper out of his pocket, and handed it to Jerome as they were very far away from the mafia warehouse. Jerome stopped at a parking lot, and began to read the paper. "We're going to have to come back to that warehouse in a couple of days," said Jerome; he said it in a frightened tone.

"Why?" asked Axel. "I picked this up off a table as the smoke was up and gave it to Luigi. That was where the gang always had their plans, second floor in a locked room of the warehouse, written down on a piece of paper. The gang which they bet this series with is headin' over to the warehouse to watch game six, ready to hand over the three million dollars in case Dallas wins," Jerome said.

"And? What do we have to do with that? We've managed to escape death and now we have to look it in the face again? Why can't we fly to Dallas and try to stop any corruption?" Axel asked, puzzled.

"Isn't it obvious?" said Jerome. "This will be our chance to stop corruption. We can't let the mafia get that money; if we do, that means they are getting rewarded for corruption. Plus, who knows if they plan to fix game six as well."

"Oh yeah, and that will be easy. When half of the warehouse wants us dead and there's another gang who has the potential of killing us, how will we get that money and what will we do with it?" asked Axel.

"I have just the plan, but we will have to wait until the day of game six for it to be put into action," said Jerome. "They will go boom."

Game Five Recap
I would've suspected for the original writer, Axel, to have come back, especially on his birthday. But oh well, the show must go on, but it didn't go the way I would've wanted it to.

Dallas was firmly in control all game, getting a hold of an early first quarter lead, forcing turnovers and getting to the foul line. Dallas had 13 steals, forcing 17 Rocket turnovers, and that's what ultimately decided the game. Kyle Lowry had five turnovers, Aaron Brooks had four, and Luis Scola had three. This sloppy ballhandling by the Rockets ultimately turned into easy points for Dallas, as they were able to race out to a 12-point lead in the second quarter, up 58-49 at halftime.

Dallas continued their onslaught of points in the second half, led by Caron Butler. He scored a game high 43 points on 19/28 shooting. He had an answer for everything the Rockets threw at him, as he was able to dodge left and right and convert on easy layups and dunks. Dirk Nowitzki also helped bring the scoring load. Nowitzki had 22 points, nine rebounds, and shot 10/16 from the field, after what has been a poor shooting series for him.

In the third quarter, it seemed as if the Rockets were closing in on the lead, and who knows, maybe they'd have got there if it wasn't for one thing that aroused suspicion by fans in Houston. Jason Terry, who shot a garbage-like 5/23 from the field, was given eight free throw attempts in a span of three minutes, as he converted on 7/8 and finishing 12/14 for the game. "Things like this definitely don't go unnoticed especially by those who watch the game. It's just sickening, the officiating that the league has and I thought that with David Stern gone the officiating would be cleaned up, but I was wrong," a loyal Rockets fan said.

In the end, you have to give Dallas their credit. Houston made another run in the fourth quarter, led by Kevin Martin's team high 36 points, getting to within three points of equalizing the game. Martin penetrated his way into the paint, took beatings from Tyson Chandler, Brendan Haywood, and Dirk Nowitzki, but only had two free throw attempts the entire fourth quarter. "Coach told me to stay aggressive, and I did. The refs just didn't do their part in calling the game right. We can all agree that we are disappointed," Martin said.

However, Butler's career playoff game didn't stop in the fourth quarter. He traded blows with Martin, but Butler eventually got the edge over the Rockets, as the Mavericks pulled away to a 112-103 win. "This is a crucial momentum shift now. Game Six is a must win; it will be difficult to come back here and try to take the deciding game on the road," said Jason Kidd, whom is sidelined with a severe ankle sprain.

Game Six Recap
It just took a giant fourth quarter stampede from the Mavericks to take it. Just one huge 39-28 fourth quarter run, and they were able to advance to the NBA Finals. Dirk Nowitzki exploded for a game high 38 points to go along with 16 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He shot an efficient 18/29 from the field.

For the Rockets, Kevin Martin top scored with 37 points, six assists, and five rebounds, shooting 14/22 from the field. Unlike last game, he had help, with Yao Ming scoring 23 points, nine boards, and swatting away three shots. Yao shot 9/14 from the field, but was held to just one field goal the entire second half. Luis Scola chipped in a double-double of 12 points, 12 boards, shooting 5/11 from the field.

Houston was outclassed on the boards, especially in the second half. Dallas outrebounded them 53-42, and had three players with double-digit rebounds (Nowitzki, Caron Butler, and Tyson Chandler). Jason Terry had a much better game with 22 points, 10 assists, and shooting 9/19 from the field, while Butler had 18 points, 12 boards, two assists and shot 6/16 from the field. Chandler had eight points and 12 rebounds, going 3/4 from the field.

Despite the Rockets' excellent 53% shooting in the second half, they were held to a meager 38% in the second half, while Dallas went full speed ahead with 55%. Nowitzki led a fourth quarter charge which saw Dallas score 39 points in the final period, as Nowitzki eventually knocked in a turnaround jumpshot dagger over Yao with less than 20 seconds remaining to seal the deal.

Dallas now moves on to their second NBA Finals appearance in franchise history, facing the winner of the Heat-Celtics series. "You can bet we're excited. A chance to redeem ourselves after the 2006 letdown. It's nice to take the Western Conference crown, but the NBA crown is what we're after here. There's still a lot of work to be done," said Nowitzki as the Dallas home crowd cheered and gave him a standing ovation as he left for the locker rooms.

Meanwhile, the Rockets were left quiet, and with a disappointed and disgusted look on their faces. "I'm not pointing fingers here, but apparently we just couldn't get it done on the road to force a game seven. I don't think the roster needs a shakeup; improvement will have to come from within," said Kyle Lowry, and right he is. Houston's supporting players had a miserable shooting night. Lowry shot 2/8, Shane Battier shot 2/10, Aaron Brooks shot 2/12, and Courtney Lee shot 1/5.

"I'm not making any excuses here; yes we could have won the series had it not been for the officiating, but I felt that this was a game that we could've taken. The officiating was fair and clean, we just let it slip from our hands. We will come back stronger next year, mark my words, the entire NBA will regret the downfall of this year's Houston Rockets," said Kevin Martin who looked as if he could drown someone in the showers.

And so ends a magical campaign to the NBA title for Houston. They fell short in the Conference Finals to a long-time rival, just like back in '97. Who knows what the future holds for them, but as Lowry mentioned, if there's any improvements to be made, it will have to be from each and every player already in the roster.

Mavericks all the way baby! :headbang:

Shame to see the collapse of the Rockets. Halstead will lead this team to a title (Y)

Wow definitely not what expected, seeing how underrated the Mavs are in 2k11. Caron went nuts.

Hope to see more of the story shortly. :D

In my association, Terry is the beast and Caron is a garbage.(When playing with them)

Anyways, ouch! Tough loss. All these hard wins....we still can't get it into finals.:(

Wow, did not think that there was a team that could stop your run for the Larry O`Brien trophy. Tough loss, but at least against my Mavs. Haven't been following recently, but I checked every once in a while and thought you might go straight to the finals.
