This is getting out of control... (Open Discussion)

Thu Feb 16, 2006 9:11 am

First of all I'd like to thank Andrew for releasing quality roster updates. I'd say his are the most "complete" updates that come out. I refuse to download anyone's but his. I'm sure most of you can relate.

So taking that into consideration, can't we give the guy a break? Really...

With each update he releases it seems that the problems never cease. These complaints about the ratings have really got slow down, as they're what make up a good 80% of the issues that Andrew's bothered about.

Why not just list the large scale changes? Will there REALLY be any significant effect if a rating is raised by 4-6 numbers? For those who think there would be, then ask yourselves if it's really worth mentioning?

EA's ratings aren't great, I know. But they're not THAT bad. By listing these stupid small changes, we only prolong the next release.

Not that anyone will agree, but I think we should only list some major changes. Using some examples...

Al Harrington, Atlanta's leading scorer, but a FG rating of 65? I was told by a lot of people that it should be raised by at least 10. Others would say the same about Gerald Wallace, maybe even a higher increase.

Should Ben Gordon's FG rating be an 87? I wouldn't think. He'll have his streaks but this rating does not correspond with what he's averaging this year. I've heard people say it should be put down by 10 or more.

Mike James is one of Toronto's leading scorers now. Do his stats reflect a FG rating of 68? I wouldn't think. Raise it by a good 10 points.

Chris Paul with a passing rating of 70... He's among the league leaders in assists and the players he's amongst all have a rating of over 80.

I remember reading a post about Hedo Turk. His FG rating is a 69, but there have been several games where he's led the team in scoring. High 70's I say

We've all seen Raja Bell do things we thought he couldn't do. He deserves a major overhaul. Especially in the 3PT category.

So do Mehmet Okur, David West, and Boris Diaw, all of which are candidates for MIP.

Anyway, the list goes on, but here's where I'm going with this.

All these complaints about little tweaks are senseless. Why bother raising a stat at all if it's only going to be raised by anything less than 6 or 7 points? We, as spectators can't really make such precise judgements.

If we're going to make a suggestion about a player, make sure your suggestion is even worth considering. All these little tweaks are stupid. Just because a player has a low rating in a specific category doesn't mean he can't do squat in that field of play.

Hey,
There's a big difference between a 74 and a 75!!!

you can ban me now

Or people could just change their ratings for themselves for the players they think need reworking.

Thu Feb 16, 2006 8:38 pm

Well that's the thing. I welcome the suggestions but I won't use every one because I don't agree with all of them. If anyone thinks their favourite player should be a bit higher than what decide is realistic, by all means give him a boost after you download the updates.

There are simple solutions, I know. Reading Dynasty stories, or stories about how a player scored so many points/rebounds... It's hard to make any comparison because most likely, the person had made their own tweaks to the roster. The suggestion was made in terms of creating some kind of organization, some kind of order. To dish out the rosters and have everyone change them to their liking, and then do things like compare oine game's flaws to another... It's annoying. It'd be nice for people who use your roster to just use it and do nothing else.

Absolutely, I'd like to think I could get everything right. But I do miss players and don't get to see everyone play so there's always room for improvement.

But it does become an issue if people have a poor attitude about it; say, suggesting that a couple of wrong ratings ruins the update or be in some rude about their suggestions. That I can certainly do without.

Also at the end of the day the human player's style and approach to the game have the final say on realism. With that in mind and also any flaws in the game/simulation engine to begin with, there's only so much the rosters can accomplish. :(

for me personally it's just a matter of seriousness by people suggesting different rating adjustments. You know I'm still using Andrew's patch v.1.03 with changing the player ratings by myself last but not least by reading through this forum.

So if someone comes along and says... 'I'm a fan of the Raptors and their player ratings need to be changed and he can proof it with real-life stats than I'm willing to change it in my season. At least in a realistic amount which means not to make Smush Parker a Highflyer dunkin' over Yao for example (by the way could he ??? ) but to give him a few more points in dunking so that he could dunk in the game.... of course it refers to individual sliders.

You know, I'll never understand people coming in here and telling Andrew to bump up Alonzo Mourning's ratings as if he'd create a retro-roster from 1996 ?! So if Alonzo is your favourite player boost him by yourself as high as it gets and stop begging for higher overall ratings... That's my opinion.

I'm allright with the way this forum works...people throw in suggestions and everybody can decide if to change or if not. Pretty easy :D

Of course, that's something I have to take into account. Some people don't provide much evidence as to why they think a player's rating should change or are clearly biased because they like a certain player or team and one needs to be as objective as possible when doing the ratings.

Thu Feb 16, 2006 10:33 pm

yeah that's what I meant with seriousness and that's what makes me always checking back with nba.com stats before raising a player's ratings in certain categories.

I just think there's no contradiction between being a fan of a player/team and making good suggestions for updates...

Maybe typical example is this guy complaining 'bout Kevin Martin on the Kings. Well, within all objectivity I must admit he's right 'cause I'm convinced EA completely messed up with his ratings. You know he's moving like kind of a steamroller on court and shooting really really bad...

But I saw him play this season a few games and he's a skilled, agile guard so I decided to change his ratings in nearly every category this user mentioned.

Fri Feb 17, 2006 8:38 am

Exactly. Though I have to say, the biased suggestions are decreasing. Back in the early days of the support forum for the rosters there were a lot of people suggesting their favourite players become 99 overall and whatnot.
