PSP - Superstar abilities

Does anyone else have the PSP version - i'm having problems with the superstar abilities - when I press 'L' & one of the buttons the player just makes an ineffective one handed shot - i'm not sure what i am doing wrong.

Is there anyone else here with the PSP version who could give me some advice.
