Well, my prediction got absolutely shit on. An 8th seed winning it all... That's pretty much history in the making isn't it? I don't think an 8th seed has ever gotten past the conference semi-finals. Interesting stuff.

Thanks for all the comments and support guys..

As for the Lakers winning the Finals, though being the 8th seed and all, I still think they have a much better team than the Bobcats and they have Kobe and Gasol so seeing them win a championship is not a surprise to me..

And for all those asking if this is finished, it is not.. So get ready for the next season.. and don't forget that i'll be including the top 3 finishers in my prediction game in the 2009 draft...

EDIT: Wasn't able to update this last few days coz I went to see Kobe on his tour here at the Philippines..

Looking forward to future posts, especially for the draft. I have this strange obsession with scouting reports... I guess I just love breaking down and analyzing how players play I guess.

Cavs All Access: 2008 Offseason

Postby homicide1550 on Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:34 am

2008 Offseason

Cavs GM Zoilo Resurreccion just finished a dinner meeting with Penny Hardaway and his agent in a restaurant at downtown Cleveland. He couldn't hide the sadness upon learning abother one of his childhood heroes decision.

"Are you sure you don't want to comeback? After Deke said that he wont be back next season we really need someone who can teach the young guys a thing or two," said the Cavs GM.

"As much as I would want to but I've already made a decision. My mind still wants to play but my body won't let me, these freaking knees hurt too much. I thought I had a good run in the playoffs and I would like to leave it at that," said Hardaway.

"Ok, Penny, if that's what you want. I won't force you to stay but I'd like to say it was an honor having you play for my team. I'll arrange a press conference tomorrow and I want you and Deke to be there."

Deke was the first one to call Zoilo and said that he won't be coming back next season and will just focus on his family and doing his charity work. It came to a shock at first but he completely understood them. When he acquired Penny and Deke, he promised them that he would help them get their rings but as fate would have it, it wasn't meant to be.

"I just wish we could have at least reached the finals and gave those two a chance," Zoilo said to himself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GM Resurreccion was obviously exhausted after the press conference held earlier for the retirement of Penny Hardaway and Dikembe Mutombo. The press con lasted for about an hour where both players explained their decision to leave the game and answered questions about their future.

"Man, LeBron won't be happy with these developments, he really got close with those two. I gotta get ready for the draft and free agency, we need to create a winning team. I'll just update him before he leaves for Beijing." he thought while walking towards the office somewhere at The Q.

Head coach Mike Brown and other staff members were already sitting at the table sipping on hot coffee when Zoilo arrived. And it didn't take long before the crew started to plan the teams future.

"Alright guys, two of our prized vets are gone, I don't know if we can replace them but we need to make this a better team. Don't forget LeBron will be a free agent in 2010, we need to be contenders if we are to keep him here in Cleveland," Zoilo said.

"Since the draft is just a few weeks away, let's hear what you think of the rookies Mr. Izquierdo."

Fernando Izquierdo, the team's scout brought out a list and showed it to everyone.

    ROOKIE WATCH LIST

    Roy Hibbert
    Javale McGee
    Marc Gasol
    DeAndre Jordan
    Jason Thompson
    Darell Arthur
    Ryan Anderson
    Anthony Randolph
    JJ Hickson
    DJ Augustin
    Eric Gordon
    Mario Chalmers
    Anthony Morrow
    George Hill
    Bobby Brown

    :!: 1st Round Prospect
    :!: 2nd Round Prospect

"Those are all the possible draftees we can pick at 22 and 52, what do you think coach?" Fernando asked

"I think we should narrow them down to what we are really looking for and invite them for a work out at our practice facility. With the departure of Mutombo, we don't really have a backup big man and I think we need another point guard," said Brown.

"I totally agree, let's eliminate some of the players we don't like and send invites to those who will be left," Zoilo said.

After about 15 minutes of deliberating, they came up with this list.

    ROOKIE WATCH LIST

    Roy Hibbert
    Javale McGee
    DeAndre Jordan
    Jason Thompson
    Anthony Randolph
    JJ Hickson
    DJ Augustin
    Eric Gordon
    George Hill
    Bobby Brown

    :!: 1st Round Prospect
    :!: 2nd Round Prospect

"Okay, our next order of business is the free agents in our team. Lets see who we'll resign, Mr. Da Costa you have the list right?" the Cavs GM asked.

"Uh-huh, here you go sir," assistant head coach Francisco Da Costa said while handing over the piece of paper to Zoilo.

    FREE AGENTS

    Delonte West
    Gerald Green
    Dwayne Jones
    Jake Voskuhl
    Joe Smith

    :!: Bird Rights

"Hmm.. Interesting list. Well, Jones and Voskuhl are expendable so call their agents and tell them we are letting them go. Obviously, this leaves us with three players. All three are good and will certainly help our team but I have a problem with Green's cocky and lazy attitude and that locker room incident certainly didn't help. What do you think about that problem child coach?"

"Green is a high-risk, high reward player but I think we need him to make a serious run next season. It's up to you if you want to keep him or let him go," Brown answered.

"Okay, I guess we could give him another chance but first we gotta know how much money he wants on his contract and then I'll make the decision. So I guess that's all for today, we've all had a tiring day with the press con and all. Let's do our best okay? And Mr. Izquierdo work on those invites all right? Draft day is almost upon us."

"You got it, I'll get right on it first day in the morning." the scout said.

The first few days of the offseason has been eventful and the Cavaliers franchise knows that this is just the beginning of another long journey for the prestigious NBA championship. That is if they can make a roster worthy of contention.

I like your summer decisions so far. Drafting Randolph would be nice. :) And maybe George Hill in the second round if possible.

i think an upgrade in the frontcourt is a main concern, u need a true center to backup ur aging big men (Z, big ben & joe smith) (Y) ..and keep delonte

Thanks for the inputs, and yeah, drafting Randolph would be nice I just hope he's still available when it's my time to pick..

Really gotta work on having some young big men, Z and Big Ben probably has 2 or 3 good years left while Joe might leave.. About Delonte, I will definitely re-sign him..

Rookie Scouting: Part 1 of 5

Rookie Scouting

JaVale McGee - C

Image

Projected: Top 10
NBA Comparison: Channing Frye/Patrick O' Bryant
Height: 7'0"
Weight: 243 lbs
School/Class: Nevada/Sophomore

    Strengths:
    - Excellent skill-level
    - Ability to face the basket
    - Excellent hands
    - Shot-blocking skills
    - Huge upside
    - Work ethic
    - Athleticism
    - Excellent wingspan
    - Physical specimen
    - Size for position
    - Solid frame

    Weaknesses:
    - Decision making
    - Shot-selection
    - Footwork/Post-moves
    - Atrocious defender
    - Avoids contact
    - Basketball IQ
    - Fundamentals
    - Not ready to contribute immediately
    - Ability to finish through contact
    - Strength
    - Free throw shooting

Scout's Notes: "I was amazed at how long the dude is when he first entered the gym, he is truly a physical specimen. He is a project. He still needs to develop post moves and learn little things at the defensive end but he is an athletic young man and runs the floor well. A great pick for the future but not if we want to compete for the championship now."

DJ Augustin - PG

Image

Projected: Top 15
NBA Comparison: Jameer Nelson/Travis Best
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 180 lbs
School/Class: Texas/Sophomore

    Strengths:
    - Ability to get to free throw line
    - Mix between scoring/passing
    - Transition play
    - Ball-handling skills w/either hand
    - Change of gears/Hesitation moves
    - Commitment to playing defense
    - Fundamentals
    - Unselfishness
    - Work ethic
    - Basketball instincts
    - Court vision
    - Solid frame
    - Ability to shoot off the dribble
    - Perimeter shooting ability

    Weaknesses:
    - Dominant ball-handler
    - Shot-selection
    - Defensive potential
    - Ability to finish around basket
    - Size for position
    - Undersized
    - Inconsistent shooter

Scout's Comments: "Was surprised to see him knock down treys with regularity during the workout but what struck me the most was his knowledge of the game for such a young age. This kid can contend for starting minutes if we can draft him and may even be a starter for some teams. Only problem I can think of is his height which can cause mismatches on both ends of the floor."

Rookie Scouting

Bobby Brown - PG

Image

Projected: Late 2nd Round
NBA Comparison: Speedy Claxton
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 190
School/Class: Cal State Fullerton/Senior

    Strengths:
    - Explosive scorer
    - Lightning quick
    - Dribbling ability
    - Playmaking abilities
    - Unselfishness
    - Basketball IQ
    - Quick release

    Weaknesses:
    - Undersized
    - Strength
    - Lacks commitment on defense
    - Shot selection
    - Can sometimes be too flashy
    - Played in a smaller conference in college

Scout's Comments: "Bobby can dish out the ball despite having a knack at scoring but like other PG's in this year's draft he is a bit undersized. Could be a good insurance policy at the point if someone in our rotation gets hurt."

Eric Gordon - SG

Image

Projected: Early 1st Round
NBA Comparison: Ben Gordon/Shannon Brown
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 215 lbs
School/Class: Indiana/Freshman

    Strengths:
    - Ability to get to free throw line
    - Scoring instincts
    - Commitment to playing defense
    - Lateral quickness
    - Work ethic
    - Ability to finish through contact
    - Athleticism
    - Excellent first step
    - Strength
    - Ability to come off screens
    - NBA 3-point range
    - Perimeter shooting ability
    - Pull-up jumper
    - Quick release

    Weaknesses:
    - Shot-selection
    - Turnover prone
    - Ability to create for others
    - Undersized for position
    - Poor rebounder

Scout's Comments: "He really reminds me of Ben Gordon. No doubt, this kid can flat out score. His shooting stroke is beautiful. But he's got to learn how to get other people involved and acquire some point guard skills. He'll be an excellent boost to our bench scoring if we can get him. If teams sleep on him, we should definitely snatch this kid up."

Rookie Scouting

Roy Hibbert - C

Image

Projected: Top 10
NBA Comparison: Zydrunas Ilgauskas/Joel Przybilla
Height: 7'2"
Weight: 278 lbs
School/Class: Georgetown/Senior

    Strengths:
    - Efficiency
    - Back to basket scoring
    - Excellent hands
    - Excellent Touch
    - Shot-blocking skills
    - Basketball IQ
    - Experience
    - Strong Intangibles
    - Work ethic
    - High-level productivity
    - Young for class
    - Passing skills
    - Size for position
    - Strength
    - Mid-range Jumper

    Weaknesses:
    - Nimble footwork
    - Lateral quickness
    - Athleticism
    - Conditioning
    - Has trouble against athletic big men

Scout's Comments: "Hibbert has all the physical attributes to be a good NBA player, he has the height and size. The only thing he lacks is athleticism. It will be interesting to see if he can develop into one of the leagues premier big men. He'll be a great backup for Big Z."

JJ Hickson - PF

Image

Projected: 2nd Round
NBA Comparison: Brandon Bass
Height: 6'9"
Weight: 244 lbs
School/Class: NC State/Freshman

    Strengths:
    - Back to basket scoring
    - Footwork/Post-moves
    - Energy/Intensity
    - Potential
    - Work ethic
    - Ability to finish around basket
    - Ability to finish through contact
    - Explosiveness
    - Strength
    - Wingspan
    - Excellent rebounder

    Weaknesses:
    - Versatility
    - Ball-handling skills
    - Commitment to playing defense
    - Defensive awareness
    - Focus
    - Fundamentals
    - Poor hands
    - Passing out of post
    - Undersized

Scout's Comments: "He can score from inside the paint but needs to consistently hit jumpers from 10 to 15 feet. He won't be expected to contribute much on his first year but with his work ethic and attitude, he has tons of upsides. And from what I've seen he can really crash the boards."

Rookie Scouting

DeAndre Jordan - C

Image

Projected: Top 20
NBA Comparison: Andrew Bynum/Patrick O'Bryant
Height: 6'11"
Weight: 260 lbs
School/Class: Texas A&M/Freshman

    Strengths:
    - Excellent hands
    - Nimble footwork
    - Defensive potential
    - Pick and roll defense
    - Huge upside
    - Work ethic
    - Ability to finish around basket
    - Freakish athleticism
    - Incredibly quick
    - Physical specimen
    - Size for position
    - Wingspan
    - Excellent rebounder

    Weaknesses:
    - Extremely limited w/back to the basket
    - Footwork/Post-moves
    - Defensive awareness
    - Gets backed down in post
    - Shot-blocking skills
    - Doesn't always play hard
    - Fundamentals
    - Maturity
    - Not ready to contribute immediately
    - Not productive enough
    - Poor passer
    - Ability to finish through contact
    - Strength
    - Free throw shooting

Scout's Comments: "Dude's athletic ability and quickness is surprising for a big man but certainly needs to learn how to play with his back to the basket. Right now almost all of his scoring comes from dunks or follow-ups but with a year or two working with our coaches, he could be a force inside the paint."

Jason Thompson - F/C

Image

Projected: Top 10
NBA Comparison: Mark Blount/Malik Allen
Height: 6'11"
Weight: 247 lbs
School/Class: Rider/Senior

    Strengths:
    - Ability to face the basket
    - Excellent hands
    - Excellent Touch
    - Potential
    - Strong Intangibles
    - Work ethic
    - Ability to run the floor
    - Mobility
    - Wingspan
    - Excellent rebounder
    - Shot blocking tools

    Weaknesses:
    - Settles for bad shots
    - Atrocious defender
    - Gets backed down in post
    - Perimeter defense
    - Basketball IQ
    - Physical Toughness
    - Free throw shooting
    - Strength

Scout's Comments: "Playing in a lower level conference in college may hurt this guy's chances of being drafted higher but I really think that he has all the tools to play in the NBA. His work ethic is amazing and despite spending 4 years in college, dude has a lot of upsides. He'll fit in nicely as a backup for Big Ben and Big Z."

Rookie Scouting

Anthony Randolph - SF/PF

Image

Projected: 1st Round
NBA Comparison: Lamar Odom/Tim Thomas
Height: 6'11"
Weight: 212 lbs
School/Class: LSU/Freshman

    Strengths:
    - Mismatch Potential
    - Ability to create own shot
    - Ability to create w/either hand
    - Ball-handling skills
    - Defensive potential
    - Shot-blocking skills
    - Huge upside
    - Work ethic
    - Left-handed
    - Ability to run the floor
    - Explosiveness
    - Fluidity
    - Incredibly quick
    - Size for position
    - Wingspan
    - Mid-range Jumper

    Weaknesses:
    - Shot-selection
    - Turnover prone
    - Inability to establish position in post
    - Defensive awareness
    - Gets backed down in post
    - Fundamentals
    - High bust potential?
    - Questionable intangibles
    - Tweener?
    - Ability to finish through contact
    - Frail frame
    - Strength
    - Lacks great range on jumper

Scout's Comments: "He is a raw talent but I see lots of potential with this kid, probably one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft. He is extremely long and lanky like Tayshaun Prince and I'm not sure if he can bulk up. Probably won't help the team that much for now but he is an excellent investment for the future. If other teams pass on him, I definitely think we should pick him."

George Hill - PG/SG

Image

Projected: 2nd Round
NBA Comparison: Antonio Daniels
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 180 lbs
School/Class: IUPUI/Junior

    Strengths:
    - Strong fundamentals
    - Perimeter shooting
    - Ball-handling skills
    - Unselfishness
    - Wingspan

    Weaknesses:
    - Tweener?
    - Turnover prone
    - Played in a smaller conference in college

Scout's Comments: "He is a tweener, a shooting guard in a point guard's body but I think he can learn to play as the lead guard. He can score from anywhere on the floor but he lacks the quickness and athleticism to be something special. Like Bobby Brown, he'll be a good insurance policy at the point."

Bryant, James Headlines U.S. Men's Team, With High Hopes of Regaining Gold

Season and Finals MVP Kobe Bryant has a shot at another big prize after just winning the NBA championship, and he'll have plenty of help along the way.

LeBron James is there. Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony, too.

They will lead a U.S. Olympic basketball team that was announced Monday and hopes to capture the gold medal in Beijing in August after a third-place showing in Athens four years ago.

The team already has "re-established itself" on an international level, USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said during a news conference.

The next step is to bring home the gold, and the U.S. will send a deep, versatile team to China. Jason Kidd and Dwight Howard were also among the 12 players chosen from a pool of 33. They were joined by the Detroit Pistons' Tayshaun Prince, along with Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul, Michael Redd and Deron Williams.

Other stars with an expiring contract include the Hawks' Josh Smith, the Clippers' Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala of Philadelphia, Ron Artest of Sacramento and Antawn Jamison of the Washington Wizards.

The list is also full of promising young players the likes of Ben Gordon, J.R. Smith, Luol Deng, Monta Ellis, Emeka Okafor and Jose Calderon.

Former Defensive Player of the Year Announce Retirement
Posted: 20/6/2008 02:50:02 PM

Former Defensive Player of the year Marcus Camby ended all speculations as he announced today in a press conference that he has decided to walk away from the game. He thanked all the fans and the Nuggets franchise for supporting him all throughout his career.

Camby isn't the only talented big man who decided to retire as the Heat's Alonzo Mourning, Chris Webber of Golden State and the Cavaliers' Dikembe Mutombo earlier announced that they too will hang their jerseys.

"It would've been nice to retire with a championship ring on your finger but I am happy with what I've done and achieved in my career," Camby said.

Rose's Draft Stock Rises

The University of Memphis product Derrick Rose has continued to impress NBA scouts and executives during his private workouts and his rising draft stock is proof of it. Teams are now seeing that he has a potential to be something special.

"I didn't know he was that athletic until I saw him in the gym," an NBA scout said. "He's like a young Jason Kidd but with the athleticism of a Dwyane Wade, whoever picks him is a sure-winner."

From being the 7th pick in the last mock draft, experts are saying that Rose may end up as one of the Top 3 selections come draft day.

The off-season might be interesting. Hope Rose goes in the Top 3, where he belongs to go.

I'll bet the redeem-team will get the cold.
