does anyone know anything about the ATI tool tray configuration right now it's so detailed that i can see the ridges on the ball from press view, it's awesome up close but at a distance it looks like a spotted ball.

Are you talking about the Catalyst control? This technically should be in Technical Issues, but anyway. Turn on Anti-Aliasing, which will smoothen out edges, and while you're at it, turn on anisotropic filtering, which does a similar effect.
