Why Don't We start Our Own Company?

Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:18 pm

Since Live basketball for the PC is flailing right now, why don't we get togetehr as a community, develop a game that we want, market it, and become multi billionaires who care?

Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:29 pm

Go ahead, I'll beta test it.

Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:33 pm

Easier said than done.

It aent that easy mate. U gotta do alot of shit to make a game and being a community. it would be fair to say we wouldnt get very fair before people bail out if we do start and i dont think many people will cooperate

Thu Oct 05, 2006 10:07 pm

Fun, how negative everyone is instead of backing a community based project. It wouldn't be THAT hard to produce something. Consider how many engines are out there to modify such as Source...

Thats already one thing that EA doesn't have.

Thu Oct 05, 2006 10:38 pm

nobody in here has the IT skills to produce something close to nba live. i'm 100% of that.

Thu Oct 05, 2006 10:43 pm

Well, I don have THAT much money, but I am a good lobbyist and visionary. If we can hook up with the right peeps, the sky is the limit. I want to design for PC first, then next gen, then current. The way it should be. Shoot, EA didn even draw the ref in for us. That is sickening.

Thu Oct 05, 2006 11:20 pm

Who knows to make a PC game? I don't konow

Well they build a bsketball game engine. The key algorithms probably in ASM that solve complex math problems. I allso can't imagine, how crazy a threadsynchronization will become for that thing. Try to beat that at first, then we are open for your visions.

... damn I hate stupid people

Thu Oct 05, 2006 11:36 pm

If you can't get a nba license just make the game customizable like pro evo soccer but even more. If I ever strike oil when digging somewhere then I'll finance your game.

Im not going to lie to you guys, I tried programming a little bit and it really isnt too too hard. for the game engine use XNA which would allow us to make games for both the PC and 360. also for animations instead of mo-caps, use endorphin

there are free game engines we could use out there (and if we do this, we need "ragdoll" physics with endorphin, so players react correctly with each other)

This is very very very possible. We of course couldnt use the NBA logos and everything if we wanted to make money off it, but we could just use the city names and have one "generic" stadium with different courts for the teams.

Im serious you guys, we could really do this and have a good BETA done before 08 comes out.

Ok here's some hurdles you have to take. I don't want to take your vision away from you, but you have to consider this.

1. It's all about the money...
Nobody here has enough money to invest in such a project, and even if NLSC members donate money it would not be enough. So therefore you need sponsoring.

2. So and how do we get sponsoring?
2.1 The concept
First you have to have a concept. Not one of those scrappy 10 pages concepts. Very detailed, well presented, explaining the aims, the features etc... (Dozens of pages minimum).

2.2. Before even thinking about writing a concept you have to know the details about game development especially about the technical issues. Not every feature is easy to implent nowadays. The technology sets the limit, not the sky.

2.3. Ok lets assume you have handled points 2.1 and 2.2. That's good but not enough. Before someone even considers to sponsor such a project you have to provide the infra- and suprastructure. Which means founding your company, providing the equipment, hire the staff, provide a place to work and and and...
This alone costs more than anyone of us can afford.

2.4. Only with a concept, an established infra- and suprastructure people will consider investing in the project. Even in other countries it is that difficult. And an open source community game would take ages to develop. And when it is finally done, the technology is outdated and there's no way of competing out in the open market.

That's only a rough overview, many communities have failed to create their own gaming projects and dozens of them end up as open source in the internet and are quite crappy. It's not as easy as you think.

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:11 am

why do we need a whole company? why couldnt we just make the game and ask for donations from other people.

It isnt plausible to create a company, money is involved.. Why not just create the game and if it gets popular charge a small amount for the new version.

This is very possible, but it wont happen. Most people here who can do this have outside lives...and if we have everyone else do this, we'll have a game programmed by 12 year olds complaining about Kobe's ratings.

So shit or get off the pot time, lets either organize this thing and move this topic to "Other Games" or keep discussion here and have the mods Lock this thing

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:24 am

My bad, I was referring to the last post of the poster. It sounds like the idea of really creating a game which is able to compete with nba live on the pc. Therefore the points I wrote above. This is unfortunately not possible without a company.

I don't know the laws in the states very well but I think you have to have a company (even a mailbox company) if you want to charge people for a version of the game. As I stated in another thread earlier this week, the XNA engine gives the developers great opportunities. And I'm looking forward to it.

To your idea:
Well I like the idea of such a project, but trust me, I worked for a couple of community projects (mostly involving RPG's like NWN or M59) and it's a huge amount of work, mostly for the coders. I'd say if we're able to adapt graphics over time to match new standards via XNA (you may know if this is possible) than I'd say why not, let's do it.

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:33 am

well for starters we'd have to start with "Larry vs Dr J" type game. just a simple 1v1 with a hoop and lines on the ground.

just did a quick search for an engine compatible with XNA and that has an option for ragdoll or "naturalmotion" animations http://www.visual3d.net/

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:37 am

no offence to everyone, but this reminds me of when your a little kid and want to start something that theres no hope for.

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:43 am

Wou. Interesting thoughts. Why do we want to charge people for our game. Lets make it under the GNU General Public License.

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:56 am

im just saying if people want to work and try for this, its possible. There is no way Im doing all this work by myself or even with 1 or 2 others.

pretty much im calling out DTNTER2003's bluff. so either live up to what you said, or dont make stupid posts anymore...

and btw, lets say everyone does get on board for this, we wouldnt have a product worth of being on the same shelve as Sony's NBA 07 never mind Live or 2k for at least 3 years. Shit, we'd be lucky to compete with Live 2000 if we actually made it to a release. But we could; we do have the resources, just I dont think we have anyone with the cohones to actually stand up to EA

It'd be funny if most of these cats make this come true and are millionares in the future. How embarassing for the doubters if this were to happen. I would be sad, how's about you?
