BEHIND THE SCENES: The Ultimatum

CHAPTER 1
The Ultimatum

Madison Square Garden
Knicks President's Office
May 2, 2011

It's Z's first day as Knicks president and already he feels the pressure mounting. It isn't his first time running a team but this is different.

Cleveland is a small market team, New York is on another level; it isn't called the Mecca of basketball for nothing. The New York media will spread news, fact or lie, just to make headlines. Knicks fans are the most passionate in the NBA, they will cheer till their lungs collapse but when they see things that ain’t right, they will voice out their displeasure.

To add to that, Resurreccion is on an ultimatum.

"Three years! Bring a title to New York or you might as well consider yourself good as gone. Remember that kid, I'll be paying close attention on you."

Those were the exact words of team owner James Dolan to him.

"Three years? Are you fucking kidding me? Why the hell did I even accept this job?" Z questioned himself.

He has a nice 1-2 punch in Melo and Amar’e but the bench is as thick as an onion skin especially on big men. They have a bunch of free agents in the team including Billups.

But the competitive juices running through his veins just won't allow him to back down from a challenge, so he agreed to sign the contract. It’s not impossible but it won't be a cake walk either.

“Man, this is going to be tough. I’ve got some big decisions to make,” as he scrolled through the contracts of the staff and players on his laptop.

Instead of getting answers, more questions arose. Should he exercise Billups' option or let him walk? Maybe convince him to take a pay cut? Will Jared Jeffries' number one supporter Mike D' Antoni hate him if he isn't re-signed? Why is Roger Mason irritated? Is it because K-Swiss is the only sneaker company that wants to sponsor him?

“DAMN! My head hurts already,” he said to himself. "This'll be one long offseason."

Irving in Toronto will finally solve their PG problem, Calderon's play has been regressing.

Yeah, they better make good use of it instead. They are in dire need of a scorer.

Knicks Extend Herb Williams, Hire New Scouts and Trainer
May 5, 2011

New York, NY -- The Knicks signed Assistant Coach Herb Williams to an extension that will have him in contract
through the 2013-14 season. Williams, who played the final seven years of his career in New York, joined the Knicks’
staff as an assistant coach on Dec. 29, 2001.

“Herb brings head coaching experience and helps me in a lot of areas,” says Head Coach Mike D’Antoni. “He’s been
around the organization and knows all of its ins and outs. He’s just a great coach and a great guy to have around.
We’re very fortunate to have him on our staff.”

The Knicks also reached an agreement with Gilbert Gatling and Damien Schmidt who will serve as the team's NBA scout
and head prospect scout, respectively.

"It's an absolute honor to be working for an organization like the Knicks," said Schmidt who signed a 3-year deal worth
$1.2 million. "I already have my hands full with the NBA draft fast approaching, we need to make good assessments of
the draftees so our front office will have an easier time deciding who'll fit best in our team."

In another move, New York also named a new head athletic trainer in Mike Abdenour. He will replace Roger Hinds who
has been with the team since 2005.

"Obviously we weren't happy with Hinds' work this past season," said Knicks GM Zoilo Resurreccion. "Injuries happened
too often and put us in a bad position. We were lucky to make the playoffs with such a depleted roster. The
management wishes Roger luck on his future endeavors"

Williams Thwarted by Falling Draft Stock
Posted: 5/20/2011 03:45:00 PM

"It definitely caught me off-guard. I'm not sure what's causing my stocks to fall, man. But I feel sorry for the scouts that are overlooking me, they are making a huge mistake by passing up on me."

Those were the words of former Wildcat Derrick Williams who have seen his name drop to 8th place in recent mock drafts released by various websites. From being regarded as the most NBA-ready collegiate star, he has fallen behind Enes Kanter, Kyrie Irving, Jan Vesely, Brandon Knight, Alec Burks, Jimmer Fredette and Terrence Jones.

"Maybe it's just a wake-up call from the scouts, they probably noticed that Derrick has been slacking off during the workouts. We all know that the kid has the potential to be good in this league," according to a anonymous team executive.

Adelman Signs 1-Year Deal with Rockets
Posted: 5/19/2011 11:15:00 AM

Rick Adelman will return as the Houston Rockets' head coach for another season amidst rumors that the management were already looking for a replacement. Adelman was first hired five days after the firing of Jeff Van Gundy on May 18, 2007.

"I'm glad that the front office decided to give me another chance to get the Rockets back into contention," said Adelman who has won 935 games in his coaching career.

The Rockets finished last in their division last year with a dismal 33-49 record. Their last playoffs appearance was in 2009 where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Billups Leaning Towards a Knicks Return
Posted: 5/18/2011 02:12:00 PM

According to various league sources, former NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups is favoring a return to New York and play alongside Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire.

"I truly believe we have a chance to be dangerous next season, a training camp together will definitely work out the kinks we obviously have," Billups said in an interview. "But it's up to the front office to decide whether they want to pick up my option, if not I know there are a couple of teams out there that would want my services."

The Knicks still have a week to exercise the team option and keep Billups for at least one more season; or risk losing him to free agency.

Phoenix Declines Carter's Option, Becomes Free Agent
Posted: 5/18/2011 01:23:00 PM

The Suns announced earlier today that they are not exercising the team option stated in Vince Carter's contract that would've payed him $18,000,000 for next season. Carter, who came from a trade with Orlando, averaged 19.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last season.

"I'm fine with it," Carter said. "I actually wanted to test the free agent market myself, and probably sign a long-term contract with someone."

The news comes with reports that former two-time Most Valuable Player Steve Nash and 17-year veteran Grant Hill are both leaning towards retirement.

Also, hopes Williams doesn't drop that far.

KNICKS NOW: Turiaf, Walker Returning

Turiaf, Walker Set for Knicks Return; Still No Deal for Billups
May 23, 2011

            Image

New York, NY -- Energetic big man Ronny Turiaf decided to exercise his player option for next season worth $4.36
million according to his agent. Turiaf missed all but three games last season due to a torn MCL.

"Ronny is in the process of strengthening his knee," said Mark Bartelstein. "He'll be ready for training camp and he is
anxious to get back on the court and help this team next season."

In another deal, the Knicks front office will be keeping Bill Walker for another year by signing the $916 thousand team
option stated on his contract. The 24-year old arrived on February 18, 2010 via a trade that banished mercurial point
guard Nate Robinson to the Boston Celtics. Walker averaged 4.3 points and 11.9 minutes, playing in all 82 games last
season.

Meanwhile, the team option of the 14-year NBA veteran and 2004 NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups still hasn't been
picked up by New York. Rumors have been circulating that the Knicks top brass want to hammer a long term deal with
Billups. The team has until Friday, May 27, to pick up Chauncey's team option.

This is looking great. Just on a level with your Cavs D, which has been great inspiration for me. About Billups, I don't know how much he is asking for, but if you can get him for two more years I'd take him, no matter how much it costs. Toney Douglas is nowhere near on his level right now.

Do you have real rookies? You only have the 16th pick, but how about trading for Kemba Walker - a NYC point guard. Would be great.

Former MVP Announces Retirement
Posted: 5/26/2011 12:35:00 PM

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash shocked the basketball world when he announced his retirement in a press conference held today at the US Airways Arena.

The ceremony was supposed to be for Grant Hill who also decided to discontinue playing in the NBA. Little did the Suns management know Steve was also planning on hanging it up.

"We didn't really know up until 30 minutes before the press con," Suns GM Lance Blanks said. "We all thought Steve was joking when he said it coz he was smiling when he approached me. It only started to sink in when he was there at the podium announcing it. I guess it's safe to say that we are in rebuilding mode now, we just lost our top two veterans today."

Besides winning 2 MVP Awards, Nash was also a 7-time All-Star and led the league in assists four times ('05, '06, '07, '10) in his 15-year career which should probably make him a first ballot Hall of Famer. Meanwhile his teammate Grant Hill, also appeared in 7 All-Star games and had career averages of 17.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Czech Prospect Turning Heads at Workouts
Posted: 5/19/2011 11:15:00 AM

Jan Vesely of the Czech Republic has been impressing NBA scouts in his workout sessions thus improving his draft stock. The lanky 6-foot-11 forward who calls Dirk Nowitzki his inspiration as a player, is more often compared to Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko due to his impressive combination of athleticism, size and length.

"The kid has tremendous upside, he still needs to work on his jump shot and increase his strength to be able to to compete at the NBA level but from what I've been seeing, he is coach-able, it won't take long for him to adjust," according to an NBA scout.

Vesely was voted FIBA Europe Player of the Year in 2010 ahead of the likes of Ricky Rubio and fellow draft hopeful Jonas Valanciunas.

Nene, West Stays With Their Respective Teams
Posted: 5/24/2011 10:56:00 AM

Premier NBA front men Nene and David West has decided to forgo free-agency by exercising their player options.

Nene who averaged 11.5 points and 8.1 boards last season will be returning to a Nuggets team that will now be coached by the Sacramento Kings' interim head coach last season, Joshua Hailey.

Meanwhile, New Orleans will have David West back in the line-up for another season. West led the Hornets in scoring last season with a mere 15.9 points per game.

"Last season was tough, we missed another berth for the playoffs, I think the team ownership issues really got us in a funk," West said. "I'm hoping this year will be different, I'm sure Chris is feeling the same way."

Five Knicks Players to Test Free Agency
Posted: 5/23/2011 09:27:00 PM

Shawne Williams, Jared Jeffries, Roger Mason, Shelden Williams and Derrick Brown have decided to test the free agency waters according to their respective agents. This leaves the Knicks with only 8 players with guaranteed contracts for next season.

"I think they are looking for longer contracts but the front office isn't willing to commit themselves to multi-year deals," said an agent who wished to remain anonymous. "I have a strong feeling they want to be major players in the 2012 off season."
