10-2 is a fantastic start to the season, and damn Bledsoe beasted in that sim game. (Y)

Have you thought about changing his release? It's kind of daunting because the game has so many of them, but changing his release could make him a completely different player for you.

Nice win - it's early but you look to be headed for a high seed this year.

Not really. Ideally I want to just find his natural shooting rhythm.

My schedule for 2k has been all over the place in the last few months thanks to RL stuff. So that hasn't really helped me with consistency either.

I'm probably just being too overcritical though. Booker is still averaging 17 ppg (.440/.360/.900) in three minutes less than he was playing per game last season

I have been surprised by the start we've made, especially because I've been trying to work out the bench rotation with all the new guys.

At some point our record will probably even out though (Saying this having just gotten schooled by the Warriors again  )

I always feel like I neglect Bledsoe. I spend so much time trying to get Bender and Booker their points that I often forget Bledsoe. Which is weird because he is easily the best player on my team

I was hesitant to pay Len big money over the off-season. But he really is my most solid player. I can basically count on him to be a 10p/10r guy every night and add 2 or 3 blocks. He flirts with triple-doubles sometimes too.

Funnily enough he is basically averaging the same stats as last season. Just earning $16m more to do so

Wow, the Kings took their squad in a completely different direction here than irl. Too bad your sim team could only muster 65.

They certainly had a little bit of help improving their roster over the off-season. It's a tougher match-up now, but overall they still suck

All I could do was laugh after seeing that sim result. Sometimes this game just makes zero sense.

I was really worried coming into this game because Harden is in insane form (33 ppg). But Iguodala shut him down completely and my overall defense was superb.

Jonathan Jeanne kinda had a breakout game, even if it was mostly in fourth quarter garbage time.

Another incredibly annoying game against Golden State. I cut a 15 point lead down to just 4 with a minute left in the third quarter. But then they went on a bullshit 9-0 run to end the quarter and killed my momentum.

We gave up 33 turnovers to 7. It was so ridiculous to watch given how amazing we've played in the last few games.

Image

As the new year approached, several teams around the league took the opportunity to shake things up a bit. In the past fortnight there have been four trades, involving eight teams.

Perhaps the most surprising move of the bunch was made by high-flying Philadelphia, who traded defensive specialist Nerlens Noel to Dallas in exchange for Justin Anderson and Dwight Powell.

Image

Houston moved to solidify their playoff ambitions by acquiring bench-scoring extraordinaire Lou Williams from the LA Lakers. They gave up the expiring contract of Corey Brewer and a top 3 protected 2018 first round pick.

The Rockets currently sit in third place in the western conference with a 22-11 record. They are mainly in this position thanks to the MVP level form of superstar James Harden. The bearded guard has been on a scoring tear to start the season, averaging an impressive 35 points per game so far.

Adding Williams will give them a flexible four-man guard rotation now alongside Harden, Eric Gordon and Patrick Beverley.

It's an interesting move by the Lakers to trade away their best bench player when they are finally back into playoff contention after a few poor seasons. They currently hold the eighth seed after winning eighteen of their first thirty-three games.

Clearly though they had no intention of signing Williams to an extension beyond this season and felt another draft pick would suit their current window better.

Image

The next deal to take place saw Washington acquire Bojan Bogdanovic and Chris McCollough from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Andrew Nicholson, Johnathan Mosley and a lottery protected 2018 first round pick.

It's a bit of a left-field trade for a team that is in the middle of a rebuild and is currently battling to get close to the playoff race, but the Wizards do need more shooters. They are sitting fourth-from-bottom in their conference after winning only fourteen of their opening thirty-five games.

"Bojan is a very good shooter and a talented overall scorer whose versatility gives us an added dimension as we gear up for the stretch run,'' Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement. "He is a proven starter that will provide us an added boost off the bench and allow us to be creative with our lineups."

Brooklyn have failed to improve their fortunes this season despite spending big on Rudy Gay and J.R. Smith over the off-season. Only newcomers Louisville have had a poorer start to the new campaign than the Nets.

With their disastrous trade with Boston from a few seasons ago still affecting their draft fortunes, the Nets must have felt that giving up a bench player like Bogdanovic in order to get back into the first round was a worthwhile venture.

Image

Perhaps the most interesting move involved Philadelphia sending big men Nerlens Noel and Richaun Holmes to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Dwight Powell, Justin Anderson and two future second round picks.

The Sixers have started the new season brilliantly after their roster building over the past twelve months is bearing fruit. Number one pick Ben Simmons won the rookie of the year award and they also acquired all-star John Wall midway through last season.

The off-season addition of sharpshooter JJ Redick and the continued emergence of versatile big man Dario Saric have also added strength to their team. As has the prolonged health of cult figure Joel Embiid.

After a third of the season they are looking like legitimate contenders to the eastern conference throne. They sit in second spot behind the Toronto Raptors after winning eighteen games so far. Trading Noel could be a move aimed at giving Saric more playing time and also landing an athletic wing in Justin Anderson.

Dallas for their part get another defensive anchor to compete with Willie Cauley-Stein for the starting center spot. It's a move more aimed at the future beyond legend Dirk Nowitzki because they are struggling again this season, sitting down in thirteenth place in the western conference.

Things are looking pretty decent for the Mavericks now. They have a youngish core of Harrison Barnes, De'Aaron Fox, Nerlens Noel, Willie Cauley-Stein, Ben McLemore and Seth Curry to build around once Dirk retires.

Image

Two more teams making a change were Chicago and Oklahoma City. The Bulls acquired Cameron Payne and Joffrey Lauvergne in exchange for Doug McDermott and Jerian Grant.

The Bulls have been looking for a new starting point guard after trading former MVP Derrick Rose in June 2016 and having veteran Rajon Rondo taken in the expansion draft by Louisville over the off-season. Cameron Payne has shown glimpses of promise during his short NBA career, but will he be the answer for Chicago?

They have started the season decently enough and currently hold the sixth seed with a .500 record after thirty-two games.

Oklahoma City do this move simply to add more shooting to their team. Doug McDermott hasn't quite replicated the amazing scoring prowess that he showed in college, but he should still add a perimeter threat that the Thunder sorely lack.

The Thunder are battling away in seventh place in the western conference at the moment and are doing their best to support reigning MVP Russell Westbrook as he tries to guide them deep into the playoffs.

This trade also brings together the Grant brothers, Jerami and Jerian. They are the sons of former player Harvey Grant and nephews of Horace.

Phil Jackson: We''ll explore trade options for Melo

Image

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson has been no stranger to creating headlines since he took over the role in 2014. He did so again today by suggesting that he is very much open to the possibility of trading star forward Carmelo Anthony before the trade deadline passes on February 22nd.

Jackson confirmed in his press conference today that the New York Knicks will begin rebuilding again over the off-season. They have struggled to make the combination of Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Kristaps Porzingis and Joakim Noah a competitive one. The playoffs already look out of reach for another season and star man Anthony has become increasingly unsettled.

"It's just frustrating man", said a dejected Anthony after his side suffered a 22 point blowout loss against the Lakers last night. "I came here to win titles and it just hasn't happened, for whatever reason."

Jackson seemingly responded to those comments today, appearing to lay the blame for the lack of success squarely on Anthony's shoulders. "We've not been able to win with him on the court," said Jackson. "I think the direction with our team is that he would be better off somewhere else."

ESPN are reporting that Jackson met with Anthony this morning and had a constructive conversation about what the future may hold. Jackson reportedly asked Anthony for a list of teams that he would be willing to join. The Knicks will need his approval to execute any trade, due to him having a full no-trade clause.

Early reports suggest that there are five teams that Anthony would accept a trade to: Cleveland, Chicago, Philadelphia and the two Los Angeles teams. It remains to be seen whether any of those teams are actually interested in acquiring the ten-time all-star and can satisfy the Knicks' trade demands.

So with the possibility that Melo may leave the Knicks in real life now a thing, I decided to try something a bit different.

I've come up with three trades that I think work and I figured I'd ask for your opinions (if anyone actually cares :P )

*These trades were done with the thinking that Melo isn't as valuable an asset as he used to be and that the Knicks would be happy to get any value for him*

I also realise that trading Melo to the Lakers or Clippers would make the game a bit harder for myself as they are division rivals.

Trade 1 - Melo to the Sixers

Image

Sixers go all-in for a championship by adding a lethal scorer to an exciting core of John Wall, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, Dario Saric and JJ Redick. They are a little bit behind the Celtics, Cavs and Raptors in the fight for top seed at the moment. But this trade could put them right in contention and create an epic four-way battle for eastern supremacy.

The Knicks would get a solid replacement in Covington, a first round pick and three of their own future second round picks back that Hinkie stole. They could then either try and create massive cap room by dumping the salaries of Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Courtney Lee over the off-season, or just keep those guys and still have enough to sign a max-level player.

Obviously any rebuild would be based around Porzingis and Hernangomez.

Potential Roster Depth

C - Joel Embiid, Roy Hibbert, Tibor Pleiss
PF - Carmelo Anthony, Dario Saric, Dwight Powell
SF - Ben Simmons, Justin Anderson, Anthony Morrow
SG - JJ Redick, Nik Stauskas, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
PG - John Wall, TJ McConnell, Shelvin Mack

Sixers are currently 4th in eastern conference, 30-25 record (4.0 games behind Boston in 1st)

--------------------------------------------------

Trade 2 - Melo to the Lakers

Image

The Lakers haven't made the playoffs since 2013 and are just outside the race for the eighth seed right now. Adding Anthony would give them a boost in their hopes of catching the Spurs and give them a veteran presence amongst a young core.

Los Angeles is probably one of the places where Anthony would actually re-sign.

New York get a good backcourt partner for Derrick Rose in Jordan Clarkson, who is locked in for three years on a decent contract. They also dump the contracts of Courtney Lee and Lance Thomas, which cuts about $17 million in salaries for next season.

Rose/Noah/Deng Bulls reunion also

Potential Roster Depth

C - Festus Ezeli, Timofey Mozgov, Tarik Black
PF - Carmelo Anthony, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr
SF - Brandon Ingram, Lance Thomas, VJ Beachem
SG - Courtney Lee, Nick Young, Justin Holiday
PG - D'Angelo Russell, Brandon Jennings, Marcelo Huertas

Lakers are currently 12th in western conference, 27-29 record (4.5 games behind San Antonio in 8th)

--------------------------------------------------

Trade 3 - Melo to the Clippers

Image

I also figured the Clippers would be a good destination for Melo. They could add him to their core of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan to give themselves more offensive firepower. Even though they are actually one spot below the Lakers right now and an outside chance to miss the playoffs, this trade could actually put them close to the Warriors in terms of talent.

Curry/Durant/Klay/Draymond vs CP3/Melo/Blake/Jordan is a pretty good match-up. Anthony is supposedly good friends with Chris Paul, so he would be likely to re-sign with the Clippers.

There probably isn't as much direct value for the Knicks in this trade. But they would replace Anthony's $27.8m player option with Rivers ($12.6m player option) and Crawford ($14.5m team option), so they could free up enough cap space for two max-level players.

They also get a first round pick that could fall to the lottery if the Clippers fail to improve.

Potential Roster Depth

C - DeAndre Jordan, Marreese Speights, Diamond Stone, Amida Brimah
PF - Blake Griffin, Luc Mbah a Moute, Brandon Bass
SF - Carmelo Anthony, James Johnson, JaKarr Sampson
SG - Lance Stephenson, Alan Anderson, Justin Holiday
PG - Chris Paul, Raymond Felton

Clippers are currently 13th in western conference, 27-30 record (5 games behind San Antonio in 8th)

I think you're probably right. He is apparently best buddies with Chris Paul and he would probably fit in with their roster the best.

The Pacific division certainly is gonna be interesting for the next few seasons.

- Warriors and Clippers superteams
- Lakers could take the next step with all their young talent
- Kings have a much better team, but still suck at playing basketball
- San Diego have a legit superstar in Dennis Smith Jr. He will be rookie of the year easily
- My team is pretty decent too, I think

More trades completed around the league

Image

There were three more trade deals finalised this week, including potential power-shifting moves for high-flyers in both conferences.

Portland and Oklahoma City both made bold moves in the hopes of solidifying their top four seed status. Whilst the eastern conference-leading Raptors landed a major coup by acquiring veteran big man Serge Ibaka from Orlando.

Image

The first deal done was a real power move from Raptors general manager Masai Ujiri. He sent a massive statement of intent to the likes of Cleveland and Boston by acquiring powerhouse big man Serge Ibaka from the Orlando Magic.

The trade will also see veteran role players Michael Beasley and Wayne Ellington head to Toronto. In return the Magic receive young prospects Norman Powell and Isaiah Hartenstein, veteran shooter DeMarre Carroll and a 2018 top ten protected first round draft pick.

Toronto have surprised a lot of people this season as the early-season pacesetters and should only further solidify their grip on the eastern conference standings with this move. They have started the new campaign by winning twenty-six of their first forty-one games and look very comfortable at the top of the standings.

The tandem of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry has continued to flourish for them at the offensive end, whilst the emergence of Jonas Valanciunas as a genuine top ten center in the league has helped push the team to greater heights.

The addition of an elite defender like Ibaka, who is also a very competent offensive player, could prove to be the final piece of the championship-winning puzzle for a franchise that is looking to end it's twenty-three year trophy drought. This is the best chance they have had at winning the title in their relatively short existence.

It's probably important to note that it was looking unlikely that the Raptors were going to be able to afford to re-sign Norman Powell next season. So turning him, DeMarre Carroll and a very raw German prospect into Serge Ibaka is a very solid move. The Congolese forward is averaging thirteen points, six rebounds and nearly two blocks per game and is locked into a multi-year contract.

This trade comes only a day after Magic general manager Rob Hennigan locked in explosive forward Aaron Gordon to a four-year $78 million contract extension. Which leads many to believe that he had made a straight-up choice between the former Arizona Wildcat and Ibaka in terms of who would be the starting power forward for the future of the franchise.

He also signed Elfrid Payton to a four-year $46 million extension on the same day. The six-foot-four guard has held the starting point guard role for Orlando relatively unopposed since he was drafted in 2014.

The Magic aren't in tanking territory just yet, as they currently hold the ninth seed with a 18-20 record. But it had become apparent in the early stages of the season that this group wasn't heading anywhere special. So Hennigan made the call to trade the veteran on the big salary and focus on his more youthful prospects.

Orlando have been looking like "being two years from becoming a competitive team again" ever since Dwight Howard left and the rebuild began. But their core of Aaron Gordon, Nikola Vucevic, Elfrid Payton, Mario Hezonja, Evan Fournier, Bismack Biyombo, Norman Powell, Isaiah Hartenstein and Stephen Zimmerman isn't the worst team ever assembled by any means.

Perhaps Magic fans should be hopping on the same bus as Indiana and Washington fans, setting their sights on a future eastern conference landscape where the LeBron era is finished and their teams should be coming out of their respective rebuilds with hopefully championship-calibre talent on their teams.

A couple of days after the excitement surrounding the Ibaka trade wore off, the Utah Jazz agreed a deal to send expiring forward Derrick Favors to Oklahoma City.

This trade also sees veteran Jose Calderon and rookie Keita Bates-Diop join the Thunder. In return the Jazz received Domantas Sabonis, Quincy Pondexter, Kyle Singler and a 2018 unprotected second round pick.

This trade was mainly made for financial reasons by Utah, because they had three key players coming out of contract at the end of the season; Derrick Favors, Rodney Hood and Dante Exum. General manager Dennis Lindsey took the decision to trade Favors and sign the other two to lengthy extensions, as it allowed them to stay away from any serious luxury tax issues.

Utah have largely built around the rapidly-improving duo of Rudy Gobert and Gordon Hayward in the past couple of seasons. Both of those guys are already locked in for the long-term, so their salary cap was always going to struggle to accommodate too many big contracts. Replacing Favors with a younger and similarly performing version in Domantas Sabonis is a solid move by Utah.

A few hours after trading Favors, the Jazz confirmed extensions for both Hood (four-year, $70 million) and Exum (four-year, $45 million). Now they have their core of Gobert, Hayward, Hood, Exum, Alex Burks and George Hill secured for the long-term. They also have promising youngsters Domantas Sabonis, Trey Lyles, Miles Bridges and Tyler Lydon providing solid minutes off the bench.

Sabonis will likely take over the starting power forward role that Favors has vacated. He is averaging very similar numbers (12p/9r/1b) to Favors (14p/9r/1.7b), and should find that his game will continue to blossom next to in Rudy Gobert, who has established himself as.

This was a brave move for the Jazz to make in a lot of ways. Tampering with a roster that has so far got them holding onto the seventh seed with a 24-16 record isn't always the smartest thing to do.

Are Oklahoma City's owners finally loosening their tight grip on the team's finances in order to allow them to compete for a championship? It certainly looks like it.

Immediately after acquiring Favors they approved a four-year $104 million extension for the former number two overall pick. That move, on top of big-money deals for Steven Adams, Victor Oladipo and Andre Roberson in the past year, really seems to suggest that things are changing.

It's not hard to have faith in your team when it's built around a guy like Russell Westbrook. The superstar guard has become the center of the NBA universe over the past eighteen months with his incredible statistical performances and clutch play.

He is the reigning MVP after leading the league in scoring, assists and steals last season on his way to almost averaging a triple-double per game (28.3p/9.2r/11a/3.3s). He led the Thunder to the third seed with fifty-six wins, but ultimately got swept by the eventual champions Golden State in the conference finals.

Ever since Kevin Durant left to join the Warriors there have been calls for Thunder GM Sam Presti to get a better supporting cast around Russ. Acquiring Favors helps in that regard. Sure, he is only averaging similar stats to what Sabonis is, but his experience and more natural offensive abilities should make him a better fit for the Thunder.

Presti already added outside scoring with Doug McDermott in an earlier trade. So bringing in Favors and his inside scoring ability adds another level of offensive weaponry to their team.

Westbrook meanwhile is just going about his business, averaging close to a triple-double again (24p/10r/9a/3s) as he leads the MVP race and has his team holding the third seed with a 28-14 record. This could finally be the year that the Thunder go all the way in the finals.

Image

Another possible championship contender making a move was Portland. They traded Mason Plumlee, Maurice Harkless and Sacramento's 2018 second round pick to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Jusuf Nurkic, O.G Anunoby and Denver's lottery protected 2018 first round pick.

It's a slightly weird move by the Nuggets due to them already having Nikola Jokic established as their starting center and presumptive future MVP of the league. To trade a high-upside guy like Nurkic for a guy like Plumlee who is only slightly better right now is quite strange. Especially considering they were both in the final year of their contracts.

The addition of Anunoby, an athletic wing player with lots of length and potential who was taken with the twenty-first overall pick in this year's draft, to the trade as well as a future first round pick is also puzzling. The Nuggets are fighting to get into the playoff spots, but it's still a lot to give up for a backup center and a mediocre wing scorer.

Despite this trade, the Nuggets still have one of the best upsides in the entire league. Jokic is an emerging superstar, the young trio of Gary Harris, Emmanuel Mudiay and Jamal Murray have become very good NBA players and number two pick Josh Jackson is one of the leading candidates for the Rookie of the Year award.

Then of course there are TJ Warren, Jared Sullinger, Mason Plumlee, Maurice Harkless, Skal Labissiere and Juan Hernangomez coming off the bench. This Nuggets team really should consider this season a failure if they don't at least make the eighth seed and experience some first round playoff action. They currently sit in tenth spot with a 20-19 record.

Plumlee is averaging eleven points, eight rebounds and a block per game this season.

Portland on the other hand come out of this deal looking brilliant. They add a guy who could eventually be in the top dozen or so big men in the league, a crazy athletic wing guy and another first round pick. Crucially, they also dump some more salary to ease the burden on their luxury tax problems.

They have started this season as one of the leaders in the western conference, holding on to the fourth seed right now with a 26-12 record. That record, as well as Nurkic's paltry averages of three points and six rebounds per game should both start to increase now that the Bosnian is taking over the starting role.

The dynamic big man has a very impressive set of skills and should flourish feeding off of looks from the backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum in Portland. All-star Lillard is leading the league in both points and assists this season and will be the key factor in any playoff success they ultimately have.

Portland wasted no time in signing Nurkic to an extension after acquiring him. A few hours after arriving in town he was signing a four-year $60 million deal.

Nurk to Portland (Y) (Y) Being able to run the entire league is something I miss playing myGM. Of course I have no self-control.. I remember in one of my old stories I put together a Clippers team I liked so much I ended up playing some of their games.

Hopefully you can stay in position to get homecourt advantage. Doubt you'll have any all-stars, but wins are what matters.

Yeah, I love being able to control almost everything that happens in MyLeague. Mostly just to keep the cpu teams from doing stupid stuff though.

Being able to guide each team through the off-season helps me to keep things more realistic and create my own storylines.

It does take a little bit of fun out of the game if you micro-manage too much, but seeing things like a cpu team using a top 3 pick on a bad prospect or having a superstar free agent sign for a lottery team actually takes more fun out of the game for me.

We probably won't have any all-stars this season. For whatever reason the way I play lends itself to even contributions and I don't have any standout individual with crazy stats. Maybe it's the simmed games that screw me over.

I'm hoping that one day Booker and Bender will make it though (Y)

I figured you'd be happy to see Nurkic in Portland. I tweaked his attributes a tiny bit, so he should average more than 3 points and 6 rebounds a game now

Some really low simmed scores, are your sim games 12 minutes? It's refreshing to see but kinda weird haha

Recently we seem to be going 1-1 on every played game + simmed, so we're really just keeping out heads above water in the race for a top 4 seed. We're still a super young team though, realistically. It's an exciting ride.

I'm 99% sure they are set to 12 minute quarters. I don't mind the randomness, but seeing single-digit scoring quarters in sim games isn't fun

Mixture of old and new faces as 2018 all-star selections announced

Image

Late February is arguably the second most interesting period of the NBA season, after the playoffs. Trades are happening all over the place as the deadline approaches, young players are getting paid enormous sums of money to stay with their teams beyond their rookie contracts and the all-star festivities are ramping up.

There is a particularly exciting feel to the all-star weekend this year because of all the fresh faces. The majority of those selected have been involved in less than a handful of all-star games previously. Stalwarts like LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony are now in double figures for all-star appearances. But the experience will be all new to guys like Bradley Beal, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokoumnpo, Gordon Hayward and CJ McCollum.

Reigning rookie of the year Ben Simmons will take part in the dunk contest this year. He will be competing against Marquese Chriss (Phoenix), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (Brooklyn) and Mario Hezonja (Orlando). Last year's winner Andrew Wiggins declined to return to defend his title.

2017 three-point contest champion CJ McCollum also opted against competing again this year. Despite the absence of the Portland sharpshooter, the three-point contest will be contested by a top-class field.

Firstly there is McCollum's teammate Damian Lillard, who is currently leading the league in scoring and assists. Also competing are all-star guards Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

Not to mention the trio of scoring machines from Golden State: Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. This could be one of the most exciting three-point shoot-outs in years.

The rising stars game should also be a lot of fun this year with the level of young talent on display. One side will be led by Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz and Harry Giles. Whilst the other has current leading rookie of the year candidates Dennis Smith Jr, Josh Jackson and Lonzo Ball.

The NBA even decided to give San Diego's Tomas Satoransky a chance to play in this game, ahead of the likes of Dragan Bender, Marquese Chriss, Domantas Sabonis, De'Aaron Fox, Frank Ntilikina and Malik Monk for some unknown reason. The twenty-six-year-old's selection certainly left a lot of people scratching their heads.

Yeah there's bound to be ups and downs for a young squad, you are way ahead of schedule anyways (Y)

Good job holding Utah under 80 points! Love the old school scorelines haha

I think we're the best defensive team in the league, in terms of points allowed anyway. We kind of need to be because the cpu always seems to take more shots than me in every game. It's just my higher shooting percentage that keeps me in the contests.

Having four seven-footers to guard the paint is very handy. Plus Iguodala and Bledsoe on the perimeter.

It truly is bizarre. Especially as he is probably playing better for you than he is here.

Ugh. All my guys played brilliantly, but Kyrie was shooting like Curry from downtown.

I swear the game adds a bunch of missed shots to the box score after the game, because it sure didn't feel like he missed more than he made.

Official: Carmelo Anthony dealt to the Clippers just hours before trade deadline

Image

After weeks of speculation, the New York Knicks today officially traded unsettled all-star forward Carmelo Anthony.

An agreement was reached that will see him head to to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford, Brice Johnson, JaKarr Sampson and two future draft picks. The picks are reportedly a 2018 first round pick and a 2020 second round pick, both without any protections.

The Clippers also acquire role players Lance Thomas, Maurice N'Dour and Justin Holiday in the deal.

This whole saga started over six weeks ago when Knicks president Phil Jackson publicly expressed his interest in finding a trade deal for Anthony that would be mutually beneficial to both parties. He reportedly discussed deals with the Lakers, Sixers and Bulls before finally agreeing to this deal with the Clippers.

Getting abruptly traded to the Clippers brings to an end the Carmelo Anthony era for the Knicks. He arrived with much fanfare in February 2011, but ultimately has to be considered a flop. He delivered only one division title, a conference semi finals appearance and two first round playoff exits. Not to mention missing the playoffs for the past four seasons.

Despite still having underperforming veterans Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah on big-money long-term contracts, the Knicks are expected to enter a rebuilding mode now and reshape their roster around rising stars Kristaps Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez. Jackson may look to offload any salaries that he can during the off-season and start from scratch.

As things stand the future isn't all doom and gloom in the Big Apple. Right now the Knicks hold the third highest odds in the draft lottery and could have enough money to sign a max-level free agent in the Summer. The Clippers pick they got in this trade is also currently in the lottery, but will probably rise as Anthony helps them win more games.

You would imagine that Knicks fans would probably be pretty excited by the prospect of pairing Slovenian swingmen Luka Doncic with Porzingis. Or perhaps they will get a shot at Missouri forward Michael Porter Jr if he drops to whatever pick they end up with.

Jamal Crawford is likely to retire at the end of the season, so his $13 million team option won't be an issue. Austin Rivers has a $12 million player option for next season, which he could opt out of if he doesn't want to stay with the dysfunctional Knicks. He could prioritise a winning culture over financial security and leave to join a stronger team.

The Knicks currently hold the thirteenth seed in the eastern conference with disappointing a 19-37 record.

This is an "all-in" move by Doc Rivers and the Clippers. Despite currently having the fourth-worst record in the western conference, the Clippers feel like they can challenge for a title with Anthony on board. They are starting a long way back, but it's hard to argue that they now have one of the most talented rosters in the league.

Billionaire owner Stave Ballmer is desperate to win a trophy and is prepared to pay whatever it takes to get one. The Clippers will now have four players earning over $25 million per season each, assuming that Anthony and DeAndre Jordan opt into their player options for next season.

It's highly likely that Anthony will spend the rest of his career in Los Angeles. He is good friends with Clippers on-court leader Chris Paul and the newly formed "big four" looks as good as most teams on paper. Having Paul and Griffin already locked in for several more years makes the decision easier as well.

Anthony is averaging 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game this season. That form was enough to earn him his eleventh all-star appearance next month. A league source confirmed today that he will still be a started for the eastern conference team despite now playing for a team in the western conference.

Anthony won't have much time to settle in with his new team because they need to act fast to make up a five game deficit to the eighth seed Spurs.

Knicks also send Lee to Sixers

Phil Jackson continued to reshape his roster in the hours after trading all-star Carmelo Anthony to the Los Angeles Clippers.

He agreed a separate trade that sent veteran wing Courtney Lee to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Nik Stauskas and two future second round picks. The picks are from 2018 and 2020 and originally belonged to the Knicks.

Swapping Lee for Stauskas will free up over $12 million in cap space next season due to Stauskas' expiring contract. The Knicks could have enough money to sign two max-level players in the off-season, depending on what Austin Rivers decides to do with his player option.

Philadelphia are currently holding fourth seed in the eastern conference, but appear to be a step behind the likes of Boston, Toronto and Cleveland at the moment. They are looking to have their best season since reaching the NBA finals in 2001.

After John Wall joined Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid midway through last season, the trio led the Sixers to their first .500 season since 2012. They finished in sixth place with a 45-37 record, but got swept in the first round by the Chicago Bulls.

Adding a veteran two-way guard like Lee to their bench is another solid move by Philly. He will join Dario Saric, Robert Covington, Dwight Powell, Justin Anderson, TJ McConnell, Roy Hibbert, Jerryd Bayless, Anthony Morrow and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot on a pretty deep looking second unit.

Crawford gets green light to go ring chase

New York also reached an agreement with veteran guard Jamal Crawford for a buyout from his contract. He will now be allowed to sign with a contending team if he passes waivers in a couple of days.

Crawford arrived in the Anthony trade, but asked to be waived because he didn't want to waste the final months of his NBA career on a lottery team.

The 37 year old is expected to draw interest from championship contenders Oklahoma City, Boston, Toronto and San Antonio.

Knicks sign former Kentucky star

In other news, former Boston first round pick James Young signed a two-year deal with the Knicks worth $2 million. The shooting guard was selected by the Celtics with pick 17 in 2014, but failed to live up to the hype.

He was picked up by the San Diego Eagles in the expansion draft earlier this season, but subsequently got waived in order to free up a roster spot to allow them to sign veteran center Andrew Bogut.
