Point Guard Always Shoots!

Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:27 pm

How come whenever I play against the computer, particularly when I'm playing a Dynasty Reg Season or Playoff game, the PG always shoots? It's getting to be really irritating playing against a Houston team where Yao and T-Mac both score less than 10 and Rafer Alston scores 45-50...

Anyone know how I can correct this?

I'm gonna go ahead and move this to NBA Live 07 General Issues, since it's not really a dynasty issue. I know it's happening to you in dynasty mode as well, but it happens no matter the game mode :)

But- if you read around a bit you'd probably find that there are LOTS of problems with 07, the point guard domination being one of them (some people are denying that it exists, I have no idea why).

There is an official patch now that EA has released ((http://www.easports.com/nbalive07/news_detail.jsp?dcr=%2Fsports%2Fnbalive07&id=patch_release)) that supposedly fixes some things, and people are doing research into the game engine ((http://www.nbaliveforums.com/ftopic44295.php)) to see if it can be 'hacked', in so many words.

All this assuming you're playing the PC version. If you're not (if you're playing Playstation2/XBox/360)- you're out of luck.

Don't know why? Let me explain again and perhaps help the new member in the forum.

Point Guard shoots alot because you give it space to shoot alot. Main factors being that point guards in general have good speed, good jumpshot and quickness. THis results in CPU outplaying you with a pointguard. NBA Live 07 has no PG dominance, but it has CPU dominance (which means the issue is same against any player in any position who has similar skills (good jumpshot, speed, quickness etc))

Sadly you cannot completely eliminate the issue. You can however improve it. Decrease game speed (to 30-38) and increase User defense assist slider.

Computer calculates whether it has alot of open space through a radius around the player (and it affects both sides, aka you've seen when you youself have shot a jumper that was nearly blocked yet Albert says it was wide open), which is way too small. Sadly, it cannot be made bigger for the algorithm to take into account.

This is why defensive assist will help since it will hold your player closer to the player with a ball making it harder for players with good speed, quickness and shooting or drives to take advantage of it.

It was named 'point guard dominance' because people usually guard as a player against a point guard, who begins CPU's offense and merely is the first one to see the open opportunity. It's not CPU issue directly, it's a player one (there's no such -dominance- in CPU vs CPU games)

Try reducing game speed and increasing user defense assistance, it get's better and in time the issue disappears as you will be able to handle computer with no matter whom you guard.

I hope it'll work out for you :)

i've been doing some research into the plays.dbf and teams.dbf strategy sections:
some results:
1) some of the info has been changed since nba live 04.. some was added and some other stuff deleted.
2) in plays.dbf i've removed a bunch of 3s from some columns and removed positions from other columns. this makes a difference; players now act more in line with their ratings without damaging the integrity of the play design.
3) i've added back in plays that were in 04 back into 06 and 07. you can create plays in this file. its a little complicated to understand at first. but i think someone could actually potentially write a program to create plays in this file.
4) i've fixed the team strategies in teams.dbf; i made sure that plays that are in plays.dbf are entered into teams.dbf this includes defensive plays
5) players still drive to the basket, but now only seem to do that when there is an open lane, instead of driving regardless of what the defense is doing.

i will post some boxscores and post the files for others to look at and test asap. i'm busy with other stuff.

You guys are killing me. I've explained this at least ten times in various threads. If you leave the CPU's play as Shooter A, they will run a play to get the SG a shot. If the SG doesn't have an open shot, he will pass back to the point guard. The point guard will then stand around and dribble, then eventually either drive or shoot a jumpshot with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock.

Solution: For God's sake, stop leaving the CPU's default play as Shooter A. It isn't that difficult.

your right about that. to be very clear on what i'm stating about my earlier post is..the things i'm talking about are in addition to the Shooter A thing. the shooter A thing is not the all inclusive solution to achieving realistic ball distribution. i don't feel like wasting my time with this, so i'm not going to repeat this again either. i'm just sharing something that looks to be accurate; i'm playing with all sliders set at 50.
check it out for yourself as i'm busy with other stuff besides this game and i really don't have anytime to do anymore with this.

Well, it'd be nice if it was that simple but I don't agree with that.
That's the first thing I tried to change, and even with Power C and anything else, PG kept making bad choices 90% of the time.
What's killing me is that some people keep claiming that there is no issue regarding this while there's obviously a huge one that everyone else noticed right ahead.
For the newbies here, try Jimmy or REDD22's fixes, these are your best picks to reduce or eliminate the PG problem, along with other ones.

For God's sake, you shouldn't have to do ANYTHING to make a game realistically playable. Especially not after an official patch. ;)

(some people are denying that it exists, I have no idea why).

Example A: From a pre-patch game, notice the most "dominant" players were the C and SG the PG did very little. If I ever get time I'll post my caps of the strategy screens.

Image

Example B: Same game, notice all three PGs are fatigued 50% or more. Players with 79 or higher stamina not fatiging is universal to all positions, not PG specific as others claim.

Image

Example C: Post-patch game against a PG that should dominate, note PF and SF have comperable numbers and better shot%.

Image

Example D: Shot diagram for a CPU PG when you actualy guard them and disrupt their shots.

The problem is there.

It does not matter how many points the PG takes for the computer team - this is dependant on the human player's ability to play defense. What you do need to look at is how many shot attempts the PG makes. When a PG goes 5 for 30 that is "PG domination" in the sense that he hogs the ball.

I've always changed the quick plays and designed plays around other players and that has always helped me to get solid results out of the PG's shot selection. They tend to look to run the offense more if you design plays around other top scorer's for each team. I've never liked how EA uses the silly Default plays because it always leads to PG's shooting too much.

Jimmy's fix works pretty well for me. Go to the 07 announcement section, you'll find a lot of patches and fixes.

simply use jimmy's fix 7.5, works perfect, no "PG always shoot!" anymore
