WEST: ROUND 1
LAC Wins 4-1(2) LOS ANGELES
CLIPPERSvs. (7) PHOENIX SUNS Staples Center - Los Angeles, CA May 2, 2011 Matchups Baron Davis PG Steve Nash Eric Gordon SG Vince Carter Wilson Chandler SF Grant Hill Blake Griffin PF Antonie Walker Ben Wallace C Mehmet Okur DEFENSE SENDS SUNS HOME, CLIPPERS ADVANCE
THE FACTS: Both teams offense started out very slow, more so for the Clippers. While both teams traded baskets early on, the Suns eventually were able to catch some breathing room especially at the half where they lead by 11 points. The Clippers, without DeAndre Jordan, were losing the rebounding battle, which only made things worse each time they missed shot after shot. Blake Griffin was having a solid game, but the Suns defense was able to focus all their attention on him. To start the second half, VDN decided to play full-court defense the rest of the way, something not commonly used, but it worked. The level of defensive intensity grew and the Suns started missing shots and having their passes deflected. The Clippers fed of the turnovers and missed shots to eventually get back in the game. Win only a minute left in the 3Q the Clippers were within 6 points, which was when Eric Gordon hit 2 consecutive 3Pointers after missing his first 10 attempts! The game was tied going into the 4Q and then Blake Griffin threw down a monster dunk to lead again since the 1Q. From then on momentum was completely on the Clippers side as they even started to hit 3Pointers. The Clippers made 7 3Pointers in the quarter after making only 1 in the first half. The Suns were sticking around, but the Clippers were in complete control and closed out the game and are now thinking of the next round.
THE STAT: Missing DeAndre, the Clippers were out rebounded 51 to 45
QUOTABLE: VDN on using full court press defense, "I told them, play hard defense, get back in the game by making it hard for them. Just put in all of your energy, send them home, and then we can rest while we wait for the next round."
HOT: Clippers finally got hot from deep in the second half shooting 55%
NOT: Eric Gordon could not hit a single shot beyond the arc in the first half, missing all 7, he missed a total of 10 attempts before making 2 in a row
GOOD MOVE: While Eric Gordon's shot was off, he threw down some epic dunks, including one where he posterizes both Aaron Brooks and Robin Lopez
BAD MOVE: In the 3Q the Clippers were making a comeback and tipped the ball away from the Suns with only 5 seconds left on the shot clock, after the scramble, the Clippers somehow allowed Steve Nash to find Grant Hill for an open slam dunk

Round 1
Series Analysis
West:
(1) OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER defeat (8) SAN ANTONIO SPURS - [4-3]
Analysis: One of the youngest up and coming teams against one of the top veteran teams went head-to-head and at first it appeared as if the veteran experience had enough of an advantage to upset the series against the West's #1 team. But with the Spurs unfortunately losing Tim Duncan in Game 5, things did not look good for new owner Thierry Tirieux. Manu Ginobili was able to lead the team in Game 6 to force a Game 7 back in Oklahoma City, but in a long 7 game series, youth prevailed.
(2) LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS defeats (7) PHOENIX SUNS - [3-1]
Analysis: There was no denying that a new era has arrived with Blake Griffin in town as the Clippers took care of business in Game 1 and then completely dominated the Suns in Game 2 by 32 points. The Suns were looking for revenge at home but some clutch 3Point shooting game the Clippers a 3-0 lead. The Suns would take Game 4 to avoid the sweep, but strong defense by the Clippers allowed them to wrap it up at home in the next game.
(3) NEW ORLEANS HORNETS defeat (6) UTAH JAZZ - [4-3]
Analysis: The Jazz are without Deron Williams, but that did not stop Jerry Sloan from running his traditional offense through Devin Harris. The series literally went back and forth without any real regards to homecourt. In the end Chris Paul lead his team to a round 1 victory. Critics say that Sloan should have utilized rookie Derrick Favors talents more, but it would have been hard trying to figure enough playing time behind Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson.
(5) LOS ANGELES LAKERS defeats (4) DALLAS MAVERICKS - [4-1]
Analysis: The Lakers came out strong right from Game 1 when they took homecourt advantage away from the Mavericks, which resulted in Dirk Nowitzki responding with a big game in Game 2. But all that did was ignite Kobe Bryant to lift his team on the next three games to complete the upset and advance into the 2nd Round of the Playoffs.
East:
(1) MIAMI HEAT defeat (8) DETROIT PISTONS - [4-2]
Analysis: With Chris Kaman and Rodney Stuckey each returned from injuries during the series, the Pistons were not expected to do much against the East's powerhouse, but Loul Deng proved that there is something bright in the Pistons' future. A surprising Game 2 upseat in Miami got the buzz going and then a dominating Game 4 started to make the series interesting. Game 5 was a thriller that the Pistons almost took if not for some late LeBron Jame heroics. But in the end the Heat were just too much and were able to closeout the series.
(2) BOSTON CELTICS defeat (7) INDIANA PACERS - [4-3]
Analysis: The Pacers game the Celtics a really fight before advancing to the next round by forcing a Game 7. Danny Granger showed to be a real force scoring against the Big 3, who in some games started to show their age. While the Pacers were able to take Game 6, they lost point guard Darren Collison and with him their hopes of taking an upset in Boston.
(3) ATLANTA HAWKS sweep (6) NEW YORK KNICKS - [4-0]
Analysis: While Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire looked really good together, there was no real team behind him and it showed greatly in this series. The Hawks had a different scorer each game, where it was Jamal Crawford, Joe Johnson, or Josh Smith, the Knicks never knew that hit them, and by the time they finally realized...the Hawks brought out the brooms for the only sweep in the Playoffs so far.
(4) CHICAGO BULLS defeat (5) ORLANDO MAGIC - [4-3]
Analysis: Is Michael Jordan's ghost hanging around there? Or whatever the new GM George Koukoulis has got the team drinking should be bottled and sold more than Gatorade. The Bulls have done the impossible being the first team in NBA history to comeback and win a series after being behind 3-0. The Bulls looked dead in the water early on as they lost both home openers and the next where Dwight Howard accepted his DPOY trophy in Orlando. But from then on, Derrick Rose went bonkers as clutch shot after clutch shot at the end of each game allowed them to win the next 4.Round 1 Bracketology
