Never. Not even for LeBron. :)

I feel like I've forgotten how to get Beal to score. Since that 34 in Chicago he's been pretty disappointing for me. It's probably been the difference between me winning and losing the last few games. :|

Grizzlies dump more salary as Nets commit fully to title run

Image

Veteran big man Zach Randolph has today returned to the Big Apple, five years after he was traded by the New York Knicks to the LA Clippers.
This time though he'll be wearing the jersey of their newly arrived noisy neighbours, the Brooklyn Nets. Josh Selby joins him in heading to New York.
The pair join the Nets in exchange for Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Reggie Evans and a 2014 first round pick, who will link up with the Grizzlies.

For Brooklyn, this is a move that is similar to the one that saw them acquire Joe Johnson from the Hawks. Money isn't an issue for them anymore.
With billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov bankrolling the team, they have no fear of paying excessive luxury taxes in their pursuit of a championship.
Despite losing the bench scoring of Brooks and looking rather thin for reserves now, there is no question that Randolph is an upgrade on Humphries.
Their starting line-up now has an average age of about 30 and the team's championship window won't be a long one, but it is now at least possible.
Williams (19p/8a), Johnson (21p/6r/4a), Lopez (19p/9r/2b) are leading the Nets currently. Randolph (12p/9r) should give them more inside scoring.
The Nets are currently holding down the sixth seed in the eastern conference after a shaky 7-5 start to the season. They should improve now though.

Memphis on the other hand seem to be headed in the opposite direction. In the last year they've traded both Randolph and Rudy Gay for cap relief.
They still have Marc Gasol and Mike Conley as their star players, but now guys like Speights, Bayless and Ellington will really have to step up for them.
Humphries, whilst mainly acquired as an expiring contract, will be a good one-season option for them in the rotation alongside Speights and Arthur.
Brooks is the real asset for the Grizzlies in this deal. They've lacked a talented shooting guard since OJ Mayo signed with Dallas before last season.
Evans will bring energy and rebounding to their second unit. The future draft pick could end up being rather low if Brooklyn dramatically improve.
Memphis are having a poor season and it may have convinced them to do this deal. A 3-7 start isn't a good base to build on towards the playoffs on.

Brooklyn receive
Zach Randolph - 32 - PF - $34.30m - 2 years (81)
Josh Selby - 22 - SG - $884k - 1 year (65)

Projected line-up:
Brook Lopez - Zach Randolph - Gerald Wallace - Joe Johnson - Deron Williams
Bench:
Tyshaun Taylor, Mirza Teletovic, CJ Wilcox, Josh Selby, Kyle O'Quinn, CJ Watson, Tornike Shengelia

Memphis receive
Kris Humphries - 28 - PF - $12.00m - 1 year (75)
MarShon Brooks - 24 - SG - $1.28m - 1 year (74)
Reggie Evans - 33 - PF - $1.70m - 1 year (62)
Nets' 2014 first round pick

Projected line-up:
Marc Gasol - Kris Humphries - Quincy Pondexter - MarShon Brooks - Mike Conley

Interesting trade, i like it though, good moves by the grizz imo if they are worried about money, also get some good young pieces.

Wall had 9 assists in the first quarter. He set a new franchise assist record in this game. It's something positive I can take from this result, I guess.
I should have won this game easily, but I just couldn't build any sort of lead at all. I couldn't get any stops when I needed them either.

Wall: "I'm in the form of my life"

Image

John Wall has always felt the immense pressure that goes with being a number one pick. But this season he seems to be fulfilling his vast potential.
With an improved support cast around him at the Wizards he has had the burden of carrying the team taken off his shoulders and can just play ball.
He came into this season with career averages of 17.5 points and 8.1 assists per game. This year though he is amazingly doubling his assist average.
Somehow he has managed to increase his assist rate to nearly 16 per game, but only let his scoring drop by about 5 points compared to last season.
It is incredibly rare to see a player averaging more assists than points, especially when their scoring level is 15 per game. But Wall is really doing it.
If he can keep this pace up for the rest of the season he has a great chance to beat John Stockton's record of 14.5 per game in the 1989-90 season.
The player himself is really quick to shy away from any talk of record breaking though, "Nah, I'm not even thinking about and of that stuff", Wall said.
"I'm just looking to play my best and get my teammates involved so that we can win games, improve and hopefully give our fans a nice playoff run."
Recently in Charlotte he broke Kevin Porter's thirty year old franchise record of 24 assists in a single game by dishing out 26 against the Bobcats.
Wall leads the league in assists by a margin of 4 per game over the second placed Goran Dragic. He also has the most turnovers per game though.
He and his teammates will host the Trail Blazers at the Verizon Center tomorrow night and they'll hope to extend their current two game win streak.

I think my team plays better when I don't try to score with Wall every possession. I never tried to get this many assists with him, it just happened one game and I've kept playing the same way since because it works well for my team. :)

Re: Wizards [7-7] - Dominant performance at MSG

Postby Phil89 on Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:00 pm

I'm facing a little bit of a dilemma. Rudy Gay is my best scorer, but his contract is just too big. It really makes things hard for me in the future.

For example, I've got John Wall, Derrick Favors and Patrick Patterson all due for new contracts next season. I can imagine those three would cost me at least $30-$40 million per season combined. Then there's Noel and Beal in the years after that.

So what I'm wondering is should I:
a) trade Rudy for some more manageable contracts (likely at the deadline or even on draft day)
b) keep Rudy, end up over the cap and risk losing one of the three I mentioned above
c) trade every good player on my team to the Thunder for Kendrick Perkins and a 2066 second round pick :cheeky:

I really don't want to lose him, but if keeping him ruins the future flexibility of my team I may have no choice. Any feedback is appreciated. :)

I say trade him for an expiring contract and a high/lottery first rounder and a future second rounder. Wall is really someone you can build around on and Patrick and Favors are both crucial for rebounding. Your prospects have a lot of potential.

Ever since Rudy Gay has been traded to the Raptors, I've been loving him. :D I don't think that Patterson or Favors will ever be star players on your team, so I would suggest that you trade one of them at the trade deadline for a player who is already as good as them but with as smaller contract status.

I'm thinking of trading Patterson as well (I don't really want to pay him next year), so I may package them together and look for a SF who earns under $12m and a big expiring.

I'm tempted to straight swap Rudy for Paul Pierce, or get Marion (exp) and Beaubois from Dallas (decent backup PG on good deal (3yr/$15m), Jack is exp for me). Another offer that intrigued me was a straight swap with Phoenix for Michael Beasley. He's been good for me in the past and he's earning like $12m a year less than Rudy. I could always send Rudy to Toronto for Gasol's $19m expiring. That would at least put him in the right place.

Obviously I want to dump Rudy's contract without hurting my chances of making the playoffs this season too much.

Don't go for any of the ones you mentioned. Beasley has the scoring touch, but can go off mostly. Paul Pierce and Marion are both old, and it's a possibility that they can retire or go out with an injury. But with Marion's expiring contract, that's probably a small "+".

Jeff Green's is the ideal one for me, but I doubt you'd wanna get him and his huge $36M contract. One thing I also have in mind is Perry Jones.

Iguodala a bit too old for my team at this point. I could have signed him as a free agent this year but I decided not to. I've got a trade figured out and I may just do it now instead of waiting so that I can get used to the news players before the playoffs. All I'll say for now is that it involves the top and bottom teams of one of the conferences. LAC/DAL or PHI/TOR? :proud:

Got my internet working too. :)

Re: Wizards [7-7] - November Summary

Postby Phil89 on Sun Feb 17, 2013 4:25 pm

Ok. I've been thinking about what to do with Rudy all week and here are the two I've narrowed it down to:

Spoiler.
Trade A (WAS - PHI - TOR)

WAS IN: Evan Turner, Pau Gasol, Raptors 2014 first, 76ers 2014 first
WAS OUT: Rudy Gay, Patrick Patterson, JJ Hickson, Robin Lopez, Wizards 2015 first

PHI IN: DeMar DeRozan, Patrick Patterson, Ed Davis, Robin Lopez, Wizards 2015 first
PHI OUT: Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes, Dorell Wright, 76ers 2014 first

TOR IN: Rudy Gay, JJ Hickson, Spencer Hawes, Dorell Wright
TOR OUT: DeMar DeRozan, Pau Gasol, Ed Davis, Raptors 2014 first

-Turner is a top 5 SF on the game and is only 25. His numbers aren't very good, but that would change if he's the star on my team.
-This deal saves me a lot of money as Hickson leaves too, but some of that will be spent on Turner.
-Salary cap is $62m next season and (worst case) if I have to pay Wall, Favors and Turner $15m each, I'll still have like $7m to spend.
-Not sure if I'd re-sign Gasol unless he took a huge pay cut.
-This deal leaves my big man reserves very shallow. I'd have to sign a free agent to fill the gap.

2013 contracts: $39m
2014 contracts: $10m
Savings: $29m
Expiring: Wall, Favors, Turner, Gasol, Jack

Trade B (WAS - TOR)

WAS IN: DeMar DeRozan, Pau Gasol, Raptors 2014 first, Raptors 2015 first
WAS OUT: Rudy Gay, Patrick Patterson, Tony Allen, Jason Maxiell

TOR IN: Rudy Gay, Patrick Patterson, Tony Allen, Jason Maxiell
TOR OUT: DeMar DeRozan, Pau Gasol, Raptors 2014 first, Raptors 2015 first

-I feel like DeRozan is pretty decently priced on like $9m per season. I like his dunking ability (like Rudy).
-He's also scoring like 27ppg, which would make him a much better choice than Turner to replace the big scoring hole that Rudy leaves.
-Salary cap situation would probably end up similar to the first deal if I re-sign Wall and Favors.
-With this deal though I keep my 2015 pick and gain a possible lottery pick (Raptors have worst record atm, but should improve a bit)
-I'd keep Hickson and still have a pretty nice big man rotation.

2013 contracts: $39m
2014 contracts: $27m
Savings: $12m
Expiring: Wall, Favors, Gasol, Jack

I was all set to do trade A yesterday, but the more I look at trade B today the more I like it. Any opinions on these deals? :)

How many years does Pau have left and what is he getting paid? I want Trade B because I am a Sixers fan and want to keep E.T. in Philly

I'll take A so you can get Turner. Gasol should give enough scoring to compensate for Gay, plus Turner can score about 15 a game as well.

Pau is on like $19m and is expiring. He's mainly in this deal as a salary dump, but would give me a good bench scorer for a season.

Turner is definitely the better player on the game, but DeRozan is already locked into a decent enough contract and would probably save me a few million dollars a year versus Turner. DD is actually scoring more than Rudy this season 27ppg > 24ppg, but ET is only scoring 15ppg. Seems DD would fill the scoring need better.

I think I'm gonna go with trade B. It just leaves me in a better position to reach the playoffs this season. Plus DeRozan can do this:

Gay's Washington adventure comes to an end

Image

The Washington Wizards today traded star forward Rudy Gay to Toronto. It's the second time in ten months that he's been moved on for financial reasons.
It seems that his monster contract is just too much for teams to handle. The $17m this season and $19m next season simply cripples a team's wage structure.
General Manager Steve Kerr pulled the pin on the Gay experiment after less than twelve months as the Wizards have many bright stars due to earn big money.
"Unfortunately it's a decision that we've been forced to make. It is never ideal to trade an all-star, but we had to look after the future of this team", said Kerr.
They agreed to send Gay, Patrick Patterson, Tony Allen and Jason Maxiell to the Raptors in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Pau Gasol and two future draft picks.

Toronto landed themselves one of the top scorers in the league to help veteran Steve Nash get them into playoff contention before he retires in the coming years.
They've been re-tooling their roster a fair bit this season, having already traded away Jose Calderon, Andrea Bargnani, Kyle Lowry, Landry Fields and Amir Johnson.
Now young prospects like Jonas Valanciunas, Terrence Ross and Ed Davis will be given bigger roles, whilst veteran Steve Nash will continue to be the leader for them.
After starting the season with a 4-12 record, they decided to do this and try and save their season. Gay will have to settle in pretty fast to help turn things around.
They are currently sitting bottom of the eastern conference and if they'd waited any longer to shake things up their season could have been a total write-off already.
It'll be interesting to see how all the pieces fit together once Terrence Ross is fit again. It remains to be seen how Valanciunas and Patterson handle being starters too.

Washington decided to trade Gay despite him being their leading scorer and key to their good start to the season. They did it to give themselves financial flexibility.
They had to do this because the trio of John Wall, Derrick Favors and Patrick Patterson were all coming to the end of their rookie contracts at the end of the season.
Also, Patterson had been growing unhappy lately with his reserve role and was always the most likely of the three to be moved on instead of getting paid big money.
Losing Gay and his scoring leaves a big hole, but DeRozan is actually averaging more points per game than him. He is on a much friendlier four year contract as well.
Although the Wizards' fans will be sad to lose a great entertainer like Rudy Gay, they will at least have the high-flying dunking antics of DeRozan to look forward to now.
Having the dual-championship winning experience of veteran Spanish big man Pau Gasol coming off the bench will give the Wizards a great second unit scoring boost.
Washington have improved greatly over last season after a major off-season rebuild. They are sitting just outside of the playoff seeds with a 7-7 record to this point.
Before they did this deal they had about $39m in guaranteed contracts next season, now they've reduced it to $27m. They'll have $35m to spend during on free agents.
Although stars John Wall and Derrick Favors are coming out of contract next season. They probably won't have enough to sign another star if them re-sign them both.

Crap, I had a trade ready similar to this, Gay to Toronto, Nash to Memphis though, but now I have no idea how to continue moving on in my association without trading Nash.

Also DeRozan is a great pickup, especially if he's averaging more point than Gay and is getting waaaaaaaay less money. What made the Grizz give Gay such a large contract for in the first place?

Sorry :o

No idea why Gay was ever paid that much. I think if he was being paid like $12m per season it wouldn't even be an issue and he'd still be at Memphis. He's just not worth more than Durant/LeBron etc though.

Rockets land Robinson on busy trade day

Image

It has been a busy day of trading across the league with no less than three deals completed. No major stars were involved, but they still got most people talking.
Firstly, Sacramento shocked everyone by sending forward Thomas Robinson and James Johnson to the Rockets for Toney Douglas, Trevor Booker and Cole Aldrich.
For some reason they gave up on the player who was selected with pick five in last year's draft. The team is struggling and doesn't seem to have a clear direction.
Next, Milwaukee improved their scoring depth by acquiring JJ Redick and Ishmael Smith from the Magic, sending Tobias Harris, Doron Lamb and John Henson back.
The Bucks made the Finals last season and are looking to repeat that feat. This deal gives them a sharpshooter off the bench and a much better backup point guard.
Lastly, Oklahoma City sent backup point guard Eric Maynor to the Blazers in exchange for their 2014 second round draft pick. A deal which saves them a bit of money.
Maynor had lost his backup role to Reggie Jackson after he suffered a serious knee injury and had apparently been desperate to get a fresh start with another team.
