CHAPTER 2
The 2011 Draft

Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
Inside the Knicks' draft room
June 23, 2011

"If you accept this job you have to be mentally strong, there will be lots of challenges and tribulations but you have to stay focused. THEY will force you to do things that won't make sense. But you've got to always try and do what is best for the organization and the fans. And don't forget to always watch your back kid."

Those words struck Zoilo the most. It came from his mentor and former Knicks President Donnie Walsh before he retired last month. He still wasn't sure what Donnie was implying but for him, "so far so good." James Dolan has given him full control of the team and hadn't questioned any of his moves.

"Sir, Mr. Dolan is on line he says he wants to speak with you," June, his secretary said while handing him the phone. But Zoilo didn't respond and was still staring into space.

"SIR! He says this is urgent," she exclaimed which brought him back to his senses.

"Oh, Sorry June. I Just got caught in my thoughts, hand me the phone," Z said.

He had just drafted rebounding machine Kenneth Faried out of Morehead State in the first round and was just minutes away from deciding who will be the Knicks second round pick for 2011. The Grizzlies just selected Markieff Morris as the 40th pick of the draft which leaves New York with only one prospect left on their list.

"Hello sir, this is Zoilo. What's this important thing you want to talk about?"

Dolan's answer was mind-boggling.

"WHAT?? You want me to draft a guy our scouts didn't even lay an eye on? This is a joke right?" Zoilo questioned.

"No! I'm dead serious about this. I absolutely love the kid, I think he will be awesome for our team." Dolan said.

"But sir we have a pretty good chance of drafting Jordan Wiliams, he'll be a steal this late in the draft! We can't let this opportunity get away. critics would assume that this was all a publicity stunt," he pleaded to the Knicks owner.

"I don't care what they say. I am the OWNER of this team and I call the shots around here, just do it or join the unemployment line!" Dolan shouted as he hung up his phone.

"FUCK! I'll be burned at the stake for this," an obviously furious Zoilo shouted.

Now he understands what Walsh told him when he took over. What Dolan wants Dolan gets, and there is nothing you can do about it. Z was still fuming when an NBA representative knocked on their door.

"Sir, the Knicks are up. You have 2 minutes to make your pick," the guy said.

"Man, this is bullshit..." Z said to himself.

Moments later ...

"With the 46th pick of the 2011 NBA draft, the New York Knicks select....."

I wanted you to draft Jimmer, because he would be awesome on your team playing alongside stat and melo. And I also want to find out who is the mysterious 2nd round pick :)

Knicks Select Faried, Thomas in 2011 NBA Draft
June 23, 2011

            Image

New York, NY -- After weeks of anticipation and endless pundit projection, the 2011 NBA Draft finally arrived
Thursday.

And with the 16th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft the New York Knicks selected Kenneth Faried.

The senior out of Morehead State averaged 17.3 points and 14.5 rebounds and was named to the second-team
All-American by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He carried his team up to the Round of 32 in
the 2011 NCAA Tournament while showing his relentless pursuit of the basketball. Faried has even drawn
comparisons to Dennis Rodman because of his tenacity in grabbing rebounds.

"I'm really happy to be with the Knicks, I grew up in Newark so it's like home for me," Faried said who was met
with loud cheers when his name was announced as the 16th pick. "I'm really excited to play with Melo, Amar'e
and Chauncey, it's a dream come true. I'll continue to work hard and do my best to help the team in any way I
can."

Contrary to the warmth response for Faried, New York's second round pick Isaiah Thomas was greeted with a
chorus of boos and violent reactions, as fans thought of it as a mockery.

Its no secret that former Knicks president and coach Isiah Thomas, whom Isaiah was ironically named after, is
the one being blamed for Knicks' dark years which started in 2004 and lasted through to 2008.

"No disrespect to Thomas, he's a talented kid and all but we New Yorkers are sick of hearing that name," a fan
who attended the draft said. "It's like the management have no respect for what we fans feel, it's a cruel joke."

Thomas played for the Washington Huskies and is the smallest player in the draft at 5'9". Despite his height he
was able to lead his team in scoring, assists, steals and minutes. He was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award,
awarded to the nation’s top point guard, as a junior.

Faried will wear jersey number 35 and Thomas will sport the number 11. The roster now stands at 11.

Jimmer got picked early. Dude is a pure shooter, would've really helped my bench scoring.

Nice coverage. The Thomas pick is not beyond reason in such a weak draft. Going for a player like him midway through 2nd round is worth the gamble. Best case scenario you've got a poor man's JJ Barea.

Czech Prospect Jan Vesely Taken at Number 1
Posted June 24 2011 1:20AM

    Image
David Stern moments before announcing the first pick of the 2011 NBA
    draft.

NEWARK, NJ -- It was a wild night in the packed Prudential Center last night; sixty fresh faces were welcomed to the NBA and along with it were some surprising draft day trades.

And with the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards selected Jan Vesely, a 6-11, 230-pound combo forward from the Czech Republic. It made him the second international player to be selected as the first pick in the draft.

Vesely posted 10.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 23.5 minutes while playing for the Partizan Belgrade in the Adriatic league. He also appeared in 14 Euroleague games last year and averaged 9.2 points, 1.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 26.9 minutes of action.

"I have been following Jan Vesely's progress in the last years and I have the feeling he'll give us all plenty of reasons to keep a close eye on him for many years to come. He is that rare kind of player that can play in any position, a natural basketball talent" said Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld.

Vesely also won the FIBA Europe Young Men's Player of the Year award for 2010 edging out three-time winner Ricky Rubio of Spain. The Czech was supposed to enter last year's NBA draft but withdrew citing his desire “continue to learn.”

"I felt that I should wait another year," Vesely said. "In Partizan, the coach believes in me. And after going through another season, I have great confidence and trust that I am now more psychologically ready for the transition to the NBA."

Meanwhile, the Toronto Raptors selected Kyrie Irving of Duke as the second pick of the 2011 NBA draft. For now, Irving would probably play as a third stringer behind veterans Jose Calderon and Jerryd Bayless but he will undoubtedly be the Raptors' point guard of the future and possibly the new face of their franchise.

Former Arizona Wildcat Derrick Williams was picked third by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Plenty of insiders believe that Williams has the chance to take over the starting small forward spot which was left void due to LeBron James' transfer to "South Beach."

And in one of the night's shockers, the Charlotte Bobcats drafted Alec Burks with the fourth pick and then moments later traded his rights and cash considerations to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the 6th pick, Anthony Tolliver and the rights to Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio. Charlotte then drafted Turkish center Enes Kanter out of Kentucky.

Another note worthy transaction that occurred was between the Rockets and the Thunder. Houston traded away Luis Scola and the 7th pick of the draft in exchange for OKC's second year center Cole Aldrich and the 2011 draft's 21st pick.

Below is the complete draft board along with the draft day trades that occurred.

That's the main reason. Having another "Thomas" in New York makes a nice storyline.
