Star vs Superstar

I don't get the difference between stars and superstars for all other abilities except the highflyer. It was explained from the tutorial that you can do different abilities with superstar highflyers like rotating the right analog stick in a quarter circle. But does it also apply to superstar playmakers for example. I haven't tried it yet but do they pass differently if you rotate the right analog in a quarter circle?
