Salary Cap and Team Chemistry - LA Lakers

Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:23 pm

Here's a stumper:

Is it better to invest in the future? Or try to win it now?

Case in point:

I have Kobe, Odom, and Bynum in the Lakers. Odom's contract is expiring and Team Chemistry has been down coz Kobe and him don't like each other (as seen in the team chemistry screen)... I've also been losing like hell and I think this is because of team chemistry...

Problem is Bynum's contract is also expiring... And he'll be expecting a way higher salary than what he's getting now coz he developed by 10+ overall points within the last two seasons (I'm in my 3rd season).

Do I sign Bynum and Odom? Do I sign Bynum and don't sign Odom - this might improve team chemistry and allow me to win some more games. But I don't think it'll help too much with my salary cap coz Kobe eats up a big chunk of it anyway. I'll still bust it no matter what I do...

Any thoughts?

You should've developed Bynum slowly. What I did was develop Bynum little each yr by bringing off the bench (he developed rating of 2 per year) and signed him a 6 yr deal starting at $2.60 and ending around $4  He wanted 3 yr, but I added $3 million to the original yr and 3 more years.

I have Bynum expiring next season (2014-2015) and his salary is like $3.80 with rating of 79. I'm still bringing him off the bench so I can sign him an another big deal.

Thanks for the tip... I would have liked to do that but I let go of Kwame (didn't re-sign him) and placed my bet on a Laker triumvirate: Kobe, Lamar, & Bynum...

Problem is it'll probably end up being more expensive than if I had (as you said) slowed down Bynum's development and kept a Kobe-Lamar-Kwame lineup...

Trade Kobe, he's already in his early 30's. Get Lebron.
