NBA: The Road To Glory (New Game Mode Idea)

Tue Jul 11, 2006 3:16 pm

The mode begins by taking you to a create a player screen. This is no ordinary create-a-player mode, it is much more in-depth. The focus is more on attributes and characteristics. There would be the obvoius such as height, weight, age etc that are currently in create-a-player modes but than there would be more in depth ones such as attitude (poor, fair or great), college attended (either D1, D2, D3), player template (scorer, shooter, stopper etc), work ethic (poor, fair, great), hype on you (none, very little, some, alot), and than finally a more advanced option i will describe in the next paragraph.
At this screen, it deals with how well you are projected to be drafted. You can select yourself as a Consensus #1 pick (results in a higher overall rating, longer contract, and less chance of being a bust), lottery pick (top 14 pick, and results in a somewhat high overall rating, a possibly shorter contract, and a higher chance of being a bust) mid-late first round pick (lower overall rating, shorter contract, higher chance of being a bust than previous option), 2nd round pick (even lower overall rating, even shorter contract (1 year), and highest chance of being a bust) and finally Undrafted (results in having to try out for teams in summer league and training camp). This mode for the most part determines the chances of your player having a succesful NBA career. Obviously the later you select when you should be drafted, the harder it is to hang around in the NBA and having a succesful NBA career (to give advanced NBA gamers more of a challenge). The ultimate goal would be to land yourself in the record books and into the NBA Hall of Fame.
Once you are drafted you are than sent to the summer league team with the option to play or sim. Summer league allows you to gain your first NBA Experience Points. NBA Experience Points allow your player to earn more playing time, increase your overall rating, and overall make you a more valuable assest to your team and the League. Obviously the more NBA Experience Points earned, the more playing time you recieve, the higher your overall rating, and the more value you have to your team. You can earn NBA career points through training mini games, breaking certain goals (ex. score 40 points in a game), breaking NBA records, and being in the playoffs earn you more Experience Points. Higher NBA Experience Points, the less likely you are to turnover the ball with 5 seconds left on the clock or are more likely to be the veteran on the floor when the game counts.
As the season starts, you have no control over trades, signings, or any GM related jobs. You are only the created player. In games, you only play as yourself. The view is still normal but there is a lock on your player. When not on the floor, you can control all 5 players on the floor, but when you sub into the game it is your responsibility to play your postition and play it effectively. The coach determines your playing time and the only way to play more is to show you can play when it counts. As a rook or a player with little experience you will get a few touches and you must make each one count, and you would most likely play in blowouts. Obviously the better you get the more playing time you can recieve and the more influence you can have on your team.
Having no control over GM related jobs you have no control over whether or not you get traded. In the early stages in your career, you could be thrown in as trade bait and shipped out across the country to another team. Here you will have to try and find/establish your role on that team. When your players overall rating is higher you could start to demand trades or ask for certain types of players. You could get traded numerous times throughout your career and you have no choice in it.
In the offseason in a non-contract year you can do training sessions and play mini games to improve your overall rating in an attempt to become a better player and improve your game. In a contract offseason however, you can view offers from other teams and accept which one you feel is best. The more money earned, the more NBA experience points earned. If your player is not offered a contract he can be sent to Minor leagues (text screen stuff only) until he is offered a chance at a 10 day contract from an NBA team. If your player is a vet and offered no contracts (ex. hes 22 years pro and your just trying to keep him around) he will obviously have to retire. In this mode you can retire at any time you feel, and even attempt a comeback if you retire early.
As your player ages, NBA experience points become more valuable as your overall rating starts to decrease. A veteran leader is coveted by those team trying to make a playoff run, and as a vet, your more likely to make those clutch shots and make those key plays. As a result, after having a long NBA career your goal is to make the NBA Hall of Fame.
The catch to this entire mode is that it is unpredictable, and no experience is ever the same. Will you be an NBA-Allstar and Hall of famer, or will you be a former #1 pick-turned bust ala Kwame Brown, or will you be a sleeper turned All-Star like Michael Redd, or will you be a player who had a lot of potential but was plauged by injuries throughout his career. This mode is meant to have a real NBA experience in the shoes of any NBA player. You could get traded 8 times in your career, have a season where you only play 23 games because of an injury, or you could end up being a guy who never could hold his place in the league.

**This mode is just an idea and an outline, feel free to add suggestions or changes to this mode**

I like that, kinda like what they have in Madden. It could work in an NBA form too, im not 100% shure but NBA 06 for ps2 had somthing similar to that and it looked fun. Good idea (Y)

Yes this is a great idea. I have NBA 06:The Life vol 1. It's a great game and yes it's very similar to what you are asking for, but it's only one season. I have not beat it yet. My PS2 broke and I'm getting a 360 in September. But It sounds very similar to Superstra Mode in Madden, I hope they have this.

Moved from NBA Live 07 General to Wishlist.

It's been brought up a few times before. Personally I'm more keen on the current Dynasty Mode and while I think the single player career will be the natural next step at some point, I wouldn't want it in the game instead of Dynasty Mode or at the expense of further development of Dynasty Mode. I'd prefer the current features be worked on before a brand new gameplay mode is added.
