Assessing some of my trades/moves

Sat Dec 09, 2006 8:23 am

So I have been playing with the Seattle SuperSonics. I simmed the entire first season and ended up with one of the worst records in the NBA. Since then I play the first 50 games' 4th quarter and all games are simmed so that the final frame is close enough to go either way (between me being up 6 to being down 10). Here's what I've done with the franchise midway through the 3rd year.

1st off-season:
Drafted a 72 overall PF Davis
Drafted a 65 overall SG Ripley
Signed a 59 overall undrafted SF Harrison
Traded Harrison, Sene and Gelabele (all under 60) for 68 C Biedrins

2nd season:
Traded SG Ripley for PG Blalock (low 60's expiring contract)
Signed 66 overall SG Stephen Graham
After leading my division with a miserable .500 winning mark, my season tanked and the rest of the simming resulted with me out of the playoffs again.
Traded 68 overall PF Collison and 2nd round pick to the Spurs for low 60s C Oberto (expiring contract) and 1st round pick

2nd off-season
Drafted 77 overall PG Richards (predicted as 3rd overall pick who I selected at the 12th spot )
Drafted 68 overall C Cano (turns out there were higher ranked Cs who were drafted afterwards)
Failed to re-sign Cs Swift (72 overall) and Biedrins (70 overall) and being over the cap I ended up making these moves (all low 60s and minimum contracts):
PF Ryan Hollins
undrafted PG Ramirez
undrafted C Harry
C Melvin Ely
C Calvin Booth
Traded 72 overall PG Ridnour and C Booth to Memphis for 66 overall SF Vinicius and 65 overall PF Cardinal

3rd season:
Realizing afterwards that PF Cardinal is not an expiring contract as I hoped, about 40 games into the season I did this:
Traded PF Cardinal, 62 overall C Johan Petro and 66-68 overall SG Damien Wilkins to Toronto for 68 overall C Rasho Nesterovic (expiring), 61 overall SG Anthnoy Parker (expiring) and a 2nd overall pick (should be mid-2nd)
I am currently sitting atop my division by about 4 games and after 42 games am around the 25-17, 24-18 mark. I should have enough cap space now to re-sign Lewis so he does not walk and perhaps pick up another decent free agent this off-season.

I am now running:

C - 68 Cano*/ 71 Davis**/ 68 Nesterovic / 63 Harry* / 63 Ely
PF - 75 Wilcox / 71 Davis** / 62 Hollins
SF - 83 Lewis / 66 Vinicius
SG - 88 Allen / 66 Vinicius / 61 Parker
PG - 77 Richards* / 66 Watson / 62 Ramirez

I've posted this as a means of procrastinating studying for finals, so if you are trying to put off something or genuinely care by all means let me know what you think of my roster management moves (best, worst). I try not to do anything extreme (clearly) and make my trades fair from the opposing teams' perspectives.

you traded ridnour? he's the future of that team. He can shoot and pass and is pretty quick. If you used him he would've improved substantially and been a huge weapon. Also, Why so many centers? do you really need like 6 of them? everything you did almost seems to revolve around obtaining centers, and not even good ones...Oberto and Nesterovic? If you're going to trade Collison (a good player and underrated in the game) you should've at least gotten a high 60's player

One man's opinion

Fair enough but I traded Ridnour when I got a better PG in Richards and prefer Watson's superior defensive capabilities to Ridnour's average ones. As for the abundance of centres, those when I acquired Oberto and Nesterovic it was purely for their expiring contracts. I looked for guards but no one had salaries that matched up and were expiring. And the Collison traded ended up being him and the 45th overall pick (a 68 overall PF) for Oberto (who was then taken off the books) and the 27th overall pick (a 68 overall C; it was quite a deep draft with last overall pick being a 66 overall player but it was pretty void of Cs [only 10 after checking]).

I likely will defend my moves in response but I still would like to hear from the community.

I couldn't agree more. The sad thing is though, it doesn't matter whether you're a Ron Artest or a Steve Novak. In Live it's all the same... :(

With point guards you can see the difference a little better as they can steal the ball immediately off the opposing point.
Also, somehow the PG I drafted is a whiz at causing offensive fouls. I don't understand how, but he can get calls around the 3-point line as his man walks the ball up. Watson can't seem to get the same calls...
