DRAFT RECAP
Overview
In one of the most interesting drafts in recent years, many teams surrounded themselves with young talent to help their team grow. Of course the headline of the night was Kyrie Irving of Duke being selected #1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, who still hope they can regain some form since the departure of LeBron James. The first round was wild with surprising selections as well as a number of trades, while the second round seemed to ease up a bit.
Other Highlights:
- There were many European talents in this years draft, including 4 consecutive picks (#7-#10) all being prospects from Europe
- The Nuggets stockpiled their team with young talent throughout the night from all of the draft picks they acquired from the Melo trade last season
They draft two Georgia Bulldogs (Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie) who both figure to have big roles, possibly starters
Surprisingly they drafted Justin Jones at 23, and then drafted 2 more PF (a total of 4 PF) for the night- The Michael Jordan owned Bobcats were also very active as well acquire new players both from the draft and from trades
- The Spurs look to be in a youth movement picking up a variety of young Forwards as well as the sensation Albano Spagnoletti from Argentina
- With the departure of Nenad Kristic and the retirement of Shaq O'Neal, the Celtics selected the big young man Jonas Valanciunas from Lithuania to fill the void, as well as 3 other bigs
Transactions
There were trades galore tonight with many teams, such as the Cavaliers, Bobcats, Kings, and Pistons, all being involved in more than one trade on the night.
- Everyone thought the Cavaliers would have two top 10 talents in the draft, but they ended up trading away the #6 pick for Ed Davis from the Raptors. This trade made it easier for them to move JJ Hickson at the end of the night in order to fill the void at SF by acquiring Omri Casspi from the Kings
- The Bobcats shook things up by finally moving Stephen Jackson to the Bucks and acquired Ron Artest and Mo Williams...their only cost, trading away the #10 Pick Jan Vesely who some call "The European Blake Griffin"
- After the trade Ron Artest was asked to comment, he said, "You mean I get to be on Jordan's team? The Michael Jordan? I mean wow, me and him will be awesome together.....What do you mean he retired? Naw can't be."
Reporter: "Ron, who are you talking to?"
Ron Artest: "My alter ego...Metta World Peace"
The Bobcats followed that up by acquiring veteran Ben Wallace from the Clippers, who despite the old age played a vital role for the Clippers in the post season when DeAndre Jordan went down- The Pacers swapped picks and PF's with the Pistons in order to reacquire Al Harrington and move an uphappy Ersan Ilyasova. The pick the Pacers acquired was eventually traded to the Spurs for George Hill
- The Jazz traded away the #19 Pick to the Pistons to reacquire Ronnie Brewer, who had his best days as a Jazz
- While the Timberwolves were rumored to be moving Wayne Ellington, they were also able to trade away Jonny Flynn to make room in the backcourt for Ricky Rubio
- Rudy Fernandez threatened to leave for Spain this season and the TrailBlazers were trying to find a new place for him him, they found a destination..Dallas
- Rivaling as the biggest trade of the night, the Clippers acquired Andre Iguodala from the Sixers, who had a big following out last season after finishing near the bottom of the league
The Sixers are in full rebuild mode, but have a promising future with young talent at almost each position after acquiring UCLA standout Vince Sleepy- The only trade in the 2nd Round involved the Bulls moving sharpshooter Kyle Korver for the #36 Pick, that allowed them to draft a SF in DJ Kennedy
NLSCers
Seven of those drafted tonight have a common bond as they all played together before in an underground tournament known simply as NLSC. There were some surprising moves that happened with these individuals, but they are now all in the NBA and now we can all see what they will do with their carers.
- Jerome "Warlock" Barkorn - The top prospect of this group went #5 overall to the Utah Jazz. While his dreams of starting might have to be on pause, he is extremely happy with the opportunity he has been given. Sources say new head coach Lewis Battle is pleading with either Devin Harris or Jerome Barkorn to be willing to play to SG position so they can play together. If that does not workout, the Jazz brought back Ronnie Brewer to start instead.
- George Koukoulis - To George Koukoulis (GM) surprise, the Cavaliers traded the #6 pick which gave the Bulls GM the perfect opportunity to draft his cousin of the same name. While George the player will have to wait his turn behind Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon, he is extremely happy to reunite with his cousin and write a new history in the Windy City
- Albano Spagnoletti - Surprisingly another overseas player with family ties in the NBA found his way to reunite as the Spurs new owner Thierry Tirieux traded away their young point guard George Hill so that his cousin can meet and play along side the French sensation that is Tony Parker. Albano is expected to back up both Parker and Maggette
- Vince "Money" Sleepy - Maybe it is because he changed his name from the last mock draft, but the UCLA center experienced the biggest fall of all the prospects in the draft. After being rumored to be going to the his hometown LA Lakers (who decided to go with a young PG instead) he had a chance again to play in his hometown but with the Clippers. The Clippers are just a season removed from being a rebuilding team, which meant Sleepy would have to be stuck behind Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon. Sleepy's hopes of making a team his own might still be possible as he was traded shortly after to the Sixers where he will join fellow rookie Harisson Barnes and last years rookie standout Evan Turner
- Justin Jones - Jones has a great opportunity to play in Denver, especially after many GM's took notice of him after his Draft combine workouts, but he will have to fight for it if he wants to start as the Nuggets drafted a total of 4 PF on the night
- Zee Otoo - Zee Otoo got drafted by the Wizards, which is neither his hope of his hometown Bobcats or a strong contender. However Zee could find himself as the starting SF, depending on how the Wizards treat free agency
- Marko Jenjic - The lone NLSC prospect expected to go in the 2nd Round was surprisingly picked by the Bulls. Early in the workouts Jenjic challenged fellow NLSC George Koukoulis. Now they are on the same team.
Biggest Rise/Fall of the night: Chris Singleton
