Josh Selby Earns Co-MVP Honors in Las Vegas Summer League
Congratulations to Josh Selby who picked up a much deserved co-MVP award for his play in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Selby, who is entering his second year in the NBA, played some amazing basketball, giving us Grizzlies fans reason to believe that maybe -- just maybe -- we might have an outside shooting threat on our hands. Considering, of course, Selby hit over 70 percent of his 3-point attempts (24-for-34) and made at least 5 threes in each of the four games he played. Well. Done. Sir.
Now, I'm not going to try and sell you on Selby as being a 2-plus per game 3-point shooting threat over an 82-game span, but he can certainly help provide a nice outside threat for the worst 3-point shooting team in the NBA - Us!!
He shares the honor with Blazers rookie Damian Lillard who in his own right deserved recognition for his play, averaging 26.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in four games. Now, let's not get too wrapped up in arguing whether or not Selby deserved to be the singular MVP, considering he led the SL in scoring at 27.5 points per game, because, really, who cares. All that matters is that he developed his game and now looks like he's going to play an important role for us this season. That's what matters most. Because when he's playing meaningful basketball in late-April you're not even going to remember that he had to share MVP honors with Lillard. It won't even matter.
What matters is that he played some great basketball and ultimately made us forget about O.J. Mayo -- if only for a week!

Draft strength: Top-heavy. Not a deep draft but has some serious talent up the top. L.Reynolds and W.Gooding are regarded as the top 2 prospects, and whoever is picking #1 will have a tough decision to make. No championship team can go without a center like Reynolds, but then again how good can young Gooding become? There are some decent role players sprinkled throughout the 1st and 2nd round, but there's not many serious team contributors beyond the lottery.
Lou Reynolds is 21 years old Center out of UCLA. He is the next big Center in the NBA. In an era where the center position is relatively weak, Reynolds might be challenging Dwight Howard for All-NBA votes eventually. He is old-school back-to-basket style of center. Many experts compare him to Shaq without athleticism or Ewing without shooting ablity. He has that rare combination of size, skill, strength and smarts that most centers just don't have. He can easily back his defenders down with ease and banks in hook-shots. He is great low-post defender and rebounder. He is also a pretty skilled passer and ball handler for his size. He has big soft hands to catch balls and excellent touch inside. But like every player he also has weaknesses. He is not athletic, his mid-range jumpshot is not a threat and he is somewhat mechanical and predictable offensively. He IS NBA ready. Great all-round post player, could become a perinnial All-star center.
Wade Gooding is 19 years old Shooting Guard from Florida. Gooding is the next superstar athlete in the league. He is a flashy and explosive wonderkid. Being another "one-and-done" player, he is somewhat raw given his age, but it can be expected that down the road he will be a team leader. He is spectacular slasher and high-flyer. He modelled his game after Kobe 'Bean' Bryant. He has many strengths... Instantly an elite level athlete in the NBA. (think of a 6'5" D.Rose). Wade has excellent ability to finish inside. He slashes his way to the basket with his ridiculous quickness and spin & hesitation moves. Wade also gets his hand on stray passes due to quickness and anticipation. He, much like Kobe, will demand the ball for late game situations, even at a young age. But with such young age he has some weaknesses... His shot selection has been questioned, his defense isn't horrible but needs to improve. He's not a great shooter yet. Should make an instant impact based on natural talent alone. Destined to become a superstar. Can he live up to the hype?
Bill Daily is 21 years old Point Guard out of Long Island. Daily is a little dynamo on the court. He plays with incredible heart and energy. Throws his body around, hustling, bustling and getting in his man's face. A college senior that broke records for steals. He is defensive floor general. His NBA comparision is Rajon Rondo. Not bad, eh? Excellent defensively. Could be among the league leaders in steals someday given the minutes. Good playmaker and ball handler. Incredible speed & quickness. Plays without fear. Will drive to the basket, dive for loose balls, and take charges. Mastered the art of getting his shots off amongst the trees. Not a scorer, poor shooting ability. Undersized at 6'0". Durability? How many hits can his body take? May not take kindly to a bench role. Looks like Ice-T.
Perry Hansen is 20 years old Small Forward out of Gorgetown. Hansen is a raw athletic wing who specializes in getting his hand on loose balls. A player who will be used mostly on the defensive end, he can also finish inside on offense. He is athletic defensive small forward. Shawn Marion anybody? Can really leap, therefore can sky up for rebounds, blocks, and dunks. Good potential. Good defender. Can finish with the best of 'em. Offensively raw, doesn't have the scoring instinct yet. Bad shooter. Ball handling needs to improve. Bites on pumpfakes. Has the ability to log minutes at PF if needed. Should become a starter who can contribute in multiple ways.
Mario Salvaderi is 22 year old Inernational legend from Italy. Salvaderi is already a basketball legend over in Italy because of his incredible shooting stroke and scoring smarts. He is the kind of player that needs a solid team structure to be effective. You wouldn't isolate with him. Most of his work is done off the ball with spot ups and positioning. He is like Peja Stojaković 2.0 in Peja's prime. Instantly one of the best shooters in the NBA. Savvy offensive player. NBA ready. Can catch and shoot, shoot off the pullup, or execute a stepback shot. Poor defensively. Limited potential. Poor athleticism. Purely an outside scorer, has no business scoring inside. He wears his famous "shooting glove" on his shooting hand. Has an unorthodox but deadly accurate release. A star in europe, but will probably never be a star in NBA. Most likely a career 6th man or fringe starter.
These are projected Top 5 prospects for next year's NBA Draft. Next 5 next week.

O.J. Mayo to Mavericks: Why Memphis Grizzlies Won't Miss Their Old Sixth Man
O.J. Mayo was an assumed loss for the Memphis Grizzlies going into this offseason. Grizzlies fans couldn’t reasonably believe he’d be back, especially after Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace declined to extend a qualifying offer to Mayo. When Mayo signed with the Dallas Mavericks, Griz fans couldn’t feel anything.
Indeed, Mayo was one of the guys helping push the 2011 Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games. He averaged 14.3 points per game and scored at least 14 points in five games.
Sure, he was the only reliable scorer coming off the Grizzlies’ bench. He averaged 12.6 points per game, more than seven points per game more than Memphis’ next highest scoring bench player.
But Mayo wasn’t a very efficient scorer. He needed 11.4 field-goal attempts and 2.6 free-throw attempts per game to get those 12.6 points per game. Also, his 40.8 percent shooting wasn’t impressive.
Wallace has done well preparing for the post-Mayo era.
He drafted Tony Wroten, who, like Mayo, is a combo guard who handles the ball and drops a good amount of buckets. As he showcased in his debut versus Clippers scoring 15 points shooting 55,5 % from the field and 3-3 beyond the arc.
The key signing for the backcourt was Jerryd Bayless, who, also like Mayo, is a combo guard who handles the ball and puts up points. But he was traded away since Selby emerged as a solid 15-minutes player of the bench during his co-MVP session in Los Angeles Summer League.
Josh Selby could be another nice scorer off the bench if he comes around after a quiet rookie season. His hot moments in the past season came in the NBDL for the Reno Bighorns, for which he averaged 25.1 points per game. On Monday, he flashed his scoring potential again by scoring 35 points in a Summer League game.
Wallace told The Commercial Appeal that Selby could be a good scorer for the Grizzlies next season.
“He puts points on the board,” Wallace said. “He’s another wild card who might find his way into doing something for you.”
Lionel Hollins will have a few options for bench scoring next season. Selby could throw in some points if he shows growth. Wroten can at least attack the basket a bit. And Arthur is also a good inside offensive presence.
With all that, Grizzlies fans will hear about the guy who used to wear No. 32 and say, “O.J. who?”

After last weeks draft preview we are giving you the next 5 in NBA '12 Draft.
Cedric Archibald is 21 years old Power Forward out of Mexico. Archibald is a unique talent. Somewhat similar to the european style of post player. He is the faceup PF. Has a knack for getting the ball in the basket in a variety of ways anywhere from mid range. Not an explosive athlete but has pretty good footspeed. Good size mixed with a high release makes his shot near unblockable. A surprisingly mediocre rebounder and shot blocker for his size. Motor has been questioned. A bit soft. Instantly one of the best midrange shooting big men in the league. It's doubtful he'll ever be a star, but can definitely contribute offensively. Could be a starter some day.
Ben Walls is 22 years old Shooting Guard from Connecticut. Walls is a solid SG/SF prospect. Very fundamentally sound and not particularly outstanding. Good mid-range scorer. Pretty good ball handler. Good offensive IQ. Not that athletic. Jack of all trades, master of none. Walls is a decent player who could pan out to be a contributer, but it's unlikely that he'd become an all-star or anything like that.
Brook Augmon is 22 years old Small Forward out of Pittsburgh. Augmon is the ultimate role player. He's definitely not a glamorous player but he works hard and does all the little things on the court that make a team win. Whether it's setting the screens, taking the charge, defending the opposing teams' best scorer, Augmon does it. Great defender. Can knock down the 3. An absolute gym rat, great strength. Poor scoring touch. Poor ball handling. Not athletic. Augmon's potential is limited and may not become much more than rotation player, but he is very useful. Perfect for contending teams.
Leslie Richmond is 21 years old Small Forward out of Duke. Haywood is smooth scoring forward with good touch. Great shooting touch. Can get his shot off in a number of ways. Doesn't have good athleticism, but it's not horrid either. Doesn't contribute in many ways other than scoring. Opens up the floor with the ability to shoot from mid-range, 3pt, and the post, and off the dribble. Could develop into a great 6th man or fringe starter.
Will Haywood is 21 year old Point Guard from Arizona. Haywood is a flashy pass-first point guard who is a great fit for up-tempo teams surrounded by great finishers that he can throw lobs to. Elite level passing ability. Good shooter. Pretty good size for a PG at 6'3". Average ball handler for a PG. Lacks strength and ability to finish inside. Not a great defender. Not that quick for a PG. If he can develop into a starter, he could be among the assist leaders. Wont be happy with a bench role.
These are projected Top 10 prospects, combined with last weeks preview, for next year's NBA Draft. Next 4 next week to round up the lottery.
