My few remaining wishes for NBA Live...

Fri Oct 28, 2005 9:24 am

A lot of my ideas that I've posted over the last few years have actually been implemented into the game (the rookie generation method for one)...but there are still some basic flaws in the gameplay that require some fixes. Here are my solutions...

1. Trading Block.

One of the flaws of dynasty mode is that it's all too easy to get a roster of All-Star players by just trading 2 or 3 guys for one.

The reason this doesn't work is that teams simply won't discuss deals for certain players. And also, it gets annoying when the CPU calls you up with random deals for your players.

To solve both these problems, you need a "Trading Block" feature. It'd be a simple screen where you mark players on your roster that you're looking to trade...and the computer teams do the same thing.

Basically...the better a team is, the less people would be on the trading block. You could only get superstars from the very worst teams in the league...or from teams that were looking to unload them to rebuild...just like in real life.

In addition, the computer would only contact you with offers for the players you were looking to trade...

2. The Layup Rating

One of the reasons Live 2006 has such high scoring is that it's nigh impossible to stop people in the post. Every player gets inside and does double-pump, Jordanesque layups. The only way to solve this is to up the shotblocking, so that people's shots get swatted all over the place...but this isn't realistic either.

The game needs to control what players can and cannot do ridiculous layups under the basket. Do it with a layup (or body control) rating. Players like Julius Erving, Kobe or Allen Iverson would have 99's, and most unathletic players and big men would have very low ratings.

This way, if you drove to the basket with an unathletic guy, you would do a basic layup that can get easily swatted if there's anyone near you, and scorers would be appropriately effective.

3. Set shots

Players like Tracy McGrady are so hard to stop because they jump WAY up in the air when they shoot. It's almost impossible to block their shots. Other players, like Quentin Richardson, Derek Fisher or most bench guys shoot without jumping at all. They need lots of space to get their shot off.

The game needs to reflect this so that your role-players really do need space to shoot, and not everyone is an unstoppable leaping shooter like Kobe or T-Mac. The timing on the release could be the same, but it would just be a lot lower. It would make the game play much more realistically.

All great ideas. I haven't been sold on the idea of a Layup Rating in the past but I can now see the advantages of such a rating. Low ratings for small players who mostly play outside should definitely discourage point guards from easily slicing into the lane and scoring on acrobatic layups.

I hope features like the trading block are the future of Dynasty Mode. The framework is there, we just need the features.
