To free up cap space, go to the trade section of dynasty or season mode. Then press circle (or B if you are using xbox). The interest bar for a player will be replace by their salary. Look for someone who has a salary a 25% less salary than the player you are willing to trade. Propose the trade, and hope they accept.

Example:
*-Lakers-*
Kobe Bryant...$15.00M

*-Rockets-*
Tracy McGrady...$13.50M

If they accepted that trade, you would have gained $1.5M in cap space.

^^ lol no..

you're takin a bigger contract, so u loose space by 1.5M

More Cap space = Smaller size of overall contracts

Also try trading to teams like Atlanta or Charlotte, they have a lot of cap space so you can give them a big contract while recieving a small one. Also, dont resign free agents in the off season.

If you don't mind waiting until the end of the season, you can always trade unwanted players for players that have expiring contracts (ie players who will be free agents in the upcoming offseason). If you want to clear cap space before then the easiest method is the one Silas described.
