In my experiences, using Excel has occasionally corrupted the .dbf files, whereas I've never experienced it using DB Commander.

Im not saying it doesnt, but I've never had excel corrupt one on me. But now I use Open Office, a free alternative to excel, word, ect. And again (knock on wood) I have yet to encounter an issue.

The main advantage is that it's much easier to corrupt the dbf files by saving them incorrectly when you're using Excel. DB Commander opens dbf files and saves them automatically as you go, in the correct format.
A less significant, but nevertheless handy feature is the ability to open up two dbf files side by side in DB Commander. Very useful when you're editing players.dbf or teams.dbf and need to look up a value in another file, such as nicknames.dbf, birthtown.dbf, plays.dbf etc.

I second that. I've used open office for a couple years now, I love it.

Open office rocks and there's addons/macros you can get for a lot of missing features.

Well, I'm only going by my experience. I personally prefer DB Commander but to each their own.
