Daniel Diary Season 2 - Still a Rocket

Postby Alphasim on Sun Oct 07, 2012 6:26 pm

This is the chronicle of Rick Daniel, a 6’2” scoring point guard from Akron.

I’m playing on Pro difficulty in 5 minute quarters.

I’m also going to be running this in first person, FYI. Let’s get it on!

--

Image
My career started after a 23 point, 3 assist 2 rebound Rookie Showcase, for which I was rewarded by being drafted 16th by Houston. Great, I get to ride the pine behind Linsanity. Fun! Actually, this is a good thing because I’ll need someone to cover for my growing pains in my first year or so.

Image
The first half of the season went poorly. After two (key) games , my jumper abandoned me – without even saying goodbye! I went over a month without hitting a single three. My best play involved shaking J-Kidd, who was apparently traded to the Mavs, out of his shoes. Unfortunately it led to a pass to a teammate who blew a layup. In fact, that’s my biggest issue at the moment. My damned teammates blow the easy shots I set up for them so I can’t even play facilitator! Oh well, on we play.

Image
Come February, I made the roster of the Rookie/Sophomore game, and seeing as how I’m averaging 2.6 points and 1.2 assists, and starting this game, I don’t think it’s possible to miss out on this game. Anyway, I started at shooting guard next to Kyrie Irving (being a RL Cavs fan, this thrilled me to no end) and had a mediocre game. This was during my no-threes stretch though, so I tried to set up other players and pass on long range shooting. That’s obviously foreshadowing, btw.

I sat with us down a few points in the fourth quarter and came back to start overtime. Overtime?? Yeah! I played a few minutes before getting pulled with us up 2. I came back to this.

Image
Down a point with 7.5 seconds to go, and they have the ball. An intentional foul led to two free throws to put us down three. Now we had to hit a three to tie the game. I know one person who has no business…

Image
Oh no. What am I thinking?!

Image
Image
Image
D’AAAAARRGGHH! I knew better! I knew I was ice cold from deep! I cost us the game! CURSES!

--

Image
The second half of the season went a little better, partially because I worked out the kinks in my jumper by doing a lot of practice drills. My favorite highlight involved playing the Grizzlies in Memphis.

Image
We were up two with time winding down and the Grizz had the ball. Specifically, Mike Conely had the ball. Emphasis on ‘had.’

Image
Image
I picked his pocket and cruised to a layup to seal the game. The second half of the season saw me playing allot of shooting guard next to Jeremy Lin which was just fine by me. I averaged about 10 points a game in the Key Games that I played in the last month of the year and made the All-Rookie 3rd team. We also made the playoffs, taking the 8th seed which pits us against the Clippers, and more importantly for me, Chris Paul. Wish me luck!

Our series against the Clippers got off to a terrible start.

Image
I ended the season with an appearance on the 2K Sports magazine. I didn't want to let them down by getting knocked out in the first round.

Image
Unfortunately I finished game one with 2 points on 1-8 shooting. I did have 2 rebounds and 3 assists but we got stomped. Game four came around and we were down 3-0, so being swept was a very real possibility. I unleashed my best game as a pro, dueling Chris Paul down the stretch.

Image
He and I went back and forth in the fourth quarter, as he would give them the lead and I would tie the game, either with a basket or an assist. Unfortunately he got a clear layup when I got triple-picked to give the Clips a 3 point lead. I blew my open trey to tie the game at the buzzer and we were done. Damn it all.

--

Image
The next year started with some good bulletin board material. Last place in the power rankings? Oh, boy.

Image
This season started out poorly as well, but come the third game I found myself in the starting lineup (after complaining to the GM about the coach's performance). I helped seal a win with 12 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. I actually played shooting guard most of the game which was totally fine by me. I'm actually pretty comfortable playing off the ball, setting back picks and pulling a Rip Hamilton, running off screens to get open.

Image
My starting gig netted me a billboard downtown. I'm almost certain they're jumping the gun, but that's just me.

Image
The next game was against the Trailblazers at home. I again had a decent game, scoring 9 points with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block in 14 minutes, and we won. So for the record, we're 2-0 with me as the starting 2-guard. I think this is the start of a good thing.

I'm currently averaging 8.5 points (3rd on the team) and 3 assists (1st on the team) so even though I didn't feel like I was improving, I'm up on the 3.3 ppg/1.2 apg from last season. Progress!

Interesting story so far, i think you already get way better in your stats. Lets see if your Rockets can make the Playoffs once again and maybe have some more success.

Good Luck

I now have three more games under my belt starting for the Rockets, and they've all been very different. First we played Portland at home, and I was having a sad first half. 0-3 shooting, no assists, no boards. Come the third quarter though, we were still in it, only down 2. I scored six straight points grabbed a few boards and a notched a block.

Image
Here we were inbounding with just a few seconds left in the 3rd.

Image
2.3 seconds left. I never make these long-range prayers. In fact, I don't know that I've yet seen one be made.

Image
So, y'know what? Here, Omer Asik. Have fun.

Image
Image
Yeah. Have fun with that. I'm not killing my already low three-point percentage tossing up random bri...

Image
Oh.

Image
Uh, yeah! I knew he would make it. Assist for me!

We won that game and moved on to play the Pistons in Houston. No pics from this game because it was all around unimpressive for me, visually. I was scoreless but I did hand out a new career high seven assists with no turnovers.

Next up was Miami, again at home. I had an all together forgettable game up to the last half minute. I was 2-11 shooting on the night, and we were tied. With 25 seconds remaining I set a pick for Lin before rolling to the basket.

Image
Made it! Unfortunately that left almost a shotclock worth of time for the Heat, and I knew there were going to Wade, who had gotten hot in the second half by torching me off the dribble.

Image
He slipped me and got this shot off clean.

Image
Image
Luckily for me, he missed it. We're now 5-0 with me starting at shooting guard, and now have the same record as Miami: 5-2. Looks like we're on the rise.

It's been a couple of weeks (in game) since my last update. Here's what's up.

Image
I had a pretty bad stretch during mid-November. I was averaging 10.5 ppg in our losses, while scoring 12 and 0 in our two wins during that stretch. I was shooting 38% form the field which matches my season average.

Image
My big game came against Sacramento at the start of our most recent win streak. I scored a career high 19 points on 8/11 shooting with 1 rebound, 4 assists 2 steals and no turnovers in the victory.

Image
Our most recent game was a victory over the Wizards, and I had 11 points, 3 rebounds with an assist. By the way, I want to go on a little tangent here. I'm a 6'2" weakling and am built to play point guard. The Rockets start me at the 2-guard though. Normally I'm OK with that but I keep having to guard players 6'4" or taller. Needless to say they like to post me up. This is a an all bad thing. Also, I have no hops. Why is that a bad thing?

Image
Because the other team throws an alley oop to my man about once every other game and I can't do squat about it. Actually, Bradley Beal of the Wizards lit me up for the first four scores to start that Wizards game. This is noteworthy because I shut him down the rest of the game and got credit in the post game interview for my defense. Yay for me.

Image
Lastly this pic shows the league leaders in points, rebounds and assists. I think we're doing quite well.

As for me, it's early December now and I'm averaging 8.4 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 2.5 apg in about 14 minutes a game. My rookie season was a wash; I consider myself a 2nd year rookie, so I'm satisfied.

It's been up and down the last week or two. Our recent game against Milwaukee was a definite down.

Image
I scored 14 points, had five assists and shot 6/10, but I got lit the heck up by one Monta Ellis, to the tune of 24 points in 18 minutes, 20 of which came after half time. On one play I blocked his shot with 2 seconds left, and he recovered his miss and three it in the general direction of the rim and it fell. I forced a double-clutch from three quarters court to end the first half from him, and he was unfazed - nothin' but net. He was red hot. No, he was WHITE HOT, almost unfathomably hot. It was unreal :bowdown2: Man I hate Monta now.

As for me, I'm doing stupid things. I haven't made a layup in a month or more, either getting blocked at the rim, or getting blocked BY the rim, or just laying the ball over the rim... I just can't complete the simplest act in the game. It's infuriating. I also had another game where I was trying to pass the ball up the sideline on a fast break but instead I wound up and hurled a football pass into the 38th row. Seriously, it wasn't even over the guy's head! I just turned 90 degrees, faced the crowd and lobbed the ball towards the second deck like it was a t-shirt during a time out. Unbelievable. I have actually had several points recently when I was either so badly outplayed or shot so poorly that I contemplated giving this up.

And then I came home.

Image
Playing in Cleveland is special to me, being from Akron. I grew up following the Cavs so I was looking forward to playing them. They've upgraded from Kyrie Irving to Chris Paul (with Irving still around as CP3's backup) but the rest of their team isn't very good. I faced Dion Waiters at the 2-guard and boy did I have my way.

Image
I scored 11 points in the first half and played a good all-around game. I had one turnover on a failed entry pass to the post but that was it. In the third quarter I didn't shoot while getting my team into the game but I picked up where I'd left off offensively once the fourth quarter started. I scored 9 more points to reach 20 for the first time in my career.

Image
Yay! 20 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and the one turnover on 6/13 shooting in 15 minutes for the easy win, my first 'Good' game rating and my first Player of the Game award. That's a nice homecoming.

Image
Remember where we stood at the start of the season in the power rankings? Yeah, dead last at #30. I'd say we've moved up in the world.

Image
This is noteworthy for RacerX's comment. I have to ask, what @RDaniel is he watching? It's like when I'm shooting a 0/6 and getting torched and my coach pulls me while saying he loves my play so far. So... what? You want me to shoot us out of games and play matador defense? That was the game plan? Again, what game was he watching? It can't be the same ones I'm playing in.

Oh well, live and learn I guess. It's the new year now so I'm playing to make the rookie/sophomore game again this year. Wish me luck!

Well it looks like coming home to Cleveland for a game has given my career a shot in the arm. Since then, my confidence is back, my shot is falling and I'm having fun again.

Image
I've gotten my ball handling down as well finally. It's not like I was sloppy prior but now I'm getting to the rim with relative ease.

Image
I have even developed something of a go to move: cutting towards the baseline at the left of the basket and hitting a fadeaway jumper as I head out of bounds. Oddly (or not) this is a modified version of the go to move I used in NBA 2k11 (also as Rick Daniel), though that was always on the right side of the rim.

Image
Playing the Nets we were down big early, like 19-9 in the 2nd quarter. By halftime though we had cut it to 21-19. In the 3rd I scored four points as we took the lead. I then put up 8 in the 4th as took a one point lead into the final seconds.

Image
This was the situation as time ran down. I forced a pass by Joe Johnson (who I shut down all game) to Deron Williams who blew the shot. We win again, and I finished with 20 points again.

Since playing Cleveland I've scored 20, 16, 9, 12, and 20, shooting over 50% in the process. My team also has been using me to bring the ball up court recently instead of Lin which may hopefully be hinting at a changing of the (point) guard. We will see.

Things are continuing to look up around here. I recently had a career game, scoring-wise, and got some recognition for my work as well.

Image
Playing against Golden State, I was playing OK until the fourth quarter rolled around. At that point we were in a neck-and-neck battle, and the Warriors were blinkin' hot. We needed someone to get equally hot. That someone was me. I pitched in 11 points in 5 minutes, with five jumpers - some tough as hell - and one free throw. I suck at free throws. I just wish I had a screenshot of my best shot of the game. Do you remember that 'go-to' move I mentioned? I pulled off again in the first half of this game, this time from three point territory. In the end, it was another Player of the Game award and I scored a career high 24 points and had 4 assists as well.

Image
I thought I'd show you part of the secret to our success: our game opening 'play.' We run this every game where we win the tip, and we almost always win the tip. Lin brings the ball up court every game while Kevin Martin and I spot up on opposite sides of the wing every game.

Image
Next, Lin passes the ball to K-Mart every game...

Image
... he immediately shoots (every game, mind you)...

Image
... and he makes it almost every game. That means we start almost every game with a 3-0 advantage. It kind of helps our chances a little.

Image
I played alright against Indiana, scoring 14 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists (plus 1 turnover) but the big news this game came after the game.

Image
I was told I had been selected as conference player of the week for the week prior, where I was averaging 18.3 points a game while shooting 53% from the field. Not bad, says I. In fact, I'd call that pretty good.

Image
Not THIS good, mind you. MVP race? Really? I'm like the fourth best guy on my team and... oh. All the players above me on the team are... also on the list. OK, that looks rigged. Anyone else?

We're currently sitting at 29-12 with a five game lead on San Antonio in our division, and a sizable lead on everyone in our conference save for Oklahoma City. Speaking of the Thunder...

Image
Guess who we play next? It's the battle for the west, and I can't wait.

Here we go, the Big West Showdown!

Image
We're in OKC tonight, which doesn't really bug me. I don't feel any on-court pressure in road games personally.

Image
James Harden? What are you doing on that side of the line, man? Oh, right.

Image
I only made one of my first four shots (seen here) before being effectively frozen out of the offense for the rest of the first half. I never got to touch the ball in the 2nd quarter, during which the Thunder played all back ups and grew a 30-17 lead. Ouch.

Image
Kendrick Perkins put me on my rear on this screen for a Harden three. He (Harden) and I had a duel in the 4th - just how I liked it. This mattered only because we had gone on a big run in the 3rd quarter to tie it at 52... until Eric Maynor untied it at the buzzer with a three. So, to catch up, we're down three heading into the fourth quarter after facing a 13 point hole in the first half.

Image

Image
Just proof that my go-to move is still money in the bank.

Image
I was keeping Harden out of the paint most of the game until this play halfway through the 4th quarter. This gave the Thunder a two point lead. We would tie, they'd take a two point lead, and this would happen over and over until something broke the stalemate.

Image
That something was me hitting a three. It definitely wasn't a defensive stop, that's for sure. It also wasn't a big defensive board for us, because we couldn't get one to save our lives. This last part is pertinent because we got three stops with under a minute to go but couldn't grab the rebound, so Russel Westbrook finally got a short-range jumper to fall, putting them up 1 with under four seconds to go.

Image
You would think I'd know better by now. I've been cold most of the game before hitting a few open shots in the last few minutes. I've missed every buzzer beater I've taken in my career. I missed that game winner in last year's rookie/sophomore game. I should know better.

Image
Still, I'm playing better then I ever have. Maybe this is the time. Maybe this is the start of my legend, my first major entry on my career highlight film. The ball hit it's peak and came down...

Image
.. aaaaaaaand it hit the rim and bounced away harmlessly. Wonderful.

Image
I'm not sure if Asik here is shocked I took the shot or amazed at some dent I put in the rim. Oh well. Better luck next time, right?

Postby Alphasim on Wed Nov 07, 2012 6:51 pm

It's been awhile! How have I been? Quite well, actually.

First off, I got beat up in two meeting with Portland. Why? Because Nickolas Batum is big.

Image
Like, just too big for me. He took me down on the low post to score over and over again. Whenever I'd call for help he'd pass the ball off for a score. We still won both games, though.

Image
In our second meetings, I drove the lane for a layup.

Image
I made it! OMG I made a layup!

Image
I'm even pumped in-game. Nice.

Image
I had perhaps my most complete game in a loss to the Hawks. I racked up 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists with no turnovers on over 50% shooting. It wasn't enough though we - like I said - lost.

Image
Oh boy. Oooooooooh boy. This can't end well. I know for a fact I can't stop Kobe, and I'm pretty sure he can stop me. This won't be pretty.

Image
Sure enough, Kobe was a handful and a half. The old guy has a never-ending bag of scoring tricks.

Image
Luckily for me, I proved to be a tough mark too.

Image

Image
Taking a step-back dribble...

Image
... before pulling up...

Image
... and drilling the shot.

Image
I don't think Bryant leaned the first time. Let's do that again.

Image
Done.

Image
Take notes, son. That's how you do it.

Image
I've also gotten my go-to move to start falling all over the court. Nice, huh?

Image
Boom! We win and I get Player of the Game. I scored 19 points with 3 rebounds and 2 steals on 9/11 shooting. Kobe shot 9/20, with the same number of treys as me (1) on five more tries (6 to 1). He also made 6 free throws to my none, which was the difference in our scoring. I win! I beat the Mamba! ... I think.

In other news, I am now 10th in the league in scoring with 10.8 ppg. Kevin Martin leads the league with 17.2, almost 5 ppg more then the next highest scorer. So who am I above on the scoring charts? Well, my teammate Jeremy Lin (10.6) for one, as well as Brandon Jennings (10.4) and Kevin Love (9.9). Oh and one Kobe Bryant (9.7).

Yeah, I think I 've arrived.

I'm back! Who forgot about me, huh? Come on, you can admit it - you forgot about me. Well, I'm back, and here's what I've been up to.

Image
My stroke's still there, as evidenced by this shot against Denver. I'm actually 8th in the league in scoring now. However, it's come at the expense of my point guard-ing. I recently got the chance to play point guard for three whole plays... and shot the ball twice. Dunce! One time I had this huge lane to the rim and I would have been an idiot not to take it, and the second time I was open but... that's not point guard material. No wonder I'm starting at shooting guard. I'm a PG like Allen Iverson was a PG - just too short to play anywhere else.

Image
Hey, guess who was very happy to see me again? I got TORCHED by Kobe in LA. It wasn't him hitting crazy shots, or his handling skills - it was his movement without the ball. He would elude me and get an open shot time and again. Very frustrating.

Image
Next up was the last game before he All-Star break and we were in Golden State. I want to say, after guarding and trying to score on Kobe, Klay Thompson was like a gift from the heavens, made to be abused.

Image
Nope! Not shooting that one.

Image
He just watches as I blow by him - a reoccurring theme.

Image
Hey look, I can dunk!

Image
Oh, wait. No I can't. Not by a long shot.

Image

Image
Layups are still 2 points, right?

Image
At the end of the game they asked me this question. I'll answer it as I would have liked to.

To paraphrase Tyson Chandler, I couldn't have won this award without Klay Thompson playing matador defense and letting me score at will. This award's for you, Klay.

Image
I got this question at the end of the Lakers game. Huh? Say wha?

Image
Oh yeah, I made the Rising Stars game. Don't get my hopes up!!

Image
See? I'm not an All-Star.

Image
I'm not even... a... wait. WTF? I did it! I am an All Star! Yay! You'll have to excuse me, I have a little party to throw. For myself. I'll catch up with you all again after the All-Star Break.

For a change I recorded a game, this one against Boston in Houston. I narrate as I play, and just as a forewarning I get a little moody at the end when I feel like the game ripped me off. Also there is some fairly minor swearing. Enjoy, and let me know what I can do better.

Watch it here

BTW: next real post will contain the All-Star festivities. Promise.

All- Star Weekend! Yes, it's here. Or was here. It's over now obviously but let's flash back for a moment.

Image
I got to start the Rising Stars game and kicked it off with 3 points and 3 assists in the first quarter when it dawned on me that I'm not here for my play making - I'm here because I score.

Image
So score I did, with 8 points in the 2nd quarter. I finished with 16 points, 5 assist and three treys hit. Now to the big game.

Image
Proof that I did, in fact, make the All-Star game. I even got to play a little.

Image
Here's my first play on defense. Lucky me - posted up by Melo, a guy like 5 inches taller and umpteen pounds heavier.

Image
I did well though, harassing him into a miss.

Image
I even got the rebound. This was my lone mark in the box score, since I only played 3 minutes. That is, if you don't count my 0-2 shooting. Hey, I was the 12th man on the squad for a reason.

Postby Alphasim on Fri Dec 14, 2012 9:13 pm

I'm back everyone, and I'm in trouble. I'm in the doghouse. I screwed up.

I had a really bad game the other day against the Clippers. 5-13 shooting isn't terrible, my 3 turnovers weren't even a season high, and I scored 13 points. It was all of the little things, the constant screw ups on defense, the 5 fouls, the seeming lack of hustle that got Coach McHale mad at me. Oh, and I might have bumped the shooting button near half court. On accident. Coach frowns on 50 foot jumpers with 20 seconds on the shot clock.

Whatever you want to attribute it to, I kind of forgot after the game when I was recognized as March's Player of the Month. Yes! That's two Player of the Weeks and one Player of the Month to go with my All-Star selection in my sure-to-be Most Improved Player campaign. Heck, I might just edge into the MVP discussion - I'm already 3rd on the list, behind teammates Lin and Kevin Martin. I was so stoked that I forgot Coach saying he was cutting my playing time for that last game. That is, until we played the Clips again the next day.

The game started, and I sat. I got benched!! NOOOOOO! It killed my confidence. I was walking on eggshells every time I took the floor this game, trying to show I was a good teammate and responsible player so I could have my spot back. I ended up with 7 points and 6 assists on 3-5 shooting and no turnovers. The 7 points I scored broke my 30 game double digit scoring streak, dating back to the end of December.

Next game, we played our rivals, the Thunder. Again I rode the pine, but this time I got extended burn in a really tight 4th quarter. We were down 2, we tie, we'd go down 2, rinse, lather, repeat. I got into a showdown with James Harden while playing the point, instead of Lin, and bullied us to a tight win. I scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting with 4 assists and 1 turnover. Why, though, didn't Lin come in to relieve me in such a tight spot? I know I was playing good but if nothing else I should have been slid over to the 2-spot. Turns out, Lin was having a really bad game - 2 points and 4 turnovers on 1-7 shooting. He was contributing elsewhere (3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals) but my ball security and scoring were apparently more needed on this night.

Now, to see if I can get my starting gig back.

Picture time!! Woohoo!

*Ahem*

I'm doing rather well. I've regained my starter spot recently, thank God, and continued to torch the league. In a recent Dallas game at home, I put on a show.

Image
I was fired up from the beginning. I was ready for a big game, and I delivered. The big highlight came in the 2nd quarter.

Image
It began as Pat-Pat (Patrick Paterson) saved a loose ball around mid court.

Image
K-Mart picked it up quickly...

Image
... and immediately heaved it up court...

Image
... where I was waiting to receive it.

Image
I started to drive to the lane when I had a change of heart.

Image
Alley oop!

Image
Pat-Pat readies himself to sky over Dirk.

Image
This was no ordinary, run-of-the-mill alley oop, though.

Image
It's a High Off-the-Glass...

Image
.. Reverse Two-hander!!

Image
Pat-Pat was really fired up.

Too bad our bench D wasn't.

I got us a small lead around the time of that highlight, went to the bench and came back to a 13 point deficit. WTF?! I helped us dig out of that hole and then go to the bench. I'd come back in and, guess what? We're trailing 15 points. WHAT THE HECK, BENCH?!

Image
I absolutely did my part, scoring 25 points with 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 turnover on 10/18 shooting, including 5/8 from deep. I hit a a pair of threes in the final 15 seconds to pull us within 1. After an intentional foul and two made freebies, I spotted up for a tying trey. No dice - it bounced off the rim, and we lost the game. ARRGH!

Image
I learned something in the post-game presser - 25 point is my new career high. Yay for the mark, but boo for the loss.

Image
It's been awhile since I shared my stats so here they are. Not bad for a glorified 6th man with a 73 rating in 20 minute games, I'd say.

So how am I doing, folks? Any takes on my career or my writing style?

After that Dallas game I went into a bit of a slump, with two consecutive 3-11 shooting games and 4 turnovers in the two games combined. It was getting very frustrating as the third game post-Dallas rolled around and I again shot sub-50%. The next game (2nd most recent) I started to right the ship with 13 points and 2 assists on 6-8 shooting. Most recently, we played the Suns in Phoenix.

Image
I finally got back on my roll with 21 points on 7-11 shooting. I also netted 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block and no turnovers, plus I shot a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. After that game (which ended with a win and a Player of the Game award for me), I was told that the NBA made a commercial about me. Let's watch it.

Image
Yay, it's me!

Image
I didn't know they included pre-game rituals in these ads.

Image
... I don't get it.

Image
I bet people watching this commercial don't know that I probably missed that shot.

Image
Ok. That was... less then impressive. Still, I'm in the public consciousness now. So long as I don't become the next Blake Griffin of TV ads, It's all good.

It's getting late and I'm getting restless. Why? Because 'THEY' are almost here. We'll get back to this.

Image
Back to my play, I've been struggling again. Well, somewhat. I was scoring at will against the Spurs one day when I went ice-cold in the 4th quarter as San Antonio made a run to get back in the game.

Image
They took us to overtime as I bricked a few late shots. I only took one shot in the extra session, but it took us from a 2 point lead to 4, and I hit 4-4 freebies to ice the game.

Image
This man, though... no - he's not a man. He's a monster, a beast sent from the deepest pits of hell to torment me. I knew Jamal Crawford could score. I mean, obviously, right? We were playing the Clips and I had just commended myself for keeping him to four points in the first half when he been absolutely bonkers on me/us. In the last 7-8 minutes of the game he went from those 4 points to 27. Ouch! Needless to say, we lost.

Image
Hey, am I the only one who sees something obscenely out of place in this picture? K-Mart is a deep threat nonpareil. I mean, almost two and a half times as many makes as the next player on the list. I mean, geez - he's made 22 more then the next player on the list TOOK. He should probably win the MVP for that.

Oh right, he just did.

Image
Season's over, everybody, time to pass out the hardware. Martin did bring home the MVP and it was well deserved, but he wasn't the only Rocket to get an award.

Image
McHale won Coach of the Year for leading us to the #1 seed.

Image
Lastly, I did indeed take home Most Improved Player. I finished the season with 12.4 points per game, 1.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 47% shooting (43% from deep) on 14.7 minutes a night. This is up just a little from the 3.3-0.9-1.2 I averaged the year prior.

Image
Up next, the playoffs! Everyone join me in welcoming our first challenger, the Minnesota Timberwolves to The Launching Pad, as we prepare to shoot their playoff hopes into the far reaches of space. It's on!

It's the playoffs!

Image

Image
I came in ready to light up the T-Wolves defense. I wasn't confident in Brandon Roy's ability to stop me, even if I wasn't that much more sure that I could stop him.

Image
I came out guns blazing and scored 9 points in the first half, most of them on mid-range jumpers. I sat at the end of the 3rd with a 48-41 lead, only to come back to a 51-48 hole. WHAT THE HECK, BENCH?!

Image
Even better, I went stone cold. I went 1-6 in the 4th quarter as the game slipped away and we lost, 63-58.

Ok, let's figure out what the hell just happened here.

The big problem - one I've been hesitant to mention - is that our defense is porous. We have two major weak points, namely our post defense and Kevin Martin. Tonight we held their perimeter group (Ricky Rubio, Brandon Roy and Chase Budinger) to 26 points, half of those belonging to Budinger - Martin's man. I kept Roy to 4 points on the night so I feel that I did my job. I scored 18, Lin had 10 and Martin had 14 so we won the battle on the wings.

It was Kevin Love, though, who ended this night for us. The only Wolves player other then Budinger who scored in double digits, he put in 23 points, allot of them on little turn around shots off of the backboard. The T-Wolves also out rebounded us consistently. Our starting crew had 14 rebounds, six of those from Lin and Martin. The Wolves starting five had 22, eight from Love alone. The last Achilles heal for us on this night was our three point shooting. Martin and I both shot 2-6 and Lin was 0-2. Minnesota also made four threes, but on 4 less tries.

Sorry for going into this one so in depth but my confidence is rattled a little. I'll have to get back on the horse next game so wish me luck.

We now return you to Round One of the NBA Playoffs, with your host, Rick Daniel of the Houston Rockets.

*ahem*

After that excruciating game one loss, I had to regroup. My shot wasn't falling in practice at all and I was struggling in scrimmages so I didn't know how effective I was going to be in game two. I had a plan however, for how I felt I could best help the team: I was going to re-double my efforts as a role player. I'm not nearly the highest-rated player on my team, we have the league MVP and I'm not even playing my natural position because we have someone better than me playing it. That told me that I needed to step back from the limelight. We don't need me to be the star. We don't even need me to be the Scottie Pippen/James Harden of our team. We need me to not do what I did at the end of the last game - cost us a win. That I can do.

Image
With this new-found focus on not failing, we won game two pretty handily. I only scored 7 points but I only took five shots. I also didn't turn the ball over and has two assists and two rebounds. We won but it was deflating to my ego.

Image
The next game, with the series tied 1-1 was in Minnesota and I again went full-out role player. I finished with 13 points, but four of those came on end-of-game free throws to ice the win. Again I didn't turn the ball over and I notched 1 board and 1 assist but... do you remember when I said last post that my confidence was rattled? It's absolutely shattered at this point.

Image
Most frustratingly, Brandon Roy is having his way with me. He's just too big and athletic for me to guard. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

No, actually, I know just what I'm going to do.

I ran through a series of scrimmages and shootarounds before the next game, getting myself back into shape. When game four rolled around I wasn't feeling quite as good as I thought I ought to but my desire to be Role Player #3,521 was gone. I was going to go all-out.

Image
The practice paid off. Not only was my shot back in full force but I was a step quicker on defense and got a career high two blocks.

Image
I had my handle back as well as I ran up the score with a game-high 17 points, to go with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and the aforementioned 2 blocks on 50% shooting (7-14 overall, 3-6 from range).

Image
I got Player of the Game honors and we won! Yes!

Image
I'm so pumped - we're going to the next round!! WOO! We all danced on the floor and got ready to see... who... what?

What do you mean, there's another game against Minnesota, back in Houston? We won! We... oh. Math has conspired against me. 2 road wins plus 1 home win does not equal 4 total. Dammit. Ok, back to Houston.

Image
(on the floor for game five) "Ok, so I can't count! I can still shoot, so isn't that what matters? Gimme a break!"

Image
I started the game with a mid-range jumper and an assist to Kevin Martin for a three, but my mark, Brandon Roy, scored the first 10 points for Minnesota. I mentally noted that and decided to see if I could keep him down the rest of the game.

Image
I shot well this game, scoring 21 points on 8-12 shooting (3-4 from long distance) but I'm most proud of my six assists - most of them to K-Mart who went on to score 31 in a rout. The best part though, was that after that 10-point spurt to start the game, Roy only had four more the rest of the way. Ha!

Image
Ok, now how many wins was that again? How many did we need? Are we moving on now, for real this time? We are? Good. God, I hate math.

Unfortunately I still don't know who we're playing. The Warriors led the Nuggets, three games to two last I saw but that series wasn't decided when I came to post this. What was decided though, was that I had Style.

Image
Yeah, nice, huh? I'm ready for the conference semi-finals now. Are you?

Re: The Daniel Diary Season 2 - QUESTION

Postby Alphasim on Sat Jan 12, 2013 1:21 pm

It's the Conference Semis so let's see who we're facing. Oh, it's the Denver Nuggets. Nice.

Image
Oh! Oh, oh! Do you see what I see? I'm going head up against Andre Miller, another point playing out of position. I should be able to run amok this series.

Image
Game one did see allot of that, with me netting 11 points, 1 board and 1 assist on better than 50% shooting in the first half.

Image
The second half saw the Nuggets lock me down with double teams so I picked up the passing, finishing up the game with 22 points 2 rebounds and 7 assists and my first Great game rating.

Image
I came out fired up in game two. Halftime saw me with only eight points, but five assists.

Image
I coasted the 2nd half big-time, and only finished with 12 points, 1 board, 6 assists and a steal. We're off to Denver now with a 2-0 series lead.

Image
I wasn't passing well in game three but I again had 11 points at the half, where we trailed 38-34. It was around this point that I realized I was being too lazy and we needed someone to step up if we were going to win. K-Mart seemed aggressiveness and Lin was deferring to me so I tried to carry us to a win.

Image
Here you can see me hitting a jumper to put us up two with under 10 seconds to go in regulation. I did it, I hit a late go-ahead basket! It didn't last though as Ty Lawson tied it up and I missed a buzzer beater to win. In overtime neither team could make much headway and I inexplicably went ice cold.

Image
With my shot dead in the water and no one wanting the game badly we tied again and went to our second overtime. This was to be the last as, with under 30 seconds I got a rebound and passed the ball ahead to Martin who hit a three to put us ahead for good. I finished with 25 points but no boards and only 1 assist. Worse, it took me 22 shots to get those points. I usually only take about 10 or 15.

Image
I wanted no part of a repeat of game three, so game four saw me stepping on the gas early and never letting up. Andre Miller apparently was eating buttered popcorn before the game as I stole the ball from him twice and knocked it out of his hands about five more times.

Image
You know how, sometimes you just know it's your night? This was my cue. I forced up a lousy shot over Corey Brewer here...

Image
... which clanged harmlessly off the rim.

Image
Lucky for me, the bounce came right back into my hands.

Image
With Brewer now completely out of position, let's try this again.

Image
Money. I finished with 25 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and a block on 10-15 shooting. If you're counting, that's the same amount of points as last game but on seven fewer shot attempts.

That's that! We're off to the Conference Finals, where we'll either see OKC or Memphis. Part of me wants nothing to do with OKC, since they have the numbers 3 and 4 scorers in these playoffs (you can probably guess who they are), but then again, we have numbers 1 and 2 - Martin and myself. We will see.

Real quick; who would everyone prefer I faced, if I had a choice? What would be a more entertaining matchup?

Re: The Daniel Diary Season 2 - Conference Finals!

Postby Alphasim on Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:35 pm

For anyone wishing for a matchup of the top four scorers in the playoffs, a Durant/Kevin "MVP" Martin matchup, and me chasing James Harden everywhere, I have sad news.

Image
On the other hand, for those that like to hear stories of me torching a lesser team, hey - you're in luck.

Image
I was patient this game. I hit our first two shots but played within the offense didn't force my hand until we only had about 5 seconds on the clock until halftime, when I calmly nailed this three to beat the buzzer.

Image
I scored effortlessly since Randy Foye couldn't keep up with me or make me work on defense (similar to Andre Miller last series). I held him to 4 points on 2-6 shooting, so even though Rudy Gay had a game-high 22, as the only Grizzly in double figures he couldn't carry them to a win.

Image
I, on the other hand had 19 points and we had two others in double digits: Martin with 17 and Lin with 12. I also finished with 1 rebound, 2 assists and no turnovers on 8-10 shooting. Even my lackluster math skills (see about two posts ago) tells me that's a clean 80% from the field.

So... with us up 1-0 after this clobbering (we won by 25) this doesn't look like the most promising series, excitement wise. Sorry 'bout that.

Game two is in the books, so let's get a look at it.

Image
Conley sent me this tweet after the 1st game. Apparently he doesn't remember our 25 point beat-down of his Grizz in that game.

Image
Game two didn't start well, though. I missed my first three shots and Memphis took an early lead. I also turned the ball over, leading to a Foye fastbreak.

Image

Image
I atoned for my mistake quite well, I think.

Image
I was hoping this would fire us up but it didn't. We ended the half trailing 40-30, and I only had two points. K-Mart led us with just 10, so someone would have to get hot.

Image
No dice. To be honest this seemed like an old-fashioned screw job by the game. I don't normally call that but we could do no right for 3 1/2 quarters, while the Grizzlies could do no wrong. I had four points entering the fourth quarter when I decided, y'know what? I don't care if the game wants to screw me. I want to win more.

Image
I absolutely went off in the 4th, scoring 12 points in 5 minutes. I carried us on offense but our defense was being diced up with ease. I hit a jumper and a layup on our last two possessions to tie the game and our D held for once.

Image
We're going to OT! They would take a 2 point lead, we'd tied, they'd go up two again, and so on. This continued until we fouled Zach Randolph at the rim for an and-one, putting them up three.

Image
Martin hit a three to bring us back to even late in the period. He shot just 2-7 from deep and only scored 6 points in the 2nd half and overtime. We were tied with 30 seconds left but Gay hit a tough shot to put Memphis up two. Lin took an inbounds pass at mid court with under 15 seconds to try and tie the game. I sliced to the rim and called for a pass, and got it. Time was running out (5... 4... 3....) and I pump faked instead of shooting. WHAT?! SHOOT, YOU FOOL! (2... 1...) I tossed up a layup quickly that sat on the rim for half a second before falling off.

Image
I had no answer for the press after the game. After entering the 4th with 4 points I finished 20, but only 1 assist. That's not for lack of trying, mind you - no one was hitting anything, making it nigh impossible to net an assist.

Image
After the game Conley chimed back in on Twitter. Wait - between this and the pre-game tweet, did the game actually warn me that it was going to burn us??

Do you remember how I ended last post apologizing for this being an excitement-free series? Yeah. About that.

Hopefully you can come back and silence Conley!

It's game three in Memphis now. Let's get it on!

Image
I didn't get in the swing of this things early, missing a few shots. I was fortunate, then, that we had a balanced attack and the rest of the team picked up the slack.

Image
I got allot of burn in the 4th quarter and I used that the pad my stats. I scored a solid 10 in the final frame to finish with 15 in a 14 point win. Now to game four.

Image
This time, rather than trying to get my teammates going early I wanted to make sure I got off to a solid start.

Image
I ended the first quarter shooting 2-2 with 2 assists. I was actually feeling really confident, so the Grizz were in trouble. The first half ended and I had 10 points on 5-6 shooting.

Image
My shot went AWOL in the 4th quarter. I entered it shooting 80% from the field with 15 points, but left it shooting 66% with 22 points.

Image
Not that it much mattered. I actually didn't even attempt a three this game - a first in quite some time. In fact, I was just so awesome...

Image
... that I apparently crashed Twitter. Oops, sorry guys!

Image
Time for game five, back in Houston.

Image
I was psyched - I wanted to end this NOW. I'm ready for the NBA Finals. I'm tired of this pretense. Let's go, Memphis; let's see what you have left.

Image
As it turned out, they didn't have allot. I shot just 50%, scoring 13 points but we had four players in double figures, led by - of all people - Tony Douglas.

Image
BAM! NBA Finals, here we come! We walloped the Grizzlies in game five, and we're movin' on. I have a little, I don't know what you would call it... a lucky streak? I have a hot streak going that I don't want to jinx yet, even though I want to tell you guys. I'll share it after the finals. Let's just say that I'm not leaving anything to charity.

We're either getting the Bulls or Pistons in the Finals. Who would you prefer??

Image
Oh, by the way - Twitter's back on line. The best part? No Michael Conley.

Just wanted this out there now: I'm thinking of leaving Houston the first chance I get. Why? For a new challenge, and to be The Man for a change. If I remember 2K12 correctly, I can flee after year three. I do intend to bring a championship to my team first, though (unlike another player from Akron). My biggest hurdle is that despite how well I play on some days, I'm still only rated about 77 so I probably won't be able to carry a team on my own.

So, here's the question: is this a good idea, or a plan doomed to fail?

Re: The Daniel Diary Season 2 - It's the NBA Finals!!

Postby Alphasim on Mon Jan 21, 2013 12:06 pm

It's the NBA Finals everyone! Let's go!!

Image
Looks like we're in Chicago. I'm not looking forward to playing them, honestly. With Noah and Boozer patrolling the paint and Rose leading the charge this could be a tough series.

Image
I came out of the gates looking to score, mostly because of K-Mart's shooting (we'll get to that). I entered halftime leading us with 6 points, but we still held a 29-26 lead.

Image
For some reason Chicago thought Boozer should cover me on the perimeter a couple times in the 2nd half. You can guess (and see, above) what happened there. I shot 50% to score my 6 points in the first half but shot 77% for 11 more in the second half. We needed it to since Kevin Martin had the chills.

Image
Dude shot 3-12 and missed all five triple tries. If it wasn't for Patrick Patterson (Pat Patt) stepping it up and pitching in 12 points we might have been in trouble.

Image
As it turned out, though, we handled our business. We won 60-52 and I finished with 17 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist on 62% shooting.

Now we're up 1-0 in the NBA Finals and feeling pretty good. I seem to remember something bad happening the last time we were in this situation though. If I could only remember what it was...

Re: The Daniel Diary Season 2 - It's the NBA Finals!!

Postby Alphasim on Thu Jan 24, 2013 5:31 am

If you don't mind, I'm going to make the coverage of game two short and sweet for two reasons.

1: It wasn't competitive at all
2: We need all the time we can get to discuss game three.

Image
To call game three uncompetitive is an understatement. We dominated the Bulls at their place. Martin and I combined for 47 points. The entire Bulls team had 44. No contest.

Image
Am I the only one unsurprised that Joe D liked seeing us dismantle Chicago?

Image
Game tree started out easy enough as I wrapped up the fist quarter with 9 points on 80% shooting.

Image
Here's an animation of a nice dish I made to Martin in the 2nd quarter.

Image
I entered the half with 11 points on 5/6 shooting with 2 assists and a board. We were playing well but couldn't get any separation - we only held a 4 point lead at intermission.

Image
Rose was an absolute beast this game. This layup in the 4th tied the game at 50-50, and that's where it would stay.

Image
After missing a game winning shot (I should know better by now) we headed to OT. We didn't manage to settle the score there either, so a 2nd OT was needed.

Image
I hit a series of late free throws in the second extra session to give is a three point lead. This is the thing I didn't want to jinx a post or two ago: I'm a career 70% free throw shooter but I have only missed one in over 30 attempts this post season. That didn't change tonight. Still, with Chicago hanging around we needed a play to put them down for good.

Image
Late in double-OT Asik grabbed a loose ball under the Bulls rim.

Image
He lobbed it ahead to me...

Image
... and I threw a baseball pass down court...

Image
... to a streaking Kevin Martin.

Image

Image
Oh yeah, you think he doesn't know this game is over?

Image
The Bulls had one last play in them and for the first time tonight I slipped up and let Courtney Lee get a clean look at the basket.

Image

Image
Uh oh.

Image
Uuuuuuuh oh. We're up by four so this shouldn't hurt, but he's sure acting like he did something.

Image
The referee quickly goes to the monitor and watches an old Orlando Magic game on NBA TV (that's the only explanation I can come up with, because that's not a picture from our game on that screen).

Image

Image
It's no good! We win! Of course, being up four it didn't really matter, but it's the thought that counts. I finished with 27 points, 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 turnovers, a good counter to Rose's 25 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 turnovers.

Game four on the horizon, and we're going for the sweep at home.

Game four! We're up 3-0! We can do this!

Image
That's basically what I told the team before the game. We CAN do this! We MUST do this! Let's end it here!

Image
Yeah, basically that. This is where we are.

Image
I started cold, scoring just 2 points in the 1st quarter on 33% shooting with 1 assist. I upped that to 8 points and 3 assists on 66% shooting by the half as we took a 14 point lead into the 3rd quarter.

Image
I only scored 2 points in the 3rd quarter but finally hit my stride in the 4th, which is totally counter-intuitive for me. I, though not covered in detail here, am just about the least clutch player in the NBA. I tend to start hot and go ice cold partway through the 3rd quarter and the rest of the game. It happens so often it's crazy. I'm the anti-Kyrie Irving. Not tonight though, as I scored 9 points in the 4th to finish with 19 points, 4 assists and 4 steals on 56% shooting. Oh, and we won.

Image
We win! NBA Champion, everyone!

Image
Yeah! Gimme that trophy! I didn't get Player of the Game or Finals MVP (both went to Kevin Martin) but that's ok. I'm happy just to win the title.

Image
We made the trip to the White House to visit the President, which was nice. It's odd that he won't look me in the eye, though. Oh that's right, I just beat his Bulls down something fierce. That explains it. I have to be honest and say that these weren't the Bulls at their best. Courtney Lee had knee tendonitis and Joakim Noah had a separated shoulder. Either of them being healthy could have changed things some, but I still think we would have won.

Image
The next season has begun and I'm still a Rocket (they picked up my rookie option year) and... this happened. That's a slight! We're the defending champs, where do they get off putting us at 29th in the Power Rankings? Of course we were ranked 30th to start last year, and we all know how that ended.

Image
One more thing - I'm on the cover of SI! That means I'll be in a near full-body cast by December. Thanks, mysterious magazine cover curse!

Time for another year!

What comes next? DISNEY WORLD!

Oh wait, no - season three comes next.

Image
Here's our starting lineup to start the season. Notice something missing? No Kevin Martin. Great, there goes my security blanket. We lost the league MVP and NBA Finals MVP so I'll have to pick up my game. I came out an scored 8 points in the 1st quarter to put us up by 2 entering the 2nd quarter. I got placed at point guard to start that quarter and I... wait... WHAT?!

Image
YOU'RE STILL HERE?! Why are you coming off the bench??? WHY SCREW WITH A CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTER????! I don't understand this team anymore. On the other hand, hello security blanket! I hit him for three assists in three and a half minutes before halftime, and he entered intermission leading us with 16 points.

Image
I had big trouble with the pick and roll as point guard, and Mo Williams was a general pain to guard. On this play in the 3rd quarter I watched him walk the ball up before making my move.

Image

Image
I reach for the ball and tip it out of his hands.

Image

Image
Backcourt violation!

Image
Just walk away Mo. I'm done playing with you.

Image
I do have to share this play with you. It's a glorious example of a showboating play gone so very wrong.

Image
We're on a fast break so I tossed an alley-oop to Patrick Patterson to cap a run.

Image
Jump! Pat Patt, jump! I threw that for you! Go get it!

Image
Awwwwww crap. Someone has to go get that.

Image
Oh what the heck...

Image

Image
... yeah. That didn't work. It bounced back into Jeremy Lamb's hands for a layup so it wasn't a total loss but I'm not trying that again.

I finished with Player of the Game, 22 points, 4 assists and 2 steals in the win. We're off to a good start.

Re: Daniel Diary Season 2 - Season 3 Underway

Postby Alphasim on Sat Feb 09, 2013 4:53 pm

A couple more games in and a disturbing trend is developing.

Image
We've been falling behind early allot. I mean, allot. As in every game. A game against Denver went to overtime before we got the win (my line: 19p, 1r, 2a, 3s 8-19/2-6).

Image
Against the Bucks I got in a shootout with Monta Ellis to get us the win late (my line: 20p, 0r, 1a, 1to, 9-14/2-4)

Image

Image

Image

Image
Our matchup with the Clippers in LA was frustrating on so many levels. I scored well, but that's all I did well (my line: 19p, 0r, 0a, 1to, 8-15/3-4). I couldn't get anyone open for a shot, couldn't make plays, and my normally solid defense was suspect. What happened at the end killed me though.

I don't have pics of it, but here's what happened. We went on a 15-6 run to end the 3rd and start the 4th quarter just to tie the game up at 46. After a trading baskets the rest of the quarter, Patrick Patterson got hold of a loose ball with 18 seconds left. I called for the ball, set to try and win the game (yeah, I know. I'm simultaneously stupid and stubborn that way). I dribbled down the clock and got a high screen from Pat Patt to get Jeff Green to switch on to me. I faked a drive and pulled up for a step back three. No prizes for guessing how that went. Coach promptly pulled my dumb butt and we lost in the 1.2 seconds I left on the clock (no idea how - I was pouting on the bench and didn't see what happened).

Image
At the post game presser, the reporters grilled me on how we could have won if I'd hit that shot. Rather then answer, I just started singing.

"'Well I'm heart broken, check it and see...
coulda won if I had hit that three.
Come on, maybe one day I'll knock one down.
I'm heart broken, heart broken..."

The reporters laughed at me. I'm not sure how to take that. I do know that I have to get my act together if we're going to win another title this year. Right now I'm a poor man's Nick Young - all scoring, nothing else checked on the boxscore. On to the next game!

No pics this time, because I'm bummed. My team, a year removed from a championship, looks like crap. We just got schooled by Sacramento. In the Kings game I scored 4 points on 22% shooting. I had seven assists and three steals but coming off the bench (yup, got benched for missing that shot at the end of the Clips game) threw me off completely.

Here's the deal. I'm not happy in Houston, but we did win a title last year. Do I owe it to them to stick this out and try again, or should I ask for a trade and start fresh somewhere else? If so, who should I try to get to? Lastly, do I request a trade, or outright demand it? Opinions?

Two more games down, starting with the Blazers in Portland.

Image
I started this game, which was a pleasant surprise. I had an off-game shooting (to me), scoring 11 on 50% shooting. It wasn't a bad game and I was glad to be starting again. We won this game by double digits. (my line: 11p, 3r, 2a, 5/10)

Image
Next we found ourselves in Phoenix. I was sitting again, making me rather irritated at coach. Why do I sit, start, and then sit again? This is doing nothing for my rhythm. In any case I didn't take a shot until late in the 2nd quarter while I went with the flow of the game. I sat most of the 3rd quarter but played all of the 4th.

Image
I shot 63%, which was nice but I missed my first free throw of the year. Darn! I had made every one up to that point (I forget how many atm), so that was disappointing. I only missed one of four, though as we won handily. (my line: 13p, 1r, 3a, 5/8)

If coach could ever make up his mind if I'm a starter or a role player, I'll be happy. Until then, two more wins make me feel good anyway. One thing of note: I'm not feeling the need to jack up shots anymore. I'm less inclined to just try and shoot us into (and out of) of games, and feel like I'm playing much more under control. Also, since that 19 point, zero assist game, I'm averaging 9.3 points and 4 assists (skewed slightly by that 7 assist game). I don't know if the teams we're playing aren't that good or what, but I'm seeing - and hitting - passing lanes that I wasn't finding earlier, which is cutting my shots down and getting everyone involved, even when I don't get the assist directly. I like this development and I hope to see it continue.

Heya everyone, I've been busy ballin' and the games I've played have been wildly different from one another.

Image
First up, in Milwaukee I got two blocks on Brandon Jennings in a win. (My line: 16p,0r,2a,2b,7/14 shooting)

Image
The next game was a trick to win, as Andrea Bargnani went off in the 2nd half for 15 points, 21 total for the game. I did my best to match him, and we won. (My line: 21p,1r,3a,2to,9/14 shooting)

Image
Look at this picture. Savor it. Admire it. What is it? My first game winner! Sure, it wasn't technically at the buzzer, but this was the shot that put us up 1 against Orlando, and we held on. (My line: 11p,3r,1a,2to,5/10 shooting)

Image
Here's where we're going to be spending the most time. We played the Heat in Miami and I knew it was going to be a screw game going in (as in, the AI was committed to not letting us win). I didn't care. I was going to try anyway. Here, I shook the King to the floor before canning a jump shot. Don't feel bad for him, though... feel bad for poor Jeremy Lin, who got posterized whenever I missed a defensive assignment, usually on Wade.

Image
Oops.

Image
Crap. Sorry Jeremy!

Image
LeBron, you too? At least I tried this time.

Image
In the end we lost as the Heat went red hot and my teammates became butterfingers. Ah well. Get 'em next time.

We do need to make a trade, but I'm not sure I'm the one who needs to go. What we need is an interior presence. Asik got hurt a week ago and we've been getting chewed up inside game after game, giving up way too many layups and offensive boards. If we can tighten that up and... y'know... get someone to help when I kind of, sort of slip up on my perimeter D and let my man go to the hole... which doesn't happen that often (yes, it does  ), we might be in better shape.

In the mean time, we played the Cavs recently (and lost), and while I had a respectable stat night (My line: 15p,4r,2a,2s,1b,0to,7/13 shooting), they beat us up inside again. I recorded my highlights from the game to share, so you can get a look at my play style. On thing you'll notice is my new favorite move, the Jordan-on-Russell style push off/step back J. I use it Waiters a few times, most notably around the 22 second mark of the video. Take a look at some of my better moments from the game.

It's gone. It's all gone... my jump shot has abandoned me. Why, I don't know, but it has.

The pinnacle of this revelation was a pair of games against the Hornets where I finished with a combined 4/18 shooting. Ouch.

Image
My latest game was against the Knicks, and this shot exemplifies the only shot I can hit right now. Mid-range, long distance, bunnies, it doesn't matter. I can't hit anything.

So, in my third year, I have to reinvent my shot. I went into the gym and got a whole new J. New step in, new release, you name it. Will it work? I won't know until my next game, but I will say this: in my last practice session, we had to replace the net.

Good sign, people.

The time has come to try out my new shot! The Jazz will be my test subjects and the Utah crowd shall bear witness - as will all of you.

We got pounded in the 1st quarter, but were only down four entering the 2nd. I hadn't taken a shot up to this point, but once I started... look out.

Image
There it is, folks - my new shot. It's designed for a quick, high release. Best of all, it works.

Image
I dropped three treys in about four minutes of the 2nd quarter, earning my first ever "On Fire" icon. Yes!

Unfortunately, the game isn't two quarters long. We were outscored by five in the 3rd to go down two entering the fourth, in which Mo Williams and I had a little showdown.

Image
We were tied when I hit this in-traffic layup to put us up around the three minute mark.

Image
To say I was pumped to be back on top of my game was an understatement.

Image
I was really feeling it after hitting Chandler Parsons for a layup. Sadly, this didn't last. In the last minute and a half, this was how the sequence played out.

- I bring the ball up court, pass it to a Jazz player but he tips it out of bounds. 1 near turnover.
- On the ensuing inbounds I fumble the ball in traffic of Patterson picks it up and dunks. 2 near turnovers.
- Mo Williams - on fire by now - hits a tough J to tie the game again.
- I lose my dribble at the top of the key but Lin recovers it. 3 near turnovers.
- I promptly get the ball back and attempt a spin move, losing the ball to the Jazz. Finally gave the ball up.

Dammit. I could NOT control the ball for the life of me down the stretch. Late we give up a dunk-and-one to Al Jefferson to go down two with under 15 seconds.

Stop. Let's just stop right here. It's buzzer beater time. Winning time. I have blown so many of these chances of the years that I could have my very own Sportscenter Special. I KNOW better than to take this shot. I just know better. Hit Parsons on the wing, give it to Lin and allow him to create. Do anything but take the shot.

So what do I do? I dribble the clock down and take a fairly open 3. No prizes for guessing that it clanked off the iron and we lost. I'm the single least clutch player in the NBA.

Image
Oh well. Get 'em next time.

Something had to change. Something's not right. What can I do? I don't want to leave the team. I need to switch things up. OH! I know!

Image
This was me. Was. It's time for a new me!

Image
Image change! New hair, new shave, cut down on the arm bands... I feel refreshed. I feel like a new man. Let's go, it's time to take on the Grizz!

Image
I felt lighter, more mobile. Nothing has changed but my look but I feel like I got a career reset. This was actually a calculated move - in the past four years of playing this mode, my career always got a kick in the rear after my first hair cut. Dunno why. Maybe I'm the anti-Sampson.

Image
We trailed the Grizzlies through much of the game before catching them in the 3rd quarter behind some hot shooting by me. We eventually pulled away and won. (My line: 21p,3r,4a,1s,1to,8/15 shooting)

Image
This proves that I was imagining my December slump. After winning Player of the Week in the 1st week of the month I've struggled.

Image
For kicks, here are my last six games.

I'm feeling better than I have in weeks. Look out league!
